[Q] using other networks on the play - Xperia Play General

hey guys im thinking of getting the play from a place called rogers its a Canadian company they suck and overcharge so im gonna get it off contract anyway i hear they keep the phone locked to the rogers network by unlocking the bootloader and getting it rooted will that allow any sim to work on it?
thanks in advice

In short no.
But I have better new for you.
You can get any sim to work on the phone and keep your warranty.
You have to buy a code there are many places you can get them from here is an example.
The plus for this is that the phone is unlocked no matter what you do to it and you keep your warranty.
Also the Rogers xperia play does not have the ability to unlock the bootloader yet. Even with an unlocked bootloader you probably wouldn't be able to sim unlock it.

hey thanks for the quick reply i just have one question for ya do u know about this site w*ww.cellunlocker.ne*t they do it cheaper but they look somewhat fake and for the play they make you download an app to unlock it that sound fake to you? sorry im new with the android / sim unlocking world old phone was cdma

Will a regular G1 SIM unlock work on a Rogers G1?

Hey all. I just purchased a Rogers Dream off eBay to replace my ADP1 (no AT&T 3G). I am just wondering about unlocking it. Will any of the current G1 unlocks for T-Mo G1's work on it or is there a specific one for Rogers?
If you are talking about a service that you get your imei to and they give you the unlock than yes since the imei is what the unlock is based off of. Or you can just try to get roger's # and give them a try to see if they will be nice
Rogers? Nice? HAH! Hell freezing over and having the next all star game is more likely unfortunately. Your going to have to get an IMEI based unlock solution.
Haha thanks guys!
And btw I completely meant an IMEI solution the whole time. I was just making sure that they didn't use different unlock code algorithms.

Noob question about Unlocking

Hi,
sorry if this has been posted before:
I'd like to know if I buy this phone from Carriers different from my local BELL carrier , would it be possible to unlock the Legend myself for FREE?
I know i can pay $20 to buy some unlock code to unlock the phone from several websites but im wondering if its something i can generate somehow using tools that the members has developped from xda?
Thanks
I am also wondering if I can unlock this bad boy for use on our Telus network here in Canada... Virgin Mobile has it as of right now, and Bell is going to get it on the 16th (that may solve your problem, OP) but I'm looking at buying it outright and unlocking it for Telus... Possible? and possibly free? or do I have to pay for unlocking? (never unlocked a phone before)

Been googling and so far nothing but PAID unlock codes...
but to answer your question... that's what the "unlocking" is for... once you unlock your phone you can use it on any carrier and therefore not locked to a specific carrier... yes Virgin has it so you can buy Virgin's Legend and use it on Telus once unlocked of course. You'll probably have some Virgin's and Bell's software on it which you cant use.
you can flash it with a unbranded firmware, "RUU", it's a exe file, lanch it from pc and it installs the new firmware just like a firmware update should work this way
I have the Virgin Legend and there are only two signs of any carrier customizations: A Self Serve App (it's actually a shortcut to Bell's site, and it doesn't even work) and a TV & Music App (which can't connect). I am guessing that they don't work because it's probably identical to the Bell Legend which has those on it, I don't think they're intended for the Virgin model, or at least they're not tapped into the system properly yet.
you can unlock for $10 at cellunlock.net with coupon code crackb50. got this from howard forums.
Thanks for the coupon code. I just used it now. $10 is a lot more reasonable than $20 (regular price was actually $30 but it was $10 off before the coupon).
I was going to get a Rebel SIM II shipped to me but Koodo released SIM cards today and I want to get this thing unlocked before the weekend. Hope typing in a number doesn't void the warranty.

Unlocking s4 to Straight Talk

Please excuse my ignorance, I've been doing my best to find some info on unlocking a S4 SGH-i337 AT&T phone, and again please accept my apology if this is the wrong board. I've been doing some research but would like to know if this exact model is still lockable to this date.
I've come upon a great deal on this phone. I use Straight Talk and would like to be able to use it as a prepaid device as I'm doing with my nexus 4 right now.
I'd like to know if anyone could point me in the direction of unlocking this device or if it's possible at all to unlock and switch to straight talk?
Hope to hear some valid responses soon, take care you guy's.
PS: also if unlocked I should be able to root just fine, would it be possible to root to bare Android 4.3 on a s4 much like the google play edition, or would the cm custom rom be my best bet to that?
Thanks again take care!
I'll go ahead and order the phone since it comes with 30 day money back no reason needed!

