My touchpad scrolling used to be an inverted scroll, which I really liked! However once I did the update it has changed to be like on a normal laptop. Can it be changed back???
Thanks, Daniel

Bump again, any ideas?
You can change it back, if you do not mind the circle mouse pointer. If you change you pointer back to Settings->Language & input->Touchpad pointer style to gesture mode then you will go back to the inverted scroll.
I have choosen to live with the circle pointer to get the inverted scrolling. But, I would like to have the inverted scroll along with the mouse cursor mode. Any ideas anybody. So far I am not rooted. but probably would not mind rooting it.

You'll most definitely need root to change it, but it should be pretty easy then. If asus can change the pointer, xda can for sure too Unfortunately I don't have any clue about this stuff, so hopefully someone else will drop in with a solution.

I have been using Gyrator 2. So far so good. But if the keyboard doesn't increase in size when you rotate the screen I don't see a huge advantage other than reading text or email on wider screen.
With the iPhone, yes I said the bad word, when you rotate the screen your keyboard changes making it easier to type on. That's what I'm really looking for. Something that will change the keyboard to a more finger friendly keyboard when rotated to landscape. Anything out there that can do that?
Also, any way to shrink those huge black bars when you rotate the screen at the top and bottom? I was noticing the top title bar (black bar 1) and the bottom soft menu bar (black bar 2) are HUGE in landscape mode and take up way too much real estate. It would be nice if those screen disolved and only appeared if you tapped the header/footer in a screen. I hope that made sense. Anythign apps than can do that? Or am I wishing on star.
Make sure you're using the default HTC keyboard, not the WM original one. The HTC keyboard (called full QWERTY in the input picker) does change and fill the entire screen widthwise when the screen is rotated.
shueflie, I am. And you're right. It does fit the entire screen but for some reason it sure doesn't seem bigger. Maybe it's just me. I guess it has to be getting bigger...but for some reason it still seems like too many keys squeezed in.
Are there any replacement keyboards, say something like a standard letter only keyboard, and then you press something for numbers only, and then something for special characters only? My fingers are too big.
Try the phone keypad in portrait mode (either with or without T9) and see if that suits you better. There are other keyboards available but I haven't tired any of them
Will give it a shot. If you can direct me to a link with more keyboards I'd appreciate it, in the meantime I'll use the almighty search and see what I can dig up.

Plenty of keyboards out there. Do a quick search in Themes, Applications and Software and you'll find what your looking for!!!
EDIT:
May also want to check Wiki to ensure keyboard software works ok, Programs/Utilites & Games working on the Touch HD (1 - M) & Programs/Utilites working on the Touch HD (N - Z)
Wow an entire wiki, that's what I'm talkin' about. Thanks!

Not all software is shown on these lists. Best option is to do a search for keyboard in Themes, Applications and Software.
If your unsure about anything, refer to this and it should answer most questions you have!
I just wanted to point a few things about the Samsung Vibrant everyone is complaining about how this phone does not have a D-Pad and i just wanted to clear this up.
In fact this phone has a d-pad, select the samsung keyboard if not already in use hold down the key on the keyboard that is use to select numbers and symbols you will see a d-pad appear with copy, past select text options.
Also to easily dim your screen or to brighten your screen, slide your finger across the top of the screen where the notification bar is and you will notice your screen brighten or darken according to which way you slide your finger. (Note you may need to disable auto brightness for this function to be activated.
Heres a pic of the dpad
The Swype keyboard also has a really nice d-pad. Just swype from the tutorial icon right to the SYM key and it will show up.

Thank you very much for the brightness slide tip!!!
Anyone else accidentally changing the brightness a lot? I swipe the bar with my left thumb, and if it's too angled of a swipe, my screen brightness goes to 11. I never thought I'd complain about a screen being too bright, lol.
can we activate the d-pad when not in a text entry field? I used the trackball on my G1 to select html anchors to get at small links or hovering elements
Wow I did not know this thanks for the info.

It can be used on a web page, but I've only gotten it to come up by hitting a text box first. For that, even the addresses bar works.

yes all you have to do is hold down the menu key they keyboard will pop up and then you just have to do the process up top..
What about when you need to see text in a menu selection that is truncated to the side?
For example, if you go to Market -> Apps, under Finance and Health, you can see there are text that runs off to the right edge you can't read. In my old phone MyTouch, if I highlight Finance, the text will scroll across so I can read the rest of the line. Can't do this right now with the Vibrant.

I'm not seeing that option since holding down menu opens the url bar which can't be closed independently of the keyboard.

