Is it possible to root the official Desire HD OTA build?
Im almost certain that it isnt. If you want to root your phone you will need to downgrade first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003

Will I lose root by installing it? At the moment I have RA-Hero 1.6.2 and the rooted HTC 1.5 ROM
Yes, you must wait for someone who root it so don't update but you can flash some roms like VillainRoms or Cronos or Modaco which are based on the 2.1 update !

you dont just loose root, the official update will replace ur current recovery and hboot, untill someone finds an exploit, the hero official update may neva be rooted
will updating OTA from a rooted phone will unroot my phone automatically ?if yes will it delete everything ?
now i have stock 2.1 update 1 and root
If flashing v2.2 RUU will unroot your phone.
Be aware that 2.2 can not be rooted, so this will be a one way ticket. Ofcorse unrevoked is working to root 2.2 also.

Hi everyone,
I have a htc desire z and have it perm rooted and S-OFF.
Now i want to go back to stock with my Nandroid backup i've made before flashing other roms.
I can go back to my nadroid backup but then i want to update my stock rom with the update that came out some time ago. But for that you have to Unroot and S-On again... HOWWWWW CAN I DO THIS???
Which update do you want to apply to the stock ROM ? You don't have to unroot and S-ON to apply an OTA update, and currently all the known OTAs are rootable (you will lose root but keep S-OFF if you got it via gfree).

If you have custom recovery (CWM) then I think the OTA won't work. But you can always just flash the stock recovery back on (e.g. via fastboot or flash_image) then you should be ok.
Or you can just flash the 1.72 ROM complete, though you will lose all your data/settings.

So... if i flash stock nandroid back.. and uninstall custom recovery what is ROM manager i guess, i can update stock with the OTA update?
Or how do i get rid of the cwm otherwise?
Sorry if i'm asking stupid questions thnxx for your help!

Yeah just flash the stock recovery back on via fastboot or flash_image, then you should be able to apply the OTA, assuming you haven't done other stuff that might break the update (e.g. removing stock apps).

Ok, i'm gonna try it now. First uninstall rom manager and then try then ota update.
But i'll loose my root you're saying... is it rootable again for now? Couse i understand that otherwise i can't flash another rom for a while...?

The 1.72 DZ OTA ? Yes, that is rootable via the psneuter method now, it's just you cannot use gfree to get S-OFF at 1.72, that's why a downgrade may be necessary for some (i.e. if you are at 1.72 and S-ON).

similar question here. I didn't made a backup for the stock recovery module. If so how can i restore the stock recovery? Are there any available on xda?

Well, you can downgrade to 2.1 but you won't downgrade the hboot, so you won't be able to root neither or install another ROM. You will have stock 2.1 unrootable.
Be aware of that.
Essentially, you are now stuck with your official 2.2 update. There is nothing you can do now. (Except maybe find someone with an XTC Clip)
I upgraded my wife's g2 to the official tmobile gingerbread release (used the pre rooted deodexed gingerbread rom) and need to return the phone to tmobile for an exchange. Before the upgrade to gingerbread I rooted and enabled permanent s-off.
1. Will I have any issues just flashing the stock tmobile 2.2 rom through clockwork recovery?
2. Once downgraded will I have to root again to go back and undo the permanent s-off
3. Is there a rooted stock rom available to flash? Want to be able to restore apps + settings while awaiting a replacement?
dig around the forums for an original PC10IMG.zip of the shipped rom and flash that through bootloader
Any issues using the rom in this thread. Looks like its a flashable .zip file.

Can I flash the above rom through the bootloader? Want to make sure I don't brick the phone before I do this.

Hi !
You can not downgrade at all because the install of an older PC10IMG.zip will give you a "main version too old" error.
Normally you solve this by using misc_version to change the main version string in the misc partition.
But to do this you need (temporary) root access.
All published temp-root methods (rage and it's derivatives like visionary, z4root, ... - psneuter - gingerbreak) have been patched in the official T-Mobile G2 Gingerbread release.
So enough background info for now - This firmware version is not rootable and can not be downgraded (for now).
Have fun - Guhl
Of course we will post and update if the situation changes
I have this gingerbread rom installed. Can anyone confirm that this version cannot be downgraded.
Flashable version of PC10IMG_Vision_Gingerbread_S_TMOUS_2.13.531.8 Leak, that football posted, and yes this is the final release.
Rooted
Deodexed

Wait, you got a rooted version of it installed?
If yes, you can use misc_version to set the main version back to a lower or equal value of the rom you want to install and then install the PC10IMG.zip through hboot.

how i thought you need temproot for that
So I flashed the rooted gb rom above through clockwork. Will I brick my phone if I flash the stock rom I linked above through clockwork? Is it really this hard to go back to stock?
I think there is a lot of miscommunication going on here. I think the problem is that users are having a hard time differentiating between the unrootable leak and the rooted leak.
I'm having to send my g2 back also, I'm rooted, s-off'd, and using the rooted version of the tmob gb leak. ive got cwm installed too, should I be able to use the pc10img to completely wipe, set s-on and go back to 2.2?
