OK, this is a public service announcement, after having tested stock EE03 with all forms of one click roots, using rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin and GingerBreak, and the prognosis is:
We have come to the end of an era for one click roots. It's over, and the exploits have been patched.
So, for official gingerbread, I predict that the only way to root it, will be to odin/heimdall a rooted kernel and/or cwm. The current trend has been to flash a rooted kernel for other samsung devices.
Of course, there could be some chance that somebody will provide another exploit that'll give us adb rooting capability... but honestly, I doubt it will happen. Hopefully I can be proven wrong.
Anyways, I wanted to give users a heads up, before the inevitable flood of "why isn't this working for me" threads emerge whenever official gingerbread is released.
I had spent many hours getting ready to release a new all in one root and recovery, going so far as to make a new cwm and rooted kernel for it, to only discover the effort will be moot very soon.
Well, at least you can't say that I didn't give a warning.
Edit: just so you know, the cwm 3.1.0.1 thread has been updated as an odin flashable tar, so that clockwork can be applied, no matter what... you can find it in the dev section.
Sounds like the pre-rooted ROMs are OK then.
I think the Bonsai MasterKey unlocker *may* soon work on gingerbread devices. It flashes a recovery image which then let's you flash a rooted rom. We have also made Heimdal available in win32, win64, linux, and osx configurations.
Heimdall will alow you to eb13 and an EC05 modem togetther. I assume it would do a gb modem at same time as well.

maybe I missed something here but I'm running the EE03 build and I'm rooted.

ACS prerooted the Gingerbread leak. He is talking about one-clicking the Gingerbread OTA.
There has never been, and will never be, an exploit free piece of complex software (like an OS). It can't be done. Whether the exploits are found, and how practical they are to use, may push people to do pre-rooted kernels and such, but that doesn't make an on-the-fly rooting impossible, just not easy or appealing.
Like you have said, worst case is we have to wait for someone to post a prerooted version of the stock rom.
What concerns me is that all the backup and recovery options I have found require root to work. I'd like to install the new Gingerbread when it comes out, but I'll have to wait for root one way or the other

Has it been confirmed that EE03's vold is patched against CVE-2011-1823, or is it just that the present GingerBreak doesn't work? They claim in the exploit README that offset/indexes may have to be adjusted on some devices.
So are you saying we should wait before we OTA, when or if the OTA comes?

Well it appears so, sort of. It looks like vold may not be patched with the array bounds check, but libsysutils.so is patched to ignore netlink messages from user processes, so the exploit commands can't be sent to vold. Bummer.
Well that sucks! Hopefully Gingerbreak creators can find a way to exploit around the patch. Otherwise, the Epic is doomed!

I've seen this mentioned in a couple of random posts, but just as a word of warning to any owners of rooted EVOs:
Flashing the forthcoming 2.2/Froyo OTA from Sprint will certainly UN-ROOT your phone! It's anybody's guess how long it will be before one of the devs here finds a new root method, and I have every confidence that it will be a short time before it's done. Nevertheless, remember what happened to the iPhone with 3.1.3. Lots of users lost their jailbreak/unlock PERMANENTLY. I think the standard word of warning to root users still applies: DO NOT flash an un-rooted ROM unless you don't want root access anymore. Wait for either a rooting method or a rooted stock ROM to be released.
I hope this saves a few headaches in the community.

Nice try but it wont people will still take the OTA and come here sobbing tears !
Mad06STi said:
Well, he's got a pretty good educated guess going there.
People who ALREADY have root most likely have the HBOOT and recovery partitions that make getting a froyo+sense+root image on their phones easy. The "hard" part isn't figuring out how to get root into the image. The hard part is figuring out how to gain root on a phone that's stock (and locked down) so that new images can be put on.
The rooting procedure for 1.32 and 1.47 is already known. It is NOT known for new official 2.2 releases. HTC most definitely plugged up the original exploits and a new one has to be found, and that most definitely will take longer than just cooking up the rom.
I'm with PikkonX on this. You're better off rooting your 1.32/1.47 phones and waiting significantly less time for a prerooted official froyo rom than you are taking the OTA, locking your phone down, and waiting for a clever dev to locate an exploit. Finding the exploit is the unknown here.

^ my thoughts from the "Froyo Tomorrow?" thread.
Either way I'm sure you'll get root eventually. But it breaks down into two scenarios:
1) Wait on OTA 2.2 for an unknown time (probably timescale of days) and get a 2.2+root rom.
2) Get OTA 2.2 as soon as it drops, probably enjoy it, but live without root for an unknown (possibly long) time.

