Web OS on Desire - WebOS Software Development

Hi all
Due to being confused i have posted the same thread in Desire Genereal, Desire Q&A, General, WebOS Hacking&General and WebOS Development.
Please delete the wrong ones.
I was just wandering would it be possible and if there is any brave soul to port Web OS to desire. I have read a bit and would like to try this OS myself. Not rich enough to owe 3 mobiles though :/.
Just let me know if I'm asking/wanting impossible or it is doable and someone may take it on board.
thnx in advance for all replies
Regards
Kirior

I think it should be possible to do it, due to the fact that it also runs on a linux kernel, maybe with somemods on haret it might work... only problem, does anyone have a dumped rom?

It would be a enormous amount of work to do honestly because all current versions of WebOS were designed with a gesture pad and Android phones do not have these. You'd have to figure out how to map all the gesture functions to hardware keys. You'd also have to figure out how to get a virtual keyboard working on the OS right away as the OS was only designed for use with a hardware keyboard.

For the keyboard, I would think that you would try to install the virtual keyboard via PC. That would require hacking to force detect the desire as a pre in webOS quick install or something
Then that still requires the mapping of gestures into hardware buttons
Don't question me about this, I'm not so knowledgable about modding software

It would be no easy task, but to say that the only things standing in the way of this working would be a virtual keyboard and remapping buttons isn't correct at all. In the kernel there are many a way to remap keys, not sure about the gesture pad, but it could work, and the virtual keyboard is just a patch so you could bake it into the rom itself. The whole issue, why noone has even tried is that it isn't legal.

It's all low resolution as well so your stuffed until the pre 3 is out.

As far as I know right now there are no sources for this until the launch of the Pre 3, it would be interesting to see though.

It could be done with some sweat and tears, but just like when it was being ported to the htc hero, webos will not allow it to be copyright

That would be awesome. If it ports to the Desire then its just a matter of some time before it gets ported to the Mytouch 4G/Glacier. Sweet.

Didn't HP let go and let other developers use web OS as well? If so then they can release the hero version and I can try it

It's not the same. I have a Desire Z and a Pre. The optical trackpad and the gesture are significantly different.

Never used a pre, how is it different? EDIT NVM, watched a youtube video!!!
Read the beolw if you want, but for a start here is an interesting link for you:
http://pocketnow.com/software-1/no-palm-pre-go-pro-gesture-launch-on-your-touch-pro
The desire has an optical trackpad as opposed to the desire Z / G2's touchpad. But after realizing the difference in gestures from the video, that difference is kinda mute.
In the old winmo days someone said it was impossible to have mutli-touch on a resistive screen, until a talented dev wrote an sdk for it. It "cheated" by holding one finger in place and moving the other but even recognizing multiple screen inputs was amazing.
I'm kinda lukewarm / "meh" on the idea, but it would be cool to try webos on my own device (desire) just like trying Android on my Vogue (shipped with winmo) was cool. In fact, that's the reason I now own an android device!!!!!!!!!

Can you elaborate on this?
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium

Is anybody working on this? I heard somewhere that there is a team here on xda making this happen, but is it true? I really would like to see this happen and I believe that I am not the only one!

I think the main problem we're facing now is that there are no 3.x kernel drivers available for most of the current devices. Once we have this, porting to a larger number of devices should be quite straight forward.

[Q] any methods for porting the aria rom to htc mini.

I wana android to my htc mini. But i didn't find the suitable rom. anyone help? thanks!
Currently here roms are still in beta, my suggestion would to select a more popular device that has more support than us
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
the android kitchen can port roms from one device to another. i've messed with it on occasion and just doing the basic port process generally results in the rom loading, but a lot of things not working (bluetooth, wifi, camera, etc).
its a good place to start, though.

True but mine has about 20 min of use right now, and I have trust issues on the net.
Well IMO if you have trust issues then stay away from windows mobile. I just upgraded a month back from a windows mobile phone. Interface worked decent but not only was it restrictive it what it allowed me to do it didn't like me to tinker and customize it the way it worked. At least with the android based phone I can see the inner working, understand how and what is going on. And I can disallow whatever I feel isn't good for me.

