Mediaprovidor.apk gets really hot and turtles phone - Droid X General

So i have been running .595 for some time now, but over the past week ive noticed that a lot of times, my phone will get REALLY hot, and really slow. also booting, once its loaded its fine for about a minute, then it just gets SUPER SLOW, taking another 15 minutes or so before it finally starts working again, then its fine...
looking at the battery usage, the 2nd most draining program is android.process.media, 2nd to the display.
ok, so I renamed mediaprovider.apk to .bak, and rebooted.
now its really fast, boots great, runs fine. However, the damn thing has no ringtones!
Anyone want to give me an idea of how to solve this? obviously theres a problem with the mediaprovider.apk but i cant remove it. Could i drop in a Froyo version or version from another build?
thanks

First Froyo boot

So, I've just updated to Froyo using Kies. It all seemed to go well but when the phone has rebooted it is now stuck with the "S" doing its little animation - probably been stuck for around 5 mins.
Should I just leave this for longer or should I try to pull battery and reboot?
Any help is much appreciated.
Well, answering my own question but it's probably good as a reference for others.
I left it a little longer and it has now booted, still acting slow but this is to probably be expected so if you're in a similar situation then just leave it for a while and it should eventually boot OK.
now that it has booted up, i would do a proper shut down and restart. make sure everything is connecting the way it should.
Thanks, have done and seems to be much better than 2.1 apart from slight lag when scrolling through touchwhiz but general performance is great.

[Q] Phone very slow, hang, unresponsive

Sometimes my phone will get very unresponsive such that any action takes many seconds to show up, and everything is very choppy. Often I see this when I wake up in the morning, but it happens often enough in general. It's so bad that I can't shut it down normally because it would take over 10 min (I've actually never waited to see exactly how long it would take). Thankfully I just found out about the three finger reset (volume up, camera, power), so I shouldn't have to pull the battery anymore, but it's still a problem.
I don't remember this happening before using custom roms. It happens with both DK28 roms I've tried - Bonsai and Viper. I believe it also occurred on the 2.1 Epic Experience, although I'm not sure. I guess I should try flashing to DK28 stock to see if that works, but it's a pain to set up everything each time. I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone else has had this problem and found a way to fix it. Also, I have a feeling this could be related to WiFi being turned on, but can't confirm yet.
My phone was stuttering yesterday.
But that was only after installing smartbench and using theonscreen keyboard.
However, since I've upgraded to dk28, the phone does take (relatively) forever to shutdown.
It'll go black but the bottom lights would still be on and then like a minute or two later it vibrates and actually cuts off

When my phone does this, it reminds me that I like to have SeePU installed. It's pretty useful in pointing out the apps that are hogging CPU and most likely slowing down your phone.
For me it's often Touchdown, and I kill it and things are back to normal.
I have found a few things that are useful. When I need to reboot my phone I use quick boot from the market. Works every time. In between I use fast reboot also from the market. Try them and see how they work.

Thanks for the app suggestions. I like the taskbar icons for SeePU. It's always been useful on my Mac (stats from iStat). Quick Boot makes things easier as well.
Next time my phone hangs, I'll see if some process is taking 100% CPU.
The phone hung again, and it seemed like something was taking 100% CPU, if the taskbar SeePU icon is to be trusted. I wasn't able to figure out what the culprit was though, because the phone pretty much stopped responding. Otherwise I would have loaded Android System Info to check.
can the epic 4g run this lag fix? if not, do we have any other ways to fix the lag?

edit: nvm
So I was able to view Android System Info while my phone was hanging, but it did now show any processes taking 100% CPU, although the total CPU usage was 100%. My guess then is that the Android 2.2 OS is buggy.
However, I did find people who said leaving USB debugging on would fix it, so I'm going to try that.
For reference:

My phone hasn't hung for a while, so apparently enabling USB debugging prevents the hang / lag / crash / 100% CPU. Weird but I'm glad it works
Now the only problem is kswapd0 eating CPU sometimes. I think this is caused by lack of memory, but I'm not sure what I can do about it.

