You know those folders we have? ereader, games etc... - Acer Iconia A500

Why oh why can't we create new empty ones to use on our own? Also it seems there's no home screen folders in Honeycomb.

If anything, I'd love to be able to change the background on those Acer cubby-hole screens. They are a tad to, um, off... for me.

yeah they don't seem to match any other theming on the device.

I think we need a [DEV] to root around and find out where those wallpapers are so we could try and push our own (overwrite them with our own).

Do folders exist in Honeycomb?

Not that I'm aware of. My wifes Archos 101 w/2.2 does but I guess they removed that for Honeycomb. Vanilla'wise, I mean.
EDIT
I do use Circle Widget, so that sates my need for folders.

do you mean Circle Launcher? https://market.android.com/details?id=de.dbware.circlelauncher&feature=search_result

Yep - sorry my mistake. Circle Launcher. Works well.

What's really annoying is that apps disappear from the folder when you update them.
Has anyone tried Folder Organizer on Honeycomb?

Autoapporganizer
Apps Organzier
Circle Launcher
all so much better than the default Acer ones.

I use folder organizer. It works pretty well, but it shrinks the app icons a little bit. I'd rather they stay full sized. When you update an app, it sometimes disappears from folder organizer and you have to add it again.

Renaming a Folder on Home

Is it possible to rename the folders that you create on the home screen?
Am I really stuck with multiple "Folder" icons with no indication of what could be in them?
Thanks for any help!
Open the folder and long press on the title bar. You will then get a text box so you can change the name.
Awesome! Thank you!
Pretty much everyday I'm finding new settings to play with on this thing.
What about putting folders into the AppTray? I know that some themes and home extenders will let you, but I don't want to have the added overhead of those things eating up memory... plus I get too many FCs on things when I use themes.
(I'm using the most recent, stable, CyanogenMod btw)
There is a different launcher which is here. This might be what you are looking for.
Thanks!... I'll check that out when I'm home from the office. It looks like it's just what I'm looking for.
Update: I went home for lunch. Yeah, this is perfect. I tried the Dark Hero theme and this launcher was bundled in with it... but too many things wouldn't run with the theme, so I dumped it. Thanks again!

aditional pulldown "tray"?

The notifications tray is great, easily pops down most of the time and the apps tray (with ALL the apps) is just as nice.
But i would like a extra tray for settings and/or favorite apps instead of clogging the "desktop" with shortcuts.
like a tray that flips out from the side of the screen.
is it even possible to add a off-screen container such as the above mentioned dropdown/up trays?
and if yes, are there any available at this time?
I know this isn't going to answer your query, but what is wrong with just populating one of your home screens with shortcuts?
I mean, if you do this with one of the screens either side of the "centre" home screen, you effectively get what you require.
Regards,
Dave
I do use the screens as placeholders for my everyday apps, but most of the time i need a app thats on another screen, meaning i have to go look for it.
With a pulldown tray that would pop out from the side, i could keep my most used apps more conviniently located, just a tap away, instead of 1 to 6 swipes away.
since the apps and notifications are dropdown/up i feel its missing dropdown left/right, witch is the real reason im wondering.
it would be great with apps on one side and settings on the other, then i wouldnt use more than one or two homescreens for widgets only.
I seem to recall one of the home replacement apps had this...I can't recall which.
I know, what you mean.
It's not so nice, to put hundreds of widgets and Shortcuts on the screen.
I don't like it on Windows Desktop, too.
Therefor, I have loaded Apps Organizer from Market.
I put my Apps in 5 Folders, sorted.
Is that something to try for you?

actually you can do that with the stock sense widgets, as there are folders for the homescreen. afaik they don't support custom icons though.

I will buy the first homescreen replacement launcher that has this implemented

Android i good. The scrolling homescreen with widgets is good. Only one thing is terrible: The app launcher. No categories/catalogs i launcher?!
So you have to scroll along xx times until you finally spot the application you're looking for.
Here are suggestions on different solutions:
When you open the app launcher you see custom folders ex. "Office, Games, Multimedia, Utils, Settings". When you install a app, you get a question in what folder to put the app link". Besides the folders in the launcher you can have a option to also see latest run apps.
This solution would show the usual vertical scroll down app list. But with a important twist. A line, or the backgroundcolor is different, when you are scrolling on a different category, + a OSD text stays front telling on what category you are, ex "Work, Entertainment, Hobbies, Health, Internet".
One launcher actually has almost made it, don't know if it's Launcher Pro or ADW launcher. You can have apps in different groups and click between them. Only thing missing is name of the categories so you see where you're at. And option to disable the group "All"
I'm pretty certain that Slick UI will have this when it launches.

