CampusLife TF Review - Eee Pad Transformer General

My review of the Transformer just hit CampusLife on Asus' website. Let me know what you think.
http://campuslife.asus.com/index/21...niversity-recommends-the-eee-pad-transformer/
Thanks.

Pretty much sums it up. What app do you use to take notes with the dock? I've been using Google Docs, but when the screen goes to sleep the cursor defaults to the beginning of the line for me which is a little annoying.
I'm also going to look into the Handrite app you mentioned.

I was using handrite. they added typing support for it, but the organization is a little lacking. There is a new XDA member created app called Notes. Link Here. It has a lot better organization, but no handwriting support. You win some you lose some I suppose.

Great review from a student's perspective.
Looking forward to making the most of the Transformer at university as well.
"I have purchased a sub-$10 capacitive stylus online"
That would be handy, would you recommend a particular stylus to use with the transformer?

For typed notes, I've found Evernote to be the best note-taking solution on the market. Has clients for just about anything, so your notes are available pretty much anywhere immediately.

I like springpad better. Much more comfortable design and user interface

Well taht sumed it up i probably purchase a transformer soon

I have an Acase and it works like a charm. They all pretty much are the same. I will say the finer end ones are better imho, so you might try that. I just picked mine up on Amazon with student Prime (FTW).
There is another thead for the new Wacom stylus, you might want to check that out too if you want to drop a little money on a nice one.

I can't find the place to set the setting in Handrite that allows full size drawings....as you mentioned in the review...how do I do that?

From what I've seen...the Stylus-r-us "no pressure" stylus seems like it's da bomb...I'm awaiting one right now...check out their demo videos...

I don't have my TF with me right now, I'm at work. I think when you make a new note though, i think its Menu Button->Settings->uncheck Auto Insert. Give that a try and let me know if it works.
I also tweaked my insert delay settings so it would go in a little quicker. It made it more natural.

Best Drawing App

Now that the XOOM is coming in two days. To the future! Does anyone know a drawing app that isn't crap. I would like something as pretty as Penultimate for iPad, on my XOOM. I find that the ability to draw something crude is something I have lost in the digital age.
What about Sketchbook from Autodesk https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sketchbook&feature=search_result
I think the best app i have found i that of the adam
here is a post where all cool stuff of the adam is stripped out:

Interesting.. Videos look fake but cool. If it lets me just sketch on a blank piece of paper without magic correction then cool.
i'm actually really interested in a drawing app that supports multitouch. My (2.5 yr old) son loves to hold my droidX and swipe around on it, but any little drawing apps tend to support only one finger down at a time. As he can't quite wrap his mind around the fact that the thumb on the "holding it" hand is the one point of touch, it's frustrating for him to drag his other finger around and get nothing.
The autodesk app, for example, will zoom if one finger is held down and the other is 'in motion'.
Im guessing that we’ll see an influx of tablet-minded apps hit the market place soon. Somebody is undoubtedly gonna make a bad-ass tablet drawing app.
I wish I could find a list of all of the apps designed for tablets somewhere. I know some exist, but I haven’t seen anybody / any system keeping “tabs” on whats out there…

Xoom For Note Taking

I've been trying to find a decent app that I can use to write notes on. I want to use this in class so I can just take out a stylus and just start writing. I saw that the HTC Flyer had a built in app that you can write with their stylus and then record audio at the same time.
While that app is ideal I am not sure if there is an application like that on the Market.
Has anyone used the Xoom yet in class/meeting for note taking using a stylus and keyboard yet?
Its one of the major things I need for a tablet and one that is making me consider the iPad2. I love Android too much to do that to myself but I really need this functionality lol.
I know it hurts to leave android, but get the ipad. The note taking apps on it are amazing. Note taker HD for instance allows you to simultaneously record and take notes at the same time. Handwriting recognition works beautifully with a stylus, and its very easy to switch colors to make your notes more clear.
Orrr you can follow this thread

Notetaker HD is pretty awesome. If there isn't an Android app of quality by the time I start back to school next semester I might have to grab an iPad 2. I hate having redundant devices, but I might have to get both. At least with both I'll never say damnit I wish this app would come to X or Y platform.
Give it some time, with this being a google android experience provides you better believe they're going to do something like that

