[Q] Battery life? You just have try it yourself - EVO 4G General

How is it that every HTC EVO is absolutley unique? Aren't these things mass produced in a factory?
Every question that I see asking about the performance of a rom, stabilty of a kernal, or typical battery comsumption is answered immediately with "all evos are diofferent and you have just try every rom/kernal combination and see whch one works for you."
I know there are some OEM parts that differ and that there are different kinds of users, but the same can be said of many products. and you can still come up with "MPG is about XX, actual milage may vary".
Does it seem odd for something that is built to strict specifications to be so erratic in performance metrics?

To a point yea but not really I mean
Some have diff screens and 3point touch and 5point touch and then there is the different cameras and figure some have cheap batts from China and some have sedieo and some have reg extended some got stock etc so while yes if we all used standard **** with our Evo it would probably only vary slightly and I know everyone won't upgrade all of their stuff from hboot to prl

Well said man.. way too many variables when it comes to comparing battery life!

It's quite weird how it works...
I flashed miui a week or so ago, that's it. No new kernel, no new radio... just miui and I'm having amazzzzzzing battery life. I unplug at 8 or 9 am every morning when I wake up and I still usually have 10-15% or so when I go to bed at midnight, with regular use throughout the day.

It's basically the same sort of theory behind overclocking desktop/laptop chips. There is quite a bit of variability when they make chips. They're all tested to meet certain basic specs, but some chips are able to exceed those specs by a lot, some by a little, and some maybe only just barely passed the test. For an out of the box/stock experience, they'll all basically perform the same. But when you start pushing them, you see the variability.
Even if you're not overclocking with a custom kernel, similar variability dictates how aggressively you can undervolt, which is something most custom kernels try to do to save battery life.

I unplug mine at 6:30 every morning and when I go to bed at 11PM or so, I'm usually at about 75-80% with normal use. Yes, it's an extended battery, but that still a huge difference, and running sense, too!

Same goes for Vehicles and they are basically manufactured to tight specs as well . You can put two vehicles that are identical on a dyno and one will put out more horsepower then another and they are both bone stock . Granted the difference isnt huge but some perform better than others . Welcome to the world of mass production LOL .

Car: do you drive the same as me? Accelerate at the same rate? Brake the same? Turn at the same speed? Cruise? (I'll stop, I'm sure you get the point)
Phone can be similar: different apps, different sync settings, different screen brightness, vibrate on/off, different volume, different sd card (manufacturer and class) and just different usage period.
And of course things already quoted: hardware 002/003/004, different camera manufacturer, different screen manufacturer, etc.

Thats why I said "DYNO" in my statment there for removing the variables you listed above and strictly measuring the HP put out by two of the same vehicles . But good attempt at a point . Also yes different people put different apps and setting on each different phone . But those settings you listed doesnt exactly have any bearing on how one phone can handle undervolting better than the next .

lag?

So what is creating the lag on the magic?is it a hardware limitation or is the android os to blame, and why it will run ok for few days and then start to slow down?i am out on the road for work alot and i do realy use my magic alot for surfing the net ,watching movies, and so on and it get frustating when the softkeyboard start to slow down like now wile im writing in this post.
If is software related i hope google will resolve the problems soon at the next update,i realy hate when the browser does not scroll up or down the page smootly to.
You have to reboot the phone once a day. Its like this for almost all smart phones. I had too do it to my Iphone twice a day sometimes. There is also a program in the market called taskiller, I suggest getting it. The program can free up 20m in 2 sec.
What im asking is the reason why the lag appear.bad coding of android os?apps r not build properly?
Hard to tell, I noticed that some apps are bad, when I cleaned up some of my market apps and removed them, I stopped getting the slow down near as often. I take it some of those apps had memory leaks. I actually sped up when I removed task killer, I'm not making accusations, but the version I was running might have had problems of it's own.
I will take exception to the idea that phones have to be rebooted all the time, they shouldn't. WinMo I had to reboot twice a day at times, but the Iphone...I rarely rebooted, and I would go six months or more without a blackberry reboot (usually only to flash to a new rom).
Hard to say without some really good diagnostic time whether the memory is leaking from apps or core OS processes. If it was obvious, the android developers would have already fixed them (and some probably are in upcoming revisions). That being said, Android will get there with a little time. I wouldn't go back to the iphone unless there is a major change in the way it operates, and I would only switch to blackberry if they drastically improved their Storm. The openness of Android and above all the notifications system on Android trump its rough edges. Now if only copy and paste.........
Ho well i hope google is going to sort it out soon.
My friend just upgrade to the new iphone and i must say that is very quick, speedyyyyyyy.
Is android os full accesible by the devs or there are part of it that only google have right to?

