Sony SmartAR Technology - XPERIA X10 General

The video here tells you what exactly Smart AR can bring on the table. Whenever one happens to use their smartphone's camera to click pictures, this will pull up extra information on the device's screen like anything from virtual objects to images and texts which are otherwise not visible. It makes use of markerless approach where it dispenses with the need of any dedicated requisites for special markers which also includes 2D barcodes. So you'll have all the information displayed over the 3D space in front of you. All that you can see can also be navigated by touching the AR information on the device's screen

Whoa. Great find. Thanks for the link.

Only the Japanese Arc officially got it...Let's wait for the developers to port it to the x10 XD

that's cool as hell...
That level of interactivity.

Oh ****! That's awesome!

They use a ARC to show this...
BTW did anyone notice Japanese are obsessed with Pink Arc..all Arc videos from Japan have a Pink Arc..I am sure there must be a hello kitty under the battery !!

O_O i love it.

This would be awesome if it can be ported to X10. Hope its not hardware dependent.

something like that is allways hardware depended.
And i dont't think that a 1ghz cpu and a bit of gpu is powerful enough to calculate a waterfall in realtime, for me not possible. (that can my PC-gpu with a power use of more than 80Watt!!

It probably will be easy to get on our phones. There are already normal simple AR apps that work and it probably comes down to the devices CPU and camera

I guess, it will work just like 2D barcoder !
the code would be embedded on the product and by using your cell phone cam, and Sony SmartAR App you'll able to decode it.

Wouldnt that mean something would have to be added into the product design by the product manufacturer so it has something to decode?
If so, that means us down here (Australia) probably wont have a use for it for another 15 years
Would be awesome to play with, even if no practical uses

Notice the video, in which they create a virtual person and virtual environment, I guess, it has nothing to do with "embedded code" on the product side ...
embedded code was my assumption, not necessary to be correct.

2.1 early look

An early look at 2.1 version for X10 looks promising and the integration of SE apps seems a bit better.
Browser is better, the whole system even if this is a test version seems responsive enough.
Nevertheless if you have anything you would like me to test on this new version maybe I can help but I can't promise anything .
Erm..... what now???
Just one question: have they backported anything from 2.2?
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Does the move to 2.1 affect in-call volume?
This is by far the device's most annoying issue.

In general keep in mind that is a test version so content is definitely missing and the performance is good in general but should be faster when all the debug bloat is removed in the final version.
Of course all the 2.1 goods are there (multiple home screens, live wallpapers, better browser) and SE has done a better customization of the messaging app.

Aren't samsung phones greate.

Yea our phones have flaws like crappy file systems and a bad gps, but look at the bright side. Our phones cub run on 1.4ghz no problem without even showing signs of over heating. Not only that but w have the best display out there (better then most full hd displays) and we have huge amounts of developers for this phoney because it is 200% hackable. It even has download mode wich means we could restore with a click. Not only that but samsung phones are 100% developer friendly. Samsung was even nice enough not to lock our phones killer the droid phones. Respect what u guys have and appreciate it.

TouchWiz > * stock android is crap.

Just got my Nexus S ATT. My thoughts.