If you know of an ipad app developer that designed a great note taking app, I would just email the app developer and ask if they're making one for android or not. Most of the time you'll get a response. Some actually email me back and told me that they're working on it and it'll be released soon.
I have an ipad and it definitely has more software, I use mine daily (not so much now that I have the xoom). Note taking is a bit of a disappointing experience. The keyboard in portrait mode still isn't as fast as a normal keyboard. The stylus for a capacitive digitizer isn't really a good input device. It is a wide foam tip that sometimes skips on the screen, you have to write too big. It is was a hard tip pencil point type used on the resistive digitizers (not possible with current tablets), I think that would be better.
The palm rejection software didn't work for a hook-lefty for the ipad programs I looked at at the time so I didn't even try it.
On the xoom I loaded catch, I use it on my droid and ipad and it works fine. Evernote is good too but the service is too expensive at $45; if you don't buy the service you won't get your notes when not connected to the internet.
I've been using the xoom to take notes! I just use Documents to go Writer for taking notes in class with a mini bluetooth keyboard (not the official one, but a $30 one from amazon). I use a program called grades to track my homework and other assignments. I also use kindle and docs to go PDF for viewing e-books.
I also have no desire to write "naturally" on it with a stylus. If I wanted to do that I would have a five star notebook that doesn't cost $800.
I agree that I have no desire for "natural" writing with my xoom. My biggest concern is that whatever I write I want backed up somewhere, and if I choose to continue on a desktop later.
Two possible solutions:
1. Google docs - I even put a shortcut on my desktop directly to the page with it. Bad thing you need to have wifi or at least 3g.
1a. You can try a program called gdocs. That more of a notepad, but it syncs automatically to a google docs folder
2. I use dropbox to sync a word document with my computer. Download dropbox to your xoom, and open the document once. It'll download it to a \dropbox directory. I used Astro to create a shortcut to that document so it was easy to access in a meeting. I use Documents To Go to open it. When I do open and edit it, I File--> Save and you can see it automatically uploads it to dropbox.
Neither solution allows voice recording as well, but I never felt I needed that.
Good luck
If u download spare part from market and disable app compatibilty then restart then download gdocs. From the market. That should be more then enuff of a office apps for u to use and spare parts lets all ur apps even non tab apps show full screen
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I'd hold out for the NoteSlate (http://noteslate.com) for note taking and use the Xoom for everything else.
The reason why I need to write notes, is it makes no sense in an engineering/biology class.
Ever had to describe a detailed cell drawing when you can just, I don't know, draw it? lol
And yes I can buy a notebook and just do it there, but frankly, I have a ton of e-textbooks and I rather just carry a tablet instead.
I have a netbook. It does its job for regular note taking sessions, but I can't record properly, and there is no linking between what I wrote and what I recorded.
HTC Flyer does this but its too damn small and lackluster.

I wonder if once it's released, an enterprising coder will yank and port it ala Wifi Calling from the G2 to the Nexus.
(I'm extremely interested in a solution for similar reasons.)
If you need an immediate solution "today", the best I've seen is Graffiti as a scrawl to text translator and MaplePaint as a freestyle doodle. I'm biased because I had a number of Palm PDAs so I'm familiar with Graffiti and it's quirks. There was one other as a keyboard replacement that would do the same thing and had a lot of potential, as long as I didn't have to do it on my <4" phone screen (waiting for the wifi version later this spring). It was $10 for the full version and in my aggravated state of having to play with it on my phone I uninstalled it. It did have serious potential if I was on a 10" screen though, now I wished I'd written down the name.
Well it doesnt have audio recording, but for hand held drawing, I just saw drawfree, it does do free style drawing with the ability to change colors,
it just appeared in the tablet apps section of the market
I'm an engineering student also and I'm looking for a good note taking/recording app. I have the Xoom and will be getting an iPad 2 next week which will be much better in this particular area. However, I just don't see how I could be more productive on a tablet than my laptop. A bluetooth keyboard would be really nice and it'd take up less room, but there aren't too many benefits to it.
I tried out this drawing application and there's no way it'd be useful without some sort of stylus. Using your finger just feels very awkward.

Notetaker HD
I'm not much of a poster but I've been looking for a good note taking app since I sold my iPad. I emailed Dan about porting his Notetaker HD app to Android and this is what he replied with:
I'd love to have it there, but it will be at least a while before I can even look into it. It's hard enough doing it for the iPad (written in Objective-C and in some places raw C for speed) but perhaps once the functionality gets firmed up on the iPad I can do an Android conversion, but not yet.

