Atrix - my personal review - Atrix 4G General

Hey all, I hate the Atrix's power button position.
Now, I love android, ever since I started with it a year and a half ago with the locked up Motorola Milestone that eventually gor ROMs.
Compared to my very modded and optimized Milestone, my new Atrix totally blows it out of the water, its much snappier and more responsive out of the box than my 1-month-to-optimize Milestone. I have no cope about it at all android-wise. I gotta say I did NOT like the default launcher, so I installed ADW (I wanted easy theming) but I had some problems not being able to move widgets, so I installed Launcher Pro Plus (which I paid for) and it works like a charm specially cool with the cube looped transition!
I even use motoBLUR widgets, I think that the speed dial ones are much more handsome than the default shortcuts and that also goes for the new calendar widget!
But hardware wise... well, first of all its all plasticy, so that's a minus for many persons, but that is fixable with a rubberized cover to change the feel of it. Even though I get a somewhat solid feel from it, I do not feel like I will break it all that easy, even though it's plastic. The screen is quite good, a big improvement from the Droid-Milestone's. It is even comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S IMO!! And a thing I truly miss is the dedicated camera button the Milestone has.
The only real cope that I have that I think may not be all that personal and could apply to more persons is the position of the unlock-power button. Now its a great position for swiping your fingerprints, but its a sort of hard to reach button and its not so easy to press it. It should've been placed on a side of the phone or they could've left that as a fingerprint reader AND put a proper power button.
All in all, compared to my previous iPhone 3G, Motorola Milestone and the Samsung Galaxy S and iPhone 4 that roam my house, I gotta say this Motorola Atrix is probably the BEST cellphone I have ever had and seen, and it will probably be that way for some time.
Saludos,
Gustavo

I'm glad you're happy with it. I used to have a Galaxy S which I hard bricked and I really feel it was faster on day to day use and had a much better screen. Anyway, just opinions, right

Your saying the galaxy s screen is better than the atrix? In what way? The atrix has higher resolutions

Far more vivid colors and true blacks, possibly? Not to mention it does a better job of actually displaying yellow...
But personally, I prefer the Atrix's resolution over the Captivate's colors.

I'll take the Atrix TFT screen for the battery life, but I'll easily take the SGS for the bigger desktop icons. Currently I'm messing around with the density settings to make them larger using RE, but can't find the right number that suits me yet...

Hey, I also came from a moddem Milestone (which I still have) to the Atrix.
I like the dedicated camera button as well.
As far as the screen goes, I like the size more but the Atrix has some serious gradient banding issues. Even on the Android Market - the Download or Install button. It is a gradient of light and dark grey , you can see the bands where the greys change shades.
The Milestone didn't have this kind of banding at all.
Using the GoChat app for facebook chat; the ,main screen goes from light blue to dark blue at the bottom and the banding there is very visible.
I didnt see any banding on my Milestone, just a smooth gradient

I just got the Atrix.. coming from Inspire 4G...

So I just exchanged my Inspire 4G for the Atrix. The guy at RadioShack told me if I didn't like the Atrix, I could switch back to the Inspire 4G with no problem.
Anyway.. on the ride home, there are a few things I already don't like..
One is the screen. The colors are really off and it looks weird. I know that it comes with 'qHD' display and super high resolution, but the Inspire 4G screen looked so much better than the Atrix. The screen kind of looks dioxalate, not really but that's the closest I could come to describing it. Like if you look really close, you can see like dots on the screens and stuff. Also, the Inspire 4G was a bigger screen, and lower resolution, yet it didn't have any of this problems.
Another thing I don't like is the keyboard (MotorBlur). It's really hard to type really fast on it. On the Inspire 4G, I could type fast on it with no problem. Maybe because it was a bigger screen, I don't know.
The last thing is MotorBlur. I already hate it. It's so bland looking.
I tested out the Atrix in the store and coming from a 3GS I LOVED the keyboard.
I have both the Inspire and Atrix.
I feel like the keyboard is faster on the atrix
The inspires screen colors were warmer but the atrix has better clarity.
The atrix has better performance for sure
the speaker and call quality on the atrix is better
the camera on the inspire had better clarity, but the atrix had more detail in each shot, and took faster pictures.
both phones have its pros and cons...you should have tried the phone before you switched to it.
try and turn you display brightness up it makes a big difference for me anyway

You can thank Motorola's decision to go for a cheap PenTile LCD screen for the Atrix' qHD display.
It has an effective resolution less than WVGA; and unlike with SAMOLED screens, there's no big contrast to make up for it. So when you zoom out in the browser, the text becomes heavily pixelated and unreadable.