Exactly. But I guess you said it more concisely.
Do the OTA updates replace a recovery image? I've been on tmo until now and never accepted an OTA update from them, so I honestly don't know.
If they dont, I'd assume it'd be pretty safe, or pretty quick to get root/su back, wouldnt it?
I just hope they update the PRI so that you can flash it over a full-rooted phone and Sprint will never know the difference.
OTA 1.47 replaced just about everything, including hboot and recovery.

No we didn't, the JB for 3.1.3 was released when iOS4 came out. They just didn't want to risk Apple closing up the hole with 4. (Nitpicking, I know.. but thought I'd mention that.)
Actually I may be wrong. The original OTA was pretty small, I'm basing my opinion on a PC36IMG
file I have here that has stock hboot and recovery images. Who knows where I actually got it from, though.

Well, from what I've gathered, it generally takes less time to see a fully rooted stock rom than an actual process to root that said rom altogether. If people could just wait for the rooted rom they'd save themselves much heartache.
But of course, tomorrow we'll see millions of threads about how they lost their root and how they didn't know this would happen and how unrevoked doesn't work for them and blah blah blah. Oh well, sucks for them.
Btw- What does apple, the iPhone, and ios4 have to do with froyo and the evo? There are absolutely no connections between them.
It is going to be hard to resist the temptation of updating but I'll heed your advice and hold on DC 323 until a rooted ROM is made available.
There I said it.
I get the best of both worlds.
I'll stick to my CM6 on my Evo till a rooted stock comes out but my wife won't let me root her Evo........so I'll update it as soon as it comes out and play with hers till I get a rooted version on mine.

Posted this in another thread, posting it here as well just in case.
So, i'm not very good with all this rooting crap, but just so i could get a few apps working(wireless tether), i used unrevoked 3, and as far as i know, you can't really use any of the good roms with it. Anyways, i could care less about rom's, i just want to be able to use apps like wireless tether(oh well if the update breaks it), or shootme(i take a lot of screenshots :X), how does this affect me? I mean, what do i do if i update and can't root again, but at the same time can't use a 2.2 rom because i have the lazy mans root method? Any insight would be great, all this has me fairly worried .

Epic truth!
For those among us who aren't terribly comfortable using the RageAgainstTheCage method to root this sucker there is an alternate method! This method DOES however require some familiarity with Odin, so if you aren't cool with that or if you have zero experience using key combinations or flashing I wouldn't recommend this.
Things you'll need:
JI6 Kernel
http://www.multiupload.com/FEJ1YHMM2I
JF6 Kernel
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//test/kernel-captivate-stock.tar.md5
Root via update.zip
http://www.multiupload.com/02RXSWORVC
And Odin of course (NOT THE ONE CLICK DOWNLOADER)!
http://www.multiupload.com/DLS7TWUVPY
1. Place the update.zip on your internal SD card.
2. Power down your phone
3. Boot into download mode and set up with Odin
4. Place the JF6 kernel into the PDA slot, and uncheck auto reboot, hit start
5. Once Odin has finished, remove your battery and close Odin.
5.5 Also remove the USB cable!
6. Put your battery back in, press and hold both volume buttons, and power on
7. You SHOULD be in stock recovery now, select "Reinstall Packages" the root update.zip should run.
8. As soon as the phone attempts to reboot, remove the battery, start Odin, use key combos to get back into Odin
9. Flash the JI6 kernel back to the phone
10. Profit!

anyways...like always zilch pulls through! nice job man
The reason you have to switch, is that the JI6 kernel enforces Signature Verification on update.zip packages, so using the root zip package fails horribly. However JF6 does not share the same opinions on unsafe update packages and will eagerly gobble up whatever you feed it

Actually credit goes to designgears for grabbing the kernel first, he beat me to root by about 5 minutes haha, I did however repack it for flashing myself =P But if you're interested in how to pull it, you need root first obviously, then from adb shell:
Code:
cat /dev/block/bml7 > /sdcard/zImage
Then you just have to pack it up properly to be "Odin friendly"
This is the stock source DG has for Cog4.

Yeah the recent screenshots in the cog forum are from this. After DG's modding, of course. Not really sure if it is any different than the KB1 already posted in the dev forum but the build date is newer.
How to flash? With odin3? Please post, I'll let my cappy be a guinea pig!
I really don't have a clue how to flash it myself but I invite anyone who does know to post instructions or link the thread here that has all the steps.
This requires ODIN3 to flash.
I downloaded both this and the 2/1/11 version of the file from Dev forum. Uncompressed the zip and the firmware rar file are bit-to-bit identical. So, there is no difference between this and the ones posted in dev forum. All the files inside the rar are timestamped at 1/31/2011 with the exception of cache.rfs which is 2/7/2011 (on both versions).
I've downloaded both this file and the one chainfire linked to; they are identical (and both have homeBinary.tar files dated Feb 7) - and no, I have not flashed either... waiting for reports from others first about the ROM.
Do I need a .pit file to flash with odin3?

