Factory Reset - Desire HD General

This is to share my experience that i encounter yesterday. I'm running on Stock Rooted Gingerbread 2.36.405.8.
Setting > SD & phone storage > Factory data reset
That 'Factory data reset' will also format/delete your SD card!
Spend nearly the whole night in trying to retrieve all the data that have being lost especially the photos taken. Also found out that the "HTC Sense" sync able to restore all my sms.
But still sad that some of the photos are not able to be retrieve....
EDIT: Thanks to Faugusztin for the info. Take Note: There is a check box if enabled/check, will erase the SD-Card too, in the Factory Reset.

never use that one.. always use from CMW

its just a sharing of experience. nothing is perfect, even CWM can 'c0ck' up too.
just to head up ppl abt the situation, cuz on Froyo, the same function didn't format/delete the SD card.

Maybe you didn't noticed, but there is a "Erase SD card" checkbox on the Factory data reset page. The card will be of course erased when you request it. But if you don't have that option checked, then the SD card will be left as is.

Yeah, you are right! I try it one more time without the checkbox, check, and yes the SD card is not formatted.
Maybe during my last time Factory Reset, i was too 'Gusto' to enable my battery to last 4 days, that i bull through without reading.
Anyway, thanks again!

Storage card missing after installing Background4AllTabs.cab

I installed the cab to be able to uninstall it if it did'nt work. After the installation I thought that the phone ran pretty slow so I decided to uninstall the cab. After the uninstall my Storage Card was all gone so I made a soft reset, but still no storage card. So i took out the SD and made another soft reset, still no changes. Then I made a hard reset and guess what? I'm still not able to see my storage card, not even from the Settings > System settings > Memory field.
Does anyone have a clue? I am running:
Dutty's_HD_WM6.5_R5_5.2.23004.5.0.60_1.59.709.0_Radio_52.62.25.34_1.14.25.24_Turbo
I'm sorry if I misplaced this thread.
Have you checked the card in something else to make sure it is working OK?

Heh, I was going to do that now. So I took out the card while the device was powered on, but then I could not find my other phone so I put the card back in. And voila! The card is working, but unfortunately it has been formatted for some reason
Well, I have a backup file on my computer so I only lost some pictures and text messages.
Thanks for the reply anyway

Strange Hard Reset keeping contacts?

Hi,
today i did an hard reset to the phone,i removed the sd card, i booted on the recovery menu with volup+home+power, then i did chose the factory settings/hard reset option (coz i wanted to clear the phonebook), then after that the clear cache one. When i started the phone it had all my contact list on the phone, with email info, etc etc... i think the sim card can't store mails, just numbers, so how can the android have the numbers and full names after a factory reset? (no sync since i haven't configured that yet, was just after restarting).
Sorry for being a bit noobish but i came from a touch pro 2, don't know android very well.
hmm okay i checked and the hard reset havent cleared the internal SD (i was talking about the external SD on the last post), cleared internal SD, but still after hard reset the contacts remain.
Ok, so now i tried:
- Hard Reset
- Format Internal SD
- Clear Cache
- Remove SIM card and microSD
and still the problem remains, it keeps my contact list dont know where, but after hard reset it still remains after booting, it says the contacts are stored on phone.
P.S.: Ok solved.... seems the recovery hard reset does not clear contact data, it was only cleared after i went to the phone settings and cleared it there, the recovery console didn't worked.

[Q] DVP LOCKED BY PASSWORD+CAN'T DO HARD RESET - Please HELP!

If You can be so kind and help me with THIS problem: I bought the phone with lock and wallpaper password (the seller keeps saying thtat knows nothing about it - I don't belive him - somebody had to set this password.) I cant find the way to reset this password to use the phone normally .
I tried to solve the problem by replaceing SD CARD but:
When i pull out 8GB original SD card out (SANDISK CLASS 4)- phone starts normally and doesn't ask about password. When i put the card in again -phone is locked again and what is more showing info that next possible try to enter the password is after 1690 minutes!!! I put in another SD card from my HTC HD2 (SAN DISK 8GB , CLASS 2) and have made a phone reset (trough menu).Than i made the reset witht pulling out battery during the screen turnes black during restart. It didn't help - the phone doesn't see this card and shows only 15,7 MB of space. Mybe I should buy another new SD card and try again with this one...? Any ideas? I dont what to do...Thanks

I put a reply up on the Dell forums for you
Thanks - but here is my answe-post on Your advise and continuation of my problems...
Well - I dont know if it makes sense or not but the facts are:
1. My phone starts and works without any sd card in slot - shows only 15,7 MB of memory then
2. If i follow the process You explained my phone does not go in to the process of hard/sof reset. I cant make him to go to any initial process/screen. By the way - after pulling out battery/replaceing sd/putting battery in - You mean the phone should automaticly contiuing this process of restart or i should turn power off ? Franlky saying i have to turn it on again because after puting battery in again nothong happens.
3. After restart situation is the same - phone didn't integrate system with SD card - shows only 15,7 MB of sapce
Any ideas what is wrong with it? Or mybe I am doing sth wrong?
Any other ideas of resetting this password and without replaceing oryginall SD CARD?

