What is the point of this?
The idea of this is to convince htc to unlock the bootloaders and disable the NAND protection on their phones
Why should I support this?
Unlocking the bootloader and disabling the NAND protection will allow users to keep their phones up to date using custom roms such as CM7. Take the htc wildfire for example. In december 2010, HTC released a 2.2 update for the wildfire. However, hidden in this update was a new bootloader which could not (and still can not as of the 15th may 2011) be modified. It is unlikely that HTC will release another update for this phone, meaning that users are going to be stuck on this rom. The reason? So HTC can sell new phones. However what this is doing is putting users off buying HTC's devices since rival companies have announced that the users can easily unlock the bootloaders on their devices.

HTC officially dissolves locked bootloader policy
By Sean Hollister posted May 26th 2011 9:25PM Breaking News
The homebrew community may mourn HTC's Thunderbolt, Incredible S, Sensation and EVO 3D, but the company's controversial policy of locking bootloaders is no more. Following a tease yesterday, HTC CEO Peter Chou has decreed from on high -- namely, HTC's Facebook page -- that future devices will be open.
There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience.
We're holding out hope that this policy will also be retroactive, but this is very welcome news regardless. Ball's in your court, Motorola.

Hallo! i have heard allot of rumours that legend won't be getting froyo
is it true?
like you said they are rumours.
just wait. think there will soon be more info from htc when the first 2.2 phones are released.
the rumours are indeed very iffy
I honestly just posted an entire rant last night about this, allow me to quote myself...
kylecore said:
Well I've heard multiple times before this that customer service reps from htc have also confirmed the update to froyo for the legend. The most recent being an email from a customer service rep stating that the user fear not about his flash playing troubles because android 2.2 and incidentally flash 10.1 would be released for the htc legend within the next 2 weeks.
Follow this up by the recent release of flash 10.1 for android 2.2 and the release of the android 2.2 source code being released today the statement of "within the next 2 weeks" seem to be exactly what is happening. Not only is android 2.2 pretty much here but will be available sooner rather then later. To add further flame to the fire htc repeatedly said android 2.2 will be supported by almost all 2010 devices and with the desire being more widely available and more powerful it is more likely to be put in with definite android 2.2 compatible even though the desire and legend get almost always get updates at the same time.
The most likely reason the statement was pulled? Well it must simply be due to google not publishing the source code yet, thus letting people essentially know froyo is ready.
Htc most certainly can't pull the plug on 2.2 before google itself does. But! Now that it has published final froyo source code it is 99.9% done and is most likely waiting to be uploaded to the server.
My uneducated guess is that we'll see froyo on the legend by mid july at the latest.
Also not sure if anyone thought of this, but bell (and indirectly virgin mobile canada) are not stupid companies. They are introducing a new android phone and thus throwing massive amounts of ad $ and marketing into it, from both bell/virgin AND htc itself. Remember this is virgins FIRST android set and bells 4th or 5th, they would most likely have talked to htc to make sure the device is upgradeable to the newest android. They just started selling it, they aren't going to allow it to be out dated within the month its released! If the did it would be a waste on advertising and a waste of introducing a new phone.
That's just my 2 cents, but it seems very logical to me, how about you?

Soo yeah that's my 2 cents, but it seems reasonable if you ask me.
Aaaand lastly, there's a guy currently working on porting froyo over and you can follow it at this thread in the forum, here's the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709078
Just to throw some fuel in the fire, check out this link
The Flash Player 10.1 can be availed as a final production release for smartphones and tablets as soon as users can upgrade to Android 2.2 “Froyo”. Handsets which are anticipated to support “Froyo” and Flash Player 10.1 include Google Nexus One, HTC Evo, HTC Desire, HTC Incredible, Dell Streak, Samsung Galaxy S, DROID by Motorola, Motorola Milestone and more.