To be fair, MIUI doesn't even have an app drawer, it just puts all of your apps on the launcher and you're forced to put every app into a folder.
Hell, vanilla Android has folders, which is exactly what MIUI is using.

If you want categories in your home-replacement. I suggest you head over to my website http://futurinnovations.blogspot.com/ to see what I am working on. If you are a dev yourself, you can help all that you can. It's still a work in progress and I haven't come up with any fancy renderings of it, yet. I do, however, have some sketches of what it is supposed to look like and how it functions. Tell what you think of it. It will be the second post from the top (under my live wallpaper screen shots).
DxTop has an amazing implementation of categorized app drawer - with corresponding live folders.

Liking it...mostly.
Adds a new dimension to wallpaper wonkiness, unfortunately.
My wallpaper (via wizardrii) is not properly centered in landscape mode. Have not fiddled with it yet.
Anyone have any tips?
I will definitely be purchasing this for my girlfriend's 10.1.. thanks for the tip, it looks great!
Am loving it just make sure if your rubbish bin bar is located at the bottom you enable auto scaling of desktop when bin bar is used, otherwise you won't be able to add icons to the docking bar !

Wallpapers aren't rendered properly, and my dock bar just disappeared on mine. Still has a ways to go on tablets.
Dock bar going away is a common "problem" with ADW. Turn off hidden dockbar in the settings, turn off gestures.
I went ahead and set mine up without a dockbar, and with just the ADW settings menu item in the top right. Removed the trash bin as well (long-press then Remove from the desktop works just fine).
"Endless" page scrolling, page-turn animation of Tilt, 350 turn speed, 15 desktop bounce, and a theme that has a transparent top menu bar. Desktop has 9x7 columns/rows, icons scaled to 95%, density hack off. App drawer is 6x6, in 4D vertical scroll.
Basically, it looks pretty much like Honeycomb at a glance, but without the one-inch "tap space" wasted on the left and right screen edges. It's much faster and smoother. About the only performance issue I've had is that it doesn't handle "card" widgets like YouTube, Market or News360 as smoothly as stock, when you go to "fling" a card away.
Maybe I'm just getting old and simple, but I don't really see the point of having the excessive customization of ADW on a Honeycomb tab. I have my homescreen setup with two widgets and about 12 regular icons, then the next screen over has some lesser used stuff. If I need any other apps I just open the app drawer and easily locate them. I mean, it's neat to make things whiz-bang and all, but from a usability perspective there's already so much overkill built in to Honeycomb that ADW doesn't seem worth the time.
On my phone, ADW is great, however. Now get off my lawn.

You don't have to use the power of ADW, it's just there waiting to be harnessed if you want it.
In fact, you can use ADW to simplify it, for example you can delete unused home screens, unlike stock Honeycomb. Doing things like adding widgets or changing wallpapers is also cleaner and quicker than the flashy Honeycomb interface. It's simpler.
I'm a card carrying member of the Curmudgeon's Club of Canada, by the way.

So... You are saying that you need adw
I like simple too, and adw help me doing that.
I mean, I do not need the 3d cubic scrolling effects, neither than the futuristic widget selection screen, or the quick search bar at the top.
I didn't choose to display the dock too in adw.
And it is so fast, close to the ipad smoothness.