The resolution is higher than WVGA and while playing around with in the store there was no pixelation while readin text, crystal clear.
I exchanged my Inspire for the Atrix and I very much prefer the Atrix. The Inspire is a great phone for the money, but speakers and battery killed it for me. I've had zero issues with the Atrix so far. I won't complain about Motoblur because I knew it had it when I bought it. Seems that many are complaining about things that they could see and use while in the store before purchase.
Atrix vs Inspire
I went from Atrix to Inspire & I very happy with inspire. Following are my observations..
1) Battery life is almost the same for me: I am using Inpire for the past 13+ hrs & have 20% battery left almost same as Atrix for my usage. Pleasantly surprised by the 1230mAH battery on Inspire! HTC certianly optimized to last the phone long even with that bigger screen.
2) Screen on Atrix is dull. Fonts wer small which really annoyed me. Inspire fonts are much better & I am loving the 4.3 inch real estate!
3) UI: This my first Sense UI & I am loving it. It is smooth & integration with OS was brilliant! Blur was laggy on Atrix.
4) I haven't checked the camera on Inspire yet. Atrix camera was below average for me.
5) Handset speaker was better(volume as well as clarity) on Inspire. However speaker was better on Atrix.
6) Build quality & materials are superb on Inspire! I like the metallic finish with chrome accents on earpiece speaker grill, speakergrill, power button & volume rocker. Atrix looks/feels cheap & plasticky.
7) Volume rocker is raised on Atrix which easy to use. Inspire rocker is flat & is hard to feel the buttons. It will take some time to get used to it I guess.
8) Music quality is better & louder on Inspire through headset. However Atrix is better through speaker.
9) I like the USB port on the bottom on Inspire vs side on Atrix. It is uncomfortable on Atrix particualy when you are using the phone while charging.
10) I like the speaker position on Inspire. My hands doesn't block the speaker grill when I hold the phone. Where as on Atrix, it was always blocking, I had to make a concious effort not to block it.
So, the bottom like is dual core Tegra 2 CPU didn't do much for me. Don't get me wrong, Atrix is fast.. but so is Inspire! I didn't notice any difference in terms of speed. I guess that additional core will be used for the multimedia dock & laptop dock?
Coming from the Nexus One the Atrix 4G is a fair upgrade.
I have 2 of them at some point, both rebooted randomnly, and then seemed perfectly ok. I'm sure other will experience at least one random reboot.
I'de return them but I suspect I'de just get the same issue again, and it doesn't happen often enough to be too much of an inconvenience.
Hopefully a software update or hardware revision solves the issue in the future.

I dont get it, why no one give the phone a chance. Playing with it while on the way home is not gonna cut it. I came from Iphone, Nexus one and samsung captivate and Atrix is great.
i got a chance to play with the atrix today. screen was good. about as good as my hd2 but not as colurful as the mytouch 4g in comparison. next time i get to play with the atrix ill take a closer look at the pixilation that some have mentioned but with my first short look, i was impressed with the atrix.
I didn't like the default keyboard either. I just reinstalled smart keyboard pro from the Marketplace and im good to go now.
I always shrink the size of the keys to allow for faster typing.
Captivate 2.2.1 OCed
Atrix Root
Nexus 1 2.3.3

plenty of alternative keyboards and launchers available in the market! Swiftkey keyboard and Launcherpro are among the first apps I install after buying a new phone.

