Question about NFC on S2!!! - Galaxy S II General

Hi,
I wanted to know how this NFC chip works? I heard office access cards use NFC, so say if that is true, how do i replicate the access authorizations on the S2? Do I calibrate the access card with the S2 NFC chip??

Most office access cards do not use NFC, they'll use a different type of RFID. Depending on the company, hardware, and NFC chip, you may be able to use it for access, but I doubt it in most cases.
Regardless, the SGS2 in your hand does not have NFC capabilities unless you're in S. Korea.

Or in India !

Lucky you!
If you do have an NFC equipped SGS2, then try tapping it on your door access reader and see if the reader reacts. If it does, then it probably recorded the UID of the tag in your system. You'll just need your system admin to add that UID to your user account and voila, you're in.
If it doesn't react (I have little experience with the NXP chip in the phone), then you might be able to download an app from the market that will allow you to emulate a tag's UID. Note: After a quick look on the market, I haven't found such an app. One might come about later though, as the functionality to emulate tags was not added until 2.3.3 and most of the NFC apps on the market were created for reading only which came in 2.3. You might have luck contacting an existing NFC developer to add that functionality to their app.
If neither of those work, then your door access system uses a different frequency or protocol all together (the majority do) which means you won't be able to use your phone for access
Hope that helps

the indian version has also nfc onboard?
is this confirmed on the indian s2 site?

Yeah thanks for all the info !! I think I was expecting too much...I thought we would be able to calibrate the access card and the phone (so that it uses the same id that is already recorded by the admin department for access) and it would replace the card!! Anyways....will first have to check whether the card reader reacts to the chip or not first !!

Samsung confirmed it on their twitter account!! We shall only know tomorrow for sure though !

But if I'm not mistaken, India is getting the Tegra2 proc and SuperLCD screen.

Yeah....agree with u totally!!! We will believe when we see it (or maybe when the specs are officially released in the event today).

dudes, slcd+tegra is not i9100....its totaly different model i9103

And more so, there is no evidence of the i9103 to go anywhere. Its not in anyones inventory list that can prove that it will be made available to anyone YET... I say YET because its most likely that it will happen IF and when the stock gets low or shortage of parts.

Why does Samsung remove features?

Okay so i noticed that Samsung has removed a few features such as: automatic time (using internet to adjust time), webpage view (switching between Android and desktop view but it's okay because I can change it using "about:debug"), and the labs feature in the web browser. Will any of these be availabe in the upcoming touchwiz update?
Interestingly, all 3 of these options are (still?) available on the 4G/LTE version from Verizon. I wonder if it they haven't been removed yet from the VZ version, or if they may be coming back to the Wifi version (or if this will always be a difference between them)?
Yes it will.
TouchWiz is a revolution in tablet computing. The features and experience completely blow away any other honeycomb tablet out there. There is no doubt samsung tablets are going to be a huge success and TouchWiz is going to play a major role.
Time sync
I read a post where someone said that the time update is from the cell towers, not the internet- so maybe it makes sense that it works on the vzw version but not the wifi version? Someone else might have more knowledge in this realm and tell us for sure? Also in the post I read, someone asked if there was an app that might sync with the net, but no one replied...

Most Android devices can sync via NTP, which can sync over any data connection.
The LTE version does have the additional benefit of NITZ from the radio.
My guess on whether a OEM enables or disables OS features has to do with time to adequately test with their hardware. These non mainstream functions can be hidden and most wont miss them. They can then later enable via an update once they verify they function without breaking popular functions and apps.
I had the Asus Transformer which had all these functions enabled, including browser navigational thumb controls. But i noticed the keyboars lag and force closes / random kills to home screen compared to the Galaxy Tab. Now could be completely unrelated. But it does seem peculiar.

[Q] What makes TecTiles the only valid NFC option allowed

When I go and try to scan a non TecTile NFC chip, is obviously says "unsupported" so to me, this leads me to believe that other JFC tags could be supported, wouldn't it just be a matter of flipping some code to allow the ability to have it scan other NFC tags. Or am I completely wrong in this situation? I just don't see how that there is only one allowed NFC tag that is compatible with the S4.

It isn't. I'm using NFC ReTag https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.widgapp.NFC_ReTAG_FREE&hl=en and Tasker https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm and the combo works great.
I have a pack of Tec Tiles that I got for 50% off with my Samsung coupon when I got my S4, but I'm also using some really nice epoxy coated key ring NFC tags that work great http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNIVERSAL-NFC-Key-Chain-Hang-Tag-NTAG203-ANY-Android-by-AndyTags-NFC-Tags-/221262755251?pt=US_Other_Cell_Phone_Accessories&hash=item338449b5b3. Heck, it even works with any credit card that has the "blink" logo on the back.
Well, I got one of those free NFC Tags from the Movaluate give away that is programmable, and it works with my Nexus 7, but it fails with the GS 4.
Even if I open up NFC Task Launcher, to try and re-program it, I am unable to read it.
There are definitely some tags that don't work. I tried it with my NFC embedded name badge from a convention I attended last year and my S4 gave me a message that the tag was "unsupported". That's why I like the NFC ReTag app. It doesn't necessarily have to write the tasks to the tag. As long as the tag's ID number can be read, you can assign whatever action you want to the tag.
The S4 can not read or write to the first gen tags. You have to get the newer tags. The new broadcom controller in the S4 cannot read the old 1k mifare tags. Sucks because I have several left over from my Evo LTE.

