VOIP in stock firmware XEU 2.3.3 - Galaxy S I9000 General

Please report if you have a VOIP account setup in the menu Settings -> Call settings
I dont have it on a Kies updated stock firmware release (updated from stock froyo to stock gingerbread 2.3.3 (gingerbread.xxjvo). Only change i made was csc change from from xen to xeu).Or does it come only on 2.3.4 ? I am confused. Any help is welcome. I dont want to use mods, so plz no recommendations to firmware mods.

The SIP option is NOT welcome by carriers, so Samsung hidden this option but you can put it back with some custom ROM.

just modify the framework yourself and add a little xml and you are done

I am missing this, too. But what is the drawback of using apps like
Sipdroid or similars compared to the built-in SIP functionality? I have seen it on my wife's HTC but found it rather uncomfortable to deliberately select a SIP call when usually using normal phone calls..
Cheers, J

I got the point.
Network providers never been too clever in history. Why care how people use their phone ? They should care how to bill it and be lucky to get money for it.
Somebody really think its getting less ? I mean the VOIP traffic ? I not ...
@t-mobile
Just make a plan and let me pay for voip traffic you XXX XXX (my emotions blanked out)
Make your homework and get the packet billing solution up.
@Brotuck
Bedankt. I am not so lucky with custom roms. I just want to use what our system offers.
@jnbch
My experiance with sipdroid was not that good. The voice quality at 3g in good coverige are was bad. On the other side i used skype (which i really highly dislike) also with good coverige 3g network and the voice quality was very good. I know they use another technology but my hope was that i get a good quality voip through native implemented in android

[Q] How to remove the phone bits from my tab?

As I have been flashing ROMs I've noticed many come with the Phone.apk. My Tab is a tablet, and not a phone so I want to remove it all. But when I tried to through adb it renders my data service useless. So would someone please tell me exactly how this is done?
Strange that you want to delete it
You could take a custom launcher and hide it from the drawer.

I don't see how.. I have a phone to make calls from. I have a tablet for web browsing.
I'm not wanting to hide it though. I want to remove it.
As far as I know the only way to fully remove the dialer functionality would be to cook your own rom without it. The only other thing I can think of is maybe taking the phone.apk from a standard tmo build and using that (I am fairly sure the default build still has a phone.apk as to my knowledge it is needed for radio services to function). Having said that I use mine as a phone so not gonna mess around to test it myself and my apologies if it doesn't/wont work. As a side note phone.apk is less then 4mb not sure why it would be a huge concern.

My contacts app has the dialer in it. And on some ROMs I get a voicemail notification. I suppose I could find a contacts apk without it. But if I'm going through all that I might as well get rid of the whole thing. I just don't see the reason behind needing to use a tablet as a phone, you know?

The "simple" solution would be to go back to your stock ROM, but that's likely not really an acceptable solution as the performance of the stock ROMs tends to be pretty poor in comparison to the later development builds.
So, you are likely to be left with removing or replacing certain components from your desired ROM with the stock TMo variants (as has been previously mentioned) on a trial and error basis to determine what works and what does not. It's doubtful that you'll find anyone who can tell you *exactly* what you want to do, because it seems that most US Tabs users are looking to re-enable the phone functionality that was artificially crippled by the US carriers.
I seldom use my Tabs phone functionality, but I have used it (makes a great speakerphone for conference calls!), and I would always rather have more functionality than less.

Dave

[Q] Noob here. Few questions.

Hello all,
I just got my tab about a week ago and set it up as a a SIP phone to replace my cell phone. All if working great except that I have a US Tmob tab and it seems like it only supports a2dp. I would very much like to modify my tab and I'm in the process of learning all that needs to be learned but I have a couple quick questions.
If I use a custom rom/kernel (like modaco), will I have uncrippled bluetooth functionality (ie. connecting to mono BT headsets)?
I wish to convert my tabs file system over to ext4 (might as well) but in case I ever have to return it for warranty purposes, can I revert it back to stock (or close enough) so they won't notice?
Lastly, when changing the mod and fw, do all my installed apps gets wiped out?
Sorry if some of this has been covered before but I've spent literally hours looking through these forums and haven't found a concrete answer (mainly to my first question).
Ok bluetooth handsfree - will work only if the kernel you install adds uncrippled bt like boushh is working on for vzw tab and bt hid services
When installing roms you are always instructed to do a full wipe. Trust me listen to all instructions given. Check out titanium backup for root in the market. This will restore your apps after a full wipe.

