Gingerbread update tonight question - Droid X General

So the gingerbread update is supposed to come out tonight, and one of the suggestions from moto. Was if your rooted to flash back to to stock software, im on the stock rom and stock everything but with a few rooted apps installed. So should I flash back, or can I just unroot with z4root unroot button. Thanks for the quick reply

If you care about root, I wouldn't accept the update until they root it. No one knows for sure what exactly will keep the update from working on your phone. If you want the update, Froyo stock unrooted is the safest bet.

There is a thread on what you need in this forum

Thanks for the reply I do want the update, im on the stock froyo with stock kernals. with some rooted apps installed, so I can just hit unroot on z4root and it will uninstall rooted stuff?

Yes, did you ever flash clockworkmod or bootstrap?
If all you did was root, use z4 to unroot.

Yeah never flashed with clockwork or anything, the most I did was change the boot animation using root tools but I put it back to the stock one, been waiting for gibgerbread for awhile lol

Cool thanks for advice, unrooted my phone and will wait for update

You may not be able to get it rooted however. Be careful

Still telling me update not available .. I'm guessing its due to me deleting the bloat wares.. I've not flashed or cloaked worked anything.. Just root. Delete wares..

Before Froyo, I was rooted and stock everything. (I really just wanted wi-fi tether and titanium backup). the OTA still worked fine, obviously I lost root, but I didn't lose anything else. Assuming you haven't flashed a new rom nor deleted stock apps, you should be fine. I don't think there's a way for the OTA to differentiate phones if they have the same basebands...

Ok this explains a lot...
If people aren't able to update.. this maybe why..
Copy and past this link.. i dont have enough posts to link to it.. ±★★gottabemobile.com/2011/05/27/droid-x-gingerbread-update-rolling-out-tonight-but-not-for-everyone

Be careful. You won't be able to upgrade if you deleted bloatware as it checks for system integrity before updating.

Thanks for testing it for us! Running nice and stable on apex, going wait and see if the new "bugs" are worth updating to.

Would i lose root after 2.2 froyo ota update?

Would i lose root after 2.2 froyo ota update on 21st? If so, how do i get back to root? Sorry for newb question.
First u probably won't get the ota cuz u are rooted ......u need to odin back to di18 stock for u to get the update... or wait a lil longer to have one of ur devs. Cook some rom ready for our root phones... personally I won't go back to di18 ... but if our devs told us (which I don't think we need to) to do it.. then ill be happy to do it...
And to get root back from 2.2 do the same method u did fro 2.1

Is the OP on 2.2? I'm still on DI18, and it has been fine for me. I rooted, but that's it. Would I still get the OTA?
It was my understanding that you could get the OTA update while rooted, as long as it wasn't a custom ROM. Someone chime in?
Way to NOT search people, I mean seriously....
But anyway like the last half a dozen threads asking THIS EXACT SAME QUESTION, you cannot OTA unless you are on a stock rom with the stock recovery, if you don't want to revert then wait less than a day and it will be in flashable .zip form.
You should be able to get the OTA if you're rooted on di18 and still have stock recovery. The update will most likely break your root, though. All you will have to do to get root back is run the one-click.
Yes

Correct you will lose root but will get the update. You have to lose any roms also clockwork I think. Not positive so maybe someone else can comment on that.

Nevermind.
Question: I used one click root, and it deleted the asphalt demo. Using root explorer, I reinstalled the stock app, but it gave me a notice that asphalt was still in the system apps. I know you need to have all the stock apps when updating, so will I have any problems?

Ya, as other users have said, 2.2 is stock so it should ova update but remove your root (was in thesame situation with my mytouch and 2.2). Of course just superoneclick after you update and you're good to go
Thanks for the question and REAL ANSWERS

Manual Gingerbread OTA update is here

Pulling mine as we speak!

I have also got mine. I am hoping to have root soon. Im not quite sure if there is an easy root for this version. I would look in the other posts, but there are too many custom gb roms out there and leaks im not sure which one would not brick me.
edit. I was wondering with the new folder system if i can somehow hide all the vzw apps so i dont see them anymore. I know someone mentioned it can be done, i just cant find it
Installing mine right now. tgrantjr, I hear ya on the leaked versions. What bothers me is it seems every version released was pre rooted, took the control of root and unroot away from us. When I sbf'd back to froyo, it was a simple one click to unroot and install the ota gb release.
Was on a rooted GB leak and of course couldn't pull jack... SBF'ed to 2.3.34, wipe + reset, OTA kicked in. Boring legitimacy here I come!

[Q] z4 Rooted Droid X to Gingerbread

I have a Droid X that I have rooted using z4 Root. Will I have any problems if I un-root and then download and install Gingerbread? I realize that z4 Root can't root Gingerbread yet, but I was wondering if I could just un-root and then install the update and just wait to re-root it when z4 Root can do it? It seems like people are having issues with the X even though they un-root before they update. Why is this? Thank you all for your time. I appreciate it.
People usually have problems updating because they have deleted or frozen bloat in their system folder.
If you unroot, and replace any bloat you may have removed, you should be able to update without a hitch.
After you download the OTA Gingerbread you won't be able to gain root again. The only option is two flash a two part prerooted install of .596 Gingerbread provided by Team Black Hat.