Yep, the GS4 broadcom NFC chip doesn´t support mifare classic (=proprietary nxp format) tags, so no read or write operations...and samsung blocked (unlike the nexus 4 /10 with the same chip) even the low-level ID scan in some (all?) GS4 firmware versions ....not very nice, and ridiculous with the first gen Samsung TecTile tags being mifare classic tags ...
Sometimes I wonder, who made such decisions .... and it´s not only samsung, but the whole NFC industry and also Google making bad NFC moves again and again. There are so much NFC possibilities, killer applications/features and business opportunities beside the unicorn nfc payment use case, but with the current android implementation (and don´t get me wrong, it´s by far the best implementation within all current operating systems), most of it is simply not possible ...
I hate to say it, but perhaps we all should wait until apple "invents" NFC and shows us the magic ...

Nokia Developer - Remote Device Access (Diag Tools for Lumias)

I've been using their service for a while now.
This is a service offered free to people who have Nokia accounts who sign up a developer account (which is also free.)
It's purpose is to let developers use a Windows Phone that might not have access to one. It allows you to deploy xaps directly to the phone and offers a number Nokia devices. Not all of them are Windows Phones, and some are in other languages besides English. Some of the Windows Phone devices have SIMs in them and some of them actually have phone numbers where you can call it. A new feature that's available is the onboard cameras have been enabled on the Lumia 820, 920, 925 and the 1020. I'll take screenshots when I can.
The Phone is sideways for photos, so here's the screenshot of the about page.
View attachment 2268581
Also, some of the Windows Phones have a manually installed OEM dev app, On-Device Diagnostics Tool.
http://developer.nokia.com/Devices/Remote_device_access/
RDA for Lumias
RDA's Twitter News Account for new features and Devices
NOTE: I've noticed with the 928, the device lags really behind. SO FAR BEHIND, the frames you might be seeing are from minutes ago.
EDIT 1: Simply exiting the program and starting it up again possibly remedies the video lag issue. Doesn't always work, but it worked well enough to make a video finally.
EDIT 2: There isn't much info about on the ODDT from Nokia. I've uploaded and embedded the videos demonstrating the oem diagnostic tool and some other stuff I did in the session.
Sorry about the first video. Its mostly in monochrome due to the settings I had at the start of the video. After some time into the diagnostics portion I had bumped the quality to 3 or so where it displays color and animation at a decent rate.
The SIM applications are standard STK apps from the operator, they have been there since the early GSM phones. I used to read the joke of the day from my operator's SIM apps on my Nokia 3310 ?
Edited a bit. Forget what I wrote before ?
I was really hoping someone could give some info about the SIM apps that were included, I can't read the text and I don't recognize the carrier either.
I didn't know much about SIM apps previously. Verizon has never used SIMs until they started using LTE.
Apparently these devices are pre-production. This is evident when browsing the directory of the remote devices. Also, note that the diagnostic tool there supports different usb modes too, so thats good news. Now, how to export the app remotely...........
There were some files that were generated during the videos made.

Well, apparently you can append a customization package along with the regular ROM, but I only know that from Data Package Manager always marking the ROM with an exclamation mark in the field.

[REQEST] Working google wallet

I'm looking for working moded google wallet with tap to pay for LG G2 ATT... Thanks
You'll only get it to work if you change your build.prop file.

Google Wallet
I mean could we possibly change our build prop to the lg nexus, or sprint variant of the phone and have it tricked to think its not carrier specific. I did this to my vzw s3 by changing it to the sprints s3 build prop rebooted and VALA! there was google wallet and with nfc i tested out in a few stores and it worked!
secure element
I've been under the impression that google wallet wont look on the sim for the secure element and the g2 doesn't have one built in like the s3. I've done the build.prop and xposed methods without luck so far. keep climbing...
changing the build.prop will not work on this phone.
The problem is that the new (and old) wallet apps only support tap to pay on devices that have the NFC Secure Element implemented in a way that Google Wallet supports. Which to my knowledge is basically, on battery, or in the phone itself. Nothing else will work.
This is not due to our phone being inable to work technically, but Google simply hasnt added support for NFC Secure Elements contained in SIM cards.
It's completely possible to that even if/when google adds support for that, that VZW will have some sort of lock on the SIM that will still break it for us.
Add this to the fact that even ISIS doesnt work on this phone (or at least all previous root check bypasses I've tried dont work) and the fact that ISIS sucks... And you have a very non capable phone as far as tap-to-pay is concerned. Not sure if anything can be done by modders as far as the Secure Element in SIM issue is concerned, Here's hoping, but I have a feeling we're gonna have to hold out until Google at least adds the base support, and then mod past anything else verizon throws at us from there.