Don't worry the new iphone has the same issue, has to reboot every day or so once it's all loaded up with apps and cache. My brother has the new one and it's on par with the Magic for speed but you have to remember it's only a "one show pony".

Its on par?? By the look of it is not near up to the speed of the iphone.
So are parts of the os that devs on this forum cannot acces?

Which magic are you using? My Rogers 32A magic is at least as fast if not faster in some things than the 3GS. I had both here testing and they are equal in alot of things. But the Magic can multitask where the iphone can run one app.

I see a lot of phones through the course of a day and i can tell you ALL smartphones eventualy end up with lag. The more they can do, the more likely they will slow down. Even your laptop, desktop, car, and body will slow down with time and use. We demand more features, power, battery life, colors, channels, options, etc..... We had none of this twenty years ago. Does anyone remember their Commadore 64? Keep your perspective. 99% of the tech we use today came about in the last 35 to 45 years. We get angry because we have to wait 3 seconds to find out our latitude and longitude because were looking for a starbucks. If you want it to run better, turn it off and do without it for a day. You'll not complain about minimal lag for a few days after that.
Sorry for the rant folks....

You're so right Serious!
Yes i do agree to.
I wanted only to know what would cause the lag, thats all.
Understandable. We would not have gotten this far if we had never tried to work out the details and make them better. I suppose it's a double edged sword. By the time we perfect one device we are off to another. Until we do though, the daily reboot is our best freind. Hope I did not sound like I was comming down on you.

I think this is a valid and important question. I just bought the tmobile mt3g and the keyboard lag, when web browsing, is the single most annoying issue. Is this a hardware limitation, or something that we can expect to improve as the software is refined?
I've been googling around trying to find an answer to this but it seems like most threads are concerned with "features lists" rather than "user experience". It makes sense. It's a lot harder to quantify the latter, but we still should try, especially since this is the axis where the open platform model might be inferior to the proprietary one (apple/palm). I mean, I'm pretty sure android is going to have a better feature list within the year (if not already). The real unknown is whether it will be a fast, integrated, polished user experience.
Maybe one of the gurus on this list can given an enlightened opinion. My guess is that it's mostly a software issue. The keyboard works a lot faster in SMS or gmail than in the browser. There really isn't an excuse for this other than lazy software. All the javascript is taking up cycles that the keyboard needs to be snappy perhaps?
can someone answer my question please:
Is android os full accesible by the devs or there are part of it that only google have right to?
If I am not mistaken, the max CPU frequncy is set to 385 MHz instead of the 528 it is capable of on a stock rom. Underclocking can save battery life, and that is one on the major complaints I see about the newer phones. More speed means less battery life. If you want to get the most out of the MyTouch your best bet is to root the phone and set your max speed to the 528 level using SetCPU or a similar program. The phone is very capable of doing more than what you see out of the box. You just need to work on it. We are here because we are not the general public that likes to just "leave it as it is". Root it, get one of Cyanogen's (my favorite) or some one elses roms, and SetCPU. you will be impressed.
I got root and runing cyan roms.
It seems that many people dont get the question that im asking. Maybe my english is not great and seems that anyone is trying to jump in the same vagon defending android without realise i m not trashing it .
Some of the answers i do think are unrelated to my question ,so maybe is me that is not clear.?
So you have lag on Cyanogen's rom? Which rom is it? Do you have a lot of apps installed? Have you tried SetCPU? I have a two MyTouch running Cyan's 4.0.1, SetCPU has me running at 528 max, 328 min. i do not have any lag on my keyboard or any of my apps. I reboot once a day but have never realy needed to. Post what you have going and I will do my best to help you out.
Sorry. You are right. I did forget about the original question. "why does lag apear in the first place". I don't have a lot of specifics for you, but I can tell you that phones are manufactured for the "general" public. Build it, get it out, and don't support it properly is what I see. I work for a U.S. service provider and I spend my day trying to get people to speak up. I do what I can to help everyone but I aint no jeanus if you get my meaning. If we demand more we will get more. And yet people keep on buying devices mearly because they are the "in" thing. Remember the rule of "supply and demand"? If we buy it and dont ask questions, they will take the money and run. Damn I am being a radical. It is true though. If we don't give them hell, they will just keep doing the same thing.