Its difficult, with winmo we could shutdown winmo with a app and load a os into the phone through the SD card but still there was alot of compatability issues. I'm assuming its going to be the same the other way. Camera will never work or radio ect..

Probably has to do with the fact that you'd be moving out of the grey area of rom flashing and firmly into pirating since you never attained a winmo license.
Which would also mean most sites wont allow it since your work becomes a liability.

its not pirating really, if so then my tilt2 had pirated software on it, i had htc sense (winmo6.5) ported from the hd2 to it plus i dual booted android 2.1 and had a full fledged linux on at some point
the real problem is the reverse engineering which no one wants to do, and i dont speak for all people but for alot of people winmo is become less than useful not saying it sucks because i loved my tilt2 but it had its limitations that my aria doesnt

That version of Sense you had was reverse engineered to a certain point. I can bet you if you took the cab straight from the hd2 and installed it on the Tilt, it either wouldn't install ir would be very, very buggy.
And as i said, doing this would move you out of that gray area. One could make an argument that you've paid for a license for WinMo and Sense and by flashing these new ROMs you're just updating. You can argue the other side, but thats why its called a gray area.
Android in its most basic form is FOSS. Google's apps aren't, but the OS itself is. You can legally install it on whatever you can get it to run on. To be fair, i don't know how they handle distributing it.
Windows Mobile on the other hand is licensed. You HAVE to pay for a new license otherwise you're pirating the os.

Your right and I'm not trying to be an ass
But to break that license you would hafta sell the software modified. They finally passed a law stating basically if its given to the open public it can be modified all u want untilled is sold then its illegal. The one good thing apple brought upon us
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
Not exactly. I think its if you distribute it, not just selling it. From Engadget:
Basically, they just can't sue you for the specific act of breaking their protections but there's nothing stopping them from putting those protections in there in the first place, or for suing you for an infringement not covered in this exception -- like distributing Apple code in a non- Apple-approved way, or installing illegal or pirated software.

i realize this shouldnt be much of a problem to port
the only problem is probably the bootloader and recovery mode are for different OS's but otherwise these phones are almost exactly the same
although i have no idea how to port anything
Not to annoy anybody, but is there somebody even trying to port Android from the Aria to the Mini at this moment? Or is this a real dead one...?
Since the hardware is almost exactly the same, the only major thing should be a safe way to flash from WinMo to Android, or am I wrong?
Guys, are there any developers around here that can give an indication of how hard it is to port an Aria Android Rom onto the HD Mini? Could it be possible that just putting the Aria Rom on a HD Mini will give a 90% working phone (trackpad/screen/windows button are the only differences as far as i know)?

just to keep the thread informative. wireless N is the evolvement of wireless G. More range and bandwith within wireless networks that support the standard. HTC HD2 keyboard
i have tested both the clean and sense version. my preference is the sense. both versions work great. i have been following Darkstone for a while now and his work is amazing!!!
the only, just one thing i wished was kept from the first build is the keyboard. i love the fact that there was a mic feature, it made texting so much easier, the voice recognition is great and really accurate. now the slot is filled with language transcript. you can already do that in settings.

anyone porting Honeycomb to G1 is just being silly and are most probably not real developers , just winzip fail br0z
Thnx for the reply,
I wouldn't condemn anyone trying to port honeycomb onto lower end devices (I can't believe I just called the G1 a lower end device).
Anyway guys like those give guys like us (by the way am in kenya) a chance to get a taste of the real deal cz it might be a while before the zoom and it's cousins get here.
After all it did take 3 years before we could get an android device in our market.

Super slow, the UI is not bad but that's just about it.
Nothing else works. But atleast I now know where to go to launch the apps if I ever get a honeycomb device.

Windows Phone ROM for MT4G?