Yes it installs, but what people want to work is tap to pay, and it doesn't ....
Sprint G2 coming... cross your fingers
Sprint has been the savior many times over for each phone that didn't support Google wallet on the other carriers. They are releasing the G2 in the beginning of November.
We'll have to wait and hope that we can pull the correct files from the Sprint model and enable the secure element that way.
I'm not the person to do it but I bet someone reading this is....

Fyi, the xposed module in thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2425346 allowed me to get past the root check. Isis still sucks and wouldn't accept my credit cards, but the root check seems to be defeated.

We now know that Google Wallet will install and function on most current Android phones. The tap and pay function now relies on a simulated secure element to allow NFC transactions. As of today, the only phone without the hardware secure element that is said to have successfully implemented the tap and pay feature, is the Sprint G2. There has been a Sprint system dump out in XDA for a few weeks now, but I have not seen any further development on tap and pay functionality on any of the other G2 variants.
I've searched, but was unable to find any successful tap and pay transactions for the Nexus 5 yet in the US. Is it too early? I would've thought someone would have tried it by now...
This isn't Google's problem

This has nothing to do with Google's implementation or support. They are being prevented by T-Mo/ATT/VZ from accessing the Secure Element.
The Secure Element is not on the battery. Samsung put their NFC antenna in the battery (maybe that's what you're thinking), but the Secure Element is in the phones circuitry or on the SIM or a SD card. Google does support secure elements in SIM's. T-Mo/ATT/VZ wont allow any applications other than theirs to access the secure element in the SIM.
I use Google wallet everyday on my VZW G2. It works great if you are running CM. Not really sure if it will run on stock as I have not tried.

Copying my post from somewhere else:
Sony and Samsung bundle these services on all of their latest devices.
To my understanding these services are just the equivalent of the Bluetooth stack which allows apps to use Bluetooth on your phone, but for ANT+. Instead of being built deeper down at the system level (where you wouldn't find it in your apps list), it's been distributed on the Play Store to make bug fixes and new feature updates much faster than waiting for new firmware updates. Also it allows users to add ANT support to devices which already do not have it through USB.
Google already does this with their Google Play Services which they bundle into the Google Play "app" so they can bypass carriers and not wait for phones to be firmware updated (if they ever are). In this case it's just more highly visible then if it was hidden deeper.
If you delete them, it's the equivalent of deleting Bluetooth support, but for ANT+ devices instead.
You can find more information about it on their website.
As to removing it, you need root access, but if their are no apps using them then they don't consume any discernable power anyway

Good to know thanks for the info.:good:
Ant and Ant+ are for pairing with fitness devices like pedometers, heart rate monitors, and other such fitness monitors and tools. If you do not use these type of devices...simply disable the app...its just another way samsung is trying to appease all of their users and entice others to use their products. A very useful app if you are into staying fit.

Not exactly, this is not entirely correct. It's more then just "pairing fitness devices". Please read OneCanuck's first reply for a better understanding on what it is. Thank you.
Just watched a video where apparently this so called "ANT" app is just a spy infiltrated in your phone. If installed, by remote access, camera/microphone can be activated even with the phone shut off.
Link, or it doesn't exist.
Where did you find this video? And, what Proves they have knowledge & truth on the subject. Just cuz its on the web dosent mean its true or real. Theres a LOT of sh*theads out there puttíng out Bad Information, some unwitingly, some are deviant jerks. Either way, the one who accepts this bad info is exploited & his/her problems are ábout to begin. Be suspicious my friend, trust nothing, verify everything.
@?Everything: Replying to a thread that's been dead for two years now. Why?
@Strephon Alkhalikoi, things stay on the internet for longer than 2 years and search engines find them.
If you want siloed forum threads, automatically lock them after 6 months of inactivity. But there's value in having all information and interaction in one place.
To ?Everything's point, notkbna never provided proof, and readers from the future will now have both warnings and be able to decide on their own.
To make my own contribution to the actual topic, ANT+ really isn't much more than "pairing fitness devices". Sure it can be used in things like remote controls and geocaching, but it's just a protocol for monitoring sensor data.

And here you are, wasting time on a thread that ended three years ago. Neither you nor "Everything" bothered to look at the date of the last post, which means the only purpose of you two posting at all is to inflate your post counts. The only reason I knew this thread was resurrected from the dead is XDA Labs bringing it to the top of my Participated Threads window.
You're wasting both your time and mine by resurrecting this thread. The people who participated in it are unlikely to respond, and anything you may want to add is probably out of date.
Just like this thread.
