Hi
is there a pre applied screen protector on the xperia play? Isit removable ?
Because i m lookin at used one right now in my hand and it has small scratch. But i almost see a screen protector too. Bu i coud be wrong
Yes its there, ALL Xperia phones since x10 have it. It scratches very easily but will prevent the glass from cracking from a fall.
I ripped mine off as soon as I got in my car. Screen feels so smooth and so much nicer with it off, not all plastic and junky.
With my x10 I ripped it off the day I bought it, and it never ever got a scratch.
I bet the screen is perfect I say take a chance and buy it!

I just lifted a corner with a needle very very carefully to the point where I could grip in and start pulling straight down and away from the phone. It will be tough but just keep going and it should just peel right off.

Some Xperia Play's come with an 8gb sd card, some come with 16gb.
I believe the 8gb ones do not have the screen protector fitted, and the 16 gb ones do.
Mine came with 16 gb and a screen protector fitted. Maybe someone with an 8gb version could clarify that they didn't get one fitted?
Factory fitted screen protectors rock. No air bubbles, no dust, just a pure crisp clean fit.
I would advise leaving it on. You will never get it as good as they can.

i cant figure it out. its an 8gb xperia. which is fine and enough for me. but i cant tell if thats a screen protector or the screen looks like it has a screen protector. i am almost positive it has a screen protector but i couldnt take out with my nails. usually i am able to with any screen protector i apply . but this one i cant even move it.
so either that its super hard to get out. or there is no screen protector but the screen it self has some sort of a layer that looks like a screen protector

A) Yes the 8gb devices have the film...its not a screen protector its a FILM or a "shatter proof sheet". Read anything about it being scratch resistant? NO
B) It does NOT rock it makes the device feel cheap, and it does NOT protect against scratches, it picks many more up.
C) Its nice you would leave it on, but for the rest of us that dont want our device cheapened by that plastic JUNK on our screens, we will remove it. Thanks.
Its a STANDARD that SE apply to ALL their phones from the Xperia x10 up. Every device I have seen from SE (here in Ontario, Canada) has had one...they are annoying and I wish SE would stop using them.

^There is your answer...thats exactly what it is. Its hard to get started to remove it, and it looks like a screen protector but its not.
Yeah the Arc has it too, it's driving people crazy. Officially it's listed as "Shatter proof sheet on scratch-resistant mineral glass".
People have reported success removing it carefully with an x-acto blade as well.
I left mine on and put another thin protector on top immediately after buying it, but I am a total klutz with my phones sometimes so I probably need the extra shatter-proof power
I need more people to confirm it is removable, maybe a video.?

I would have to be a pretty twisted horrible human being to WANT people to wreck their phones, I can promise that its A) Removable and B) Its better to do so.

I have been here for awhile, I'm no troll man. I will tell you what, when I get my Play I will record the whole process and throw it up on my youtube "gunstar1981" search me, I have a bunch of PS3 and 360 repair videos and stuff if you want, along with a Captivate review.

No problem man.
Atleast with it off you have hardened Mineral Glass. I know other harder minerals like sand and such can scratch the screen but at that point keys should not. It has to be a mineral harder than the Glass to scratch it. With that stupid layer, anything seems to scratch it, even your finger nail could : /
I think I am going with the play though, I love the old school games. I just hope that the Rogers one comes with the pouch because I want to remove the film and NOT use a screen protector.

I ask this because some italian users have note this after 3-4 days. They say that there are some chromate points on their hd.
Thank you.
Bounced Paint on the Frame
Hey guys,
I read something about scratches and damaged paint on the metal-frame around the HD.
What do you know about that? Anybody here who has this problem?
[WARNING] they chip easily
So I've had my HD about a week now. I'll be the first to admit I've not used any pouch or protector but i've never needed to with any of my other phones.
I've been treating it with care, ie only thing in my pocket, not putting it in my bag or my car etc.
Just given the unit a quick once over and can see chips in the gloss black on the front in 3-4 places already.
Just thought I'd share. I don't mind my phones looking 'used' but if you like your phones to be flawless you're in for a challenge with the (assumed) cheap gloss coating.
stuff like this really gets my goat. you pay top dollar for a product and there shouldnt be issues like this.

The materials that they use are not good enough. Even iPhone, which is considered to have the best material using very strong glass from Russia, can be scratch. That's why even iPhone needs protection from scratch, although their paint do not seem to chip off.
Using the materials that they use for iPhone, I assume, would be more costly.