Ok....this is weird.
without an SD card, the memory should read around 408mb or so. So, what you're saying cannot b indicates something is not right. So, lets look at what is known:
1. SD card is not an interchangable item in WP7. If the device starts without a card. Then proceed without a card.
2. Stock memory without a card is around 400mb.
3. A hard reset and a soft reset are 2 different things. A soft reset, you can pull the battery. A hard reset will force you to set you device back up from scratch From what you describe, this is not happening.
So, step by step.
1. If your device starts without your SD card, pull the card and start your device.
2. On your device, go to Settings, then about, and choose reset your device.
3. Let the device rest, following any instructions on the screen. Eventually the device will reset, reboot, and ask you to set it up. Go ahead and log in with a Windows LIVE ID, but do not install anything else.
4. Once this is complete, go to Settings, About and read the memory setings. It should read about 400mb.
The device should now work. Does it?
If it does, then do this.
1. Go to settings, then about, and reset your device. Allow the device to begin to reboot.
2, While the screen is still black, pull the battery. Put the SD card. Put the battery back in, Start the device and allow the setup to continue.
3. Log in with a Windows Live ID and let the setup complete.
4. Go to settings, about, and look at the memory info. You should now see something like 15.9g instead of 15.7m.
If the first part does not work then something is wrong with the device. Most likely, no one here can help. You might have to call Dell for help...though there is little they can do.
let me know what happens...

I just thought of something else.....long shot. what if this is not an OS password but rather a SIM lock password or even a an unlock code required for a different sim in a branded phone?
Is your sim from TMOBILE?
Since you still haven't got this sorted, have you considered the possibility that the previous owner had an exchange account set up on the phone and that the exchange administrator mandated a password/strict security settings on the device?
That doesn't really explain why the lock remains after a wipe though....

His phone is not doing the things it should do. He claims he cannot hard reset it. So that makes me wonder about a few things.....but heck....he hasn't responded so maybe he got it working...
Hey guys. So I might have bought this phone off of eBay. So, now I'm stuck with it. A hard reset with the SD card out doesn't reset. I mean...it kind of does. If I change the theme color or save wifi passwords, I turn off the phone and turn it back on and all the settings are gone. It doesn't go through the setup, everything is just gone. A hard reset followed by a battery pull and new SD card doesn't work either. I think the hard reset just isn't working. I don't know how hard resets work, but seeing how the phone doesn't remember themes and wifi passwords (even the time and date...it resets to the default wrong time) when I turn it off and on, I don't think it can remember that it's supposed to do a hard reset when it turns back on after the beginning of the restart after I click "Reset". Again, I have no idea if that's even how hard resets work. Well...sorry that was long. Any ideas? Am I just stuck with a broken phone? I can get it in to "Download Mode". Can I install a ROM that way? Thanks!
Buy a new card, you can either go with the same card as the original Sandisk Class 4 8gb or buy a larger card.
Leave the original card in the phone and go to about > reset phone and reset it. Once the DELL logo appears take the battery out and put your new card in. Once that is done the phone will be reset fully.
This is the procedure when you replace the standard card included when you buy the phone off DELL.
I bought a new Venue Pro from Expansys and used this method to replace the included Sandisk 8GB card with a Sandisk 32GB card. Be careful about buying cheap 3rd party cards though.
Thanks for your reply, but the original SD has a password on it. A reset without the SD and a battery pull and a new SD should work the same way, right? The point is to get the phone all ready to reset the phone and when it turns off to restart and reset the phone, you pull the battery and put the SD in to trick it into formatting that SD, right? I figure it would work the same without an SD card. I think the problem is in the actual reboot process. The phone can't seem to remember that it's supposed to do a hard reset.
Pretty sure it should do, as long as it goes into the hard reset process then it should work the same as if there was a SDCard in it already.
Put the device into update mode by starting the phone with power + camera + vol down then use the WP7 Update Cab Sender to send the stock rom
Alright. Now we're getting somewhere. Okay. I found the stock cab for the Venue Pro. If I use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1240455 this tool with that cab, will the phone be reset to its factory setting when I boot up? I am wondering if the PIN lock on the unlock screen will still be there after doing this. Thanks.
Well try it and find out.