Before you get so upset, I actually came to this forum looking for exactly this thread.
I am currently in the market for what is either going to be an Inspire or an Atrix. I have been reading the somewhat loaded pro-Inspire comments i expect to see on the Inspire forum. Now i come here trying to get the opposite point of view for the Atrix. This is going to be a large part of how i decide which phone to buy in the end.
I encourage you to join in the discussion and defend your phone of choice; i appreciate it!
I got my wife a inspire over the weekend and returned my atrix for one after playing with it a few hrs. I can destroy the atrix in everyday use and any benchmark. I really wanted to like the atrix but the locked bootloader, poor dock performance & no hspa+ killed it for me.
I posted this in another thread, but since it was asked....
I bought the Inspire the day it came out. I used it for almost 2 weeks, then bought the Atrix and gave my Inspire to my fiance. After 6 hours, I HATED the Atrix. Nothing but trouble with MotoBlur, the widgets didn't update worth a damn and it was "clumsy". The extra resolution of the screen yeilded no extra "real estate" and seemed absolutely tiny, even compared to my Craptivate.
I was going to take the Atrix back but my fiance asked to try it first. She had it about 10 hours and demanded I give her the Inspire back! She complained about MotoBlur and that the menus were very laggy. Hitting "menu" or "back" buttons didn't do anything sometimes until the 3rd or 4th time.
I returned the Atrix and exchanged it for another Inspire which I gave directly to my fiance. We're both happy campers now. Motorola has a LOT to learn about optimizing their UI. The HTC product is much more finished and the build quality seems to be better. I shouldn't be surprised, 4 of my last 5 devices were HTC. They've never disappointed.
Good to see you here SHEP! I ran some of your ROMS on my FUZE back in the day.
What I find funny is while almost nobody will argue with the assumption that HTC Sense > Blur. Almost everybody uses it as a major complaint when comparing the Atrix.
Aside from that fact I like the Atrix over the Inspire, its easier to use in one hand for me, has the FFC, its only going to get better.
Sure the Inspire is a great device, but IMO the Inspire falls short. The Thunderbolt for Verizon is a better comparison.

my Atrix Vs Nexus S experience

so my brother has a nexus S. i have an iphone 4, and i ordered from amazon last week the Atrix and i got it yesterday " returned it yesterday also . screen flicker problem. " anyway here is what i think between the 2 devices.
Speed :
surprisingly i found the nexus S faster in terms of response / no lag. my brother didnt overclock the phone. but in terms of use. the nexus S was faster.
the Atrix S sometimes lag athe app drawer, when you move an icon to the main widget screen. it might be cause of the stupid blur is too slow. but its for what its.
who knows when atrix would get faster than the nexus S if it got custom roms or clean rom just like the nexus S. but i dont think it will if any.
Games :
i tried need for speed shift on both phones. i couldnt tell the difference. in fact. it looked better on nexus S due to the colors .
however. we also tried the Nintendo 64 emulator. and some games like killer instect and golden eye run much better on atrix " almost not playable on nexus S. so we over clocked the nexus to 1.5 i think. it was better. but the phone started to hang and reboot
Screen :
personally, i think the super amoled is one of the best screens in the market. but i thought that high res qhd screen on atrix might make a difference. and i was wrong. i could still see the pixels on both atrix and nexus S. the difference is the colors are much better on nexus S. super amoled wins here hands down. qHD my @$$.
Sound :
i think both are the same. loud and clear sound on both devices.
Hardware design :
this is personal taste. but i did like the finger touch access on the atrix. even tho its hard to turn on the phone due to its awkward place. i found that its easier on nexus S. the curves on nexus S PERSONALLY looks better than the curves on Atrix.
Camera :
i tried few shots. i thought it looked better again on the nexus S. the atrix shots had this sort of dots/dust fliter on it. didnt look clean at all. dont know if my phone had a defective camera as well or not.

I'm sure this is a Motoblur issue. Man, that thing is laggy! If you try a different launcher (LP or ADW, for instance), it'll get much better. I have seen that, even in single cores like Defy or Milestone 2.

why do they keep using it ? your average phone user wont know its a blur issue and go for different launchers. he will try the phone at the store. its lagging. screw it and try the next phone.

They need something to differentiate their brand of Android phones from others on the market. Vendor skins are the only real way to do it for the average consumer.
The hope is that you enjoy the enhanced functionality or look that a custom skin brings and will steer your future purchases based on that (i.e. you like motoblur and don't want to lose it, so buying a phone with HTC Sense will be less attractive than another phone with motoblur).
I don't think that average users are going anywhere near a custom launcher (nor do they know what a "Launcher" is even if they stumble upon it in the market).
Demo phones tend to run fairly well in stores (if they have an operational demo) and the average use time for a demo phone is pretty small. I don't think most people would come away with a negative impression from high end phones using the demo units.
hmmmm
Thank you for the quick review.
Did you ship it back for a replacement or just a refund?
The fact that Android itself doesn't require a dual core phone with a gig of ram speaks in volumes here.
As the OP stated, he saw improvements for the Atrix when he played games on the N64 emulator; the phone is fast, yes, but things like aa locked bootloader and 2.2 slow it down when in comparison to pure Google devices with a good ROM.
I'm on a 2.3.3 rooted, deoxed, ziplined N1 and this is the fastest I've seen any phone go, and I have a OCed Capttivste and I had the Atrix as well.