Thanks for the info. I took the plunge and installed Overcome 1.20. Aside from a small nuisance, all went smoothly.
Now I can use my BT headset with my SIP phone calls! Also, the tab is running very smoothly and I have a new button to press on my lock screen in the event of an emergency .
Thanks!
pwrsrc, im curious as to what app you use to make your sip calls as I cannot find a good one! Thanks

I am using csipsimple. It has a built in dialer with access to your contacts and it does touch tones (for some reason sipdroid's wouldn't register).
If you do use it, make sure to set it to stay active in the BG. It says it uses more battery but I haven't noticed any real difference.
How would you rate the quality? My current set up is verizon on 3g, using sipgate as my sip service and nimbuzz to dial out. I used to use csipsimple for a while, but people I talked to said the quality is complete crap (but maybe it's the sipgate service?)

Line 2 working on rooted motorola xoom

Hey there. I just wanted to let everyone know that I have Line2 working on my rooted Motorola Xoom. It works on 3G and I am making calls and texting. It requires another Android phone that can download Line2 and App Saver to package the .apk file, but viola, it works!
Props nice find
Line2 apk
Hey radiogodd30. Do you happen to still have the apk file? The Xoom is the only android device I have a this time so I am unable to download it from the ap store.

Looks all but perfect. I'll probably wait around for an official Android 3.x supported release, but it's good to see that something like this works. I'm sure I'll subscribe once that's the case.
Works on my wi-fi zoom too, in case anyone is wondering.
Of course you have to be around a wi-fi hotspot to make/receive calls, but I'm pretty much ALWAYS around a wi-fi hotspot, so it's a viable option for me.
On a side note, this is COOL! Making calls from a xoom!
radiogodd30 is awsome
That line2 apk worked perfectly. I am now using line2 on my xoom. Thank you
Its cool and all, but not something I'd pay monthly for. I wish text free would update their app.
I use Line2 on my Thunderbolt, ipad2 and zoom. Find that it works best on IOS devices.

correction on perfectly
My xoom is only working for wifi. the dialing section of the settings tab is not there. I think it is because the app thinks I am a non phone tablet so doesn't need the option. I am guessing on that. I haven't found the configuration files that I hope exist on the xoom to make that change manually.
I know found tjat groove ip is a better solution to make or receive calls using Google voice so no monthly fees just the one time free of 3.99 to buy the app that's ot

Could be, but with line2 I get a ring even when my screen is sleeping and texting built in so it works like the cell phone I am trying to replace.
Anyone happen to know where settings are kept for line2 on the phone? apparently xoom is not at the top of the list of devices they are moving to support so tech support was not really helpful. from the conversations, it sounds like the app thinks my device is wifi only so does not show the dialing (use 3g/4g) section on the settings tab. I am assuming that there is only one app that is hiding that part of the configuration instead of maintaining two versions. IF that is true, there is probably a 'don't use 3g/4g' setting stored on my phone wherever they keep the configuration info.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE RE-UPLOAD THE OLDER LINE2.APK file. I had to reset my Xoom and lost it and the newer one DOES NOT allow you to make calls on the XOOM!

its not working
Xoom speaker volume
I've got the 1.0.5 version, but am having speaker issues. It will work fine for a week or two then it will be super quiet. without any specific action that i can identify, it starts working again. Then there is the no phone on my 3g connection. only wi-fi.
Does anyone know what the 1.0.8 version fixed? And does it effect the Xoom.
And of course the obligatory demand for the apk to be posted. Does anyone have it. and Thanks in advance.
Hi
the link os not working please can send a new link2.apk

Do all/most of the custom roms have the dialer enabled?

