Mytouch 4G tweakin! - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

***If you feel that this post does not belong in this section of the forums, please just send me a pm and let me know where to put it, as i am a complete noob to the whole forum thing. I have never been part of a forum whatsoever before xda. ***
Ok guys, i recently sold my motorola defy and upgraded to the mytouch 4G. It wont be here for a few days, as i ordered it online, so i figured i would take the hiatus and gather up some info and ideas from you wonderful people at the xda forum. That said, any ideas as far as easy rooting, sick/reliable roms (honeycomb preferably, but i am completely open to all and any ideas), and generally anything that you think would benefit me. I will also post a complete video run through of the whole operation upon request, and i will deffinately give bigups to the contributors and use the info given to help others along the way.
Thanks, guys.
PS. This is the dopest forum i have ever found when it comes to phone hacking, and I greatly appreciate all that contribute.

I would suggest either the visionary or gfree method of rooting. After rooting it is recommended to flash the engineering bootloader as it will be easier to recover if you soft brick your phone. Do alot of reading on these items in the mt4g android development forum. There is not a stable honeycomb ROM at this time, but there are some amazing Sense and AOSP ROM's out there (also located in the development section). I use and highly recommend Royal Ginger 2.1..which will probably be 2.2 by the time you get yours. Also, take this time to read up on and set up ADB as it makes life alot easier.

Thaks! Too bad theres no stable gingerbread roms, as i figured there wouldn't be.(I REALLY want a moto xoom) But on the other hand, I had a gingerbread rom on my defy and i really liked it. My battery use was good, it was really fast, and exceptionallyt user friendly, in my opinion. Also, I know that the MT3G had a massive problem with freezing and it was pretty unstable all around. Is this problem persistent in the 4G? And if so, would the rom you recommended fix or at least dampen this problem?

No no. PLENTY of stable and amazing gingerbread ROM's. RoyalGinger 2.1 like I mentioned is gingerbread. In the OP you mentioned honeycomb, which at this time there is not a stable ROM.

No, yea sorry i meant no stable honeycomb roms, my typing got ahead of my thinking XD.

I dont think there are really any stable honeycomb roms on any phone. This is to be expected since honeycomb wasn't open sourced (And might never be, but it's reasonable since honeycomb will be outdated once ice cream sandwich is released for both tablets and phones.)
Either way, welcome to this community of copious amounts of development and cool people. And if you are having issues deciding on a ROM, cyanogenmod is never bad. it's working great so far on the Mytouch 4g.
Also, a bit of input on the rooting method you use. It's not proven 100%, but rooting with the visionary method is safer in the long run. here's the thread with instructions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
Many people prefer the gfree method because it gives you "real" S-off and allows for a few more options like sim unlocking the phone. If you don't need that, just use the one i linked. people who used gfree have been getting errors in recovery that effectively brick their phone. If we learn anything more and it turns out to not be gfree's fault, it's not difficult to use gfree even after using the method i linked. Using the visionary method will still let you do everything you want otherwise like flashing roms and whatnot, but has recently shown to be safer.
also, using the method i linked will flash the engineering hboot, which will help get out of many sticky situations.

I am currently running Virtuous Fusion 1.0.9. It is by far the most stable HTC 3.0 rom out. Its a gingerbread rom, not honeycomb but most honeycomb builds are for tabs anyways unless its one of the few recently or to be release HTC phones anyways.
Virtuous Fusion is the 4th most used rom for the MT4G and is updated regularly by eViL D.

It is fully compatible with Faux123's kernal
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070444.
As my signature states I am currently OC'd at 1.2gHz but the kernel is capable of 1.8.
EDIT: I rooted with the directions on theunlockr.com Mytouch 4G but its not any different from the link posted in a previous thread. Read up on the dev and general forums as they will provide the most knowledge about your newly acquired phone.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-temporarily-root-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/
Follow those instructions leading to perm root. I am just posting what I did. The instructions are easy to follow and those that post on the unlockr.com follow XDA as well.
Oh and welcome to a fantastic community.
Hope you enjoy your MT4G, its a fantastic phone.
Happy flashing buddy.

Thanks for the heads up kim. I will most deff. use visionary, as, currently, i dont need sim unlocking and if i do, im sure i can take it to my uncle and he' ll do it for me.
Also, thanks to rillusion. I'll be trying several different ROM's, so ill make sure to the the forementioned rom in mind, as i love gingerbread. And i know that honeycomb is for the pads, but ya gotta agree, it would be extra beast on on a phone.

I do agree it would be beastly on a phone, sadly a 1gHz processor wouldNT run that the way I would want it to.

