[Q] Ginger yoshi 1.1 (android 2.3.4) - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Tried posting this in Ginger yoshi 1.1 (android 2.3.4) for 32b and 32a ^_^, but apparently new users aren't allowed to post in those threads, so here goes.
#1 How do I keep the Wifi powered on even after the screen turns off in ROM v1.1?
#2 As I do not have any carrier services on my device, after the intial boot, time
goes out of sync quite rapidly. My guess is the new kernel with all of its power
optimizations, keeps the CPU deactivated/in a low power state for lot of clock cycles. Although it greatly extends battery life, the clock quickly lags behind.
Android already has time syncing service built in, but unfortunately it only seems to do that during boot time, but never after that. Now if it can be modified to work like the windows time syncing service, that would be great. Maybe it can sync time once every 3-6 hours and if wifi was disabled for a preiod longer than that, then as soon as the wifi device was activated & a internet connection was available.
#3 The SDHC flash card in my device has 3 partitions, FAT32, EXT4 & Linux SWAP. When I flashed GY ROM v1.1 it activated a swap on the EXT4 partition; my guess is this works similar to Windows swap file on the system partition, where as Linux uses a seperate partition for SWAP. Question is, does Android or GY ROM able to see & use the SWAP at the end of the SDHC card?
I ask because, if Android/GY ROM can see/use the Linux SWAP partition, I can tell it not to install a SWAP file in the EXT4 partition. On the other hand if it can't, I can just delete the Linux Swap partition & enlarge the EXT4 partition by extending it into the freed space.
Thanks in advance for any help!
P.S. yohshua, thank you for still continuing to support G1 users with all of your hard work & a great ROM.

You might try posting your questions here. That is the thread for issues with gingeryoshi.

1 go to wifi setting and then once there press the menu key and then go to advance there you will see wifi sleep policy then just click never and there you go
2 the time problem will have to be looked into and to see what can be done
3 a new swap way will be in the next build that should be able to use the swap portion just fine
i hope this answers your questions and you keep enjoying the rom ^__^

#1 DOH!! [How did I forget that? I had changed that very same setting once before, previous to flashing 1.1 ROM & then just forgot all about it!]
#2 That is terrific news! Time syncing has been a big problem since Android 1.6!
#3 Once again, great news! Hopefully the swap file created in the EXT4 partition or will be deleted when flashing the new ROM & do we do not have to manually.
Thank you very much for replying, also putting in your time & effort to bringing us a ROM still supporting G1's. Guess these old buggers will keep chugging along for a while longer, next to Dual Core & soon to come Quad Core ARM phones!
P.S. could I have your permission to post your answers, as reply, to the threads/posts I have posted theses questions in? It is to help out anyone else who might have similar questions.

(Software) Free Paragon Partition Manager 10 TODAY ONLY

Hey guys, just an FYI-
Giveawayoftheday.com is featuring the above listed download for 17 more hours. This is NOT warez, as multiple companies allow free downloads for a 24 hour period. My advice is to download and activate this software FAST, as there are only about 17 more hours (as of this posting) to activate it. I've found PPM 9.0 to be very easy to use while partitioning, repartitioning, and formatting my card.
It's quicker than typing it all in console
Go HERE
There's also a link for 64bit system users on that page. Happy downloading.

if im not mistaken auto partition like this (PARAGON) sometimes makes some issues when flashing, they said manual partitioning still better,

I second that. PM 10 is awesome for PCs, but I wouldn't use it to partition my G1. There are partitioning tools built right into the latest Cyanogen's recovery image, and scripts around it to make it easier to use.
Helpfull for noobs.. Nice find.. WIll this work for the G1? The trial ones would only partition your local drives C:\
cheers
partition manager provides an easy way for the windows user to create the correct paritions in the correct order on any sd card so is valuable in this instance.
also aside from that its brilliant if you want to move a complete operating system to a new drive, it does this with vista and the machine wont even ask for reactivation.
anyways thats way off topic...
its definately worth using instead of Gparted if you havnt got a linux based setup.
PEACE. THANX.

