My 5 cents - Acer Iconia A500

I was able to play a 2gb+ 720p flawlessly from my 4gb Kingston thumb drive. AVI using Moboplayer.
The Good
Gotta love widgets
Love the USB port
I did a little side-by-side with the StevePad...
Small font in a web page is easier to read than on iPad2 (my girlfriend's)
The back camera takes better pictures than iPad
The Bad
Picture colours are a little washed next to iPad
The cross-hatch pixel pattern can be seen on white backgrounds, not so much on the iPad
GUI still not as smooth as iPad...but close
The Ugly
GPS takes forever to lock - some workarounds
No ad-hoc networks allowed - but there's a fix for that
Activesync not supported, or OWA via native browser (or Dolphin) but Firefox works
I love the Iconia but Honeycomb could be a little more polished. Can't wait for updates cuz I want to keep this tab.
Hope the great developers here stick with this model for a bit.
EDIT: I traded my A500 in for another and no more cross-hatch pixel pattern!!

i had a 4GB or so mkv that a played from USB via mobiplayer. It made me use software to decode hence very choppy. 720p. Just a silly test to see what would happen. Love the USB.

As far as video codecs, all Tegra 2 devices are cursed with poor codec support, thus poor hardware acceleration support. Nvidia talks a lot of media smack, but does not support the chipset to back it up.

A few questions before I buy a Shift

This really seems like a neato computer, but I have some questions that need to be answered before I buy one:
1. Can I play Counter-strike 1.6/Condition Zero on it? What about Unreal Tournament 2004? What frame rates can I expect?
2. How responsive is the touch pad? I tried the touch pad on another laptop in a local store and it had very annoying input lag.
3. Do you think that 384 kbps would be enough to play CS 1.6 and UT2K4 online? I'm not completely sure if I can get my providers Turbo 3G service on to my sim card. Also, Shift only supports 3.6 and not 7.2 mbit right? Will a 7.2 mbit sim card work in it anyway?
4. Do you think it'd support my Trekstor DVB-T USB stick? The minimum requirement is for it is 800 mhz and DirectX 9 and I really don't like being right on the minimum. I'm guessing that I'm not going to get 800x480 fullscreen tv on it?
5. How good is it with movies and recorded TV shows? Avi, divx, mpeg, wmv etc, can it handle standard definition in full screen? Some quick examples would be avi at 576x320 and wmv at 640x480.
6. Is there any chance I could get a photo of the interpolated 1024x600 side-by-side with a photo of the native 800x480?
Thanks in advance
Do not count on a extreme gaming experience on the shift.
Counterstrike 1.6 might work, with low settings and WindowsXP installed.
Like Quake3 arena plays like a charm
MY cynergy XS USB DVB stick show full screen shows at perfect speed.
Computer is monotask during playing, using anything else will slow thinks to a crawl. But I watch TV shows on widescreen everyday. Main difficulty is to get the antenna to work...
For movies, you can play any size using coreplayer.
Unreal turnament can be palyed also with a reasonable frame rate. You will have to play on low resolution, and will have occasional lags. I suggest you look for another device for intense gaming.
I'm not looking for an extreme gaming experience on a device like this, just something besides surfing the Internet and watching videos, because I can do that just fine with my cellphone.
Was that Quake III Arena video real-time rendered on the Shift or was that just a video? I'm very suspicious because I don't see anything plugged in to the usb port and I don't see him using the touch pad.
Hasn't anyone tried playing CS 1.6/CZ? I don't think they'd be too demanding for the Shift with an 800 mhz processor as the recommended spec. Maybe even Counter-Strike: Source at the lowest settings? It has an 800 mhz minimum.
@thaihugo: The "using anything else" part makes me a bit worried since I'd like to use a card reader as well for the encrypted channels, because here in Sweden we only have one decent free tv channel. That's better than nothing I guess.
You mean UT2K4 right? I didn't see screenshots of it until today and I didn't realise that it had relatively good graphics since I assumed that it had far more primitive graphics than UT3. Definitely worth a try then. I just hope that you didn't mean UT99
Right now what I'm the most curious about is if I can play Counter-strike 1.6/CZ/Source on it, and how responsive the touch pad is. How noticeable is the delay on the touch pad? I don't expect it to be good enough for a twitch shooter but it'd be nice if it's quick and precise enough for surfing without using the touch screen to click on everything.
Shift is not that powerfull
if you are interested in gaming the everun note may be a choice for you. www.umpcportal.com has tested it a few days ago. But it has probably a less responsive touchscreen.