Adobe didn't state HTC Legend on their supported devices list...could this mean no 2.2 for Legend? or Is HTC dumbing down 2.2 for Legend as they did with 2.1?
If 2.2 is dumbed down for Legend, it better have WiFi hotspot as a stock 2.2 rom would have, or I am going to be one pissed off long legged puerto rican!
I've seen lots of information flying around on Engadget and the like about HTC 2.2 updates forthcoming, but I have yet to see anything at all about the Aria.
Does anyone have any idea if HTC / AT&T intend to update the Aria to 2.2? Of course I know if they don't, we have some guys working hard on unofficial versions. Just would like to know if we'll get anything official...
HTC has stated they're working on it, and they "hope to have it done by christmas" but I wouldn't hold my breath for it to get thru HTC and AT&T for the Aria by then. Last I can remember, the HTC Wildfire was listed as getting the update and the Aria is very similar to said device. I also recall hearing that HTC said all the devices released past a certain point this year (Aria falls within this range) will be getting 2.2. I'm sure the Aria will get it, but again, I wouldn't hold my breath, CM6 will most likely be in full functioning order before official Froyo
Will definitely be trying out CM6 as soon as it gets in a little more working order! Definitely not holding my breath on HTC + AT&T...especially not the AT&T part of that equation.
Nothing official about the Aria, but HTC Evo is getting some official 2.2 Froyo loving tomorrow.
Maybe with that, we can hope for an earlier release for the Aria.
I wont hold my breath, the Motorola Back flip have been out for how long and its still on the launch firmware. ATT will take their sweet time when HTC releases it to them, best chance is that someone here gets their hand on is and bakes a 2.2 with HTC Sense rom for Aria users to flash with.

Considering how the Backflip went, this isn't surprising. Why could a company back a device that isn't doing much on it's own already?
Might be coming sooner than some of you expect. HTC seems to be getting serious about froyo

Granted we'll have to deal with att.
I think we will see one, but it will be a pain to install. The phone, for whatever reason, cannot accepted over-the-air (OTA) updates... there's no option in the settings to see if there is an update like most other android phones. HTC has said you will need to use HTC sync to upgrade. (Though I'm sure many of the people here at xda will have no problem loading the ROM via Sync or other ways, for regular users this could be a pain.)
Thought I'd share. I found this bit of info on the htc support forums in the aria section.

Whne there is an update for the Aria-it will have to be loaded from a PC to your device. The good news is that after the first update for the Aria, Firmware Over The Air will be implemented so that any subsequent updates will arrive to your device over the Air once their are released. Currently, there are no updates for the Aria OS-they are in the works.
So it is quite possible we may be getting froyo because she said it's "in the works." One of the other HTC forum moderators said it may take a while because it will be "tested and approved" by att and that we'll need to update it via sync.
So from what I understand, she said after the first update, there will be more updates released OTA. Froyo is gonna be a sync update so when she says any subsequent updates will arrive, does that mean she's hinting we'll be getting updates past froyo? Maybe we'll be able to get 3.0 ;P I mean what other updates will there be? lol
I'd LOVE to get 3.0, but I'll be happy with 2.2.
There is a post at Unwired review (can't post link until my account is verified.. not sure if there is a way to 'request' to be verified), but it's from Unwired Review. Just google "Android 3 Gingerbread."
But then there was an update to the post:
Update: I posted an update to this post, where I address Dan Morrill’s tweet, and do some corrections/clarifications regarding the upcoming Android update number issues, “minimum” specs – thay are actually only “recommended”, and the the split between high end Android 3 – low end Android 2.2 devices – it’s not an official Google policy, but it is happening nonetheless.

So could we get it? Yes. And I think with the speed htc is pushing out the updates, it's not a question for them of "do we update the aria," it's the same question for many of their phones, since so many htc android phones are similiar inside and out.
Froyo for the Aria is something I have been looking forward to for a while now, and seeing it any later than October would be a huge letdown.

OK, this question is ought to show up at some point:
Nexus One will be getting Gingerbread over the next few days - What about DHD?
I know it typically takes HTC a good few month to adapt new version of andriod, but for a sparkling new flagship device to have an obsolete OS before its publicly available in large quantity, its a bit silly.
It should be, and there should be no reason why it shouldn't
HTC is usually the one that updates most of their phones early compared to Sony Ericsson or Samsung
At a wild guess it will be Q1 next year.
At any rate there is nothing wrong with the DHD shipping os. If gingerbread will bring some new features then all good but since I don't have those features now I don't miss them
I have not noticed any bugs, instability, or lag in the DHD either.
I guess what I'm saying is that I'm happy to wait. After using sense ui I find AOSP android to be a little too bland for my tastes, so I certainly won't be switching back to my Nexus One as my daily phone just because of Gingerbread.
Just read in a couple of places that Htc people have confirmed that the Desire HD is going to be updated with gingerbread. Just mailed them asking for an exact date though i think they will provide me with a very vague answer.....just hoping the update comes sooner than i think it is going to...

