CM7 video playback? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How's MP4 video playback with recent versions of CM7? I'm running Phiremod 6.2, which is based on CM7.02 and it's decidedly sub par. Not nearly as good as stock 1.1.0

There are many topics about this matter.
After 5.x Phiremod versions, having some good player (like Vplayer) someone could enjoy even matroska videos at 720p.
Mp4 play also fine as avi

Thanks. I'll give that a try. I've tried both the included viewer and MoboPlayer and, while MP4 movies play OK, framerate is not up to the standards of stock 1.1.

Well, I tried Vplayer Pro and was generally disappointed. Seems that nothing plays as smoothly and transparently as stock 1.1.0. It's unfortunate, even the official Barnes & Noble OS upgrade doesn't play video as smoothly as the earlier OS releases.
I'm sure hoping we get an update at some point that brings back true, cinema quality playback.

The next CM7 nightly should have decidedly better video playback.

Oooh, can't wait! Getting video back to something like 1.1 stock would make my day. I converted over 100 of my DVDs back when I was running Autonootered 1.1, and playback was flawless then. If Barnes & Noble could also improve the speed of the Nook App for Android then I'd have a device that could easily last me a couple of years before I get the itch to upgrade.
BTW: the work you guys do is amazing.

Slightly off topic, but the Netflix app, on the other hand, has beautiful video quality.

H264 High Profile video decoding on Iconia Tab examples

This is just a video comparation for two roms we have for our Iconia Tab.
NOTE: I'm talk about video decoding, not about any other feature on both roms.
First. Acer Stock based rom 3.1 (it sucks)
Second. Samsung Galaxy Tab based rom 3.1 (Use 1.0.4 update1)
Check it up and if you want better video playing you know galaxy rom its better for this.
You're not saying if that's 1080p high-profile or 720p high-profile. Why does it matter? Well, because 720p high-profile works just fine on the stock ROM and if what you're playing is 720p high-profile then you either have something really screwed up with your tab or you're deliberately trying to "prove" how superior the galaxy ROM is.

Obviously its 720p high no chance with 1080 on tegra2. About roms yes TALKING ABOUT VIDEO PLAYING the galaxy rom its the best of Asus,Acer,Motorola,Toshiba, samsung. Tested on every single rom on this forum just flashed and fresh. If I post this if for those who like to watch videos. Its the only thing that I can say Galaxys rom is best.
personally i found galaxy's rom a little laggy in other terms like browsing and stuff but I really like to watch videos on the tab and this rom its my choice for this task.

+1 to Werecatf
I don't really understand. 720p HP works fine on my 100% stock Iconia. I use doubletwist, moboplayer and the default movie player and they all work perfectly, so if you're having issues (especially what I see in that video) I'm going to say it's something related to your tablet or that it was tested using the older 3.0.1 builds.
obviously NOT all videos are the same, there is a video that probe it. I have several videos, that iconia with stock doesn't play smoothly, aleast not in main or high profile.
I dont know why samsung HC play better that videos.

Give a link to the said videos then.
For example the Simpsons Movie trailer from http://www.h264info.com/clips.html is 720p Quicktime-profile, ie. non-standard, non-baseline, and works just fine. The Rise of the Silver Surfer video is high-profile 720p and that too plays without an issue, no lag, no nothing.

Can it really play 720p video?

Xoom USA Wi-Fi version.
Installed rooted stock 3.2.1.
Kernel Rogue 1.4.3 Rana.
My problem is I got it MAINLY for watching videos, and I can't seem to get it to play 720p videos smoothly.
Tried playing 720p directly, tried re-encoding from 1080p and 720p using Xilisoft Video Converter (chose Motorola Xoom H.264 profile), tried re-encoding from 1080p and 720p using Handbrake and recommended user-presets.xml containing Xoom video settings etc.
It does play 1280x720p with hardware decoding, but, depending on the video, it stutters for an instant now and then.
Comparing to playing a file on the PC, or laptop, or DVD player, or blu-ray player, or my WD HD Live media player, it's NOT as smooth, i.e. I do notice those "stops" and they drive me nuts.
Should I wait for ICS or change some settings or simply sell the tablet?
Thanks.
This has been addressed a few times already but I will try to give an answer. Yes the Xoom can play 720p videos. The most important factors being what format and which player you use. I personally use Dice player which plays all my 720p videos with no conversion needed however if you must convert, DVD Catalyst does a stellar job. I have played 720p movies files in .mkv and .avi format on Dice player ranging in size from 2GB to 4GB with no issue. The only setting change I made in Dice was to have the stock player handle .mp4. I have used the stock player to play 720p .mp4 files with no issue. Use the search function to find the threads explaining how others are doing it.
Thanks, I'll try again.
Tried RockPlayer, MoboPlayer, VitalPlayer so far - same
And I did use the setting for 720p recommended by others.
http://dev.tonic1394.com/2011/04/video-playback-on-motorola-xoom/
The stuttering was still there...
Try Dice Player. What video size/format are you trying to play?
1280x720 X.264
I'll try the Dice Player, thanks.