Concerned about Xvid playback, how bad is it?

Hope someone can offer me some advice. Video playback is very high on my priorities. I currently have an Omnia which is pretty flawless playing back DIVX or XVID encoded files. I am not interested in playing back High Def content, only xvid/divx avi files that I download such as TV and DVD Rips.
How good is the Touch HD with Coreplayer, I am pretty worried from all that I read about HTC/Qualcomm drivers not working properly and this is a deal breaker for me. I don't know if the Touch Pro 2 is the same, I know it has the same processor.
I have been out of contract for a couple of months and was waiting to get an Iphone but I will have to encode all my xvid files in order for them to play, at least until Coreplayer for Iphone is released. I was happy with my Omnia but I seem to have endless problems with getting programs working as they should and of course there is no official support on this site.
If video playback is ok for these type of files I may go for either the Diamond 2/Touch Pro 2 or Touch HD as they all seem to be a similiar spec.
Booo, DivX on HD
One of the main reasons I bought my Touch HD was for playing Divx. I have a couple of old Dell Axims which have been great but the attraction with the Touch HD was it was a phone aswell, GPS, bluetooth for the car and I could watch films on the train to work in high res still.
Actually, it's a bit rubbish in my opinion. The screen is amazing but you cannot use TCPMP that well as it judders too much. So you have to resort to using the pretty limited Coreplayer (no AC3 support which is annoying when you only realise after you have boarded your train to work!). No easy way of fast forwarding as you cannot program all the soft touch buttons. No easy way of raising / lowering the volume either.
Oh yes and it still skips and judders in Coreplayer unless you are watching a boring movie about paint drying as it has no movement on the screen.
I bet you will get a ton of positive responses but this is what I think. If you are still tempted after my rant about the HD then I would suggest trying it.
of course if you are interested in buying it then it is an amazing DivX player and works flawlessly.
I will second Damians post, although Rubbish might be a little harsh...
Like you I was very excited to basically just drop a couple of TV shows on the Storage Card without any interaction and start playing them on my way to work but it didn't take long to realize that was merely a dream...
I consider myself being picky about quality and as of now the quality in such a setup is not watchable. At the moment I encode with Super and then transfer to Storage Card (got it setup fairly automatic with MobSync). I am holding on with hopes of better compatibility from CorePlayer (support for the chip), a better player or any other major breakthrough in the issue since I do think that for me there is no phone on the market that can beat the incredible screen... that I believe was made for watching media such as described.... sigh...
On a small note.... I had the Diamond2 to compare (benchmarked and simple visual comparison) side by side and though benchmarking exceeds the Touch HD (HD: 75-90% vs D2: 105-120%) as well as the visual appearence.... the screen really is a major difference that might be worth waiting for a better HD solution...
2 cents... signed and delivered...

Thanks for the advice. I was hoping for something more positive re playback but you more or less just confirmed what I thought. I think I'm going to go for the new Iphone this summer if I need to convert files anyway.
I havn't found it too bad to be honest (and I'm another perfectionist). I was annoyed for weeks and spent ages scanning this forum and different options, but as it stands, on the newest stock rom (which only uses up 29% of ROM), using SDcard tune-up, and the best options in Coreplayer (turning sound to mono-join etc), I get no skips in films or TV shows. I'm perfectly happy with it, although I do make sure to check the videos play once I've dropped them on (and 8 out 10 of thousands of Divx/Xvid/Avis from loads of sources work on the box).
So 8/10 for me. I'll try to provide more info if you need.
There is a tool, called "HTC Touch HD Video Converter", just search the forum. Works very fast, esp. on two core machines. In my opinion, this is the best converter, every movie i've converted with this tool runs just gorgeous on my touch HD using the built-in player Album. No delays, no sound issues at all - just like it should be, smooth and the picture is brilliant.
I used different converters and I don't know what's so special about this one but it just works, other didn't (in my case). I was kinda disappointed with the touch HD, videos didn't run smoothly, I even wanted to buy the ipod touch, before I used this tool.