It's funny how things work differently for everyone. I'm running Vista x86 and never had issues partitioning my SD card on my g1. Anyhow, some may find it useful.
Just downloaded and saved I'd rather use cyanogen's recovery image though
Thank you Sr. I do find it useful .. I have always used Paragon to partition my G1 with no problems at all..
awesome man. thanks for that site. after going through some of the stuff they have given away, im gonna check it daily now. Yesterday was driver magician
Thanks for the tip! Paragon Partition Manager is the best partition software I've ever used!
real men use the parted cli
Thanks for the software, but I honestly don't like it. I prefer just booting into linux to use GParted or popping in a GParted Live USB stick

Trust me, I do the same. I keep it bookmarked in my cell and on my PC
Just to let you guys know what has happened to me in the past with paragon. I was able to use it and was very simple but 2 times out of the 3 or 4 months I used it something went wrong with the partitioning which caused my pc to crash. Thus leaving me to reinstall the OS all over again. Good thing I kept everything backed up though.
Thanks for the find, unfortunately im downloading at 15kb/s. I feel like im using aol from 95

developing for the DSTL1 / N21

I want to try developing for the DSTL1 / N21
There are quite a few interesting things we can do...
Success has been been seen by xda-devs such as JesusFreke, Amon_RA, Haykuro, and Cyanogen (yes there others) in the field of Android ROMs. The ground work is there, porting and developing can commence.
Why do this?
Current ROM 1.5 - has many problems...
Unofficial ROM 1.6 - is a GREAT improvement, but makes one hungry for something better...
It would be awesome to have some success in this field. I know this device is capable of so much more, but I believe the implementation of the system is the issue. This is not the phone developers fault, as they have their own company agenda, but we could improve our own performance and satisfaction .
For example, my device (1.6 rooted) lags with having only ~50% CPU utilization and ~50MB RAM free...
Overclocking (i mean forcing full CPU capacity - 624Mhz) the CPU has barely helped and only aided battery drain...
Relevant comparison of G1 vs DSTL1 (N21) are
RAM - G1: 192MB vs DSTL1: 128MB
CPU - G1: 528Mhz vs DSTL1: 624Mhz
These specification comparisons say that G1 can run a better ROM than DSTL1? I don't think so. DSTL1 only loses in RAM, which can be made up for using swap!
Devs had success with techniques using: App2SD, swap, ext3, and BFS (faster file system). I believe we could do something impressive here! There are pros and cons to this.
Developers and Testers would be needed. A team of 5 developers and a few testers should be able to get us on the right track. We would definitely need Linux experience, or the desire and ability to soak up all the info on Google
A Linux kernel is a must for this phone, we would have to compile our own... It would be nice to preserve DUAL SIM, but in reality we might have to give up this luxury, as it is proprietary code, unless a new ROM is made backwards compatible (which is possible).
Cyanogen's Github is available for knowledge osmosis http://github.com/cyanogen
A DSTL1 Recovery by Amon_RA (based on Cyanogen's Recovery) is already in Beta...
Cool things are possible. Could I find some developers willing to donate their free time?
Please limit responses to dev talk.
reserved for later
crzyruski,
Believe it or not the very luxury you talk about giving up(dual sim) is the reason why may of us bother to buy these phones(DSTL1\N21) in the first place. Other wise we might as well go with a mainstream phone such as hero etc.

Its a possibility that I'm not going to ignore, so I stated it.
The point is that the current OS is lacking. Initially we would want to port and learn from porting of the quality ROMs available now. Those obviously don't support dual-SIM.
Progress needs to start from somewhere. When someone releases a new port or ROM not all pieces work... look at the Eclair (2.0) port, half the features don't work!
If enough heads came together we could probably retain dual-SIM, common this is linux and I've seen the most amazing development come to realization. I just need the teamwork because it might take me a whole year in my spare time...
Having a kernel working
Hi,
the most important IMHO is having a kernel working, built from sources.
Obviously, some closed source drivers must be rewritten, notably the NXP5209 (the GSM modem), if we want the device to be useful (i.e. if we want to make phone call).
My first attempt of booting with a custom kernel was unsucessfull (black screen), which brings to the second point: the lack of some sort of console for kernel debuging.
Any idea regarding the NXP? Anyone is aware of some opensource driver or specs?
Any idea also regarding kernel debugging in the N21/DSTL1?
sfabris
@sfabris
I will try to find info for the questions you have.
My initial work will be to make an emulator so we can test on PC and not our devices (because we need them functional for every day life )
Have you checked out how other modders have done kernel modifications?
Namely JF and Cyanogen?
I can't begin to comprehend so I'm glad you took the initiative with this.
Lets make some progress

Maybe we have it all wrong???? Maybe its PNX?
PDA DB reports DSTL1 as having Nexperia PNX5209 (ARM946) Phone Controller.