No, but the plastic on the backs of the iPhone 3Gs get stress fractures without any drops or pressure on them.
I don't ever use a screen protector. I treat my screen like I do a high dollar pair of sunglasses. only use microfiber clothes on it and I always use a belt case holder. I recently bought a Golla side pouch and like it a lot on how it protects it from all angles.

me too, Ive had mine for 2 weeks though BUT don't have any chips, just one tiny scratch above the front speaker which I'm sure was me being drunk/careless ...
Good to hear that it is holding out good so far. However, I personally would still put on the protective shield, more as a precaution.
Can't hurt, can it?
If you use the stylus at all, I'd always use a screen protector. It's too easy to just one day trap a sharp particle between the stylus tip and the screen as you go to handwrite, and then scratch it up badly before you realise.

Well obviously glass can scratch and he's not suggesting his screen shouldnt scratch if its mistreated, theres a few ppl talking about the black area paint chipping, very reminiscent of the P3600i
HTC need to learn you cant promote a phone like this as a stylish new device and skimp out on essentials like this. My iphone 2G is a prime example of craftsmanship, I dont know how many times the back of it should be scratched and battered by now but it still looks damn good and quality.

hi all,
i just acquired an hd2(yey!) and im just wondering if the screen is scratch proof. it did not come with any screen protector and we dont have it available yet in our country. so im a little jumpy regarding the screen. so is it scratch proof/resistant? can i not put any screen protector on it?
thanks!
Isn't it glass like the iPhone? Nothing short of metal keys will scratch the screen I believe. I don't bother using a screen protector on my ipod touch and there's no scratches but my friend's keys scratched his to hell and back.
true that it is glass. im just tad worried in wiping the screen with a cloth or something. i have an ipod touch with a screen protector. really it does not get scratched? i keep my phones and itouch AWAY from anything metal.
thanks!
You may cry or feel sick to your stomach:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcEaehKWr2s
My perspective:
It's a touch screen. It is designed to be touched with fingertips. Nothing sharper than your finger should ever need to contact it.
1) Buy a micro-fiber cloth to clean it and 2) always carry the HD2 in the very nice included leather case when not in use.
Wipe it down with the micro-fiber cloth when necessary to remove smudges, and with just a little very basic care, scratches should not be an issue.
I wouldn't take it to the beach and body surf on it, but it is pretty resistant to scratches, in my experience. I highly doubt you'll ever get a scratch if you follow simple common sense principles of use like the one's I described above.
What Donalgodon said. Keep it away from keys and don't mistake your cleaning cloth with sand paper and you'll be golden.
so is it scratch proof? my package did not have any screen protector. i asked htc and they dont know. i have to call them back after 2 hrs... tsk tsk

Nothing is totally scratch proof, but in all honesty and sincerity, I do not think any reasonable person who exercises any level of due diligence in using their HD2 needs a screen protector, or any other kind of super deluxe, super shell kryptonite diamond laser embossed anal-retentive vault to carry it around in.
It's a tool. Use it. If you are too worried about it, then you should find something you can live with (or without) if something happened to it.
I don't mean that to sound flippant, I am just trying to inject a little perspective, because it is easy to get carried away thinking that it needs to be treated like a Faberge egg.
It's scratch resistant. Under normal operating use, you shouldn't be able to scratch it really. I doubt anything is "scratch proof".
thanks for the reply everyone. im just so excited in playng with the pone due to its screen but i am very hesitant in doing so. ive had a number of htc devices and all came with screen protector. this is the first one i got so im quite hesitant touching and wiping the screen.
leather case rocks!
I totally sympathize with you. I made the mistake of not putting a screen protector on a Touch Pro and I have always regretted it. But that screen was made from flismy plastic, this one is glass.

due care should be there but functionality should be maximized. its a good thing that it is scratch resistant.
See the Vikuiti range of screen protectors for the HD2 - best on the market imho.

Whilst some argue it doeesnt need it or why bother if you are that padentic over it, at the end of the day they are a few $ on ebay so why on earth wouldnt you put one on. its so easy to do and does offer more protection so for such a cheap price delivered straigth to your door, i dont see you would want to think about it.
Just be warned some are not as good quality as others and can look ugly as it doesnt stick properly. Ive got one on from Ebay, you wouldnt even know its there.
So I'm trying hard to keep my phone from getting even one scratch until my cases come in, which should be any day now.....
....then today I freakin' drop it on the concrete by accident.
I feel like $#!t ...my heart sank.... damn it!!!
BUT, on the bright side I am very surprised on how well it took the hit. The phone dropped and actually rolled a couple of times, yet it only marked up the plastic/metal looking trim that goes around the phone.
By any chance do you think the rim piece would be available later for a replacement part? Gosh I sure hope so. I'm desperate to go rip off the trim at the T-Mobile store
...I keep telling myself....it could have been worse right?
Bottom line: For how hard it hit the concrete, I'm impressed...since it was dark I was thinking it was going to be way worse, until I held it to the light to see the damage. Thank goodness for not a cracked screen....
BTW: I have the 3M screen protector. If it wasn't for that it would have for sure had some mean scratches on the screen....sigh..
Ouch.. I did the same with my new Touch Pro (current phone) and it also ended up with some dings on the sides, but that phone's partially metal with a plastic screen.
Since one of the frequent criticisms of this series of phones is the build quality, glad it looks like the Vibrant's made pretty well after all if it can survive that with only cosmetic damage.
you should put a warning in the title, those pics are way to graphic.