If I was you i would call at&t give them your imei number and if you have a nice customer service rep they will give you a unlock code or you can go on at&t website and apply for a unlock code and if they approve you after 2 weeks they will give you the unlock code in your email. What I did to unlock my phone was used ebay and payed like 3$ and got a unlock code or you can view many websites from google and look for one to unlock your phone the prices range from 10$-30$.If your switching to straight talk you wont even need to unlock your phone cause straight talk runs on at&t network so all you have to do is go on the website by a new 4glte at&t sim card for 6.99 and pay the 45$ for the service pop it in and your good to go and it comes with one day free shipping. And unlocking has nothing to do with rooting unlocking is being able to use your phone on other networks like tmobile. To run a custom rom your phone firmware in the about section has to be on MDB or MDL.If its on MF3 you can safestrap but i dont know anything about that but if you on MDB or MDL you can look for a 4.3 GPE custom rom. http://galaxys4root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s4-roms/google-play-edition-rom-for-galaxy-s4/ this is where i got my GPE rom.
Doesn't need to be unlocked. Just buy the AT&T compatible SIM card from StraightTalk

Sorry I didn't get you quoted buddy had an appointment.
So I'd still be able to get lte speeds with a straight talk and use locked att phone with the sims?
That's great news for the future and I appreciate letting me know. I love gazelle now. Good thing I bought that s4 when I did because it's out of stock now. lol I think 350 is a steal for it either way!
As for the rooting part didn't mean to confuse the two, hopefully we'll be able to install 4.4 kitkat to an s4 soon. Though question if I did install a custom rom would I loose some of the features such as IR blaster?
I already have a straight talk sim card in my nexus 4 so I should be able to just transfer everything and my time to my new phone.

Yes you will get lte speeds since straight talk supports lte on at&t network now and it deoends what rom you run if its a stock GPE rom u=you might lose it but you probably could find a app for that but if its a touchwiz rom you will still have all your IR features. And it depends you can try to switch the straight talk sim card and see if you get LTE but i think you will need to buy the new straight talk lte sim card on their website.http://www.shopstraighttalk.com/bpd...&locale=en&market=GSM4&productFamily=simcards

Thanks again, I already have a straight sim card in my nexus 4 so it should be as simple as swapping it out. Do you think 350 was a good price paid for it used? It doesnt come with a battery so thats a worry but I bought it from gazelle

Sim-unlock verizon variant

Hello. I cant seem to find any service that can sim unlock a verizon htc 10. I am looking for a remote unlock, or a way I can be sure it will unlock, since I am buying the phone off Ebay. I would hate to buy it, to see it wont accept unlock codes.
Will converting it to US unlocked version (s-off, change cid, flash ruu) sim unlock it? Or is the sim lock permanent on verizons?

As I mentioned in the other thread the verizon 10 is not sim locked and will work with a gsm sim card, provided that the lte bands used by the GSM network are supported by the Verizon variant. You just need to switch the network mode to Global in Settings I believe.

Thanks for your replies. I have asked the person selling it, and he says his is locked to verizon, it will not accept gsm sim. The unlocked verizons are a bit more expensive. Is there any remote unlocking services for verizon? Even if it has bad ESN.

I don't know how much sense what the seller is telling you makes.
https://www.whistleout.com/CellPhones/Guides/verizon-unlocking-guide
As I said I used my stock verizon 10 with a gsm sim.
Regarding your question sorry I don't know. And I suspect the reason you don't find much info is because it's not needed.

Yes, you can ask for an unlock, but you have to meet certain criteria, and some phones being sold dont meet the criteria, or the owner does not feel like calling verizon and asking them to unlock it even when being free. If I buy one I can not ask them to unlock it since I will not be on thier network. I have fallen in that trap before. They ask you have it activated on their network so they can send the unlock. Stupid, but its their rules.

From Verizon's website:
We do not lock most phones or tablets that are activated with our postpay service, either during or after the term of your service contract or*Device Payment Plan*installment sales agreement.
We do not lock our 4G LTE devices, and no code is needed to program them for use with another carrier.
This is their official policy written on their site, so if the seller is trying to sell you phone that's somehow locked you should beware.

H918 question: possible to do bootloader unlock and root work without SIM card?

Hi,
I'm wondering whether it is possible to do bootloader unlocking and root work without SIM cards in the H918's. We currently have VZW service and VZW phones that we will be dumping and porting over to T-Mobile. I am lining up some H918's that are network locked but I don't think they will come with SIM cards.
I know we will need T-Mobile SIM cards to be able to get T-Mobile service, but I am wondering if it is possible to do the root/unlock/ROM work etc. without the SIM cards in and before we bring our phones in to have our VZW service terminated and the cell numbers ported over. Seems to me like the T-Mobile store is not the place for me and our new phones to be if our phones start pulling in an OTA as soon as they are activated on the T-Mobile network... I suspect they just wouldn't understand why I don't want it updating and why I am so serious about that....
Maybe the idea of bringing rooted phones (or phones I plan to root later) in to the store to let them mess with them is a bad idea. Would I be better off to order SIM kits online and sign up for service/switch online? Is that possible?
Thanks. I just want to stop any OTA's from messing up my plans with our new phones.

Don't need to worry about any OTA on the h918. Also don't need a SIM card for the phone. Just follow the noob easy guide and you will be fine.

Got the phones, all 3 of them were H91810U. Getting all my little duckies in a row... gonna be a long night haha.