As I'm forced to HTC G1 until I'll wait the replacement for my N21 I'll go in detail on the kernel boot process on other hardware.
A fast way to test kernel in our every day device is kexec which should work also on ARM.

As far as I understand, kexec is a program that can run a new kernel on the fly...
So I could try a new kernel right from my device without reflashing?
have you tried this? Or is this still theory?

I've tried it on x86, never on arm.
Support is there also for arm, but this not imply that also the Marvell PXA is supported.
It's basically the same way of booting Android from WM via haret.
Fastest way to boot your new kernel or to crash your machine
I have created an emulator.
FYI, LCD density should be 120.
Edit: Technically the density is 133...
files prevent recovery-RA-DSTL1-v1.2.3 from loading
I have been wrestling with the beta recovery-RA-DSTL1-v1.2.3
Amon_RA retrofitted his own recovery image to work for the DSTL1 (N21)...
IT HAS AWESOME POTENTIAL.
Currently ADB RECOVERY SHELL + ROOT is the only thing that is functional.
But I haven't been able to get in touch with him to continue work on it.
The following files prevent me from booting into RA's Recovery, so I remove them:
- e2fsck
- mke2fs
- parted
- tune2fs
Once I am in ADB RECOVERY SHELL I can push them back on and do what I need to do.
Unfortunately the changes are persistent so if I were to reboot and try Recovery Mode again, it won't load
What is so special about those four programs that prevent my recovery from loading?????
is there any ways to update the firmware of N21
hi,
i'm just buy a sciphone n21 (actually is already in our office for 2 weeks but find it now:-( )
and i've to face myself in a situation that i can't use this phone:-( since i buy this phone because:
- i assume that google apps auto sync contact and calendars. unfortunately this phone has not google apps by default.
- and has dual sim support.
so my question: is there any way to upgrade it to a firmware which support is?
can i do anything to use my phone?
thanks in advance.
regards.

e2fsck is a filesystem check utility for ext2
mke2fs is for ext2 filesystem creation
parted is a partitioning tool
tune2fs is for change some filesystem parameters (usually checking interval)
I've read that recovery from Amon-Ra creates automatically 3 partitions (ext2, swap and FAT32). So those commands whould probably mean ext2 filesystem creation. I'm sure Amon-Ra could give us more information on this subject because he added them to the image.
Have you checked your SD card?.
PD: I'm waiting for my N21 . So I can't test yet.

Thank you for that insight.
I am not sure what RA's recovery would have done on its own...
but I have initiated and completed successfully a partition of my SDCard that includes FAT32, swap, and ext2.
Now that I have done this, for experimentation really, I don't know how to use it and what it gives me.
Obviously the swap is useless because I would need a cooked Android ROM that would actually utilize swap.
ext2 is probably for apps2sd... which I tried unsuccessfully - probably because of my own mistake.
I will continue trying and report again later.
As far as Amon_RA, he mentioned he was working on upgrading all the recovery images he has put out to the next version - thus we will be in queue until this comes to pass. Maybe we can just skip this version and go to the next
N21 vs DSTL1: stock comparisons
I have completed the comparison of recovery images of the DSTL1 and N21.
For this test I used an original mtd2.img from my DSTL1 and an original mtd2.img from Slemmen's N21.
The recovery images are identical:
Both mt2.img are 4,194,304 bytes
Both mtd2.img-kernel are 2,141,616 bytes
Both mtd2.img-ramdisk.gz are 386,645 bytes
What is also interesting to note is that the two boot images i inspected were also identical.
The DSTL1 boot image is one that came with the 1502 update from General Mobile (which may or may not be identical to the original).
The original N21 boot image, thanks to ikarishinjisan, is identical to the DSTL1 boot image:
Both mt1.img are 4,194,304 bytes
Both mtd1.img-kernel are 2,141,816 bytes
Both mtd1.img-ramdisk.gz are 148,671 bytes
*Notice how both recovery and boot are the same size... must be padded?
*Notice how boot kernel is 200 bytes more than recovery kernel.... interesting...
On a side note:
Bootloader is identical as expected: both ikarishinjisan's and my mtd0.img are 1,048,576 bytes.
If things are going to go custom, it might make some sense to put ext3 filesystems on these things.. ext3 is just ext2 with journalling, which could be helpful since phones can just die/get dropped/lose connection with battery/whatever.
Also, this can be done with the tools already there..
mkfs.ext2
tune2fs -j