I think this information is'nt correct. You have tried out the free vxflash from Cydia store? You should be able to play divx, xvid, and flv files directly with iPhone with no conversion.

Would you mind sharing your config.xml located in Application Data/CorePlayer?
(...or specify your settings manually, but I think above would be easier)
I feel like I've tried all possible settings with no success. It would be greatly appreciated!

I was also very excited when i finally got my Touch HD, espacially for watching TV series like you guys. 3 hours on the train is not bearable without some kind of entertainment . Well at first i also was very frustrated cause i am one of those people that instantly pick up jerky movement in a movie or when the sound lags just a few frames behind. Ever tried watching 4:3 content on a 16:9 tv, but stretched? Everytime i see something like that, i feel the urge to cry But there are many people that do not pick up such things.
Got a bit offtopic here, sorry. What i wanted to say is, i got accustomed to the slight jerky movement while watching something. The luxury of being able to pull out your phone, attach your headset and simply watch something while on the train, the bus or somewhere else, simply outweighs the not so fluent playback. As already mentioned the display is absolutely gorgeous. This is of course my oppinion. Using coreplayer on Topix 2.1.
Hey I've uploaded it (as a text file). For this, anything xvid, avi, divx, mpg etc. just seems to work (well, 9 out of 10 files, ranging from 174mb TV shows to 1gb movies).
Will be interested to know your thoughts or offer any further feedback,
Another thumbs up for Projections Video Encoding GUI - films I've converted are very smooth and audio and video are all in sync. A great app.
Try this program too. It'll help you find and open your video files with the HTC Album. Click on the link for more details.

Hi, I tried TCPMP and then Coreplayer to play standard resolution Divx files. With coreplayer I get very good results after increasing the buffer it uses for video and audio.
I'm using regular Divx or xvid movies, with MP3 audio. I'm using episodes from House M.D. for example, in high definition, and they look perfectly good. A movie like Terminator, with high movement, a lot of explosions, etc, is more difficult to handle. But overall I'm satisfied with what you get with the correct software and settings.
Unfortunately I have come to realize after trying several devices and hundreds of programs that Windows Mobile programming is still on it's infancy and 95% of the programmers cannot reach an aceptable level of ussability. I'm tired of big slow programs, that cannot display the simplest of 2D screen while in others you can pan or zoom a photo fast, or display video full screen at 20 - 25 fps. That shows you that the hardware is capable of fast processing and screen redraw, just most programs are too big and too slow.

