[BATTERY]--Improving CM7 Battery Life--[BATTERY] - Vibrant General

So I have seen a couple users asking about creating a new thread for battery life on CM7 only, so here it is. I am getting ok battery life, but nothing near where it should be.
Here is where you can suggest, try, try again, and submit findings pertaining to the battery life. So let's get this started!!

I've found that turning off the radio saves battery life so I def. think that the radio is the problem for it

Thanks for starting this. It should be interesting to see where this thread goes.....

You mean flight mode? I don't think that is a viable solution, well at least if you need to use the phone. I can't even get xda super power installed for some reason

try some of the different cm7 modems that are around, i found that on the 2.2 roms the kb5 modem was very efficient... it helps a bit with cm nightly got about 16 hours moderate use.

I turn data off when not in use and it definitely saves battery for me.

I get better battery life with KB5 too.
I can confirm that data use is probably part of the issue. I live in the sticks, there is no 3G at my house. My battery life is actually descent, no where near what I had with Froyo, but it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as bad as other people are claiming.

turn off background data when you don't need it, don't use auto brightness.

Personally, I've just read from some ROM thread here, that you need to calibrate your battery if you flash custom ROMS. So far, it has worked out quite nicely.

Yes, also doing that. I recommend to go to the Android Market and search for Battery Calibration by NeMa. It's a great, free application as well to make sure that your battery is calibrated on top of the instruction from the quote.

Using spare parts app change wifi sleep policy to never. Known bug in gingerbread. New wifi drivers were just released for stock builds but I don't know if theyll work on cm7 or if they will be implemented.

Ya battery calibration app works quite well, that is something I haven't done yet with this ROM 0_o

I was having terrible, absolutely terrible battery life with CM7 and I decided to do some investigating. On my initial installation I used Titanium backup and Google Backup to restore settings and applications. I could not manage 4-6 hours on a single charge, with calibration.
I decided to do a fresh CM7 install to test things out. I simply booted into recovery and wiped data, cache, and system. I reinstalled the initial package provided on the CM forums and let CM7 boot. After letting the new installation settle down for 10 minutes, I rebooted into recovery, flashed gapps, and then the newest nightly. Again, I let it boot and sit for 10 minutes before performing anything. After settling down, I charged up to 100%, rebooted into recovery again, and wiped battery stats.
I should note that through this I declined google's offer to use backup services and declines google's offer to restore any old backups. I also decided to not restore any apps through titanium backup.
With my screen brightness set to 100%, wifi enabled, bluetooth enabled, and using the phone at amoderate to heavy amount, I have gone 12 hours and am at 5%. I am certain that after the battery stats can calibrate fully and run through a few more charges I will easily hit 15 hours on moderate to heavy usage.

if you have rom manager pro the nightlies are available for download.

here's a few tips for you guys:
1. turn off 3G, stick to GSM only. Found in settings > wifi and network > mobile network> gsm only
2. use some black themes, anything than the normal grey and stuff should help
3. If you have data, use that instead of wifi, from what I see wifi eats more battery
4. if you're using wifi, go into wifi settings > *menu button* > advanced wifi settings > wifi sleep policy to: when screen turns off or never when plugged in.
hope that helps

This thread has been very helpful. Thanks

What do you hope to gain or expect from calibrating your battery? Better battery life? What is your typically daily usage? How much talk time do you use? How much surfing do you do? Any game playing? Music playing? Do you have push email accounts? Do you use BT and Wifi regularly? Do you turn off BT and Wifi when not using it?
Finally is this a stock Aria setup or have you rooted and flashed a custom ROM? If so, which one?
Lots of factors go into battery consumption and your actual mileage may varying.

Theres a method in the old cm6.0 thread if you search within that thread that works. But the technique I use now is time. Eventually the battery meter will calibrate itself with enough cycles. Just wipe battery stats from clockwork on a full charge.