Are you referring to the Amon_RA's custom recovery?
I can't get tune2fs onto the recovery without trickery, definitely not noob friendly... until we figure out why.
But great suggestion
I'm guessing the ROM must be coded to make use of ext3, otherwise its worthless?
The kernel would need to be configured to support ext3.

Few MyTouch3G Questions

I Have a few questions about the mytouch3g.. they may be dum to yu but here they are, btw my first post,
#1. Can rooting the mytouch3g skrew up the internals hardware in any way?..
#2 if i flash a rom too many times can it skrew up the device in any way?.(i flash supercsdi after every new rom i find i flash like 5 roms a day, and now when i flash supercsdi, when i enable apps2sd it leaves my phone on a black screen after reeboot)

#4 what is linux swap and how does it work?..
Last question last question,
#5. I have a tmobile g1, and it has cyanogenmod 5.0.8 on it and the speed on the gq w. This rom is unbelivably fast, so i tried it on the mytouch3g.. and its really slow.. how can i make it faster?..

#1. Can rooting the mytouch3g skrew up the internals hardware in any way?..
YES if you can't read you can brick your phone by improperly flashing the radio and spl. And frequent flashing can mess up the nand blocks but this would have to be very frequent and excessive. I've heard of a few errors but never heard of anyone messing up their nand completely because of it.
#2 if i flash a rom too many times can it skrew up the device in any way?.(i flash supercsdi after every new rom i find i flash like 5 roms a day, and now when i flash supercsdi, when i enable apps2sd it leaves my phone on a black screen after reeboot)
You should always wipe before changing to a different rom version or build.
Although it may not be required it is suggested.
#3. Can apps2sd shortent my sdcards life?
YES! I haven't experienced it for myself but the more of anything that you use the less it lives. If you're constantly using it then obviously it can shorten the lifespan of the card.
#4 what is linux swap and how does it work?..
Linux swap is a swap partition on your sdcard that your phone uses as virtual memory. Just like the pagefile of your Windows computer.
Say for example you have an older computer that only has 512 or ram and your running Vista or 7. You may get better performance by enabling virtual memory or pagefile which uses your hard drive when your ram is used at it's max. Of course Linux is different than Windows and of course a phone is different than a pc however the basic principal is the same. When your phone runs out of memory it uses the swap partition on your sdcard to compensate. Not all roms support this though and not all developers recommend it. However some roms cant't go without it.
#5. I have a tmobile g1, and it has cyanogenmod 5.0.8 on it and the speed on the gq w. This rom is unbelivably fast, so i tried it on the mytouch3g.. and its really slow.. how can i make it faster?..
Without details it's hard to say. Swap enabled? Change swappiness or disable it. Compcache enabled? Try disabling. Fancy animations enabled? Try disabling. Try wiping, etc, etc, etc. Just saying that your phone is slow says absolutely nothing without details.

How to,
this one is a little more complicated than before but it due to moving to the new file system.
1. You need to have the New OR put together by Mz and Fj, just copy to root of SD card.

2. If you have ext2 or 3 just format to ext4 with OR SD utilities.
If you already have EXT4 made with OR you are fine, but if formatted from gparted or something else it wont work!
You need format back to ext2 with you fav util and see step 2.