A gel skin would cover those up nicely. I decided to get one in the first place because even though I love the feeling of this phone without the skin on, I hate scratches/dents a lot more.
I had a bad track record with my G1 too... dropped it like 4 times
You should link me to where you bought your screen protector. I got Tmobile generic ones, but they suck, so I bought one from eBay. What I've got was this super thick, weird feeling protector, leaves too many bubbles, sucked. Bought another one, which is identical to ones you buy at the store, works good, but doesn't cover the bottom part of the phone.

The best one IMO is the one from clearfreak, which is the one I have. Just make sure when applying it, to follow their directions. You have to spray it with water, wet your fingers and squeegee the water out with the little tool it comes with.
It's made out of 3M and you can't even tell it's on. All the other screen protectors like the generic ones really mess up the touch response. It's not as responsive from what I've noticed. Stay away from chEapBAY if you know what I mean...those are all pieces of junk from china, hence 5x protectors for $0.99US

Very interesting you asked that because I was curious at first as well. However, I must say that once I did put it on, it didn't alter the quality at all.
As for it being sticky, I assume you mean on the surface when you glide your fingers across it right? Well...it depends if your hands are dry or not....it really doesn't bother me and I think it works fine...the only time it may be a little resistant is when your hands are sweaty. I think that would go for most all screen protectors though...

Not sure if you can, I yanked mine off so fast, it was like I was 5 again again on Xmass morning. I have never used screen protectors on anything and frankly I have never got a scratch, I think they are huge ripoffs. The screen on the Xoom is very tough gorilla glass.
I WOULD recommend the Motorola case that snaps around it, some people complain that you can't charge it with it closed, but that is very minor. Otherwise it's a good case. You will want a case not only to protect against droppage but to protect the screen and make it overall less slippery when you carry it (often under your arm). It also kind of Hides it, so to most people it just looks like a little black notepad, which keeps a lot of people from asking what it is.

you can use it. I kept mine on for a while yesterday until I was ready to install my screen protector. Only downside is it feels real gritty but it works fine

Thanks, my main concern are the "fingerprints", the XOOM screen is like a "fingerprint magnet"

That is the reason I bought InvisibleShield, the same reason I got it for my phone. It helps to reduce glare and fingerprints.
I kept all the plastic on mine for about five days until my skinomi came. I didn't want a single scratch on my baby while i waited for the full carbon fiber/ screen protector to arrive! Worked fine with plastic. Edges started to peel back after a couple days, that's it.
I've had mine on since day one. Figure when it starts to come off I'll just take it off and do without. Not worried about scratches, just seemed like it'd allow me to be lazy about cleaning for a while if I kept it on over the screen.

It won't act as a screen protect as much as a figure protector lol.
I left mine on for two days till I got a real screen protector, it will work for smudges but ID be a little careful about scratches. It's a good idea though so you don't have to clean the screen before you put the real protector on

Does XDA allow/support this type of behavior?

Having a perfectly clean screen to apply my screen protector was one of the biggest perks! I didn't have to worry about dirt or finger prints getting stuck under the protector!

A bit rude perhaps but that's hardly trolling. I don't understand anyone in this thread either. I like to enjoy my electronics free of plastic head on right when I get them

I'm sure you know most techies (and clumsy people?) like keeping their gadgets as perfect as they can. If that means covering it in damage-resistant plastic, then why not? I've never been one for screen protectors... but I definitely see the point. Full body protectors also seem very useful. You can bump into things, drop your device on the ground, put it in bags full of other stuff, throw it around (not horribly, of course) and still not have to worry about damage.
Its much better than letting that one little scratch you tried so hard to avoid get on your device. Unless you just don't care. However, after paying 100+ dollars I would surely care. Can't have expensive things that look like trash.
My original plastic is still on the face, after 5 days of use I finally took the other plastic off.
I'm having a real hard time deciding whether to put a screen protector on this thing or not. For the first time in a decade of using the stupid things I think I'm going to try going without one. I'll be heartbroken if I end up with a gash though. This is my first Gorilla Glass product so it's a foreign concept to me.

gorilla glass scratscratches surprizingly easy! And I never used to care about screen orotectors and stuff until I started reselling my gadgets on eBay. I usually get my tech on sale and end up getting same as I paid for it back with a well preserved gadget and a good listing. Plan on doing the same with my 25% off xoom in a couple months or year when the next google experience tablet is released...