Probably have a defective camera or something sense the camera takes very clear and sharp pics on mine.
And for the speed heck even when i first got mine everything was super fast motor blurr didn't cause any problems for me, And ya im not a normal user which pretty much everything i get my hands on i want too hack or overclock
Like my galaxy tab im running voodoo and have it overclock too 1.4ghzs.
And for the screen it looks fine on my atrix and i don't see any pixels unless i turn the screen on very bright than i see them which i usely keep mine on low which is good enough.
And for the power button were its located at i like were its at hehe sense if its in my pocket the power button doesn't get bump and its easy for me too turn it on.

yeah i also do think i had a defective camera because it wasnt supposed to be like this.
and i am not dissing the atrix really i know its great art of a hardware. in fact when i retuned my atrix my brother told me why dont you go with nexus S ? it didnt feel right to me because somehow i knew i was going back step in terms of technology
its just the blur. 2.2, locked bootloader is really killing the phone. this phone, on paper, should be at LEAST 2 to 3 times more powerful than nexus S. yet the nexus S imho is winning in terms of pure speed and response. even zoom in and out in the browser was faster on nexus S. but once it was pure gaming ? the atrix ran circles over nexus S

Ya hopefully the devs will crack the bootloader which im sure will happen in the future sense there's alot of stuff going on in the dev section lately
What i would love too see on it is a voodoo kernel with overclocking too like 1.5ghzs the phone would be really flying than.
Very interesting. Yes, AMOLED looks amazing, but it burns in, and it's very power hungry. I have a Captivate, and one of the things I hate about it is the AMOLED screen.

- The qHD screen color sucks for sure. Colors are distorted compare to IPS screen and color calibration sheet. Super AMOLED is vibrant yet suffer from burn-in problems and consumes too much power decreases the internet browsing time.
- The camera is a little pink here is my example of the quality.
Atrix....hm... too much hype....

i had a defective camera. and the screen used to flicker on high brightness.and i did mention it. why cant i make an impression based on the other things beside the cam ?
and i do agree the phone as hardware is awesome. its the best in the market and imho better than the optimus 2x.
but as its stands right now. the nexus S was a better phone if you are not a gamer. and thats only due to the software being locked down and 2.2 along with blur.
i did mention when i started playing emulators that requires power, the Atrix did circles over Nexus S.
the screen whatever you like super amoled, iphone ratina, motorolla Qhd,, is something personal. but in my eyes i saw the super amoled better because i thought with QHD i wont be able to see pixels on screen " which is a good trade off. no pixels, but less colors. just like the iphone ratina " . and i was able to see the pixels just like how i did with the nexus S. so it came back to me which has better colors and again, imho the super amoled was better.
not saying the qHD is bad. if i can pick one of the phones right now thats both working perfectly, imma pick the Atrix. its just the super amoled is better to look at. and if you are not a hardcore gamer, you will probably enjoy the nexus S more for now. due to the lack open bootloader, roms. etc
What new update are you referring to?

Atrix vs Captivate (Screen, mainly??)