SGS 3 days on......

Now that I have had a few days playing with my new phone I thought I would leave some feedback.
Firstly the screen is amazing! I have had several iphone4 owners grovelling at it.
Swype is a touch of genius! I am using it now to type this and its fast as hell!
The battery usage is pretty severe compared to what I expected! Does apps like juice defender work?
Gps is flakey! My tracks was bouncing all over the place, so I guess I am joining the rest of you praying for a firmware fix. I will try co pilot tomorrow to see if its usable.
Lag was a problem, however have been using advanced task manager and it seems to help. I know rooting is supposed to be better with autokiller, but I believe rooting invalidates your warranty? Also, when I reboot my phone I have about 150mb free, but after a days use using adv task man I only have 55ish.
Anyhow in all I am happy with the phone, just need to work on the gps and lag.
Btw, how do I figure out my firmware number?

in settings, about, and somewhere down the line.
You should be really restrictive when killing processes. Use the ignorelist for just about everything that might be used somehow by something.
Example, start the camera and it can take 2 - 4 sec to be ready to shoot. Have it idling in the background and its up in a split second. This goes for everything.
The onlu thing I kill is games, market and some other useless stuff i tend to run sometimes. Remember: you dont need a lot of free memory, for a quick phone you need your often-used-apps idling and loaded in mem.

Similar to my imrpessions in the first days. Screen is outstanding, the only reason I keep wanting to keep the phone. Swype is nice but didn't get used to it.. still type faster on my Nokia E72...but that is a matter of practicing.
GPS.. *sigh*. No comments. It is useless.
Also the lag was annoying but I won't complain much on that since I never tried any of the unofficial fixes.... still, out of the box it is a problem, definitely something Samsung didn't polish well enough.
Plenty of lag and memory fixes available.

yeah theres a decent amount of lag out of the box, but TONS of fixes available
About the battery, OP, wait untill you pass 5-7 initial charge cycles. Battery time increases twofold or more.
On my first battery cycle, it wasted out in around 11 hours.
Now i get more than 2 days of heavy use, and up to 6 of light use.

Your SGS must be really different from mine, perhaps even one of the 6 units that were released in proper shape worldwide. Hang on to it.
Not only you have no GPS issues but you also have no lag.
Mine has no GPS and it lags on the stock ROM (JM2)
Sure. There are lag fixes. And you can always buy an external GPS unit for only 150€ or so.
I just have the nasty habit of presuming I won't need to fix anything right after unpackaging and booting or pay more after spitting out 599€ for a "cutting edge" smartphone.
Customers... always so ungrateful and never pleased. /spit.

I really hope your right, as mine is still not great tbh.
I will try ultimate juice to see if that helps..
Should I be doing anything in specific in the charge cycles? i.e letting it fully discharge, or anything else?
Ref Lag;
I did experience it out of the box, but only after using lots of multiple apps. I found that task killer fixed the problem, and I have not tried any other fixes.
However I still cant understand my RAM usage.
150MB free on boot, which then decreases to 130MB after say an hour.
2+ Hours later I am down into the 90's...and after 8+ hours into the 60's.
This is using task killer regular enough...so not sure why it happens.
Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
Mine could sometimes take up to 10 seconds to open the phone app on the stock rom. Very annoying. Especially when there's an incoming call and you can't answer because the answer key just won't show up. Now I'm running the jg5 rom and samset 1.6 rom. And everything is lightning fast now. Faster than my iphone 4.
Using the Galaxy S as well for a while now. The phone is AWESOME. After the lagfix this is the best android device I ever messed with. I thought I would want to change the launcher but after getting used to the iPhone like design, touchwiz is actually one of the best skins I have seen. Rotates both ways, you can change the order of the homescreens easily and you can have as many as you want up to 7. It offers some cool widgets just like Sense does and the menu can be all reorganized and not be mixed up by alphabetical order. Even the built in keyboard is awesome for me. Fits with the rest of the design and its multitouch enabled. And you have Swype preinstalled if you want that as well. The camera is awesome and despite the lack of flash you can still take some really decent pics with this if there is some light around.
The screen is just on the sweet spot. 4" with Super AMOLED. Im in heaven really lol.
Even my mum that is a complete iPhone addict is now surrendered to this phone capabilities. Nice job by samsung and obviously by the genius who developed the lagfix and 1 click root.