Welcome to the community, grubbyfoot!
I also highly recommend Virtuous Fusion by eVil D:. I love the Sense interface and find Virtuous Fusion to be the best ROM I've ever run on any device. It's being updated to version 1.1.0 (waiting for the upload to finish as we speak).
When rooting, Visionary is recommended over other methods for now because of some issues that may or may not be related to gfree's method of rooting. Unfortunately, some devices will just refuse to be rooted using Visionary.

Im gonna slide this on over to Q&A...........
Oh..... almost forgot, welcome to XDA

Lol, ok. and thanks for the welcomes, guys.

You should also try the InsertCoin Rom.

i am also a complete noob, and have never been part of a forum before xda. just rooted for the first time using the visionary method a few days ago, and i am completely wowed at what rooting did. i run the faux123 aosp gingerbread rom, blue bionic theme from the market, and a custom system font from dafont.com. my friend tells me im still just scratching the surface. good luck and happy rooting! go noobs(with help from the dons, of course).
MyTouch 4g rooted, running Faux 1.2.0 AOSP 2.3.4

I recommend RoyalGinger 2.1 as well. After rooting my MT4G and flashing it with that ROM, I can finally say I'm proud of my phone!

OMG!!! THANKS SO MUCH YOU GUYS I JUST GOT DONE PARTIALLY FAMIARIZING MYSELF WITH VIRTUOUS FUSION AND I GOTTA SAY BIGUPS TO EVIL DEE AND ALL WHO DEVELOPED THIS ROM I AM ECSTATIC!!! Sorry for yelling I'm in mild shock n I'm having problems controlling the volume of my typing

ill be getting my dhd in a few hours when it arrives and was wondering about root and roms
whats the best rom for dhd atm? and how easy is the root process? any good guides for it?
Leave stock rom on phone until you are used to the phone, and have tried all settings.
After a while, you will know if there is something you would like changed, and then see if there is a rom for you.
Software is fine just need root really, I know android and sense really well. Was wondering about kernels but only as a maybe
Root's easy. Look in the forum for instructions and follow them exactly and you'll be fine.
As far as custom roms go, I'm using leedroidhd v1.2 and of 4 roms tested, I think it's the best but it's personal opinion of course.
Good luck

[Q] Cons of installing Roms

Specifically Ice Glacier and CM6 and 7.
I know the Pros but I searched all over the place and can't find some Cons. I know CM6 doesn't allow access to front facing camera. Is this true for 7 and Ice Glacier?
What other things might not work?
TIA
P.S. I am rooted. I just don't have the guts to Flash a rom yet.

I am running cm7 nightly #37 I think and the only thing that I am noticing is that my ringtones dont stick after I do a reboot. Other than that I use Tango and the front facing cam does work. I dont see any other things that are not working. I have been running this only for a couple days and maybe not seeing other things not working. All in all the rom is fast and I am loving some gingerbread!! Do a nandroid backup so you can always go back if you want.
There are zero cons to installing ROMs. CM7 is just fantastic.

Froyo vs Gingerbread, I think, but don't quote that as I don't run a CM ROM.
With any ROM you will roll the dice on what will/won't work for you. I have had absolutely zero issues using the Ice Glacier ROM in my sig. However, if you read recent posts in the thread for it, some people still experience issues with things like WiFi, slowdowns, battery drain, etc. Not all silicone is created equal. Just backup your current stuff and flash something to see how it works on your phone. Doesn't run well, has some issues? Pick a new ROM or restore backup.
cm 7 is based on Gingerbread -- Android 2.3. Numerous changes, Google for them.
Big con to any ROM...bricked phone through user error, user stupidity, user ignorance... Take your pick. The risk is low but it exists. Manage and mitigate it through careful study and a firm grasp of the procedures to be used.

It is extremely difficult to permanently brick your phone. The only way I know how to do it is to flash the wrong kind of radio, which you normally don't even have to worry about flashing.
Let's see... there's a thread in this very subforum where someone damaged the partition table of their internal flash drive, and lost /system, and could find no way to recover:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952272
The root cause may have been from pulling the battery at an inopportune moment, and the OP gave up before exhausting all options, but the phone is logically bricked.
Hardly any unless you're not careful with instructions. CM7 RC1 is fantastic.
Does anyone see problems with 4G coverage with a newer rom, or is HSDPA not a concern?