Is there's a Windows 7 ROM for the MT4G (or other Android phones). Not sure how difficult the coding would be to do or if anyone's even interested in doing one. From the quick scan I just had, I found nothing in the Development section.

I think it's possible because it's virtuously the same hardware that most W7 phone's work on.
But it will never happen because I can't imagine anyone taking their time to port over a W7 ROM. Would be too time consuming since there wouldn't be a demand for it.
But it would be kinda cool to play around with for an hour though.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess there really isn't a demand so no one's going to go through all the hassle to do it.
I just started looking into the Windows Phone platform once Mango was announced over the summer and they look like they got something good happening.
I primarily like the fact that:
1) has a very clean look to it (apps have a very consistent look, even 3rd party ones on the app store)
2) update straight from Microsoft rather than OEMs or carriers (I guess that's also thanks to the "strict" hardware requirement Microsoft has set for OEMs, so software wise, all phones can get updates at the same time, unlike Android's fragmentation)
3) very snappy and not very demanding on hardware
4) simple, but different from iPhone's style
But then again...I'll most likely miss flashing ROMs if I ever do migrate over (however, I think I can live with it if everything's super snappy and there's enough app support for the OS). And really sucks that there's not a lot of WP7 selection for AWS and no tethering yet for the OS.
I'm trying out the Launcher 7 right now, but because it's running as a launcher and Sense is still running in the background, it's killing my battery lol.
I'd love to test a wp 7 ROM or atleast a hybrid version with Android.
From my fist to your face, enjoy!
I am sitting next to a girl right now in my class with a windows phone running Mango

Yep, that's my understanding as well. The hardware drivers don't exist, so they would have to be made from scratch. A huge amount of work to get what is . . .yes a dead OS onto our phone. So unless the OP or somebody he knows is planning to take this on as a project, this is kind of a pointless post.
Other than that, more variety on ROMs is always a good thing. If you don't want it, don't flash it. So there is no real "downside" to having WebOS ported over.
Other than the "because we can" aspects why webOS?
I would much prefer a windows phone Rom...

I'm new to here... but this poll really suit me, as I have currently a Desire Z & a Pre 3! I would love to have webOS on Desire Z but I prefer vertical keyboard. Horizontal keyboard is good but a bit too large for rapid typing.
So my answer is: if I don't have Pre 3, Excellent to have webOS on Desire Z. But since I have one already, it's also a good idea for me to have a Android phone, mostly for apps and games.

Well, "Everything is relative", a smart guy once said. So true. and i must admit, maybe i exaggerated a bit by saying "easy", 'cause nothing i've ever seen related to coding seems easy at all. i know nothing about coding, but i do know that if you can make the processor run without modifications, then the rest won't be too hard. After all, it is a SoC . I may be wrong, but i can't help it.
This would be more like Proof-of-Concept in my books...regardless, I'd definitely give it a whirl!
sorry, but i think i puked a little when i read the topic... I was using webos on my touchpad and damn it was more of a scientific demonstration of what it can do.. it's painfully unpolished.
I've never seen webos. Hellz bellz yeah ill ride that donkey for a day. It cannot possibly be any worse than Amazons horriibly kanged android.
I also want to see XP on it since the fella in that other thread brought it up. MSDOS too.

I'm not too interested to test this.
But, if you can make it work without problems - why not?
I bet there's much people that would like to try this out!
Would be interesting to try.
The more the merrier.
Anyone still interesting?
As HP was released a complete WebOS source and there are GNex port, so any hope to have this charm thing on our phone!
Just curious to see something new in porting for this device.
Keep the fire flaming!

It would be interesting to see, but that's definitely a LOT of work.
Let's see that what's we have here? The most problem with porting job is linux kernel and drivers compatible and fully functionals working. We have some working Android kernel 3.x, the most close version compared with official Linux kernel, WebOS is based on Linux kernel also. If developers still interesting on porting it then they can do it a quite easy than the time before kernel 3.x got working.