Awesome post, thanks.
Anyone figure out a better way to auto-fit text on the browser? I find tilting my phone to change the orientation and tilting it back makes it auto-fit. Phones like the Incredible do it as you're doing pinch to zoom--no need to flip the phone around.

excellent! I didn't realize that was a d pad lol.. i always thought of a d pad being like a trackball or flat button like on the blackberry bold 9700
thanks to you and the original poster for the tip. I found out about the swipe for screen brightness by John on droiddog dot com
very nice but in swype you can do the same thing just swype from the swype key at the bottom left to the SYM key right beside it and you get arrows and some other goodies.
Oh wow! This was my biggest complaint about the Vibrant. Thank you very much.

I hit the - or + buttons back and forth to get the text to wrap, yeah it's a bummer they don't wrap using the pinch zoom. Also you can double tap the screen to initiate zoom, that method also auto-fits the text.
Rather than using soft keys, a rather elegant and simple solution would be to use gestures to emulate the missing hardware buttons. You could have a program that runs in the background and attempts to detect a 3-finger swipe for "back" and perhaps a 4-finger tap for the "menu". This method would even work for full-screen apps. Does such an app exist?
Currently the software on the nook only recognizes two fingers, so those specific gestures are out for now.
However I saw someone mention that running your finger right to left across the status bar in 1.2 stock works as a "back" gesture

Well, I'm talking about a general Android app running on a rooted NC and not the preloaded software. It would have to be a low-level program that would intercept all touch-screen activity and detect if any of the selected gestures were performed. If not, then pass the touchscreen activity to the currently running app.

It was that way in the older versions too. Pretty cool trick.
After Murdock's mod, softkeys are pretty nice.
there is an app called zmooth on the market.
zmooth rocks! Been using it for a while. Just made is very slim, and I put it on the bottom of the screen. Works great!

Funny thing is, that's in the manual
And it works for any non-full screen app on stock. I use Zeam on stock (never touch the home launcher), but the B&N status bar is always there anyway. As long as it's not full screen, you can use the right-to-left swipe to go back.
Ok, this is going to probably sound really dumb, but it's driving me nuts.
I've used Android for a few years now, and I've never sorted out if there's a way to scroll left and right in a text area.
No matter what keyboard I've used, I just end up deleting the whole dang thing, and typing from scratch, if it's text in a small window.
For example, if I typed a long url, and I realized after hitting enter that I must have made a typo. I'd like to go left to right in that bar and look for it easily.
I guess this has plagued me on every Apple and Android device I've owned. On RIM it was easy enough, and on older Symbian it was fine.
What the heck am I missing here?
Thanks!
Tap anywhere on the entered text - wait - there will be a blue arrow cursor below the text. Drag it whenever you want to start typing from.

Nifty. That works in the URL bar, but what about other input areas?
I can't seem to make that work in say the google search input window.

Ah, it's a Firefox issue then. I tried chrome and it works in that (though I never really use chrome).
Ok thanks.
I was hoping there would be a convenient left and right key option on the keyboard itself, so that it wouldn't matter what app I'm using, but I guess it's tied to the app itself. That kind of stinks. It's rather awkward in design.
Do you know of an alternative keyboard that supports that type of functionality? I like the "Swpe-like" setup in the stock keyboard, but I'd much rather have an easier correction method built in.
You can enable the function to move the cursor using the volume rocker. It's in Settings - Language and Input - and that option will be down below the input methods
I miss the big keyboard with arrows from HTC Flyer though - it's pretty awesome to use in portrait mode, though not as useful in landscape since it takes much more space than N7's does
And no, I don't know about other keyboard since I don't use them, I prefer stock

Excellent. That will work just fine.
Thanks a bunch for your help!
No doubt most users are happy using the standard capacitive and home keys to navigate their tablet but there are definitely more ways than one to get around and I thought it would be interesting to share our ideas and preferences that make using this (and other) tablet quick and easy.
I read and edit documents a lot so most of the time I prefer to have the tablet in portrait mode. I find the capacitive keys annoying as they are always get touched unintentionally by myself and especially when handing the tablet to someone else when trying to show them something.
So I decided to disable them by editing the generic.kl file in system/user/keylayout and putting an # before keys 139 & 158 then rebooting.
To the replace those keys I use GMD gesture control with some simple and easy to use gestures.
Pretty difficult to show exactly how well this works but first a screenshot showing the gestures paths and action. Dots are the fingers and lines the path they take.
And a video..... I put this together in a hurry so it looks pretty clunky. Recording video over ADB makes it look pretty slow too.

Quick Search and Lux are two other apps that I can highly recommend........ Rotation Lock is just a simple tasker task that uses the Ultimate Rotation app/plugin. Swiping rotation lock simply toggles between auto 0, 90, 180, 270 and swiping again locks in the desired orientation.

No probs and yeh GMD is definitely handy.
If anyone is having trouble with the way GMD functions with certain apps or in general tweak some of the advanced and touch consumption settings and you should be able to get it working flawlessly.

Good point - I had to do the screen calibration (super easy) in order to get the swipe from borders to work.
I agree though - I am surprised at how responsive this app is. How have I not been using this!?!