I'm on Cappy #3. And now my speaker doesn't work.
I'm going to argue a lemon and see if ATT can't let me have a different phone.
I was looking at the Atrix but- has anyone used both the Captivate and Atrix? Why would I chose the Atrix? I'm using Serendipity ROM, it's great, fast...
I don't really use GPS much (mainly because it sucks- but also because I just don't use it). So overall I'm happy, I'm just tired of the Captivate hardware issues.
What scares me about the Atrix is the locked bootloader. If it works out of the box, great, but you sure do limit support with a locked bootloader. But maybe Motorola actually updates it and there's not a need for custom ROMs?
My other options, were perhaps waiting for the SGS II (or something else). It's still Samsung, but I have a feeling, just like the Captivate, the draw of the specs and beautiful screen might be too hard to resist.
June iPhone 5 launch isn't too far away, either. But the problem with both of these, is I don't know if ATT will let me get a brand new-just-released device, you know?
I also considered getting the iPhone 4 and just living with the Apple nonsense world until this summer- and selling it (iPhone fanboys pay crazy money for those devices, I could flip it easily).
But even with the retina display, I don't know if I could live with an LCD display. ???????
Ideas?
I've got the vibrant, the captivate and just picked up the atrix last week.
Only thing that really bothers me is the screen, the colours are so much less vibrant, its not a deal killer but i don't like the washed out look.
the camera app on the atrix is kinda odd too, i prefer the galaxy one, but you get used to it, its slow to focus and no spot focus.
i miss the quiet mode alarm clock of the captivate too. i liked being able to access the wifi off on and by dragging down at the top, the motoblur is initially annoying.
took me a little while to get used to the power button placement, i dig the fingerprint reader. the usb connection is in an annoying location (off to the side) and at least you get and hdmi cable with it.
its a lot more fluid speedwise, dont get the lag i was used to with the galaxy.
Screen vs. Screen, captivate kills it. The motion blur is so noticeable on the atrix its almost a slap in the face.
The screens between the captivate and atrix are completely different and appeal to different people. Yes the captivate is much more vivid and bright but the atrix's qHD display is much more accurate and crisp and the graphics when gaming blow the captivate out of the water imo.
The NVIDIA processor and gpu make a big difference in screen quality and quicker rendering of images and videos.
I have both a captivate and atrix but I use my atrix as my daily phone due to the battery life and stable gps.
Don't get me wrong though i love being able to mod my captivate which is a big reason why I have not sold it yet.
If you have the option to grab the atrix, take it, it will be a major upgrade.
Atrix wins hands down. While the screen is more vibrant on the cappy, i think the quality is better on the Atrix. Even though the first atrix i got had some sort of hardware issue, i was just able to return it and have it work. WIth the cappy i was stuck with a terrible GPS no matter how many times i'd return it. The camera on the captivate seems to be much better tho unless you're dealing with night shots or out door shots in the bright sun.
While i miss the community of the captivate and all the possibilities of Roms, i'm quite content with my atrix knowing with almost certainty that i'll get gingerbread and i won't have to wait almost a year for it.
The screen really isn't good on the Atrix; I compared tthe Captivate, Nexus 1 , and Atrix aide by side and ended up taking the Atrix back and selling the Captivate.
If you want a higher resolution, just go and get a LCD density app off the market.
As for speed, the Atrix really isn't that much faster. Foe the most part, all apps aside from games aren't really CPU heavy, it's the allocation of apps all running at once that slows people down. If you properly manage your running apps then you shouldn't see much of a seed difference. (My N1 and Atrix are nearly identical).

Ideas?

After two weeks of experience with the atrix and a few months with the captivate I can say this:
The atrix has a better build quality, awesome fingerprint scanner (no one can use my phone/log into my bank account but me and I'm too lazy to type a code or dawing shapes everytime I want to use it) ,amazing GPS reception (works even indoors!, sometimes I get 1meter accuracy!) a better battery and a better performance (twice the ram the cappy has (great for multitasking and battery juice), dual core cpu (less noticeable at this time), etc)
The Captivate has amazing screen colors but lower res (it took me a few days to get used to the atrix, I sure would give up on qhd for led) More games support it at this time, thicker&lighter, neat camera (way better than the atrix, at least at day light) looks better (from my point of view) and much more customizable (due to unlocked bootloader - endless roms, kernels, etc)
Horrible GPS reception and annoying build quality (I heard "clicks" when texting) made me dump the cappy and buying the atrix.
If you don't use GPS much (I use it all the time) and you don't care about
build quality (acceptable on the atrix but far from being htc) you can
stick with your GalaxyS, overall, it is a pretty good phone.
Bottom line is, from my point of view, is that the atrix is for more mature and professional usage/business, and the GalaxyS is better for teens/early 20's (better multimedia capabilities) - Since I just turned 26 I changed it
Both phones have terrible laggy home screens so I didn't consider using touchwiz nor motoblur and I didn't even took it as a feature (gde with
odestrian/launcherpro will make your handset happy)
Me, after having I7500 and Captivate, I'm done with Samsung, at least for now, looks like I'm gonna stick with my atrix for at least two years (but who knows..)
I prefer to the qHD resolution. Color on Atrix is not that bad it is acceptable. I also have a Samsung Wave with Super Amoled and i can still live with Atrix's screen. It is not that biggie as many people are telling. First time i looked at Samsung Wave's screen i fell in love with it and bought it. Then i showed it to friends and they were impressed and jealous. But now i even forget i have a Super Amoled to watch photos and play games. Many people look at my Wave dont show their impress even though they have never used any better than an LCD phone.
So, with the Captivate, an unlocked bootloader means we can custom ROM it and strip the crappy UI out and use whatever we want (and also do things like Voodoo).
That does not exist on the Atrix. That's part of my worry??? Are you content with just using Launcher Pro?
Let me ask this, I'd definitely consider the iPhone 4's to be the best looking LCD out there right now in a phone, how does the Atrix compare to it?
Design Gears dumped the Atrix, eh? That isn't too reassuring, lol.
I took my atrix back. Couldn't stand the screen, horrible viewing angles horrible color and the phone overall imo was junk. I had too many freezups and had to do 3 master resets on it in a matter of 2 weeks. 1 of those weeks it sat in its box on the fridge.
I would wait for something else to come along. It won't be much longer before new phones hit the market. I would stay away from iphone also unless if you don't mind eating spaghetti every day.