So is this even the official 2.2 we've been waiting for? I mean, if they have it done since Feb 7, why aren't they releasing it? And why would it be 2.2 when the Epic just got 2.2.1 today?

No. Only the .tar in the PDA slot.
Why even bother with 2.2 when there are 2.2.1 roms out that are flawless on the captivate.

I flashed the 2-1 version. Ran into partitioning problems going straight from my Andromeda install. Installed JH2 found here with Odin3 1.81 and used a 512.pit with partition checked then installed KB1 with no pit (pit is only used for partitioning). Then I rooted with Super One-Click and installed the no-verification 3e recovery from here.
It's working, but I just did this to make sure I had working steps so I could help a friend. I'll be going back to Andromeda after playing with this for a while.

The reason to bother with this is every other ROM has given me horrible issues with the phone losing all connection to the cell tower at a random time. The WiFi stays connected, but instead of the signal bars, I get a no connection icon, and I can't use the phone until I reboot it. The pure i897 setup has never had this issue, and it went away when I flashed back the last pure i897 ROM (Cogition 2.3B8).
Related to this same issue is the horrendous drop in battery when the phone loses the connection and constantly searches for it. I've never had it lose much juice when on standby when I had it on an i897 ROM. When using one of these frankenstein ROMs based on other hardware, I would sometimes find my phone almost dead in the morning with connection having been lost sometime at night.
I also hate he fact that none of the other ROMs have figured out how to really use the hardware noise cancellation audience chip we have on our i897. I can't really tell the difference between it being used versus a software solution from the other ROMs, but if I have the chip, by golly I want it utilized.
Going back to 2.2 for 2.2.1 doesn't bother me quite as much as losing key phone functionality and battery life. The phone was a bit snappier on 2.2.1 based perception, and HSUPA looked good in Speedtest results, but in real life usage the 2.2 ROM feels just as nice to use. Inject voodoo lagfix, and it would be a fine daily driver, just like JI6 was many moons ago.
I've flashed this one with odin3, seems to work ok. You have to root again after flash.

So is this even the official 2.2 we've been waiting for? I mean, if they have it done since Feb 7, why aren't they releasing it? And why would it be 2.2 when the Epic just got 2.2.1 today?

AT&T needs couple weeks or even months to fully test the ROM before it can be released. So, it seems anywhere from now to next month, this ROM will be released publically if it is the official ROM. God forbid, if critical issues are found and ROM needs to be rebuild, we have to wait even longer.

No, just wait for the OTA to come out.
What Vache posted is not meant for people who do not understand how to fix whatever they may break.
I to believe . well with a bit more details. Trying to say this nicely as humanly possibly.. IF you have read the forum thread in its entirety you might should not Install any rom .Give this a few days for all the fuss to calm down and see how it really runs before you make the leap.
Be patient and it will be all worked out on the safety and someone will put up a NOOOBIE STEP BY STEP INSTALL For this rom. Just as all the others in the past..
good luck and Happy Please waiting
Erica.

Yes you can !
You can install the "original version" of this ROM from your recovery if (and only if) you root your tablet and install Amon-Ra recovery on it.
Renee: Now that we know that it's possible to go back to Honeycomb from this ROM, you could maybe test it and give your impression and your opinion?

I will over the weekend . I have a a doc apt and would be lost there without my tablet. I know and yes i know how and have backups BUT I have flashed my tab many many times and not ONCE Come close to bricking it.. WHY Because i wait watch and Learn..
Thank you all. but I do not know if I install this rom now, I'll wait a little longer for a more stable version or the official version in April.
Wise decision, alexmd
But this Rom is the one that will be sent by OTA, I believe... most probably before April. Some people working for Acer have announced that the OTA must begin in a very short time now.

THIS LEAKED ROM IS FOR DEVELOPMENT
•Give the developers time to take this leaked ROM and make a stable release.
•Currently there is no version that keeps full Root and Recovery. A500 tablets will bootloop flashing the CWM version.
•A501 users can flash the CWM version but there is no 3G.
•A500 users can flash the stock ROM, but there is no Root and no way to install Recovery. Going back to 3.2.1 is not verified.
PATIENCE PLEASE, while this is being worked on.
I am willing to bet within a week or so we will start seeing ICS Roms that can be flashed with either Acer Recovery, CWM or RA.