It is not a problem but a feature hehe. If you slide one the dock, it disappear. I you slide again it appears. I think you can disable somewhere that movement.
ADW still sucks on the Tab..not only are the card/live widgets like Youtube slow to flick like someone said, but the worst thing is that for certain widget, like the Digital Clock stock Tab one...it looks fine when using the Tab landscape at first, then every single time I rotate to portrait view, the widget re-draws for new orientation and both left and right sides of the widget are not cut off. This does not adjust/fix itself instantly like stock launcher does and the only way to really fix it is to re-add widget or sometimes turn screen off and on.
I like the smoothness of the launcher/drawer but I aint dealing with this **** where a widget gets screwed up every single time....too annoying to deal with. Why is this such a hard thing to get right?? Is there a fix for this or no? I am not resizing the widget to begin with btw...just adding it as normal size. The homescreen size I use is 8 columns and 7 rows btw, just like stock.
Oh and why in the app drawer, the the top still unmatching/not dimmed like the rest of the drawer below it? Looks so stupid. They should dim it too and still keep the buttons in the top right corner, ughh.
EDIT: Here, compare landscape to portrait when flipped. Not only does that Digital Clock widget get cut off, but also look at the Wireless Widget..it looks ridiculous now.
EDIT2: I unchecked the ADW option for resizing widgets to fit blah blah but the same thing still happens where the Clock widget, for example, gets cut off after going vertical.. although the Wifi Widget looks a little less ridiculous now when turning. Anyone know about the widget issue though??

The 15 minute refund policy really sucks, especially for apps like ADW EX where you really need some time to get a feel for how you like it and check out all the customizations. To get around it you can always buy it, pull the apk from /data/apps (requires root), refund it, and re-install the program using the pulled apk file. This way you can take your time to play around with the app before deciding if you want to keep it. If you do go ahead and re-buy it from market. If you decide not to buy it do the honest thing and uninstall the program.

[Q] Anyone tackling the hideous folder background?

So far I don't really mind the stock launcher, it's alright. I'm a long time user of Nova on my GNex and generally liked the options for folder backgrounds.
The biggest complaint I've got about the launcher so far are the hideous backgrounds and icon ordering. Is anyone working on a mod to change that, or seeing that it is part of the stock launcher, are we pretty much screwed?
Any info on how to change them would be awesome, they are the biggest problem i have with the stock launcher. Thanks!
I'm not sure what you're talking about but if you hit the menu key you should be able to sort them how you want.

I've attached two screenshots. The background is the tan or blue square, and you'll see how stock layers them. Thats what I'm looking for.
Lol.... Stop me if I'm wrong but can you just drag the icons out the folders and drag any icon you want into them?
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
Sure, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. Maybe I'm being unclear.
The UI for a folder in LG's skin is an ugly box, and they just put the icons as little tiny icons. To me it is very ugly. In stock Android they layer them as you can see.
What I'm looking for is a possible mod to change the look of a folder on the homescreen. That is really all.

I totally understand your point and I think so too that's an ugly folder implementation and a shame to an otherwise awesome Launcher, also once you have items in the folders, you can't have them reordered alphabetically. I'm sure there are ways of changing at least the folder design (if rooted of course).
I'll try to find some time to do something about it, but don't hold your breath okay?
Cheers!
As far as someone working on making a better interface, I would think that there is a mod out for that, but I'd have to check on it.
If you want to reorder the icons, open up said hideous folder, click and hold the icon you want to move for around 2 seconds, then move it to your desire location WITHIN the folder. I reorganize my icons all the time.
For me, coming from 3 years of vanilla android, I like some aspects of the LG skin, but there are definitely things a lot of little things that I miss from stock android.
I hope that I answered, at the very least, one of your questions.

Hideous or not, these are probably the most useful folders I've ever used, to me. Have any of you tried resizing the folder? You can make the folders whatever size you want and scroll through all of the app/shortcut icons. These are the only thing keeping me from using a custom launcher because I haven't found a way to duplicate the scrollable folders.

I figured out a way to insert the stock AOSP folder PNG's into the LGHome.APK in the necessary spots but the problem is you would also need to build the framework (i think) for the icons in the folders to appear/arrange themselves like AOSP does. Even after i have put in the stock PNG's the launcher just arranged them the same as stock.
So is it possible to replace the 10 available folder icons with 10 other ones of your own? Sure. Get it to be perfectly AOSP, maybe, but going to take more skillz than i have.

I'm with you 100%. This is the one thing that no other launcher I've tried offers (admittedly I haven't tried that many, since I prefer a minimalist approach and most launchers seem overloaded with "features").
The stock LG launcher really feels better than most custom ones to me.
My ideal would be a home page/screen with scrollable folders and a dock that can hold widgets and multiple app drawers. Does anyone know if such a thing exists?
Folder look
I use Nova Launcher. Folder settings to 'custom'. then I choose a image of a folder with a transparent background (alpha channel)