I came from a Nexus One where it seemed like I flashed a new ROM every week. I now have an Atrix and have been very happy with it. Locked bootloader... doesn't bother me. Everything I have wanted to do with it have been possible with root access and Launcher Pro Plus. IMHO, the screen is fantastic (both resolution and colors) (it took a few day of getting used to the colors), motoblur does not slow the phone down (from a skinning standpoint, it's ugly but I have fixed that with custom icons/widgets (screenshot), and I will be keeping this phone for a while now.
edit: oh, and the phone is crazy fast!

[Q] Are you happy with your Atrix purchase?

Hi all,
Well it's been a good few months that you guys over in the States have had your hands on the Atrix.
The release is apparently 'imminent' here in the UK, so hopefully this thread and your feedback will help us decide whether it's worth pulling the trigger or not .
Whilst we are fortunate enough to be expecting either one or both of the HTC Sensation and the GSM EVO 3D by July, they are both 4.3" devices, and the Atrix - at the moment - still remains the only dual core device that we'll be getting here in the UK .
So, honest opinions, if you had your chance again now, would you go for the Atrix? Or hold out for something else?
Voting appreciated.
Pros/Cons would be ideal.
really loving mine. I have had two blackberries, 8330 and 9650 bold with os 6.0, all iPhone versions and numerous other stuff.
I love the Atrix for the 4" screen... the new 4.3" ers are too large for my hand.so 4" is the perfect screen size compromise in my opinion
the software is exteremely fast...
so yes, Im really loving mine to be honest.

^ Exactly why I'm still contemplating the Atrix. 4" is juust perfect
However, talk of everything being locked down is disappointing. Having run a HTC Legend, I'm lucky that we've had some dev backing, which has enabled me to run CM7 and a few other ROMs. Without this kind of dev work/support, I'd still be on FroYo at best...
The Atrix really, really, seems to be lacking on the dev front - it seems to put so many people off, and more significantly, the developers

this phone is really nice with a quick response. much faster than that of the galaxy s. even the original rom is already good enough.
the high resolution is really nice to let you see more on the screen
but the poor thing is the screen lost touching after touching too long!

I really like the Atrix and have owned one from its release date. Very fast and has many useful applications right out of the box. The virtual keyboard is much better than other Android phones I've owned, though I must admit that I do still prefer a physical keyboard. I have owned the G1 and Nexus One and like this phone much more than those.
There is only these "regrets". I wish the boot loader and software was easier to circumvent for custom rom installation. And I wish CyanogenMod had a ROM available for it. He does such great work.
I'm going to try to be patient and wait for the Motorola released version of Gingerbread, but I might try Gingerblur if it takes too much time to get an official release.
Very fast, great handset functionality, nice keyboard, great size, and the screen is beautiful. No regrets buying one with the exception noted above.

As a result, I've got the Galaxy S II on pre-order waiting for delivery 5th May.