The stock ROM and those based on it do not differentiate between 3G and any faster network. All are indicated with an "H". CM displays UMTS as "3G".
HTC Glacier CM7 41
Only cons are you void your warranty and you could screw something up if you aren't careful. Playing around in non-userspace is only for the well-informed.
Arguably, you could consider it a con that your ROM isn't officially signed by the manufacturer/carrier and that it's not "official," but I don't see it that way. A good dev team like Cyanogen's is probably just as good, if not better, and they can roll out updates much much faster. Nightly, in fact
FWIW, I was one of the few who did experience problems when flashing (CM7 in my case). Each time I flashed, I would lose more and more functionality on the physical buttons on the front of the camera.
- First flash, "back" starts acting flaky (doesn't work sometimes, sometimes requires long-press to work).
- Second flash (to try to fix the problem), back button no longer works, "menu" is now flaky.
- Third flash, menu is gone. Somewhere in there the genius button also stopped working.
ClockworkMod Recovery's key test showed that the system wasn't even seeing the keypresses. Sounds like a hardware problem, I know, but the changes noted occurred only when I flashed. Also, when I reflashed with the stock MT4G ROM, I got the menu button back (but not the back button).
All that said, a) I searched high and low and couldn't find any reports of anything similar, and b) TMo switched the phone out with a new one with no questions asked.
It's not all user error, and it's not all hardware. It's a combination, and like others have said you have to try it out to see. If you read enough threads on this forum, you will find negatives about everything. Do the research so you know what not to do, and the rest is up to trial and error. The variables around which people judge ROMs are so complex that the vast majority of information is opinion. Just make sure you give any ROM a couple of days before you really form your own.
Biggest cons for me when I first started flashing ROMs on my old MT3G was that sometimes stuff wouldn't work. Wifi issues or GPS might be buggy or battery drain. 9/10 issues can be fixed with a reboot or just wait for the next nightly to arrive.
I love flashing ROMs. I'm on CM7 RC1 and before that was Nightly #35. I had my MT4G for 7hrs before it was rooted and CM7 on it.
You're already rooted and most of the time thats when people break their ****. So get Clockwork Mod and Nand backup, flash and rock out!!!!!!
Most of the "danger" is in the actual rooting process, flashing ROMs and mods can at most cause an inconvenience.
Any time the radio firmware or hboot (bootloader) is flashed or modified, that is where the danger of a true bricked device that can not be fixed occurs.

I did a back up before flashing CM7 RC1 but when I attempted to restore, my phone froze...Any suggestions or Ideas, anyone else have this problem ? Thank you in advance for your help....XDA Rocks and thanks to all the DEVS who put such great effort in getting these great ROMS out to us....

[Q] android noob

Having taken the plunge for my first android phone namely the SE X10 on a standard rom and already rooted it, I'm just wondering if any of you would like to give me some tips on what to do next with this phone having being a wm 6.1 user for many years I'm at a bit of a loss with this one I've never used linux or any of the derivatives of that software which I'm lead to believe android is based, so pretty much clueless with this one kind regards Mcpaddy.

Good places to start:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=989129
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page&pagename=SonyEricssonXperiaX10
Basically you need to decide whether you want to go with a totally custom ROM, or modify the SE 2.1 ROM.
If you go total custom there are some guides to do it as telmoabff linked above.
I chose to just mod the 2.1 SE ROM and there are many different options you can go with, also many guides which will help you out.
You can get some very good customization / performance out of the 2.1 SE ROM...however, to get the absolute best performance / totally custom you will have to go with one of the user developed ROMs.
(Since I am kind-of new to this as well someone please correct me if I am wrong.)
I would root, install xrecovery and then z's freex10 b4 froyo rom as its the simplest and most stable rom i have tried. Once you have it running good then make a backup and try out any of the roms that float your boat, you can always just restore back to z's rom if things go wrong. Very hard to break the x10 have put mine in bootloop bout 6 times trying out the cool stuff on here but always been able to fix it!
Just my opinion tho

FreeX10 is the base for which all of the X10 Froyo ROMs are built, if you want something that has more tweaks and features Wolfbreak's CyanogenMod 6.1.3 ROM is a good one with a lot of support and features. Id go custom if I were you mainly because of the fact that 2.1 doesnt support Flash or app2sd which are 2 features that really make android great.

Do NOT flash your phone with 3rd party ROMs

Do NOT flash your hero phone with 3rd party ROMs unless necessary. I have played with many kinds of ROMs for 1 year. Most of them are downright laggy, unstable, or battery-draining although you could have some new features. These Roms are not fully tested. Some of them even contain spyware... You normally need to wipe your phone for most 3rd party ROM updates and that means you need to re-configure your phone again and again.. Now, I got my stock ROM back after making a Gold-card and I'm very satisfied with my HTC stock ROM. This is a fast, stable, power-saving and fully-tested ROM. Upgrade is very smooth and not painful.
I would suggest you to flash your phone by RUU and then root it by some tools, e.g. http://www.unlockroot.com/. But, please keep an eye on the install procedure. Do not install unnecessary apps unless you want.
The above is only my personal experience. Hope it helps.

My used ROMs include Crons, CM, Villian and some others that I can't remember. At present, I don't think there is any spyware in Crons, CM, Villian. Crons, CM, Villian are generally recognised as good 3rd pary ROMs. However, I don't think any of them is more stable or faster than stock ROMs.
I found some spywares installed as system apps in some Chinese ROMs disributed from hiapk.com and bbs.anzhi.com.. These are individual-maintained ROMs.
To my understanding, if an app requires extra permissions than what it actually needs, then that could be a spyware.
I'm not a professional mobile device developer. What I need is a rooted ROM that is bugless, does it job well and therefore suitable for everyday use.