Ok, downloading now..!
I'm very happy with CM6 but hey, I can't resist flashing a new ROM..
Question: So if i don't have EXT4, no issues? Will app2extr still work with my EXT3 partition? Thanks again!
Wow dude, i don't know what to say, I'm literally like a kid at christmas! LMAO! Thanks a lot Hellmonger Been eagerly waiting but know you been workin hard on this Beaut! Awesome work man and thanks for your help Mz you been performing miracles lately! Nice work on ext4 bud! and everyone else. Thanks Peshovic and fjfalcon as well. Trying now!
Know I'm a nub here and all, but I've got an rooted, SIM-Unlocked Cincy Bell XT720. I'll pitch this ROM on (tried out Dexter's 2.2 already) and let you guys know how it works on WIND Mobile (Canada). O-^
Well...I installed it. Went over smoothly, things appeared fine at a first glance. But, I'm still failing to be able to connect to Wind Home (3G - non roaming). The phone's completely SIM-unlocked, sees both WIND Away (Rogers - 2G) and WIND Home, but I'll either get a "Your SIM Card does not allow a connection to this network" problem, or the network just fails to connect outright. I think it may be a problem with the radio or some other form of configuration with this thing...something stupid I'm not finding. Can anyone help me out here? :/

wow, I wonder how you were able to post in development right away with your very first post? Anyway make sure you have background data turned on first then try apn manager maybe.

Not sure how to mount ext4 it's saying this ROM may not support it?

I'm not sure about how I ended up being able to post here...probably because my account's been around since December '09, I perhaps have some "seniority" factor or something along those lines that defies the post limit. No idea...
Anyways, I can pin it down precisely to a "Your SIM does not allow a connection to this network" error. I've got my APNs configured perfectly and set up, and have all of my data settings on. When I go to manually select a network, WIND Home consistently becomes available. I'll select it though, and I get a "Selected network (WIND Home) unavailable" notification, followed by the SIM error 1-2 minutes later. I can connect to WIND Away with great signal strength, and even pull 3G roaming...I've tried everything in here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974375) including SMSC config and locking the band to WCDMA through the hidden phone menu for detecting WIND Home only.
I hate being a noob here, tromping on this guy's latest release with this problem. I'd just make a separate thread on the matter and get help that way, but it seems a bit excessive to start two discussions on the same topic. Sorry, and thanks in advance for all the help.

Well for starters, I am connected with 3g plus wifi so no probs there for me. Everything is freakin awesome so far! Love the Mean Green Glad to have it back! Nice pic for wallpaper! speed is perfect for me, don't need that Super crazy over the top speed lol.
(EDIT-actually after overclocking to 1000 it is super crazy fast!)
Not sure where your prob is yet first I heard of that issue. Did you start with Singapore SBF? Maybe just wait for someone else to reply since I'm not familiar with that issue bud.
***My only issue so far is can't mount my ext4. I repartitioned and flashed Singapore sbf. Restored all my apps and have about 20mb left it's saying ROM may not support ext4.

Alright, thanks...I'm dead sure this is a Cincy Bell (saw the links for Cincy Bell website sites with the Moto portal tool when I first got it), but I'll just ask in the General section and leave this thread in peace. Again though, at least I can vouch for the fact that installing this ROM and fiddling around with it didn't screw it up in any way...one more bit of peace of mind for prospective flashers.
Thanks a lot !!!!!
But does an ext3 partition will work ???? Do you have to make an ext4 part? (to make you have to follow the same order than before with the ext3???) Can you move your apps from ext3 to ext4????
Someone have the ext4 working?

Maybe I will try convert-ext4 -Converts an EXT3 partition to an EXT4 partition.
I have my old sdcard with ext3 still.
Also I tried boot.img, boot2.img and boot5.img, it appears boot.img is the one for now?...

No, trying! lol. I am trying ext3 now. I know it's probably something easy to fix. But I have tried all I know with ext4 and apps wouldn't move over...
I got ext3 to work, need to check my apps then try to change to ext4 i guess...