I've got an Ipda and a xoom and have the same goal as you did - write naturally on a tablet with a stylus. The Ipad has a numnber of apps to accomplish this whereas the xoom doesn't have anything that works yet. I use Notes Plus on the Ipad for now til xoom catches up. However, these Ipad developers did not have any sense of urgency for developing for android when I contacted them. They were concentrating on improving their Ipad offerings.
The closest thing I found for xoom was an app called Note Everything but the responsiveness for inkwriting was unusable for note taking.
I'm keepin' my Xoom though cause it rocks in every other way - just waitin for the apps to explode on the scene!
I've been using Evernote for this for quite some time now. Started on my Droid and it works flawlessly on the Xoom. I can take notes from a web browser and they automatically sync to my tab and phone. Handy to have all your notes with you all the time (like when the boss asks for something). I have one of those mini BT keyboards which paired fine with the Xoom and I've been in several meetings so far where I've use the audio recording. The files turn out to be small but it does a halfway decent job of recording. You can add pictures to each note, rich text. It's been pretty slick, and it's free.
I contacted a few iPad developers about coming to android, more specifically honeycomb and these were my responses:
SketchPad HD:
"Sorry. No current plans for Android tablet apps. There just aren't that many honeycomb tablets on the market. "
CourseNotes:
"We have no direct plans for an Android version at the moment, but we are keeping a close eye on the state of hardware/software on the Android side to see if it will be a good match for the app in the future."
Not the greatest news. Here's to hoping something comes out soon for android.

Probably just what was said about Android phones two years ago.
I'm using Catch for notes but looking at the HTC Scribe, and I really don't like HTC, I think they're on to something. Hope that's just a pen and software we can all use.
I was using Evernote, a nice program but I thought the price to have offline notes of $45/yr was excessive.

Would you suggest TF101 for note taking?

Just used mine today in a lecture that required drawing diagrams as well as note taking and the TF101 + Supernote are perfect for the job
Also: I find typing with tablet's touchscreens quite fast but the dock is a must have if buying a TF101

Not necessarily true. most NZ companies sell the TF family with the docks included
I used to use antipaper notes, but I recently bought LectureNotes. They're both really good for taking notes with a stylus or writing with your finger (LectureNotes is more customizable by far, but antipaper notes is simpler to use because it has less options). As for typing out notes, it's okay if you have small hands, but I definitely didn't use the keyboard as much as I thought I would. It's mostly just an extra battery for me.
If you want to use the touch screen for handwritten notes then get a Galaxy Note 10.1. If you are thinking of using the optional keyboard dock and use it as a notebook, then you are better off getting a proper PC (netbook or an ultrabook). IMO android/android apps are not mature enough to replace a PC for serious work. But if you are on a tight budget and want a tablet then the TF101 is still an ok choice.

Galaxy Tab was one of my choices too. Why do you recommend it more than the TF101?
I'm buying a tablet because I find it more comfortable to read ebooks with, plus I've just discovered that they can be used as a digital copybook.
My only use would be this: ebook reading, annotations, concept maps
Edit: sorry, I've confused Galaxy Note 10.1 with Tab 10.1
Anyway, how is it better? With touchscreentune, TF seems to be pretty lagless when writing

Should I buy a Nexus 7?

Hi, I know someone might have made this thread before but I'm thinking of buying a tablet for school mostly because I bought most of my books as ebooks and some as PDFs. However, I don't really like the idea of lugging my laptop around and figure that it would make more sense to use a tablet instead. I'm looking at the Nexus 7 mostly because of the small form factor. The 10 inchers (Galaxy, Transformer etc) seem like they would be heavy and uncomfortable to hold after long periods of time.
I've read tons of reviews, watched videos and all that. I know these tablets very well but I'm just looking to hear from people. Any of you use the Nexus 7 for school? Would you recommend it for school? If not, which would you recommend? Any other thing I should be aware of? Thanks in advance.

I use the N7 at school and it works well for ebooks, PDFs, web surfing and gaming. I would recommend it. I can't say how it is for note taking, but I've heard good things.
Although, you are posting this in a Nexus 7 thread so you're probably going to hear mostly positive opinions of the Nexus 7.

Having owned several different Android tablets now, I can safely say that the Nexus 7 is on another level compared to everything else. It's way faster than my Transformer TF300 and much easier to take places and hold. I read with mine a lot and my arms never seem to get tired from holding the Nexus 7. Unless you plan on also writing all your papers on a tablet, the Nexus 7 is the best choice.
I have tried the original iPad, iPad 2nd gen, and the Asus Transformer TF101 for reading, and like you said, over time it back comes uncomfortable to hold the bigger tablets.
Now that I have the Nexus 7, I find myself reading on it long periods of time without fatigue.
But it still comes down to your preference. Are you going to be doing anything else besides using your ebooks on the tablet? You may look into an Asus or Samsung since they have specialized keyboards to make them feel like netbooks.

N7 if you don't need to type a lot, Asus transformer prime w/ keyboard if you are typing a lot.