plex for android vs ios airvideo

In an atempt to watch some films stored on my 1TB box via local wifi, I have installed plex for android on my TF and a crappy atom 450 netbook. I also have a ipad 1 with airvideo on the ipad plus the netbook. firstly when my netbook is attached via usb to the HD box all the films are playable on the TF in any format all with sound and in the right aspect ratio, the problem is for any file over 1.5gig there is stopping and buffering, maybe due to the processor speed of the netbook. the difference on the ipad is totaly different. I have Inception at 720p and a file size of 3.5gig and it streams in high res with clear sound and picture on only 256mb ram.
As an avid android fan it pains me to say but im glad i also have a jailbroken ipad. At this stage of the game HC does not live up to what I had hoped an android tablet would be.
The negatives touted against a (rooted) ipad do not stack up, OK usb stick and sd card on an ipad but only if not powered so for files, photos etc, file browsing by ifile is easy, and flash is not an issue because its so flakey on the TF I use HTML5.
My general thoughts are the TF is a good netbook replacement and honeycomb is 75% there
the UI is way better than IOS, it just does not do what it says on the tin.
With a faster PC running the Flex server it is definatley the answer for all your movies no converting.
My only gripes with HC and maybe ASUS if they turn out to be TF related are flash, video performance in general and this awful unaceptable keyboard lag.
sort it out and I might sell my ipad
I agree with you that the TF sucks in handling flash and HD videos. However, bear in mind that the iPad has 1024x768 resolution, so it will not support 720p. Therefore, AirVideo is not nearly working as hard.
Looks like the bottle neck is your cpu and memory. I have a Intel Celeron E3300 and two GB of ram. I am able to stream 17-20GB blu ray rip from inside and outside my network with plex. The issue is that your computer has to transcode the video and audio before its sent it out to your TF. I noticed that on my E3300 clock at default 2.5 it was stuttering on files that were 6GB and higher. After overclocking it to 3.0 no issues. I dont know how airvideo works on the ipad but for plex it has to transcode the video/audio before it display on your TF.
It's probably down to how airvideo and plex actually encode the video stream...I do agree plex should give more options to allow better control of the codec itself..
you can also choose to encode all your movies files in handbreak using 720P High profile, they look great on the TF.
Can anyone tell me why Plex adds loads of compression when streaming videos? I've changed wi-fi to 5mb on my transformer but still compression everywhere. Maybe I'm missing something but there doesn't seem to be any transcoding settings on the PC client software. Playback looks so much better when playing the file from the internal memory on the transformer.
can anyone help please?

Which verison of plex are you using? Under verison 9.8.7 there a setting call less Color/more speed. Make sure this is not enable. I don't believe that verison 1.0 has this setting. I get compression when my wifi is set to auto. With 5mb enable the compression is gone.
I'm running version 1.0 on android.
I downloaded a different version of ffmpeg as per this thread -
http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/26531-playback-issues-potential-fix/page__st__20
This seems to have solved it somewhat, although still not perfect. It's strange as a 720p file plays fine but a normal avi is not quite there.

What processor is the GT 8.9 using?

http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-P7310MAAXAR-specs
1080p playback, 3GP, MP4, AVI, WMV, FLV, MKV (Codec: MPEG4, H.263, Sorenson H.263, H.264, VC-1, XviD)
Why can this play back all these when the 10.1 can't?
This blows. Tegra2 is old news anyway.
Im gonna sell my 10.1 and get the quad core version anyway.
The "old" tab 8.9 also has a tegra2 processor.
The new one that should come out next year has an OMAP4 1.4 ghz procssor.
Interestingly, the list of formats of the 10.1 is also similarly long:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-P7510UWYXAB-specs
When they write some format is supported, don't take it for granted.
And even if it is supported, one format often has multiple sub formats.
Please also differentiate video container format (a file with a certain suffix that usually wraps video and audio together, sometimes also adding subtitles or chapters) and video codec (the format of the video or audio stream itself that is embedded in the file).
For instance h264 avc video is generally supported, but when it is in high resolution (720p or larger) only a subset of encodings, generally wrapped up with the name "base profile" are supported.
This is a limitation of the tegra2 chipset.
Other chipset like that used with OMA4 supports a more wider range. Also, tegra3 should fix this limitation.
Its really a complex area.
Is there a certain format or video that does no play for you?
If so please report which (in as much detail as possible)....
All you need to know is that Tegra 2 has very poor video playback support.
I'll probably never buy a Tegra based stuff again, considering how poor tegra 2 is. Also ICS will be OMAP native so expect slow update on tegra devices.

Really? I have 2TB of MKV files all remux'd with their original frame rates and resolution. Other than the occasional frame drop, all have played well. This includes 1080p Blu-Ray movies. I copy files off my TiVo's which end up as MP2's and they all play fine as well. I stream using PlayOn and Plex and haven't had any issues there either. I bought a ton of stuff on MediaHub during the $.01 sale and they played beautifully. YouTube works fine which many complain about which is surprising considering we're all using the same hardware and software. I just watched the Twilight Next Dawn trailer full-screen in HD and there wasn't even a frame drop.
There are two components to effective video playback - hardware and software. Samsung does an incredible job with the drivers for the latter which is why if you look at the Tab vs. any other Tegra device in a video comparison it kicks ass. Some of you having video playback issues may want to look at your content and wireless connections. I had a Qualcomm-based Jetstream and returned it after a week because it absolutely sucked at video playback and wasn’t usable at all with any of the streaming apps. I’m guessing its epic fail was based on the HTC software and drivers. OMAP is next up and Samsung may use Exynos in future tablets. Until then, this is about as good as it gets.