It's worth noting though that Beowulf_pt complained that reports of poor GPS and lag were the things holding him back from purchasing this phone (so I'm honestly wondering why he purchased the phone in the first place). Especially since purchasing it every post he has made seems to have been complaints about the GPS..
The Lag exists, but it doesn't make the phone unusable. Agreed it could be better, but whether it really affects anyone is questionable. It may be mostly fixable by switching scheduler and caching better. Remember, phones such as the Nexus one might be better currently, but they also shipped with a deluge of problems which are now fixed too.. Even the iPhone 4 did..
The GPS does have obvious issues (the accuracy indicator is still wrong, which to me suggests software), but other than the GPS, I am still happy with the phone. Also remember the battery issues depend on what you are running (some apps don't let the phone sleep properly).
I'm still happy to give them until Froyo to fix it. If Samsung doesn't fix it properly by then (and instead does something silly like tell us the "signal strength indicators are wrong"), then I'll try to get a refund. But at the moment, I'm willing to give them a chance.
It is surprising to read people who have no gps problems or lag issues straight out of the box, either they are very lucky and have bought fully functionaly sgs or are quite used to devices which take awhile to respond (I think it is the latter)!
Certainly there are fixes out there to improve the gps and lag issues but none have completely resolved the problem. I'm using JM5 which is working brilliantly and gps seems to work quite accurately especiallywith co-pilot no-other fix has been applied (to scared to!), the lag has also improved significantly but it does occassionaly freeze.
I'm also willing to give the boys at sammy a chance till 2.2 version is out or till Desire HD is launched, which ever comes first. Till then this is the best device out there inmho.
I too didn't notice any lag, until I installed the fixes, then the lag was noticeable as the phone was MUCH smoother.

Slow X, looking for info and/or advice

My X has been running slow and a little funny. I have froyo 2.3.15, with FlyX Rom, Revolution Themes, LauncherPro Plus, and Beautiful Widgets all running. Revolution was the last thing I added about a week ago and ever since then, it seems to be running different. Its slower to react, doesn't change from portrait to landscape very fast, whenever I unlock the screen, if I'm holding it straight up and down, it always opens into landscape mode. This seems like a pretty standard setup to a lot of people on here. Any advice and info on this topic would be appreciated, or just conversation about what others are running similar or different. Thanks a lot!
(also, I ran quadrant benchmark with scores between 1440 and 1495)

I cannot recall whether or not FlyX includes the build.prop modifications or not, if not you would definitely want to make those. Other than that the only other thing I would recommend is giving MinFreeManager a shot, it changes the "low memory" requirements for the built in memory manager (task manager) of android. If configured properly it can really make a difference in both battery life and performance (not speed, but responsiveness). It does not do it for you, it lets you set the fields, so learn how to do it first, it varies depending on your use of your phone, I don't run any facebook or other streaming applications so my settings are 6,8,16,60,60,150 but this could vary greatly, and may adversely affect others, so read up on the app in the market.
Again that app will improve responsiveness, in that it will give you less delay when swyping the screen in the UI and such, in that your phone does not have to kill a task to free up memory to complete the next task, it will not improve benchmarks, at the same time, poor memory management will give you poor performance in real world use but may not affect your benchmarks, another reason that benchmarks are poor ways of measuring performance.
Outside of that, what it really comes down to is our Android systems need hardware acceleration... Google really needs to get of there... well... you know... and get with the game here, based off the recent discussion and their advisement to manufacturers to hold of the release of tablets until the next android release, I am hoping they are currently implementing it, but without GPU hardware acceleration in the UI and web browser, we will constantly have the appearance of choppiness and the illusion of poor performance even on our overqualified phones... it is one area where I am sad to say the iPhone has us beat... very sad to say... as a matter of fact, I just washed my mouth out with a bit of soap...
EDIT: a good example of how well that application worked for me over actual "tasks killers" on the market such as task killer and such... before having this app installed and configured, a quick investigation of "settings, applications, running services" and viewing the available memory, it would display "Avail:16MB+98MB in ##" after having this app and having it configured it displays "Avail:72MB+116MB in 26" I am assuming my poor UI responsiveness was due to the first of the two numbers...
Yeah I always hate to say that about iPhones too but they do seem to keep the same speed and responsiveness ALL the time... Oh well, they've been around a little longer so Android will just have to keep working on it. I believe it'll be there soon. I will try that app you recommended. I appreciate the speedy response.