You could also experiment with the ICS alpha build--it's very stable on nightly version 17--and plays videos very well. Read the Team Eos nightly thread in development for more information.
Yes, I thought I wasn't going to sell until at least seeing how it worked on the final ICS for Xoom...not sure I'm willing to play around with the nightlies though, but thanks for pointing that out
BSPlayer, the older version (check the thread in the XOOM App section for the APKs), works great too. Especially since it doesn't try to sell you the program every few seconds while watching videos.
For best results with any player, make sure to use baseline profile when x264 encoding. No B-Frames or weighted P-frames.
What's really funny I encoded The Guard in 1080p to 720p, due to wider screen the end result (keeping the ratio) is like 1280 by 514 or so.
So I used these settings:
http://www.notionaddicts.com/forums/showthread.php/4291-Tegra-2-Friendly-Handbrake-Settings
Also attached a Word doc in case the URL goes bad
So B-frames are there, I repeated the profile one for one.
Guess what? perfectly smooth playing, using MX Video Player 1.5a.
No trial, free, just ad based, but I have Adfree for Android running, so I don't see any ads whatsoever.

Do CM9 play Video from MicroSd card yet?

Do you guys know if the unofficial nighty CM9 ROM is capable of playing video from MicroSd cards yet?
I use mobo player a lot on my rooted HTC Evo 4G to play all sorts of video files like AVI, WMV etc. I just bought a Nook Color. I plan to root and instal Cyanogemod as soon as it arrives.
I would like to just go for CM9, but if it doesn't play video file than must stick with CM7 for now.
Also is Nook Color hardware capable of playing 720p video?
I couldn't tell you the quality that I have movies at, but I play stuff with moboplayer fine. Just have to make sure you go into settings and set soft-decoding.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Thanks for the input. As long as it plays I don't mind Soft-decoding.
Actually the best video player is...
MX Video Player, I tried using Mobo and the video showed but it was very glitchy (probably due to poor codecs). I downloaded Season 2 of The Walking Dead, and tried it on the MX Video Player (found in the Android store), works like a charm...almost like you have HW decoding. Perfect, smooth video. I can confirm that CM9 with the latest build plays .avi videos perfectly (and probably other formates) all done on my HP Touchpad.
Found it.

Will ICS hardware acceleration let some MKV's play more smoother?

I still get lagging playing some 720p MKV's in HC. Just wondering if the ICS hardware acceleration would improve on this and make it work smoother?
I have tried all players such as MOBO, MX, RockPlayer and Dice. Sometimes when I choose HW accelration it crashes the tablet.

Remember this is a leaked Beta rom. Thou most things do work there will still be alot of tweaking done by acer before there final push. Also many apps are not totally updated to support ICS.
So we would hope hardware acceleration will improve but to say YES would be guessing.
hope this helps .
I've just tried it, but i have to say it's not smooth at all. Maybe later
(MX player, Lightspeed_4 ROM)

You should try convert mkv to mp4 and use MX for play.

I rather not try to convert since all my movies for the home is on a server. I try to stream to the Iconia but it lags. I have tried it on SDcard and it still lags. These are 720p rips of BR usually 4-6gb in size.
HW Acceleration works, even on the leak. The problem is that it doesn't support Vorbis/Theora, which are mostly used in mkv files... So these videos are never going to play really smoothly, they might work or not depending on system load and whatnot.
As to some apps not being properly ported to ICS: True, but for MX video player it is officially supported and has been for a while.

I had the same issues before. A500 can't play smoothly rips of BR because it is not fast enough to process. Converting video to mp4 or wmv with lower rip-level is the only solution. Sometime the converted larger than original file but... it's work.
I use DVD catalyst 4 to convert my DVDs to MP4 for my Iconia. There are presets for the Iconia. I personally like the HQXT preset. It gives good performance for both action and slow paced movies. My movie file size is normally 1.3 gig.
Its not only mkv that has problem with ICS, its every HD video 720p and above. Even streaming videos like NBA is lagging and ugly to watch. But I know this will fixed soon because v96 video playback is really smooth.
Try streaming again using a program like Emit or Qloud. Both will re-encode the files to a specified bitrate while streaming and you can leave them on your server. I haven't tried it over 3G/4G but it works great over wifi.
yes indeed, but you need a good CPU on your computer for that.
not my case..
and frankly, seeing some low-priced chines tab running 720p without any problem makes me a bit crazy..
tegra2 was a real success.. from sellers points
but at a technical POV, not sure it's soo great

New Codec from NVidia

guevor has repackaged the NVidia codec. If you want to try it, get it from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26430343&postcount=1466
As it is within the OC kernel thread, people may not notice it.
All credit goes to guevor.
Been using the new codecs with Megatron ROM and guevor kernel 17c and so far everything is working great.
Most of my 720p MKV's (H.264) collection play without droping frames... but for some reason (probably bitrate related) most anime movies still drop frames.
Nevertheless I'm very happy with these codecs
I was planning on trying these out today but unfortunately I donĀ“t have the time today and have to wait until tomorrow.
Codecs work fine, no drop in performance, hd is a tad smoother. Standard quality and similar is the same, thanks.
Just gave this one a try on Revolver. Unfortunately, I have to report it made playback of my 720p h264 mkv videos noticeably sloppier.