Honestly I learned my first semester with a tablet, it's MUCH easier to type notes on my tablet with a bluetooth keyboard than it was to write with the stylus. I think a small portable keyboard that's COMFORTABLE and not too small to be functional where you're hunting and pecking, and a case that has a flap for a stand is the way to go when you're going to be taking notes for lectures. For me, using a nice note taking app and having it record audio where I can start audio at the spot I'm studying (it knows where in the recording it was when I wrote the note) has dramatically increased my note taking ability.
I think the Nexus 7 was a great choice. I have a transformer prime, but I took most of my college notes on an ipad with a third party keyboard and will be using the N7 for the same purpose. I just use a stylus for accents and special sketch type notes.

Most touchscreens on mobile devices are capacitive. This means that there is a layer of capacitive material in the screen that holds a charge. When you touch the screen it changes the amount of charge at a specific point of contact.
There are styluses (styli?) that mimic or replicate the electrical conductivity of the human finger. This means they work on capacitive touch screens.
Here's an article on capacitive touchscreens for more info.

How Productive?

Are you when using your Note 10.1?
Alot of times i feel i fall behind others while trying to 'setup' my Note for intake(i dont know how people type so fast on an iPad). in class, getting slides or document with s-note side by side, i see people faster with just printouts. This is compounded when the prof. switches between multiple documents/slidedecks.
the same goes for meetings. I often find im trying to format and i miss half of what was actually said.
It may be the fact im not really great at taking notes anyway, but i still feel after a month of use, the experience is uncomfortable and is often subtraction by addition. I never was productive with my iPad either, but i see people typing very quickly with theirs. I just would study powerpoints on it.
My Note 1 same thing. A big post-it pad work much more effectively when walking up to a coworker. Maybe its the looking down/at a screen effect.
Maybe someone can come up with a training course/regime to help people like me to be more productive. i mean, thats what i bought it for.
I use my Note for everything (Love this device). Most importantly, I use it in all of my engineering classes. So, I'd have to say that I'm turbo-productive.
Same here. By the time I could dig a pen and pad out, my Note and stylus are already rockin. I do nearly everything on it and feel resentful if I have to use my laptop for anything.
I think i spend too much time looking at the screen/making sure my words are being converted correctly(im not a great speller).
Any tips?
Do handwritten notes. That's the best way. I as use sugarsync so I can have all my scanned class handouts accessible even when my computer isn't on. It also autosyncs so I don't have to so much. I also have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard but I have yet to use them. I have only used one piece of paper since school started. The note's advantage over iPad is its pen. If you don't use it why did you buy a Note 10.1? For a typing tablet the Transformer Prime Infinity would have been the tablet to get.

I am constantly reaching for the Undo button when Im not using my Note. I do my physics labs on lecture notes, my calculus notes as well, and my french homework. I find that the only thing missing is a full Microsoft Word (next year?) but Office suite suffices. I also have to convert my Physics teacher's power points using MS as I haven't found an app that can do it without messing up the slides so the only way to do it is before class. All my teachers' presentations are available online so that helps with being prepared.

I second using handwritten notes vs written-to-type or even typed notes, unless you connect a physical keyboard.
My only other issue is how with my writing style s-notes still zooms in from time to time with my palm

Try a different HWR keyboard? Don't know if it will help. I use 7notes with mazec. Nothing else gets my weird writing.

Have you tried to zoom on a new note with your fingers while in pen mode but with the pen unlocked? For me this gets rid of the red box and then I lock the pen and no more zoom.

I use the s-Pen with HWR native Samsung Keyboard.
I'm extremely productive except when I'm not.
Seriously though just read and experiment and see what works for you.

It usually does a great job (this iswritten)|but things like Commas awt the letter 1(See) often meet to be written over. I guess I should just edit mistakes After, using another program negates the uses of multi side by side.

Not much space to write in multi screen...
Is there a way to Minimize a app that is in multiwindow? Sometimes I want the S-note to go to full screen, and not close the other app completely.
Think you need to get used to what works for you first. I use s-notes for notes in class and also at work. Love this tablet.

I was the first official US purchase. I have tons of meetings with banks and work and in class two times a week.
A tutorial / training program might help some of us improve our skills.
I did just do my HW by cropping the questions from a PDF scan of textbook and posting into s-Note side by side. I just feel when time is tight I seem to need to pay more attention to what the device is doing. Alot of re - writing words.
Thanks anyway all.
Ths is my journal/sketchpad/e-reader/comunication/media hub. If the note 10.1 keyboard dock were released i'd be using this for web design and blogging too.

Sounds like you want the ATIV series. looks intersting. Wonder if the S - Pen will have all the same functions, may get if it does.
I use my note to watch YouTube and browse the net, used the s-pen twice with s-note and ps touch. Basically have no use for the s-pen at the moment. Wouldn't replace the note for any other tablet luvin it.