I love my Atrix. It's the first Android phone I've had. The iPhone 3GS was a perfect fit in my hand, and the Atrix feels exactly the same, albeit the buttons are in different places. I prefer my Atrix over the iPhone, and have found that even with it being locked down, the opportunities for customization are still way above the iPhone.
Is the Atrix fast?............Yes...............How does it compare to other Droid phones?..............I can't answer that one.
^ Thanks - a Scotman in Boston?? Can you bring me a GSM Atrix on your way back to the UK
The screen is bad. PenTile matrix is more visible on Atrix than on Amoled PenTiles despite higher resolution. Small text is blurry with visible pixels. Blue/green colored icons etc has very visible pixels. Blacks are grey and the screen suffers from banding / not showing true color. Scrolling in menus with small text results in flickering and inability to read the text. Moving the phone, like giving it a short twist makes pixel-patterns temporarily occur in bright areas.
The power-button is among the worst buttons ever put on a mobile phone. It has no feel, almost no travel and is placed in a 45 degree angle which makes it even harder to press.
Pinch zoom in the browser and photo gallery is extremely(!) choppy, much worse than many single core phones.
The camera is not good with tons of noise. The front facing camera is almost a joke as it produces cartoon-like pictures.
Other annoying thing is that it isn't possible to turn of the vibration of the google-buttons.
I have no idea what the he'll you're talking about. Because the fact that the 3.5 mm jack is on the right hand side, they couldn't have put it there. The lock button is also a biometric sensor, which saves me alot of time. It's not awkwardly placed once you think about it. Because it's a 4'' phone, the form factor is rather large. Not having to stretch my finger joints out to the very top seems like a bit of an advantage, no?

And most if the lagging issues are w/ Motoblur. Get rid of it, and problem solved. The camera is a bit weak, but i'm not here to complain. I prefer a standalone camera anyway.
Overall, an exceptional phone that's a bit rough around the edges, but that'll sort itself out soon enough. Either from Moto, or third-party.

Wanna sell me that worthless thing for, $25.00?
I really like my atrix. I would buy it again.
Wife has an Iphone... She wants my atrix now.
Seems to be a lot of Professional phone users out here...
Hell, i'll take a second one. Never hurts to have a backup. If you want an awkward lock button, try the Galaxy S. That stupid thing is on the side. Whenever I use my friend's, I always end up locking the thing by accident or nearly ripping a hole in his USB port cover...

[Q] Atrix vs. Infuse

I'm due for an upgrade at the end of July. I cannot decide whether to go for the Atrix or the Infuse. They're just about dead even for me.
Atrix Pros:
-Dual Core CPU
-GeForce GPU
-Fingerprint Scanner
-Motoblur > Touchwiz 3 (IMO) (of course I'd do LauncherPro/ADW, but still)
-qHD Resolution
Infuse Pros:
-GORGEOUS Super AMOLED Plus screen (I am pretty much in love with AMOLED)
-0.5 extra inches of screen real estate
-HSUPA isn't disabled
-Sideloading isn't disabled (but I'd probably root and lagfix anyway)
-I have huge hands
Basically, the Atrix has more horsepower, but the Infuse has more eye candy and network speed. I'm not sure which is the better trade-off. I'm a power user for sure, but I just can't get over AMOLED. Does anyone care to sway me one way or the other?
Of course, if the US gets the Galaxy S II by July then this is irrelevant.
Sorry if this has been posted a bagillion and five times.
US is getting galaxy sII in July so there's no point
Anyway to answer you before this gets locked, I say get the atrix. The resolution upgrade is awesome. Not only that but when we get custom roms, this beast will finally be freed.
But if you love the SAMOLED then just get the infuse. In everyday usage I doubt you'll notice the difference.