So, a high-profile L4.1 1080p video (MKV or even MP4) file play perfectly on your Tegra 2 Galaxy Tab 10.1 via the stock video player or any other good 3rd party video player? That's the first time I've heard of the Tegra 2 being able to do so.
I read on samsung page Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 have Bluetooth 3.0.
But Tegra 2 chipset don´t have Bluetooth 3.0.
It is false of Samsung (itwas same with 10.1) and they dont know their own product or it have another processor?
LTE version Galaxy Tab 8.9 will have 1,5 Ghz Exynos processor (and micro sd slot).
If normal wersion will be have exynos(1,2 Ghz) too, I will be happy(for 1080p high profile playback)

From what he wrote it sounds like the videos are converted on the fly when he copies them - and that will probably be in a format that tegra2 can handle.
If not then the original video is already in base profile because tegra2 defenitively can't handle 1080p high profile.
Baseline: some 1080p videos play, some don't - that guy probably just got lucky and did not run into formats it can't handle...

1) - I don't stream "from" any of my mobile devices. I run a home server and it's easier to keep all my content there and then stream "to" the device(s) when I want to view or display content. The only content trapped on my phone are things downloaded through MediaHub. But anything in MediaHub is available elsewhere if I wanted to watch it on a big screen.
2) - I use DVDFab and have for years. It has its own codecs which work well but I use it with CoreAVC. I think the quality of encoded files makes a huge difference in playback and is probably the root issue for people having problems. They have a free trial if people want to compare it to what they're currently using.
3) - I have a Netgear N750 which is a fairly new high-end router. It reaches everywhere in my three story house without the need for a repeater. I have home theatre PC's attached to my main TVs via Wi-Fi and use them to display content off the server. Most of the time, I access my content while away from home. Plex is my main server/client and it does a fantastic job streaming to mobile devices - even over 3G. I also use PlayOn for accessing Hulu and network TV content. It too works really well over 3G. It has a new feature "PlayLater" that lets you store Hulu and network content (including Netflix movies) locally for playback any time. Both do a great job of transcoding on the fly which is why they work so well in a low-bandwidth and low-processing power environment.
Personally, any phone or tablet is under powered to be an effective media server. Maybe great for videos and pics recorded on the device, but anything else is a stretch until the hardware improves.

Tegra2 doesn't have a specified chipset, even for Bluetooth. It will work with any Bluetooth HCI device that talks UART, USB, or SDIO.
And why do you care about 3.0? There aren't really any practical advantages. I still have yet to see anything on the market that supports high speed mode.
I am now using my new galaxy s2 with the exenyos processor and it really makes the tegra 2 processor in my gtab.10.1 feel like it is a slug. From day one I never really thought the tegra 2 felt any faster than the single core hummingbird processor in my galaxy s original. I guess the magazine reviewers overhyped it, the graphics is pitiful compared to the original galaxy s and now the s2.

It also comes with AllShare (DLNA). I'm getting a 3G from the UK and am using a U.S. Wi-Fi right now. I'll post what other differences I find when I get it in two weeks.
---------- Post added at 03:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:12 PM ----------
1) - I don't stream "from" any of my mobile devices.

So then Samsung pages dont know their own product, because GT-P7510/M16 have in real only Bluetooth 2.1.

I have a SGS2 also and had a G2X which was Tegra. You can't compare a phone and a tablet. The SoC is pushing 800x480 to a 4.3" screen on a phone and 1024x768 on a 10" screen on a tablet. That's why phones with the new qHD displays benchmark below their predecessors. No doubt the Exynos would perform better than the Tegra but your not going to see the same performance you're getting on your SGS2.