I'm a custom rom addict, rarely do I have a rom for more than 2 months before looking for something which more/better features. Sure there's some laggy roms out there, most of which are still in beta so you can't expect them to be "perfect" Roms. That said, there's plenty of excellent roms being worked on by some very clever and creative people, that go above and beyond the features stock roms offer. This http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1435655 new rom is better than stock, i think its not rubbish.
Why are u on a site dedicated to customizing and creating development for devices if u think stock is best. Shouldn't that be on the HTC website I'm sure they have a forum for that lol

The fact is that some Sense lovers are tired of laggy new sense ports I guess
Therefore, a stock android ROM is not a choice.
So, in a way, I must admit that gnubot is right.
But we can't deny that the work that JieeHD, dastin1015, elelinux and other devs did is pretty awesome!
And to finish, I don't really remember how many months HTC devs took to make a correct release of the new Sense...

That is SO correct!!
I've tried non-Sense roms, they're great and fast and stable and good-looking, but not for me... i don't feel comfortable with them.
I even have got back to generic 1.5. So getting back to stock is not a solution.
At this moment, i have Wildheroc RoseV5, it's sense and it's GB.
I'm waiting for the Zero Hero Sense 3.5 to be "stable" and i'll flash it
I just had to post in this thread because of the title. It's pretty ridiculous that you'd create a topic on this site as bline007 said and not somewhere else. Especially using that topic title? You didn't really expect that anyone would agree with you I hope. For your sake I can only assume you meant to say "Be careful I've found some 3rd party roms with spyware" or the like.
P.S. I apologize for the flameish response but I feel a lot of patronage for this site and it's members because of the work massive amount of work and personal time they have spent to make my 'legacy' phone go out of it's comfort zone just to bring us features, options and a longevity we never expected from this phone. So please don't taint the hard work of the developers by making posts with titles as such.

[Q] Pick a favorite ICS rom

So I am currently running stock ICS on my A500 and was thinking of putting a 3rd party rom on it. Currently the OEM rom is fine, only 1 issue and that is, its not mounting usb when connected to my computer...
But thats another time, for now I would like to get some opinions on some current roms for our device. I want something that is: fast, lightweight, everything must work. Thats basically it, pretty easy, I dont ask for much
So just doing a quick search, I found 3 roms that look pretty popular and fit most of my requirements. A fourth would be stock ICS (current rom).
~~Taboonay_3.0.1~~ Link
~~Lightspeed_4.7~~ Link
~~Flexreaper_4.0.3~~ Link
The flexreaper rom I picked also has no games installed, Extreme edition.
My recommendation would be Flexreaper ;]

I suggest a moped...
From your selection I`ll recommend FLEXREAPER too and maybe the extreme version because you are all ready on ICS bootloader.
But personal, means with full hearth, I recommend tegraowners ICS ROM v168! This ROM has a lot more options then FLEXREAPER f.e. USB modem support for a500.
m.
AOKP officially supports the A500 too, but I don't think their ROM is complete.
I'm running Flexreaper with the latest ICS bootloader = OVERCLOCKING. So the speed is there, lots of crap has been stripped out of the ROM and there is nothing that I know of that doesn't work.
The Tegraowners ROM has a lot of extra features that the ROMS on here don't have but if you also read the thread there are a lot of people who have problems here and there for it. I've tried it. It's slick but I fell Civ's is just as good and he is more helpful to the XDA community.
Well Civato is definitely a great guy , but Thor is very helpful not only to this community but many more , XDA thwarts progress in many ways (i wont go into the thor deal) ,but I wouldnt suggest one over the other , they are both outstanding and we are lucky to have the "few" devs for a500 that we have , I remember a bout a year ago there was twice as many ,xda seems to run alot of these guys out for what ever reason (not my problem) ! Your gonna get complaints from whatever rom you choose , I would suggest reading the OP for the rom and then re-reading it often ,your less likely to have problems that way!
We have many talented devs in here !
I've been running various versions of Flexreaper for a while now, and I really like it. I tried taboonay for a while, but Flexreaper worked better for me. I also love having the Acer ring. I don't know how many ROMs have that, but its handy for sure. Civato (Flexreaper Dev) is putting out new stuff all the time, too.
Have tried them all. Personnaly flexreaper has been the best for me. As long as you do a full wipe before installing and have the correct bootloader installed. The best thing to do is check them out yourself. I stayed away from betas and test builds until I learned restore and recovery techniques, as I locked up my tablet the first time I flashed a new rom.
