I recently bought a xoom, the system is already 3.1, but when I inserted the 16GB SD card to the Xoom, it does not recognize. I can not find SD card files on my Xoom, why?

I think you need to do some reading about your tablet here before you do anything beyond checking your email and playing some Angry Birds....but lets cut to the chase, shall we?
For the SD card to work you are going to need to UNLOCK, ROOT and install a custom KERNEL on your Xoom. The Sd card will not work right out of the box, not even in 3.1.
Now search in this forum for the three words in bold, you should find more than enough information to set you right.
Just remember that if you Unlock you loose everything on the xoom. I wipes the internal storage.
I think by the time MOTO gives us the needed update for the SD card to work, a 32GB card will cost $1.32 and we will all be in a nursing home!

Don't know what you are complaining about. This is a unique feature that only the Motorola XOOM has. It's an SD card holder, built directly into your XOOM, that allows you to carry one extra SD card along with you for use in your ACER Iconia tablet.

So I cut the edges off my SD card to make it mini, and then i kind of shoved it into the micro HDMI output. Why am I not getting video output on my SD card?
(Before you say it, I know ALL about rooting. I rooted for my xoom (rah rah rah! goooooo xoom!) and then unlocked the front door, so I think I'm totally jailbroken now).

SD card support hinges on Google. Honeycomb doesn't support external storage yet. This is a Google issue, not a Motorola issue.
That is what I have heard...
And you don't think Google and Motorola have discussed this? Come on now, someone knows the answer. My concern is Honeycomb starts to support SD, then the Xoom does not (I do not care why), we are left with a lame duck holding our junk and crying about an 800$ loss.
I'm sure that Toshiba would also be pretty upset if Google decides not to support external storage. They're including an SD card slot in their tablet as well. I'm not sure about all of the others, but there are two manufacturers counting on SD card support.

Well, then don't be concerned: there's absolutely no reason why Honeycomb would support SD and the Xoom wouldn't. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
The Xoom is being treated as a google expeirance device which puts in the same league of updates as the G1, the Nexus 1, the OG Droid, and the Nexus S. It will get it so stop worrying. This is also the reason for the unlocked boot loader. Now as for when thats a whole other story but the more devices that ship with Honeycomb the better because that will put pressure on google to get the update out.
this might be odd, but what the heck makes it so hard to have SD support in the first place, you would think that this would be one the main functions of the software. I mean, its not like SD cards are new, and not like a million other devices that are running android (not 3.0 but older versions) have SD support. i mean, this confuses me in the first place.

I think the problem isn't that honeycomb doesn't support sdcards so much a it doesn't support two. The internal memory is being seen as an sdcard.

I'm not sure about the Captivate, but on the Xoom the /data and /sdcard mount points both point to the same logical partition on the internal storage. In most phones, /data has its own partition on the internal storage, and /sdcard is mounted from your sd card slot.
well.. not to argue the point, witch is completely valid, I still do not understand why that was not something that could have been added at the get go.
it just seems simple, as it would require a driver, an just a point in the script to mount it.
Flash, I can see why the issue, new hardware and stuff.
anyways, cant wait to get some SD action, would love to toss some movies on this thing!. (err.. more movies)

Yeah, I'm almost 100% sure they pulled that out of their ass, and was confusing the LTE SIM card slot (which is usuaily ultimately attached to a serial port, no special hardware required) with the SD Card slot.
They were probably just hoping it would all get worked out around the same time as the 4G updates.
This is on the Wifi Model listing:
Memory expansion via microSD card slot with support for optional cards up to 32 GB (functionality requires future software upgrade)

Do you really think Google created a brand new Android OS that should be around for years to come that will not support SD cards? And on top of that, do you think Motorola working with Google would put an SD slot in the xoom and never activate it?
Really, come on...
Source is available, if for some dumb reason Google doesn't want to support an SD card, motorola can do it themselves.
Is source available?

How many evo owners [myself not included] own a Thrive Tablet? It plays nicely with my Evo, and hopefuly if there is enough support, hopefully we can get a subforum for it here on XDA along with getting it rooted. Really? Havent heard that one yet but i really think i might settle for the 16gb xoom.
I REALLY LIKE THE THRIVE> chose it over the galaxy tab 10.1 cuz of the orts. It has the following FULL standard sized ports: HDMI, sd card [use adapter if using micro sd], and a USB port. standard 3mm headphone jack. Not going to lie, I have only had the sleep bug once, and had to hard reset it [hold power button]. But I love it. Its not that heavy [only @.3lbs heavier than galaxy tab], though a bit thicker [due tot he full ports] I really like the toshiba file manager, where you can see the internal, sd card, and usb memory all at once, the just tap between them to copy/move files. Also the removeable baery and cover also make it worth while.

Good look. Also, I'm on my thrive right now. I personally got the 32gb version. Only cuz I want the max storage availble. The hardware is the same across all version, so its not like the 32 has something over the 16, and it over the 8. So you could get the 8gb, get a 32gb sd card, then have 40gb of space...or use an external hard drve either way...its win-win-win.

Good call! Thanks for sharing. It would've been pretty crappy to find this out the hard way.
The Xoom uses the SDHC standard and will never support SDXC. No, a firmware update will not change this fact.
Well, we always have the USB OTG cable option if we use up both the internal and external 32GB memory. The price of the card is just to high now anyway.

I sent an email asking for pictures with a recent newspaper or blank piece of paper with the word "banana" written on it. We shall what this guy is trying to sell, if he responds of course!
These have been on eBay too. While I don't doubt the possibility of soldering memory to the USB bus internally, I highly doubt that a seller would be doing this without it being posted somewhere, on some forum, to completion.
The eBay sells turn out to be OTG packages. Its likely this will too.

I remember seeing this back when I had the HD7. Thought it was interesting. So why not buy an 8GB and rip it open and replace the mem chip>?
I know you will have to be a man with an iron heart and nerves of steel to crack it open.
But I am sure someone will! May be...
Well i don't think that the nexus uses a SD card i think it uses something called Nand chip but i am not sure
I didn't know it was truly an SD chip in there. Even class 10 SD memory isn't all that fast.
If it does actually use a micro sd card, and it's actually accessible, that would be revolutionary news! No one would need the 16GB version

Some manufacturer should make a case with a micro-usb to sd-card integrated on it.
I'm quite sure the device is using nand flash memory chip, would make no sense to include an internal SD Card.
If you look at this the user manual on the FCC website, there's a section about using a memory card. It's located at page 32 if you use Acrobat and page 33 of the guide. And page 33 or 34, it says "NOTE: The LG-E960 supports memory cards up to 64 GB."