No offense to anyone. I know my ancestors were immigrants too!
It's actually a compliment. When you come to America with nothing, you tend to take really good care of your stuff
But yea, us 3rd, 4th, etc gen Americans just say f'-it whatever, let me enjoy my things!

Yep, same here but I guess I've developed a different kind of "analness" eg, instead of keeping the plastic on the leather couches, I clean and condition them every 3mos (with Lexol).
Instead of putting a screen protector on my Evo, it always flies solo in my pocket everywhere we go (keys & nicknacks go in the other) and slide it in with the screen facing my thigh
Not sure I can fit the Xoom in my pocket but it'll stay in the safety of the home most of its life.
http://www.ixobelle.com/2009/05/i-hate-everyone.html
that's a special post for people like the OP. I wrote it back in may of 2009.
I contemplated removing the factory screen protector for the last month as I hate how my fingers catch the edges, how the dust gathered along the edges as well as how it affects the fingerprint scanner. Well I removed it today and added the liquid screen protector (which with a little commen sense actually worked to protect my screen on my Note 10 Plus for almost a year from any scratches) and this phone is so much nicer. Your fingers glide across the screen and the finger print reader works so much better know then with the protector. The screen also just looks better...clearer, I'm not sure how to describe it but I sure love this phone even more now.
Liquid Glass, it's been around for years. Hydrophobic.
It's nanometers in thickness. Bonds on the molecular level.
It's also a real ***** to remove especially around the edges. Mineral spirits, lots of it and clean clothes. If you go to another system it may not need removal or it could cause adhesion failure.
I'm not very keen on it for this application for a variety of reasons.
Unfortunately the protection 1 coat provides is almost nonexistent. On cars you need minimum 3 coats, 5+ is better with Liquid Glass; it's formulated to be used like this.
5+ coats looks like a layer of clear coat, great for black cars.
The stuff you're using not so sure it can be "layered".
Don't count on this to save the screen from even sand; it's simply not thick enough. It will repel water and make cleaning easier, eventually it wears off of heavily used areas.
No added impact resistance.
Plastic urethane screen protectors don't feel as good but provide excellent scratch/marring protection and even some limited impact protection.

Where did you get your phone from because I really don't see a "factory" screen protector? I bought mine paid in full from Samsungs website but I really don't see a factory screen protector on it.
Mine was purchased directly from Samsung Canada and it had the factory screen on it...you can tell if you look at the front camera....you can see the circle around the camera.

I looked and quite closely too and I don't see anything around my camera hole.. At least nothing that resembles a screen protector cut-out.. I'm guessing some have them and some don't.
That is pretty strange, I cannot remember the last Samsung phone I have purchased that didn't have a factory installed screen protector.

Apparently this is the case; some do, some don't.
You can see a small bit of exposed screen all around the edge of the screen protector if it has one.
Lame of Samsung not to include this on some for at least temporarily protection.

That factory one is really pretty good.
Leave it on until it wears out. Have a one ready.
I found the wet apply ones are the easiest to put on perfectly. They last about 3-4 months maybe more, give good scratch protection and a little impact protection as well.
Yes I still have the factory one on it, thanks. I did purchase amfilm on Amazon for when factory one wears out. I was tempted to order the Whitestone dome but way too expensive.

That's really odd because both of mine did not. Are you sure you arent using the shipping cover that had the hole where the fingerprint reader is?

So yours didn't come with one. We are talking about two different things.
On one hand you have a factory installed edge to edge screen protector with a cut out for the camera.
On the other hand you have a shipping film added to keep the screen from getting scuffed when shifting around in the box.
I usually remove mine when it starts to get messed up. Then it's like getting a new phone!

i use my phone without any protector )
Don't remember if mine came with one or not. But definitely need one and a case as well because I HATE the accidental touches on my phone lol
Mine came from Samsung Canada with the preinstalled screen protector, but I was unhappy with the responsiveness of the fingerprint sensor, so I peeled it off. What a difference. The fingerprint sensor works instantly and the screen feels much smoother.