Thank you much. I shouldn't have any problem then because I haven't frozen or deleted anything. Is the z4 Root developer going to try to make a version of z4 Root that will root Gingerbread?

I for one hope so. I want to be on Gingerbread, but the OCD in me wants the OTA.
Question- OTA? What does it stand for?

Over The Air.
I unrooted with z4 Root and did a wipe and a restore to factory reset. I tried to update to GingerBread 4 times but all four times it failed. Somehow, even in the return to factory wipe, ClockworkMod Recovery stays on the Droid X. Why? I think it is the ClockworkMod Recovery that is preventing me being able to update to GingerBread. Do you think that might be the cause? In other words, resetting it to factory condition doesn't really reset to factory condition. How do I fix this? Should I just stay rooted with z4 Root and wait for a way to update to GingerBread from you guys? I'm just not sure what to do. Thanks for your time. I'm running Android Version 2.2.1 with a System Version of 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US.
Root froyo with z4 then follow directions on this thread

I did not unroot...
Hello...Noob here. Question I did not indoor my DROID b4 downloading 2.3
Should I have? And what will happen since I didn't?
I also have one other question. I accidentally tapped on Updates and now it is trying to download the update. Is there a way that I can stop this manually? Thanks.

i thought you wanted to update to gb? why would you want to stop it?
why dont you just update to the pre-rooted gingerbread. see here http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...-5-596-release-thread-something-everyone.html
I want to stop it because I have tried to install it 4 times and it has failed to install on all four attempts. It won't install so I don't want to waste the time and the data.
The link is not working for me either
Follow the instructions below to return to froyo or upgrade to gb rooted or not.
Check out these links.
Link 1 makes a linux CD that you can use to SBF back to Froyo in about 10 minutes. This is a very easy method to get back to froyo. If you can burn an iso file to a CD then you can do this method.
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/d...-solution-your-windows-rsd-lite-problems.html
Then you can use z4root and install pre-rooted GB using the 2 flash method at link 2. Make sure that you use Droid 2 bootstrapper and not Droid X bootstrapper to install the rooted GB.
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/05/28/download-official-droidx-gingerbread-4-5-596-for-rooted-users/
Follow the instructions closely for ensured success.
This can all be done in about 30 to 45 minutes depending on your computer skills.

This guide u posted can used even if I'm on the ota gingerbread update?

Fixed the link,
U can go directly from rooted froyo to rooted gb using TBH GBroot flash. Flash just like u would a rom, and u might need to install the update the kernal depending if you flash a rom. Its easy, just follow my link and scroll down to my post it gives u the steps

original g2 rom

so i had to go back to my first original rom that i backed up when i first rooted my g2 by using visionary. as soon as i installed my back up it showed that i had a update. i have android 2.2 so im sure its the 2.3 update,
well my question is if i update it will that unroot my phone and uninstall my rooted apps?? and if it does unroot me can tmobile track that it was rooted it?
keeps asking me over and over to update it
thanks alot , sorry if this been posted before, i couldn't find it if it was
Yes it will unroot it, if it is the 2.3 update, if you removed stock apps it will attempt and fail. Just update to a pre-rooted 2.3 end of problem. If you search there is other possible alternatives.
thanks alot, one last question, so if i want to unroot my phone at some point, i just uninstall my root apps and do the 2.3.3 update? will tmobile ever know if it was rooted by doing it this way?

[Q] return to (modified) stock with OTA fully working

Hi people!
I'm thinking about revert my A500 back to pure stock ROM.
But, my plan is get a package from here and remove some kind of bloatware, like the included games, Aupeo, Lumiread and so on. But none of the Acer stuff.
This way, can I be able to still get OTA updates?
Thanks!
If you load a complete stock rom .. and remove anything that acer put on it you will Likely be able to accept the OTA S BUT will not be able to install them.. They check against every app that was pushed by them one missing or frozen . NO GO..
This has been how past updates have worked.. You can freeze apps . ROOT REQUIRED.. then undo your changes to get the ota ..

Actually, they check the checksums if I'm not mistaken. But erica_renee is correct, if you mess with the stock it will not install the OTA. It might see the OTA and download it, but won't install or it might not even see it.
I rooted on 3.1 to remove bloat before accepting the 3.2 update and the update worked as advertised. It was a waste of time though, the OTA reinstalled the bloat, so you're probably better off with a rooted stock rom if you want the most current version without bloat. I wish I had stayed rooted on 3.1 and flashed a rooted stock 3.2 instead of unrooting for the OTA.
I know this is my first post but please take my word on this, you'll be stuck withthebloat after an OTA.