I almost bought that one a few weeks ago, but after doing some researching I found out the Dell Venue Pro is a little more resistant to being wiped than other WP7 devices, and I didn't want to risk having a phone I couldn't use. Apparently on most there's a key combo you can do to cause a reset on boot, but not on the DVP. On the DVP you have to start the hard reset with the SD it's expecting to be there. (which you can't do because of the password)
The one thing I found though that I thought had potential was this thread. If he posts the Lightning Service tools there I think those have a very good chance of resetting it for you if that other tool doesn't reset it for you.

Is that the new world record?
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App

Very strange thing, I got my lost data BACK after using Factory data RESET.

Yesterday i shutdown my HD2 tmous and took out the sim card and sd card to another phone.
After about twenty minutes, i booted HD2 with only sim (no sd card).
Then HD2 booted up with settings wizard (just like you flashed and booted for the first time).
After setting the wizard i found HD2 lost all the data i had before, like apps, sms, contacts, launcher screen layout and so on.
Also i got a message on the notification bar which said storage almost full.
So i entered the SD&phone storage settings and found that the available internal phone storage is 0.00b.(of course the sdcard free space is 0 too, because i didn't insert it).
Then i inserted the sdcard and choose "Factory data reset" option.
After the reboot...
Guess what...
Everything l lost just came back again...
I really cant figure it out...
Can anybody please tell me the reason?
Thank you!
My phone info is:
HD2 T-mobile 1024
Radio: 2.14.50.04
ROM: RafDroid HD 4.0.2(no ext partition on sdcard)
SDCARD: KINGSTON 8GB C4
At last, I wanna give my best thanks to all the ROM makers for their great works!
Yea, that's because you have ticked in "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore" under Settings -> Privacy
That, or the phone did not "recognize" the SD Card (which am guessing has your data / SD-EXT), and did not wipe it.
Initializing the SD-EXT happens at boot - if a SD-EXT is not found at boot, the ROM will disable SD-EXT until the next boot (by which time it "found" your data again!)

Making atrix safe to sell (preparations)

Can someone help me out it would be greatly appreciated. How would I make sure my phone is safe to sell as far as security reasons go? I dont want any of my personal information still on here. I'm running cm7 and i just did a factory reset and connected my phone to my computer and moved everything from mnt/emmc to my computer but when i go under file manager on my phone there seems to still be some files left behind? are these safe to leave? How would i go about preparing my phone to sell. Some of the files in /mnt/emmc are stuff like .spotlight-v100, .Trashes, .adobe, .taggedFriendPhotos, LOST.DIR, and theres some other stuff aswell
You should definitely format the internal storage, use your computer. There's nothing left after that.

Okay how do I do that. I'm on mac. And under security>factory reset it told me it would wipe the internal storage but I guess that didn't really do anything. So after I connect it to my computer then what do I do?

Ouch, sorry mate, I never even touched a Mac..
Never touched a mac, but
in windows you open the file manager. find your device , should be listed as a "usb storage" device. Right click and choose format.
ta-da!
H'm it seems like the factory reset should have got rid of these files. Should I worry about them? And would formatting on my computer get rid of these files?

what kind of files you talking about?
".spotlight-v100, .Trashes, .adobe, .taggedFriendPhotos, LOST.DIR, and theres some other stuff aswell." Folders like these....and there not deleting even after a factory reset
You can always use fastboot and erase userdata, data, cache etc
factory reset doesnt touch your internal storage. it only wipes /data and /system
use the FORMAT sdcard option in the settings....
you could do a fastboot -w and then install a fruitcake, can't you? i've never used -w before, dunno if it deletes everything on the internal storage or not.
I have gone through quite a bit of phones until i got to this one and all you really need to do is restore factory defaults and keep your sd card

except that this one has INTERNAL storage where a lot of other phones do not....especially most HTC phones
you have to format internal sd or there will be lots of data left on the phone

Exactly. The Atrix has its internal SD and an external. If you go into Menu > Settings > Storage, you should be able to wipe the memory of your two SD cards.

One problem here though, cm7 doesn't properly format. Once you try doing this you can't mount.

Thanks though mate, now I know for when it comes time to sell this phone