Problem with AndroidOS going nutz

Hello,
My droid pro is about a month old now. It gets great battery life most of the time but occasionally i'll hear the dreaded battery sound and when i grab it it's very hot and usually locked up.
Today it happened but i got to it before it locked up and checked the battery stats. It said the AndroidOS is had been running for 2 hours and 30 munites and downloaded a lot of dataand it was really hot to the touch.
I rebooted the device and it's fine again but this is happening about once a week.
The phone is not rooted in any way and has the latest motorola update on it.
Any ideas? I don't even know what all runs as AndroidOS
Thanks
It may not be the case for you, but I've noticed that bad Flash banners on certain webpages will do this (same on a desktop, obviously). I had to ctrl-alt-del my Droid Pro to get it to stop running...

[Q] Screen response

Hi All,
I have got my Ideos X5 for about 2,5 weeks now and at first everything was fine. I had a battery life of about 2 full days, made it 3 days once! The response was quick and everthing was as I wanted it.
The last week however when i scroll in my menu, it's not fluent anymore, switching from screens (left and right) is not fluent anymore and i am unable to remove widgets from my homescreen. This is because when i press the widget (if you do it long enough you should be able to place it in the garbage can) it only holds it a for a fraction and then it drops it again, or it simply loads the program. Angry birds simply crashes after like 5-10 games for another example. When i do a quadrant test at that moment, it scores like 1000.
Now the strange thing is: this is not all the time. Sometimes it has these problems, sometimes it works fluently, no problems, no crashes, quadrant of 1400.
I tried to find out if it was a particular application that was running that caused it, but i ended every application that i've downloaded so far and it still occurs.
Anyone have any idea what it could be and how to solve the problem?
Tnx!
What Rom are you running?
I use the stock os.
build number: V100R001c00b135sp01
custom version: Custdeuc253d001
so i guess B135?
Hi all, quick update. I think i might have found the answer to my problems.... I downloaded this battery app earlier and i removed it now. This night cost 0% battery (earlier it sometimes cost 30%) and angry birds didn't crash even though i played for like an hour and alle screens work fluently again. Lets hope it stays that way! (otherwise i'll be back )

Every battery saving app is oNLY for stupid people who don't know what is their phone and how to lower brighness or disable GPS. Apps CAN NOT make any difference in battery life, only shorting it. Cause it's again only just one more app running in background and using phone resources - and it's from battery.

I seem to have fixed my Gingerstreak 2.4.4 by moving all apps to phone!

As a first time phone rooter, I read for several days on end through this and other forums, acquiring the knowledge to hack my streak. I was finally ready and successfully put Gingerstreak 2.4.4 on my Dell Streak 5 from stock Rogers/Canada following all the recommended procedures. Yahoo!
Used options in install file:
stageui
us160
It seemed to be fine at first, but got progressively worse. i.e., rebooting, freezing, choppy, sleep of death and huge battery drain issues. (the common problems) Then after a few days it was pretty much totally unreliable. I tried Green Power and a task killer app to no great avail. So I decided to put a more stable version on the phone. I had planned on putting the [ROM] [INTL] [WIP] DSC v0.62b on the phone and began to follow the great instructions in that post.
At some point I read it was required/recommended to move all my apps to the phone so I could keep them. I went ahead and did that and right away my phone stopped lagging. I waited a half day longer and no more rebooting issues. The battery would be at 60% or better by 5pm as opposed to almost dead. It's been 3 days now and it runs pretty darn snappy, solid and reliable. I do get a 4-5 minute SOD (sleep of death) after (some) disconnections from charging cable, but that seems to be it. I will now begin moving the apps back to the SD card (one or two a day) to see how it affects the operation of the unit.
Just thought someone would like to know...
Solved 99% of the WAIT/FC popups and 5-10 second freezes for me as well. I'm still on SimpleStreak 1.2 with PerfUpdate. Thanks brainsquishy!
Your welcome krazman325.
By the way...I put about 6 of my apps back onto the SD card to see what happened. It immediately began to act up again. Moved them back and I'm OK. I guess until someone has a fix for that, all my apps will have to stay off the SD card until I move to the DSC release.
Regards...
Awesome idea!
Fixed most of my issues (phone was freezing whenever I tried to install apps, but only a quick reboot to the boot image screen).
Thanks much!
I was hoping this would help, but even with half uninstalled and the other half moved to phone, I'm still getting freezes, restarts and now today (after working with no problems for about 24 hours, it's got into reboot cycle and won't recover).
I'm going to have to try another ROM as this clearly isn't working for my Streak.
Who'd think they could be so different?!
So which ROM is next best then?