Coming from HTC Inspire btw.
Size-Build is awesome imo, perfect screen size, nice and lightweight and does not feel cheap imo.
Yea its superamoled but wtf at the yellowish tint....why did they do this?? My Captivate looked better and this is one of the main selling points for me, is there anything we can do to get it back to the other color temperature? Seriously....
Tried the camera a bit, not impressive at all, neither was the inspire so eh whatever.
Everything is FAST! I love it!
Stock Android!!! Woooh! No Blocking of Apps! Woooh!
Wifi seems a bit slow, it started doing a restore off the bat and downloading all my apps from the inspire and even the background! wow! Really cool feature that I had no Idea about, but some apps installed and then I kept getting a bunch of errors saying "insufficient memory" I guess I gotta do them one by one...
Thats pretty much it, Im satisfied but the screen tint is kinda leaving a bad taste in my mouth, the SuperLCD seemed more sharp and brighter then this and the whites were WHITE and the blacks werent too shabby either, dunno wtf is going on as the Screen on my old captivate was great and I loved it, this is eh...
Really hoping I didnt make the wrong choice here, the Xperia arc I had my eyes on and the only thing it didnt have was a FFC and I can live without it, beyond that I like the looks, bigger screen, lighter weight, on the arc better and sony unlocked the bootloader on their new devices so updates will come regardless, way better camera, I just dont know about this whole screen thing....
i just got mine today, so thought i'd chime in too.
build quality: not cheap imo, the ergonomics dept should pat themselves on the back. feels just right
doesn't feel laggy
sensors problem. compass seems a bit off, and the best gps lock i've had is 10m error after about 60s. i stood outside and waited, no lock. resorted to downloading gps status and downloaded the additional gps data. this seems to be the only way it's locked on. compared to a desire, this is hella slow and crappy for gps.
camera quality, i think for a phone it's good enough. for the ffc, so it's vga, but at what resolution does skype mobile use? what's that? it's not working? oh well. i think vga is fine for video calls. anything else is just additional cost.
about to test with music and haven't put a sim in yet to test the phone.
i bought it for development, so i'm now going to start messing about with it, but the phone feels nice and zippy, but disappointed with the sensors (will be testing outside tomorrow) as i'm looking to do a lot of augmented reality dev.

Xperia X10... How BAD can it be?!

In my urge to find something "different" I'm considering purchasing an X10, but all the reviews say it's just terrible...
Honestly, how bad can it be? Is this just tainted blood from when it was first released on 1.6? Am I wrong in thinking that it's a very usable device, either with the latest updates, or on a rom from the dev section?
I'd say wait another month when it gets Gingerbread and look for reviews then.
Right now, I wouldn't recommend buying it, no matter what custom rom you put on it. There are better phones you can get with the same price.
Ofcourse, I love the design, camera, UI, etc but the screen is so unbelievably bad right now, it goes over anything else
What do you mean the screen is bad? Response or the image on the screen?

I totally agree.
Most of the people that reviewed the x10 used it with Android 1.6.
IMHO, it's as bad as you think it is. But as Mr Patchy said what's the most important thing or feature do you want on a phone?
In my case, I just want a stylish, camera phone that has ANY Android OS in it be 1.6, 2.1 or 2.3, so with or without the GB update, I am quite satisfied.
Of course, any new features are welcome.

Well yes....but not 1.6. If you can remember 1.6 the screen was terrible!!! But since 2.1 SE adjusted colors and made it a very nice display imho. But, yes I to find it important to have a quality camera on my phone....big big reason why I ditched my nexus one for my very first X10. Then everything else just fell in place. I need a quality cam, reliable signal, decent battery life, and a usable messaging system, with an accurate keyboard.
That's about it.
Camera, signal, and battery life are just fine. It's not the fastest phone. It's still pretty laggy even when optimized. Things should really improve with the 2.3 upgrade but even with that, there are faster, more powerful, and featured phones out there.
For the average smartphone user, the major downside to this phone is the low in call volume. I've had to purchase a bluetooth speakerphone for the car (which is great actually). Taking a call in a loud environment is awful.

Id say go for it. You dont sound to demanding, and you dont sound like you need the best of the best. The X10 is pretty pleasing in my experience.

I've had my x10 since march. Ive had other droids before and an iphone as well but what i really needed was the great camera that the x10 does have. I've always read people having problems with low in call volume but I can say that i've never had that problem myself. I never used the phone with 1.6, when i got it the 2.1 update was already released, so i never experienced the dreadfulness (some say) that was the 1.6 rom.
The x10 is a very beautiful and stylish phone (specially the white one) with an outstanding camera, HD video and android. I can agree, that the rom (The SE one anyway) is not the fastest or more responsive thing on earth, but I don't find it too horrible either. now that it has the dual touch, the large display is a lot better to handle, even if not perfect.
I say go for it. try to find the one dubbed x10 HD (one that comes with 2.1 out of the box), because it is my understanding that it has a better display module that looks even better than the first x10s did.