The Xenon Kernel is a project for myself to learn more about Linux and Android Kernel developing. I am a sophmore in High School and I haven't had much developing experience, so this is a learning experience. If you want to use this Kernel, you can show your support by thanking me! Right now all I need is words of encouragement and a new phone (I still have an old Symbian S60v3 phone haha). The Touchpad is my first Android device. Also, this is my second work for the Touchpad, my first is the SUPREME Modpack. I hope to make this my primary development project and improve as much as I can. Thanks for checking this out!
Download:
http://goo.im/devs/rohan/tenderloin/XENON
There are 2 versions, one that retains the CM9 kernel as a backup, and one that deletes the CM9 kernel and only uses Xenon.
Saves CM9: xenon-kernel-v1.1-tenderloin-rohan-WITHCM9.zip
Deletes CM9: xenon-kernel-v1.1-tenderloin-rohan-WITHOUTCM9.zip
Current version is v1.1

Instructions:
How to Install:
FIRST, MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP! This can cause serious harm to your system. I am not responsible for anything that may occur to your Touchpad, but everything should be fine.
1. Download the respective installer zip from the above link.
2. Install the zip in ClockWorkMod.
3. Wipe your dalvik-cache
4. Reboot and hope for the best!
IF YOU ARE HAVING SOD ISSUES try setting your CPU Governor to "ondemand"
How to Uninstall:
1. Restore from your backup you were supposed to make
or... if you didn't listen (shame on you... you should always make a backup)
1. Download the XENON Uninstaller from my goo-inside.me profile. This zip deletes the Xenon Kernel and adds back the default CyanogenMod 9 Kernel. It will not, however, delete the ath6kl WiFi drivers (you really don't need to unless you are having WiFi woes). To uninstall the ath6kl drivers you need to reinstall Android.
2. Install it in ClockWorkMod.
3. Wipe your dalvik-cache
4. Reboot!

Changelog:
4/03: Version 1.1
Code:
*Removed the support for the following partitions:
-Amiga Partitions
-Atari Partitions
*Bumped CPU Minimum up to 384mhz to combat against SOD issues
*Battery drain should now be significantly lower than before
Thanks for sharing! Will give this go and provide feedback.
Very cool, I love kernel options! You rock. Now I'm jealous that you have time to develop on a kernel. Been wanting to try that side of the house, just no time.
Sent from my android touchpad.
Don't have the time now, but I will try it and get back to you.
Thank you so much for working on this! Always glad to see more Touchpad love.
works good for me,but the new wifi driver is sucks, got authentication problem ,and then disconnect every one minute, but thanks and good luck

Hmmm, I had issues with the nightly build WiFi. Using this kernel fixed that. I haven't been disconnected at all. It did seem to want to connect to my neighbor's WiFi at one point. I've never connected to it before or saved the settings, but during the ICS setup, it kept repeating "Obtaining IP address" until I tapped it and hit Forget, then connected to mine. Everything has been fine since then.
Will this affect the supreme mod script in any way? I have the latest mod pack for the 4.0.4 build for official nightly. Will I need to reflash and run terminal again for mod pack after flashing this kernel?
Thanks

Nope, it will not affect that at all. So no need to worry about reflashing.
And just a side note, for those of you experiencing sleep of deaths, try setting your CPU minimum to 384mhz using a CPU control app. I will make this the default minimum in the next release.

That's definitely high on the new features list. I hope to have another release out soon with bug fixes and probably this if I can figure out how to do it.
This is really nice but I'm wondering what all of this filesystem support will do? Don't get me wrong, any work on the TP is good work, I'm just wondering the utility of having "Amiga Partition Support" when the Amiga is 20-30 years old haha?

I dont know I decided to just throw it in there haha. I'll probably remove support for some of them that are crazy.
Are any of you guys having any bugs? For myself personally I'm actually getting a lot of SODs and battery drain. Are you guys experiencing the same thing or is it just my funky Touchpad?
Not really any out of the ordinary battery drain with new kernel vs stock. I has noticed using a screen off profile and setting it to power save with 384 or 432 values that the TP has issues waking back up. So I just use interactive at 384 min and that works just fine.
Edit: I have no screen off profiles enabled. Interactive is set as main.
New release v1.1 with bug fixes now! Just download and install the new CWM file.

Doesn't work on my TP
Followed instructions from OP.
After reboot, my TP showed "XEON" as one of the boot option. I selected that. My TP displays "Wrong file size" and did not boot.
Not sure what happened.

What other kernels do you have installed?
Even setting 384 as minimum I still receive SOD with 1.0. I'll try 1.1 and see if things improve.

I was getting SODs on 1.0 and the SODs were everywhere. 1.1 fixed this for me.