Android v2.3 Gingerbread Heading To The HTC EVO 4G http://skattertech.com/2011/03/android-v2-3-gingerbread-heading-to-the-htc-evo-4g/

"The catch? HTC does not intend to push out the update until at least one flagship smart phone sporting Google’s new OS reaches store shelves. This is to ensure that customers do not hold back from purchasing newly announced devices. Once at least one Gingerbread smart phone reaches consumers, HTC will release the upgrade for their older Android models."
So the Evo 3D will be announced this week ... if it follows the EVO schedule it will hit the shelves in June ... meaning EVO won't seen an update until July ... maybe august? Which will be _after_ Icecream gets released.
So it's good news that HTC will give us GB the same time CM gives us Icecream, why exactly?

Why you ask. Because people complain that HTC doesn't care about older phones and the reason is because they want us to buy the new phones. So now they will meet us in the middle. They will release the next phone and let people buy the latest and greatest and when the rush is over the people keeping the EVO will get an update. Win for everyone.

Win for everyone would be if HTC/Sprint continued to tighten this relationship started with Google today and start pushing updates out in a timely manner and not one full rev behind.
Even if i buy a crappy PC from Dell I don't need to wait on them to update my Windows 7 to the latest SP.
This update model has to stop. HTC should be supplying a mono-kernel and that's it. Just the latest core drivers. Everything else I should be getting OTA right from Google and if Sprint wants to throw in an apk or two they can. No I wont pretend this is somehow a win when I have to read weekly announcements of apps being pulled from the market because of exploits that were "fixed in 2.3" while the entire non-hacking community still sits on 2.2. It's borderline irresponsible when you consider the fees being payed.
whoa getting a little heated in here, say what you will but I just cant wait for a new mik rom based on this update!

Nope. But with new versions of the os you very we'll might have to wait on them for drivers.
This doesn't make much sense. The only people who actually care, or even know what the hell gingerbread is, are nerds like us. What average consumer who already owns the HTC Evo is going to purchase a new phone JUST to have gingerbread? And what self-respecting nerd would not just root their phone and run CM7 (or one of the MANY roms with GB) as opposed to buying a whole new phone, JUST for gingerbread? And if HTC didn't want us to have GB before a new flagship device was released with GB, why didn't they lock the bootloader like motorola?
I suspect whoever divulged this information didn't know what they were talking about. And if this information is true, HTC and all the other phone manufacturers need to pull their heads out of their asses and strengthen the ANDROID brand, their own individual phone brands. I honestly don't give a **** if my phone is HTC or moto or samsung, as long as it's open and runs android (hence me owning an HTC right now, the only manufacturer who doesn't seem to mind mods).
I messaged motorola yesterday and I received this response
"Hi Jack, I refer you to our recent statement re. Bootloader: Motorola will enable an unlockable/relockable bootloader, currently found on MOTOROLA XOOM, in future software releases where carrier and operator partners will allow it. We understand... the operator requirement for security to the end user, and will look to strike a balance with the need to support developer communities in using these products as a development platform. It is our intention to include the unlockable/relockable bootloader in software releases starting in late 2011.
In the meantime, Motorola provides a number of resources to developers to foster the ecosystem including tools and access to devices for developers at http://developer.motorola.com"
What do you think?
Old news .. they say that since a week.. i personally doubt it... its just that i dont believe motorola.. also "if carrier allows it" and "in future software releases".. who knows if the Milestone2 ever gets an update.. and the carrier thing.. they could use it as a backdoor

I replied asking about the unlocked phones which can't really come under "carrier allowance" so i dno...
I think they will unlock bootloaders only on new phones, no old.
That would be pretty lame from them to drop out not-so-old Milestone 2 from getting such an update. What is even more lame is the estimated time such update would come out...