If you want to make calls with your phone DON'T buy a X10! The in-call volume still is the worst I ever experienced in my life. All those updates, hacks or custom kernels didn't change anything. When you aren't in a church or library understanding someone is a challenge.

One thing to consider is how long you plan to use this phone. The X10 Is about to receive android 2.3. This however will be the last official android upgrade that it will receive. I'm close to the end of a 2 year contract so this is not such an issue for me. Granted if you are planning to use a custom roms it won't be a big issue for you either.
Edit;

It's stability ranges from no issue's at all to overheating, "usb & chipset" death.
Support from SE is very much lacking.
The x10 does not do well in low signal area's and will overheat and chew thru the battery on 3G.
The camera is nice but unfortunately lacks a flash.
The screen is great even with only 16Bit color.
It's upto you but i would suggest another handset.

Did you use the X10 on 1.6? There is a very big noticeable difference between 1.6 and 2.1. While they didnt give us 16m colors they did adjust the colors. Some of the same wallpapers and widgets i used then and now proove a massive difference. Not exactly sure how or what they did...but something was adjusted lol.

Some people will say they like it, some they'll say they don't
and scoobysnacks will barge in to say he hates it and it was the worst mistake of his life.
All in all, it will be a mess soon!
PS: I love my X10! LOL!

Haha not the worst mistake!
At least I got some good pictures from it and learned a lot about Android.
It was a good learning experience for sure.
I think they really crippled what could have been a great device and turned it into a mediocre device
actually i love my X10 more while it's on 1.6.. if timescape and mediascape from 1.6 can be ported to 2.3 with improved performance, then i will keep this phone forever..
2.3 on x10 is totally lame, everything is ugly or not unified only except for the home app and the widgets, and i like the light blue much more because it suits my white x10 look.. se is not the se it used to be. look at the new se phones now, they all the same except for the look.. don't ever tell me how much faster it is on 2.3 because i prefer better functionality rather than that speed..
now i just leave my x10 a 2.1 system with z's kernel and the 1.6 theme, while it is still a media and social phone with the pretty UI i like. i can never bear with 2.3's ugly timescape which actually becomes an laggy ugly version of the phonebook, every time you press that infinite button it links you to phonebook wtf.. but on 2.1 it also links you to email, mediascape's music/photo, and more..
again, i love my x10, but this will be my last SE phone, because SE is not doing the things i want. my next phone is probably N9 by Nokia =]
above is just my opinions
PS:
1. flashplayer is not so useful to me
2. i have tried all the WB 2.3 roms
3. i use facebook a lot and i also like FiX's idea, but a facebook app just does everything

Love my X10, which I bought 2nd-hand and in excellent condition. Would not consider buying a new set. Lots of better phones now in the same price range. Love its camera and design. For my purposes of GPS, ebooks, surf net, casual games, apps, etc, it performs adequately. Would not really change until it gets completely obsolete (by then I guess mainstream would be quad-core 5" displays?)
Also realized it plays 720p HD MP4 video downloaded from YouTube which Galaxy SL cannot play properly
my x10 just completed its 1st anniversary 2 days back, and now i am thinking of buying a new device soon!!
EDIT:
whatever happens I LOVE MY X10!..
I hate it so much when it lags, especially when I need it to work normally, then again im still on 2.1 stock... I'm going to upgrade these days.
Also he looks like he has taken quite a beating after all the falling also got screen scratched when I slided him against a metal pole accidentally while drunk... And that "XPERIA" sign on the back says only "PERIA" now hahahah,
Home button also scratched a little bit, you can see white color under it (hmm now I wonder why didn't they made them white anyway, at least on white models, it would be so cool, try getting the metal color paint off the buttons you will see pure white under it).
But all in all I'll always love it