no problem, yeah, the iPhone has had GPU hardware acceleration in the UI since it came out, they structured their OS around it, Google chose otherwise, and I can only hope they regret that decision now... but hopefully they will make amends for that...
just make sure you read the post referenced in the app itself. It is written for the HTC Hero which only has 288MB of Ram as opposed to our 512MB Ram, but it still basically applies.
Keep in mind:
It does not automatically set on reboot until you tell it to, do not tell it to until you are sure the settings you have set do not mess with anything.
You probably will not notice a difference for about an hour... at least that's how long it took for me to truly notice a difference... I'm not really sure why, it apparently took that long for the priorities to take affect, and get the right processes killed, etc., etc. After that, especially later that day I was truly noticing a difference, especially in typing... I have always had a delay when typing on this phone, and that seems to be gone now...
yeah i was guessing that. i read an article at androidcentral.com about it and just set it to aggressive for now. applied it, but the specs under "running services" haven't changed so i'll give it an hour or so. i'll let you know how it turns out. thanks again!

Sounds good, your welcome and good luck!
If those settings work out for you without any problems, you'll probably want to up them a bit, it might say aggressive, but they are only so aggressive... If it makes a big difference for you then stick with them, if you still have slow down, and you are running what you described before, you can probably get away running settings similar to what I posted, just don't have them set on boot just in case, if they don't work out you can always set them lower or back to a preset. It is definitely something you can expiriment with, if worst comes to worst, you can always reboot, but as long as you don't touch the first 4 values, you won't mess anything up, the worst that you will do with the last 2 is temporarly screw up facebook sync. or something similar, and really you can get away with changing the 4th value to, it just has a chance of affecting more things, but I doubt you'll end up affecting anything with values around 50 anyway. Like I said, experimenting never hurts, slow phones do... Just keep an eye on it ;-) good luck again.
To add a little correction.if you are running fly x then you are not running 2.3.15 you are running the earlier related release it Is based on. Even if you did have2.3.15 before installing it fly x over writes the system to the files it uses. All roms do. Do you actually have like 2.3.9 I think

It does say 2.3.9. I inquired about this before because I used teamblackhat to get .15 and the system never seemed to change to .15 every time I tried to download it... I guess that's why, because of flyx...

After reading Captian Taco's post I was eager to try it out, and its actually making a big difference =D thanks!
Yes it is... its been running much smoother and more responsive all day. Thanks again captaintaco... (boy thats kinda funny to type...)

Thanks CaptainTaco! Installed MFM to clear up my "lag" issues that are usually experienced in the evenings after a reset first thing in the a.m. each day. Before MFM it wasn't a huge deal to do a reset to clear up the issue, but I much prefer it to just work right all the time.

Hey don't thank me, thank the creator of MFM, I'm pretty sure he was one of the first to discover the power of Androids integrated minimum memory management, if not the first. Just glad to share my discovery of his discovery haha. But yea, to be honest I don't even use a custom Rom anymore, it runs so quick just having that (thought it works even better in conjunction with your standard simplistic task killer such as "advanced task killer" just to kill apps in the foreground after you are done with them, since many apps don't include a way of closing themselves out...
I still try the custom Roms out and play around with them for the hell of it, but as for right now, I rely heavily on corporate integration, and most of the good blurless Roms remove features required for true and proper corporate sync, such as calender sync and the like... and I just don't like touchdown pro... So this helps me out greatly... remove some bloat, throw launcher pro on there, and get this fix fired up, phone runs like a dream... now if only they could get exchange active sync running like it was on Sense... best implementation I have seen of Exchange active sync so far... I do miss that...
Well after all the advice I ended up installing the zapx rom last night. Wow! It is sooo fast... everything just responds and reacts so much faster than before. I suggest installing zapx to anyone. Best rom so far I think...

