Slide out keyboard or virtual keyboard? I was thinking about upgrading to the nexus s 4g but I can't deal without having a slide out keyboard
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

Different strokes for different folks.
Try it out before you buy.

one week i'll use the keyboard, next week I'll forget it's there.

I prefer virtual keyboard and I will be getting the nexus s in two weeks

ohhh cant yell at him for posting a question.. i see how it is!!
and... i did prefer a physical keyboard... but samsung messed it up so much with the button misses i barely use it..

I only ever type on the screen. The physical keyboard is handy for use with the Game Gripper, though.

lmao. Use impaler's keyboard fix. it works 100% for me. use the regular one not the speed demon one.

I bought Epic because of slideout keyboard, but thanks to Swype I use it once a month or less.

It is funny that you posted this because i was just running through all of the keyboards to see what I liked best. I have never us the physical keyboard othere than testing. I have always used swype and have loved it. But after playing with the keyboards I am really liking the Samsung keyboard in landscape mode. I got the epic because it had the physical keyboard. But after using the virtual keyboards I don't see myself ever using the physical keyboard unless it is for game control.

+1, I prefer having it for just this reason. There's also times I look at the virtual keyboard and think, "I can type this far faster on the regular keyboard."

For all you know it could end up being the Nexus X by Motorola next time around.

I use my soft keyboard for texting and short e-mails. I use my hard keyboard for long e-mails. I really like having both there and not sure if I would want a phone with only a soft keyboard.

I WANTED to use the physical keyboard a lot, it's the main reason I chose the Epic over the Evo. But the key skipping was infuriating, so I ended up using swype most of the time.
But when that keyboard fix started floating around the forums, Ohhhh boyyy! Now I just look for EXCUSES to slide out the keyboard.

wow that is crazy... not sure what I think of it so far, the keyboard thing is interesting and I'd love to play with it.
got to say the keyboard that I really like is skiftkey it monitors how you type and predicts your next word. I keep switching between swype that swiftkey.
Ahh, no thanks. It's always good to have options and competition, but I could never use that keyboard.
So far ShapeWriter seems fastest for me. I wish it had better prediction though.

Wow, how did they do that, lmao.
not bad. I still like swype better =)
The phrase invisible keyboard sounds really cool until you take a second and realize how silly it actually is. Additionally what if I meant to write tao and it thinks I must surely have meant tap or rap or yap, or maybe I meant tso as in the general's chicken or tsp like the measure. As far as I can tell this new system is nothing more than unmitigated sillyness.

You could try this really amazing app that will fix it; it's one of the best. It's called proof-reading.
Or try an auto-complete keyboard like Swype, Swiftkey etc.
You don't proof read before sending? Or you could turn off autocomplete and quick fixes.
This is a touch keyboard thing...
Like thong/thing, of/if, love/live, ****/duck, bit/but, me/mr etc etc
You didn't proof read it so you blamed the phone?....too funny!

Whatever it is you're drinking, smoking, and or ingesting, please don't get on XDA afterwords.
And if your relationship depends on "the moment" when you're text messaging, you must be 12, or making this all up.
OP is blaming Android when he should really blame himself for a lack of attention to detail.
Fact: Haight is a proper noun, it is NOT a word in the dictionary.
Fact: Haughty IS a word in the dictionary, it's an adjective.
I think I would have been mad had Android NOT changed it. Learn how auto-correct works.
The point is - autocorrect is great, but everything needs to be checked after writing when it's being utilized.

iPhone Keyboard

Apples phone may be NOTICEABLY smaller, but I type faster with the onscreen keyboard on the iphone than I do the epic lol.
I've always liked apples keyboard but I didn't think it'd be easier to type on than a 4inch screen.
Its so accurate
And I like how when you put it in landscape, it doesn't take up the whole screen so you can still read with the keyboard open
And text selection is sooooo much easier on the iPhone.
Android needs to take some notes in this area and all will be perfectooooooo

It does help, but it still happens.
same as above: not a real problem if i slow down just a tad. i want to say that the issue is worse on the DK28 roms than on DI18, but that might not be true at all. maybe for me tho...
p.s. i didn't vote in the poll because neither choice is accurate for me.... for me it would be somewhere in the middle of those two choices.
I havent noticed it...does it depend on the soft keyboard used? I use the Droid X Multitouch and dont notice sht.
Hey, you know what would be really weird? Is if it depended on whether or not the soft keyboard supported multitouch.
I'm gonna lean towards a software issue. I've uninstalled swype and its seemed to work.

Looks like people get varying results even when removing Swype. My question is, why do we need to remove one feature to make another work like it's suppose to? Has it gotten so bad that we must compromise one feature for another on such an "Epic" device?
I'm sure most will just say deal with it. But man I hate paying so much for a device and it doesn't even work right. The main selling point for me was the keyboard. I'm old school and just can't get used to the frustration of swype or SIP keyboards. But it is nice to have swype available when you type 3 or 4 words at a time. Often times I can't have my cake and eat it too but this is a phone for geezus pete. Can't I have the best of both worlds!?

Did you ever try the Swype keyboard? The version included with the Evo (and now the Evo Shift 2.3.3 stock) is pretty lousy compared to the newest beta (one of the major reasons I rooted as quickly as the hboot exploit was available).
I personally got the Shift from the get-go because of the hardware keyboard, to be able to use SSH apps without a virtual keyboard consuming half my screen. I broke my Shift at one point and had a loaner Evo from work for a few weeks. I actually found myself enjoying it quite a bit. That said, I'm glad to be back with the Shift.

I have tried swype and do like it. There are some technical words and/or acronyms that are needed in most of my emails that I never trained swype to learn or remember. I am truly loving the hardware keyboard again.

After having a G1 as my first (the first ever) android phone, I know I would miss a physical keyboard too much. Plus my fingers are long and bulky so a onscreen keyboard isn't really ideal for me.

I remember when the G1 came out. Was jealous of all who had it.

Hah, I rooted my Shift the first day I got it. Couldn't wait to try out some of the ROMs with Sense 3.0 stuff built in. Been using SupremeSense and loving it.