Well.... i went from an iPhone 4 to an Atrix... and i absolutely love it. I keep thinking about swinging by an AT&T store to check out the Infuse.... but i doubt it'd be tempting to me.
Reasons i like the Atrix:
1) the already mentioned dual-core... which i'm pretty sure will be a requirement in some Android versions... and a little bit of future-proofing never hurt anybody
2) 1GB RAM.... which i don't think many other phones have.... if any, really. (other than the SGS2)
3) fingerprint reader. Yes, it can be finicky at times, but at least your phone can't be cracked into by, say, figuring out a pattern that the oils of your skin have nicely smudged across your screen for you.
4) the also mentioned NVidia chipset. I don't do a lot of gaming on my phone... but hey.... just a little more future-proofing i guess.
Things i'm not sure of with the Infuse:
1) Super AMOLED. I know... they're quite nice screens.... but i also hear the colors are extremely vivid... which might not necessarily be the greatest thing.
2) screen size. Yes, it's only another half inch... and yes, we may have large hands... but pocketability is my concern. An extra half inch can do wonders to a pocket.
Two things i'd like to correct in your Pros/Cons... HSUPA has been enabled for the Atrix (and reviews of the Infuse i've seen don't really show much difference from what many still see with the Atrix. Sometimes nice speeds.... sometimes sh*t speeds), and supposedly sideloading could be allowed by AT&T in the near future.
The Galaxy S2 might be worthwhile... but i dunno. Would have been nice had they gone with the NVidia chipset... but maybe they figured it would generate too much heat for an extremely thin phone? Not saying the Atrix is a beast size-wise... but i'm pretty sure it's thicker than the SGS2.
Futureproofing is something I didn't really think of. The Dual-Core, though zippy now, has even more room to grow with Gingerbread updates. And considering Samsung's track record with updates, the Atrix will go a lot farther.
The Atrix probably will be my choice unless the screen difference is just that huge.
And I sure do hope the GS2 comes in July.
yea... a friend of mine has the original Motorola Droid on Verizon. He thought about getting the Thunderbolt, but figured it didn't make sense to upgrade to another single-core phone when dual-core phones on Verizon are just around the bend.
And like i said... not entirely sure about the screen, since i haven't actually taken the time to look at a Super AMOLED screen, let alone both side-by-side.... but i quite like the Atrix's screen, even though it is a pentile matrix screen.... mostly because the downside to pentile matrix is only really that noticable if you frequently use 100% brightness or are constantly an inch or a few from your phone's screen.
Your posting in the atrix forum...what answer do you expect

I have been using Atrix for a while now, have to say that even with a huge battery the back up is not great. Bootloader is locked which means no custom goodies. Finger print reader is buggy and slow and irritating. You can not turn off 4g, which takes a lot of battery. Can not turn off haptic feedback etc etc etc .

Wow.... who'd have seen that coming. Another person complaining about the bootloader. Haven't really noticed any issues with the fingerprint reader either, other than when i try to swipe too fast and it doesn't quite get a good read... which is kinda expected. And i may be mistaken.... but can't you turn off 4g/HSPA+ by just choosing a different APN in the mobile network settings? Such as to AT&T US instead of the default AT&T US HSDPA?
eallan: how you figure? I didn't even really know wtf people were complaining about with pentile matrix displays til i actually turned the brightness up to 100% on my Atrix, and even then it's not really a "Hey, that shouldn't be like that" moment.
Extra real estate should be a con lol

Yeah another person. Maybe Motorola should take a hint. Its is big fat CON of the device.
All you have to look at to see the pentile is any color straight line. Especially green. The fact that its a rgbw layout instead of a rgbg layout makes text on white look much better though.

I took the time to mess with the Infuse today. Can't really vouch for the whole visibility in direct sunlight bit.... but i will say two things about it. It is nice... but i still don't like the way it looks. Pentile may not be the greatest display.... but neither is a fantastic Super AMOLED+ with extremely vivid colors. I was looking at both the Infuse and Atrix side by side... trying to get a comparison of the color quality.... and to be honest i prefer the Atrix's. Yeah, it may not be quite top-notch... but i'd rather have slightly less fantastic than over-the-top vivid. Tried to compare the icons... but couldn't. For one, Samsung uses their own custom ones.... and two, what you'd expect to be a decent red would be like a fire engine red. What you'd expect to be a nice mellow blue tone looks like cobalt blue. Think they need to stray away from Xbox-ification. Upping the shinyness doesn't always make something better.
Other than that, it actually seemed to be fairly laggy just pacing back and forth through the default home screens that were on the one at my local AT&T. And i don't mean the "laggy" that people say the Atrix is (which i fail to see).... i mean like you'd move your finger, and depending what's on the screen, it could take two seconds or so for it to actually flip screens.
Having used both I'd wait as you're waiting til July. There will be other choices like the Thrill as well as possibly a SGS2.

i have had the atrix for a couple of months. Bought SGS2 last week and IT IS GETTING RETURNED!
When compared to Atrix: Battery is awful, GPS is poor, sound is poor and it wont make it for more than 4 hours on a charge. I assume the Infuse is going to be similar.