Where's your Tab from? The model numbering system is the same worldwide but there are regional differences. The U.S. versions have 2.1 and it says so on the Samsung U.S. website.
I am from Europe and there SGT 10.1 have also Bluetooth 2.1.
But before start sales SGT 10.1 in USA(June) us samsung mobile says it have BT 3.0. After one week they correct this. Now it seems same with SGT 8.9.

Allshare Cast, worst 60€ spent ever!

I bought my Note 10.1 not long ago and after i played around a lot, rooted it and made it a german Note (it came from switzerland, no software updates available).
I thought, i can connect a mouse, a keyboard, USB drives .. but to get a video signal to my monitor, i would need the HDMI adapter for 18€ (which is much for a port that is native on most android tablets) which would block out USB devices OR i would buy the Allshare cast for 60€, which is wireless. I even planned to use it as windows alternative. Anyway, there are not much reviews about it that match my opinion after i used it for 15 minutes.
Out of the box, everything is great. I connect it to my 27" Asus PC screen (i was surprised they incuded a HDMI cable!), it starts by itself - huh, no separate switch to turn it off? No, there is not. It's always on. At least the LED doesn't shine as bright as the sun.
After that, i connected the Note 10.1 with it. I recorded for you what happens next:
Yup, that's right. Every Multiwindow availability disappears. From that point, it was almost certain i would send it back. But that's still not everything, i have ~15-20 FPS when scrolling through my homescreens and app drawer! Also there is ~0,1 - 0,2s of lag between the Note's screen and my Asus. I think videos work fine, i had only Simpsons on the Note and i can't really tell the FPS by that.
And the last part: The image quality is lousy. My 27" has only FullHD which is approximately half the DPI of the Note 10.1. But it has artefacts (it kind of compresses the colors i think; i tried to make pictures but you can't really see anything on it) which makes the image look so bad that i could instantly decide that i would send it back.
Probably i made someone the decision easier whether to buy it or not. I will buy the HDMI cable, have a look at the image quality and if it's worth it (and only then) i will keep it and probably buy a bluetooth keyboard + mouse so i can try again to use it as desktop replacement.

I use the AllShare Cast dongle a lot; especially when I'm traveling. It performs pretty well but the weaker the Wi-Fi connection the more latency is introduced. I have no problems using the web or watching videos on hotel TVs when I'm traveling with good performance about 90% of the time. I've used the HTC Media Link HD dongle which does the same thing the Samsung dongle does. There's far less latency between the device and the dongle on Samsung's solution, it's easier to connect, and the HTC dongle has no on or off switch either.

AllShare Cast uses a lot of resources on the device. I'm guessing that's why they disabled multiview which also uses a lot of resources on the device.

Here are two clips of video playing via AllShare. The first is Hulu the second is YouTube. That means the device is downloading content via Wi-Fi and then projecting it out again via Wi-Fi to the dongle which is a lot more resource intensive than just playing local content. You’ll see the videos (both HD) play with no problem. I haven't had any issues (provided the Wi-Fi signal's decent) watching video from any number of sources. There's an update for the dongle in Play. Have you applied it?
Hmm, I also have the AllShare Cast dongle and I connect it with a Sony Bravia tv with excellent result, granted I limit its usage to playing locally stored video content but I have played some YouTube videos as well in HD mode with superb picture quality. I sit too far away from the tv to use it as an alternate screen but I suppose it might be possible.

Yes, the update is installed. i didn't mean to compare the dongle to the HTC one, it's just that for my expectations the dongle did really bad. For pure multimedia purpose it would be not as bad as i experienced (the helicopter demo video ran smoothly), but i couldn't do anything to get higher FPS in android. I could even neglect the lag and a BIT of the bad image quality.
If i would only want to watch videos on the TV streamed with the Note, the Allcast Dongle would do fine but then i could use the HDMI cable, too - a bit less comfy, but 40€ cheaper than the dongle.
The dongle however is a lot more convenient than a cable. You can walk around with your tablet or sit quite a distance from the screen.

hilarious! why would I want LESS multi-tasking capability on a BIGGER screen?