I want to use the built-in dialer for sip, which is inaccessible in stock. part of the reason I want this is I want to use bluetooth and still haven't found a voip/sip app that supports bluetooth. Others say grooveip works fine, but I'm Canadian so no use.
Or is there an easy method of enabling in stock now? I read before of some method where you had to change the dpi and do some other things and then add your sip credentials and then modify the dpi back.
But I'm curious to know if most custom roms have it enabled.
I'd also be interested getting the stock dialer for sip. Preferably in Stock rom.
do you mean the phone.apk ?

Thanks, but the thing is phone.apk is already there, part of the Android system, it's just disabled somehow. And not the typical way that can be unfrozen.

This post describes the method of enabling the sip dialer. A little clunky but doesn't sound too hard, haven't tried it yet though. He mentions bluetooth is a little shaky which is disappointing. Does bluetooth just suck in general with android or what?
But anyone who is running a custom rom, can you tell me if the dialer is enabled, if so, what are you running?

4.2 has really irked me and I'm looking again at installing a custom rom, probably cyanogen as that's what I ran on my old nook color.
So can someone running cyanogen or any custom rom tell me if the dialer is enabled?
I've ran lots of custom roms and haven't seen a dialer once. We've never had 3G.

Can you not download Go Contacts. This comes with a dialer. I've used this successfully to make and receive phone calls on the Nexus 7 in conjunction with tablet talk and a Bluetooth headphone.

Thank you for answering! Now at least I know custom roms don't have it, but it's disappointing. You mention we don't have 3g I know that, and that's probably the logic why google disables it. But carriers also disable things like that to prevent voip usage, so it's kind of irrating, and surprising that custom roms wouldn't enable it either. Especially since I know it was there on cm7 on my nook which didn't even have a mic. I put in my sip creditentials in cm7 just to test a call and it worked fine, but again obviously it had no mic. I thought oh well, next tablet. Well now I have the next tablet and I was somewhat hoping google wouldn't do what the carriers typically do. I think it also avoids confusion because people think it's a phone as well, but why not at least have a developer option to enable sip dialing or something.
I may request on the cyanogen mod forrums if they could please enable it.

Carrier removed Phone!

Hello,
I bought a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GT-P5100, and from some reason, the carrier I bought it from, installed their own ROM and removed the Phone function from the tablet and I can't dial, only use the internet for browsing, so I was wondering, is there a way to bring the phone function back?
Thanks !

Good luck

I don't think it's only the wifi model because I have a SIM card in it already and I'm using the network mobile. But maybe there is a model with SIM but without Phone?

because of some tax issues, some carriers remove the phone option, when the device has cellular phone calls options, it a "phone" and not a "media device" or "computer tab" and the amount of the tax that the carrier (and you) need to pay goes higher, so they remove it to keep the price fair and not to start **** with the government office that in-charge on the mobile phones.
you always have the option to install stock rom with the phone option, it WILL damage your warranty and its on your own risk.
good luck!

Thanks for making it clear! I know I'm a bit late  but I forgot about it.
In order to install stock rom you have to root it first right? is there a guide to do the whole process? (rooting + installing stock rom on galaxy tab 2 10.1?)

or, you could activate google voice, get issued a free phone number
or, you could activate google voice, get issued a free phone number, thats what I did on my wifi only model, it would use your data plan instead, and works great, that way you could give your google number to all the gumbahs and your real number to the real folks in your world. Their are a number of apps that you can use and they work seemlessly with your native app and I had great conversations on voip with no noticeable lag.
Their are a number of 3rd party apps that intergrate with google voice, sign up for the service first, I made a deposit on it years ago and make and take calls on it, no problem, with no charges. If they leave v/m the service transcribes the voice mail and sends it to me via email, which is very nice option, along with spam/call block type features it beats the hell out of what the LEC's offer.

Google gives me a phone number and I will be able to call other phones? or it is more like Skype or Viber - that I can call to people with Skype or Viber only? will the people I call to need to pay something?
**Edit : I searched for "Google Voice" in Play Store but I didnt find it, I think it's not available in my country.
I guess I will need to root and install stock rom, is there a guide for doing it on Galaxy Tab 2 10.1?
So is it possible to make VoIP calls on a wifi only model? Like with GVoice over an internet connection? Or is there a better app?