This is not the same rom that will come thru OTA.. Acer on there website has said the acer a500 WILL Receive the same Added app updates the new Acer lock screen as well as the Acer ring. This leaked rom has none of them. This is the reason people are saying that the leaked rom is a Alpha build. and will Likely have issues and compatibility issues
I don't understand what you mean, Renee
There is a new lock screen ring (a bit modified) on this leak rom.
Anyway, you can be right but, for me, there is no need to change anything on this Rom. .. The only thing to change now to be close to perfection, is these two crappy microphones...

I believe she is talking about the "acer ring", which is some overlay that appears when you put 5 fingers on the screen in a ring shape.
Sent from my tomato filled Evo
There should be a ring lock screen that has the ability to run some apps without unlocking. by draging it to that app.. also a more complex one built into the UI
as well as some new acer apps that nobody has mentioned.. If you go to acer.com and find there latest news it talks about these things..
but i could be wrong. Im still waiting a few more days to see what comes about this boot loader unlock commands now available..
Its all good who knows at this point
I flashed the stock one, everything works fine. amazing in fact. the cameras are far better! especially with all the new camera features. this version is super stable, not sure what everyone is freaking out about. I havent had anything force close or any problems.

i know. but i don't need it. I'm aware some people might, but having no root doesn't mean its not stable. Ive seen a bunch of posts where people keep saying its for developers only and not stable. I'm just trying to say that its super stable. IF you don't need root, just flash the stock one. It far surpasses any custom 3.2 roms out there. even if i never get another update, i'll be happy.

quoted for truth.
i always ran a rooted stock 3.2.1 anyway, so this ICS build (i could care less about the "acer ring". in fact i'd prefer to not have it) with the root method laid out in the official thread works perfectly for me.
i can use my rooted apps and i can delete bloatware and install system apps by mounting /system as /dev/tmpdir

Just a note on what telemike said, I've talked to quite a few people who used KJY's method to revert.
So, not 100% no touchie. lol.
I only have one more question, the camera is working? and I can flash it in Revery mod my stock rom 3.2.1 unroot?
Based off of my work in #twrp on irc.freenode.net documented at

Team Win Recovery Project 2.1 for the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate
THIS IS AN ALPHA RELEASE
Install at your own risk! Be prepared by making a backup before installing and being prepared with Heimdall or Odin in case something goes wrong!

This has been one crazy week. I never imagioned going from TWRP2 as impossible on samsung devices, to a one click zip so fast.
Simply flash the zip below, you will have the exact same kernel as before, except with TWRP recovery magically replacing cwm.
This means that this can be flashed on CM7,CM9,AOKP,Gummy,CNA,etc regardless of whether you are using the stock kernel, glitch kernel, or anything else.
Note: You must be rooted and/or have a custom recovery already installed!
Disclaimer: Team Win strives to provide a quality product. However, it is your decision to install our software on your device. Team Win takes no responsibility for any damage that may occur from installing or using twrp.
Features:
Touch based recovery
Flash zips
Backup / restore roms
wipe cache,dalvik,/data
Misc.
Known Issues:
No usb support (adb, mount usb storage)
No /datadata support (can't backup or wipe app data)
reboot recovery broken (just reboots normally)
Report Problems:
I know there are a lot of problems as this is an ALPHA release.
However, it is still usable as a recovery, and a public release allows me to find and diagnose more problems.
So if you have a problem that has not been mentioned, post about it with a log, so that I may begin fixing it.
goto Advanced->Copy Log to SDcard
then upload /sdcard/recovery.log
Download: http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/captivatemtd
I hope the bugs will get ironed out, so this can become the best recovery for us captvate users (and next other SGS devices).
Enjoy!
Looks very promising. Will try out in the next day or so.
Thanks
you are evolutionary success, act like it

I realize. I have been working on this for some time. I hang out in #glichbeta IRC and contribute to their dev work... So they have had access to this for a while, and have started integrating it into the glitch kernel, which is also in AOKP.
Go ahead and ask sixstringsg. They are my prebuilts I shared.
Anyways, this has a few advantages. Ex: you can still run stock cwm, then flash this over your kernel to test it out. Instead of being 'forced' into using something before it is perfected.
So far the only problems I find are that b34 essentials is only half way flashing. TWRP doesn't like the morphing script. And butter cream does not work at all with TWRP.

They do. It's called, "If you can't read the OP, one-Click your way back to stock because you're not ready for custom ROMS"
You know what? I think ima put that in my sig lol.
Though we should probably try to make our way back on topic. I mean, TWRP with any kernel? Awesomesauce.

It is stable enough for me. If you don't like it you can reflash a different kernel to get CWM back.

I have tried it. I updraded AOKP, flashed gapps, flashed glitch kernel. Made a backup, restored a backup - all fine.
However, as with every one else, I encourage you to give it a shot. The more testers, the better.
I am loving this recovery. Great job. Keep up the great work. Been waiting for this to come to the captivate.