So based on my experience with CM 6.1.1 and the usage patterns you mentioned, I would think that your battery should last at least a full day, right? It may even give you part of a second day. As CallMeAria mentioned in his post, I also found that clearing the battery stats and just letting the battery run through its cycles will give you pretty accurate meter readings over time.
Actually since I just updated yesterday I've noticed a reasonably longer battery life coming from fr008 so maybe I wont need it anymore

You can also do some bump charging but it's a hassle more than anything.
Basically, you just charge the phone to 100%, shut the phone off. After it's off you plug it in again and wait until the LED indicator turns green. Unplug it, then plug it in again and repeat. This method actually does work quite well but will shorten the battery's life span.

bamboozle discussion thread 2

[redacted] What are everyone's thoughts? So far for me, i feel it's i3 on steroids, and I feel pretty good about it. GPS didn't work at all for me on i3, and works well enough on bamboozle. I have done three drives successfully and one that gps failed after a few minutes.
Gives me much more hope for our gingerbread future.
Also... just now i experienced a new bug. Screen turned off while i had keyboard open and the keyboard backlight wouldnt turn back on till i closed it and reopened the slider. Never had that on any other rom.
Edit: don't post links to the rom... this thread needs to stay open. [redacted] i love reasonable discussion [redacted]

I had the same problem with i3. Haven't had it happen with bamboozle so far. I have had one or two lockups but I am pretty sure they are overclocking related with tegrak (tried to do 1.2 ghz with the default 1.275v, probably need 1.3v on my phone to be stable, and I'm not gonna pay for tegrak when hopefully source and new kernels are around the corner)

And this ROM is pretty good from what I've been using so far. After the modem settled in a little, 3G is somewhat about the same as EC05, where it was **** when it first got Odin'ed. Hopefully, it'll be updated to whatever is good about EG22.

Usually ,,though, govod roms are too good to be true and I randomly get tons of fc's on the third or fourth day. Well see what happens though. I just wish a rom would last me on outings. I often don't feel comfortable leaving the house without stock.

Whenever I leave my phone charged overnight, I wake up to around 70% charged. It's as though once it reaches 100%, it stops "charging" and it starts using the battery's energy, rather than the AC. Any help?

Is there any Custom ROM in particular that you would recommend?
go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070 and follow step 2, then go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459905 readthrough the first part on TW kernels, choose one of the 3 custom kernels (not the stock one), best advice is to read the op of each one and find one you think will work for you. they are all three well written kernels. one is already oc'd to 1200, which means no need for voltage control if you plan to oc your phone. most phones are stable at 1200 but thats just from doing alot of messing around and odining. the second post is the instructions for flashing the kernel. the first post just explains all of them to the best i could w/o kanging any information from the op. i just ran what i knew off memory. links to each kernel's op are at the bottom of post 1. i did links to the op's instead of posting dropbox files due to the fact that I want people to make sure they know what features each kernel has before they download it.

They are essentially the same thing. Battery Calibration is wiping the battery stats and running the phone dead than fully recharging.
I have been having a very similar issue. A buddy of mine (captivate) and I found that the phone wont charge past 98% on CyanogenMod with the Glitch kernel. I set the phone to not lock and keep the screen on while charging and the problem went away. The phone also would not stay on A/C power after reaching 98%. This issue was fixed too.
I think its an inherent problem with the batteries on the phones, since the issue occurs on many different roms/kernels/phones.

Abysmal battery life

Hello,
The battery on my S3 is driving me crazy. I originally had an S3 and went to the Note II, but reverted back to another S3 because I couldn't stand the size of the Note. Anyway, this S3's battery is really bad - I barely use it and it drains 5% an hour, sometimes more. I've tried everything, location is turned off, social media is all turned off I just update it manually... I've attached some screenshots. it was 50% and dropped to 34% in just 2 hours and a half, I only used it for 2 minutes during that time according to the Screen data.
Any thoughts, suggestions or miracle solutions are appreciated.
Have you tried turning it on and off again?
Seriously try another ROM dude

Try this. Im using Sotmax as well but with perseus kernel. In stweaks I under volted the CPU by -75mv and gpu by -50mv. Super smooth and completely stable.
I tried other kernels and I just couldn't get good battery life. I'm getting about 14 hours of solid use. Screen on of about 3.5 hours. I used to only get 7-8 hours.
The other thing I did was freeze the following which constantly run in background.
Video Hub
Software Update
SSuggest
Samsung Push Service (for Sammy app updates)
Make sure you remove your Samsung account. It constantly runs in background.
Wifi advanced settings change Wifi policy to only when charging. I find Wifi drains this phone fast.
I highly recommend resetting the battery levels by typing *#0228#
Then choose quick start. Unlock the phone and your battery will show the actual levels. Charge to 100%
Finally, I matched the ril with the modem included with this rom. Install the app getril and download the proper ril and install.
Hope this helps!