[Q] Yep, A newbie! Need some serious direction.

Ok, Now i've had a mogul for the past 4-5 years, didn't wanna spend more money on a phone that will be old hat in a few months. anyhow, i gave in and now i've got an epic on it's way, today.
I want to get the most from my phone and it's battery life, I also want to use my phone as my mp3 player. so can someone direct me to the best step by step directions on how to do everything. I d/l'd this link
firon.net/xda/one.click.root.exploitv2.5.5 ( ) zip &
32-bit drivers: firon.net/xda/Samsung_Mobile_...00_Epic_4G ( ) zip . . but not to sure what to do from here.
Maybe someone can direct me to the easiest steps to follow as i'm really clueless on what to do and what i'm looking for. any help would be great and thanks in advance!
I'll let someone who knows more about what you need answer, but I just wanted to comment on the Mogul. That was my first "pda phone". I had 2 other windows based pda's, so it was a natural fit. I really liked that phone, and it worked well. I had wi-fi issues with it, so Sprint gave me a Touch Pro. I liked that phone as well. I had some other issue with it and Sprint replaced it with another Touch Pro. The tech said my phone was the first he's seen that the user actually uses it to its fullest potential. I like to get the max I can out of the phone. I had Android on the Touch Pro, but didn't use it for day-to-day things because it ate the battery. I decided to get the Epic because I didn't want to wait for Windows Phone 7, and I didn't like the direction MS was going with it, so Android was the obvious choice (iPhone wasn't even in the running).
I'm glad you joined the Android ranks. What are your impressions of the Epic/Android coming from the Mogul?
It depends on what you want to do with your phone as far as staying on eclair or updating to the froyo leak. If you want to stay on eclair then I would root it with the one click root plus cwm. Then you can install a custom rom/kernel to help with battery life. If you want the froyo leak then I would root it with the one click with cwm version 3. That cwm version will change your filesystem over to ext4. Then you can flash a froyo rom since most are compatable with ext4. The only thing is there are no custom kernels for froyo since we don't have the source code yet. Tell me what way you want to go and I'll help you out.
I've played with a few friends phones, but they were not rooted, and they always kept their power cords with them. I hated that. but i like the keyboard, the screen resolution, i honestly haven't touched any apps yet to date. I am very vanilla when it comes to learning the phone and the whole android process. I have read different forums/blogs and they all direct me back to here for the best help. so I'm here. The biggest thing I really want to do is use the phone as my mp3 player and take advantage of having a very simple os and get the most out of my battery. I do use the inet on my mogul with skyfire but it just doesn't work anymore. I will need to use my calender, fb, things like that, i do like the neat icons that i've seen on different pages. i also was told they even have apps to design your own ringtones with music on ur phone. that's really cool too.. I really feel like a dinosaur with this stuff..
ok, the phone just got here, i'm gonna charge it 1st and then call to activate it after it's finished. also, for xtra cords, any site better than any other?
ok, the phone is here, i've added some apps. and contacts.. now what?

Load some music up and start using it.
somehow i loaded everything on it, but it went to the phone and not the sd card! is there a way to move it over to the sim card now?
and what do i look under?
cdma phones don't have sim cards. And it doesn't have very much internal memory either, so are you sure you didn't put it on your sdcard like you intended?
sure did.. ur right. see, i am a complete rookie on this one.
Buy an extended battery
I bought an extended battery on eBay back when I got my Epic last November. It is a 2800mAh battery and I can actually run about 10-15 hours of light usage with wifi/4g/gps turned on (10-12 with wifi on, 13-15 with wifi off). If I am watching TV on my Slingbox app, it usually runs for about 6-7 hours. Pocket Legends tends to be a bit of a battery killer but I can still go for about 4-5 hours of gameplay (although the phone tends to overheat...lol). I highly recommend a bigger battery - it does make the phone bigger, but imo it is worth the extra weight. The name on the battery is "Yoobao". I have been using it for about 3+ months now with no issues.
good info. . . how much they running? i really just wanted to run some low power apps..
I think mine was about $35-40. It wasn't very expensive. I just did a quick ebay search for "epic 4g extended battery" and there are now many options for about $15-30. I may actually try out one of the 3500mAh batteries, seeing that the price has dropped! Never hurts to have a spare. Some have separate battery chargers included as well.
Thanks man, I just ordered like 3-4 new cases.. can't remember, i like to change the colors up at times bc i get bored!
Most cases won't fit over the extended batteries, sadly. I'm getting ready to sell my sweet Body Glove case because I never use it. Makes me sad, I really like that case..
Man Oh Man, what to do...

[Q] I'm thinking my phone's hardware is bad. Asking for opinions.

Edit: Problem might be solved, thanks to kennyglass123.
I never thought that my battery could be the problem, since I got a replacement phone, but I had forgotten the battery was transferred from the original, malfunctioning phone. I'll be trying this solution as soon as I get paid.
Original Post:
For starters, I've had the Epic since it was originally released. I'm on my second Epic, as the first one needed to be replaced after the speakerphone speaker went out. (I hardly even used it outside a moderate ringtone.)
Here's my issue with both:
Every time the phone get's warm to the touch, while I'm in a warm environment, and I'm using the phone heavily, everything starts to force close like crazy. This includes completely bone-stock ROMs, and I definitely don't overclock, as I'm having issues already. This has happened to me on Froyo and Gingerbread, leaked, official, and custom ROMs, to include RFS/EXT4, and journaling on or off. This has happened to me 5-10+ times over the course of a year.
Every time it happens, my first instinct, after having to pull the battery, since so much is crashing, I go straight into CWM and I wipe dalvik cache or even cache/dalvik. Sometimes, I'll even wipe completely and reload everything from ground up, to include not recovering with Titanium and downloading every app one by one.
No matter how stable I get any ROM working on my phone, this problem occurs when I'm in a warm environment (server room, restaurant kitchen, or summer day), and I'm using the phone very heavily (heavy multitasking, installing lots of apps in market, etc).
Is this me being way too demanding on an older phone, or is this my hardware needing to be replaced? I'm curious, because I would have already gotten a faster phone to suit my needs, but I just now found a better job, and I haven't had extra spending money to throw down another $700; not to mention, I can renew my contract Jan 1, 2012.
Out of all the random issues I've had with all the different ROMs, especially leaks, this problem seems to be very consistent in the conditions I stated, across all ROMs. When I reload my phone from Odin to CWM flashing, now, I do it very slowly, in a cold room, with cool air being blown over it from a fan. I then slowly reload all 40+ apps from the market, one by one, and it takes forever.. every time. I hope some of you can imagine how frustrating this is, being I paid the $650 out of contract price for a top-of-the-line phone, and I've had issues like this over the past year. My phone organizes my whole life, including a full-time job, a part-time job, full-time school, my social life, and everything else. I can't have it crap out on me every time I need it most; and, it does.
Is this my Epic, or is this just all of them? I'd like to not think so, since I see so many people running them overclocked. I really hope I'm not just going crazy.
Thanks in advance for any constructive input in my situation. I'm not sure if it's because I'm at school, but my searches weren't pulling up any results at all.
If it's happening consistently with different ROMs, I would say it is a problem with your hardware. I have an annoying issue with my phone, 'Stay Awake' in Development doesn't keep. Such a minor annoyance compared to what you have to deal with.
If you can document it, you have a case for a replacement phone. But then, your contract renews in two months.....
Have you tried other batteries? I say definitely hardware given the info you provided. It may be a flaky battery causing some intermittance then the FCs. Although that shouldn't happen on completely stock RFS. So probably phone memory is bad.
I'll be trying this possible solution.

You know, when I got my replacement phone, the original battery and cover were moved over to it. I can't believe I never thought to buy a different battery.
I've been wanting to try the suggestion I read about a new Epic Touch battery which is slightly higher capacity, and it still works great. I'll be sure to read up on exactly which one it was before I purchase.
Either way, I suppose it's going to be try a new battery and cross my fingers for two months, because I know how fun the local Sprint store always is. Thanks for the input.

The stay awake when charging not working was changed back in one of the first Gingerbread releases, if I recall correctly. It's unfortunate, because it bugs me too, but that was something I thought Samsung did on purpose in the newer ROMs.
