Weird Problem Sideloading a Few Apps - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, this one is new to me. My Nook is running 1.2.0, rooted. Earlier tonight I went to install AngryBirds from the market...it wouldn't install. So I pulled the apk from my vibrant and went to sideload it with ADB and got:
[INSTALL_FAILED_CONTAINER_ERROR]
I've heard of this before, so I tried to remove:
/mnt/secure/asec/smdl2tmp1.asec
only it doesn't exist. I've tried installing it into the internal and external SD thinking maybe it was a file size issue...no go with either one. Any ideas on this one? I'm sure it's something simple, my brain just can't think of it this late.
Edit: I can get it to install by removing the microSD. Hmmmm, can anyone provide a technical explanation for what the hold up is? Is it a function of the app wanting to install to SD natively? I've got plenty of room on the SD card.

need help: about to smash the phone on the wall

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
need help. this is quickly going from my favorite phone to a PIECE OF CRAP I WANT TO SMASH ON THE WALL.
there's a thread i made yesterday. short version after rebooting the phone none of the apps in the sd card were accessible, the phone couldn't mount the sd card, and nothing would install in market. i flashed new roms, restored nandroid backups, nothing would fix the issue. finally narrowed it down to some file on the sd card. deleted all the files from the sd card and restored my last good nandroid and got the phone running, just had to re-install my apps.
i've spent all day installing all my apps (200+). everything was working just fine again. until i decide to reboot the phone. and now I'M BACK TO THE SAME ISSUE. none of the sd card apps work, in settings if i try to unmount the sd card i get a FC, switchpro can't change the mount status (says updating status but never changes the icon, so it's either unmounted or mounted, but wont change it), and nothing will install in the market.
i put back my original memory card (that i used yesterday in my testing) and the phone worked fine again. i installed root explorer (was on sd card, now to the phone). put my memory card back.
i am able to browse the sd card with root explorer. gallery sees the images from the sd card. beautiful widgets sees the skin files in the sd card. but the OS wont run any of my apps that are in the sd card and wont let me install anything.
i'm 100% if i delete all the files from the sd card and boot again, everything will work....but what the hell is causing this? i dont have any experimental/alpha apps that would do any damage after being installed. just a few apps and many games.
from my end it feels like there is a file that gets created at one point, that after rebooting the phone makes it so the phone can't mount the sd card, thus not able to install apps, run sd card apps, etc.
please give me some guidance here. i can't use my phone if i can't isntall apps!!!
i got so pissed almost smashed it
i'm using MetroDroid 1.0, rooted (nand too), customized matted blues theme. keep in mind the problem does not go away with a fresh install of the rom, or with a nand restore of cm6....i'm pretty sure it's down to a file issue within the sd card?
There is a file or app being installed on the sd card that is causing the sd card to corrupt.

you really need 200 apps?
****, i'd say therein lies the root of your problems...
have you tried installing each app one at a time, and rebootung after each one? Eventually you'll run into the same issue, but at least then you'll know which app is causing it.

That's a lot of apps to go through to find the culprit.
I would try reformatting your card. Then go about installing your apps again. Besides that I have no idea, could be an app or a retarded lemon of a phone.
^^ what he said... Don't just delete the files on your memory card, format it!

Well, yeah, its also a lot of rebooting - its more of a last resort kind of suggestion. To be used right before throwing it at the wall.

well according to titanium backup i ahve about 310 apps installed. i have many games, most of which i play. then i have several live wallpapers, widgets, tools, media players, news apps, messaging apps, etc. i have everything organized with app organizer and it doesnt feel like that many.

that's the thing. yesterday i reformatted in-phone and i also formatted in the computer. then put the files back on (made a backup first) and this happened after installing the apps. i think i rebooted maybe 3 times in the process of installing all the apps today. the last reboot was only to test the theory that on MetroDroid data only works if you reboot with Wi-Fi off. so i really wasn't expecting the whole thing to stop working again!
EDIT: where in the memory card exactly are the app files?

no need for all the pointless swearing. next time post more civil
Unless you have transferred said apps to your SD card they will not show.

really? thank you for your helpful post. i posted a very detailed and civil thread yesterday and where were you with helpful information? nowhere. and where is your helpful information now? nowhere. so why even come in the thread if you're not going to help?
@toast - thanks for editing the OP. i dont usually make the pissed off kind of threads but this time it served its purpose. the last two days i had a very well written, detailed thread explaining everything asking for help. i renamed it several times. bumped it 2-3 times. all i got was two responses. i post this one with profanity in the title and look at how many answers already. some of which seem to be pointing me somewhere right hopefully!
it's very frustrating to see picture threads and mod threads get useful (and useless) comments every minute and threads asking for help (i've seen this happen with my own threads in the past and many others) get ignored. specially considering by the time I get to ask for help i've spent hours trying to fix it on my own and researching before asking here.
-----------------
VOODOOTRIP i put back most of the files that were in the memory card prior to reformatting it. anyways i installed all the apps again today after that and haven't reformatted yet (what's the point?) so the apps are in the sd card. just need to figure out how to get the phone to access the card!
EDIT: i renamed all the folders in the sd card (without reformatting or deleting anything) and booted into the phone. was able to mount/unmount the card and install apps from market. so it is a file in there...now to figure out which one!
You can access the card from root exp. or from Astro? ie it's still showing the extension right? When was the last time it was working properly? What rom were you on when it first started happeneing? Have you downloaded any non market apps since then? Are all your roms on current update? You said you have tried both a sense and AOSP rom right?
i was able to narrow it down....it's a file within .androidsecure...so now i have to sort through 131 files in there. but at least there's a light at the end of the tunnel!
with .androidsecure renamed i am able to install apps, mount/unmount. etc. so it's got to be something in there that is loading when the phone loads...i wonder what?
i'll update when i find out in case anyone comes across this problem too.

see info above (quickly....yes, no (astro is in sd card), about three days ago, MetroDroid, since then couldn't download/install anything, everything is updated, tried both CM6.0 and this rom. but see above. since problem is a file in the .androidsecure folder, whether i was wiping and going to cm6 or back to sense that file wouldn't be modified by the recovery wipe correct?
I know the problem its the 200 apps or one app not getting along with another app. You are the first person that I have come across that has that many apps 200+ apps is a crazy amount of apps.

well there are 131 asec files in that folder. so at least 131 apps + the ones on the phone memory.
but why the surprise with the amount of apps? isn't that why we get 16gb and 32gb memory cards?
the problem file was
se.nena.nenamark1-1.asec
for the benchmark NenaMark
that was the last app i had installed before i overclocked my phone into rebooting. and that's when the problems starting. hindsight is always 20/20
new development. i installed another app and rebooted and the same error happened. NenaMark was off from the android_secure folder but i was back to 131 files. i removed some other apps and booted again and everything is fine. so it looks like 130 .asec files are the limit? at 131 files I get the same problem?
moved 130 of the 131 files back and the phone ran fine. put that one file in, and problems came back. removed the file and all is well again.
I was having problems with my phone and once I accidents ran a check disk via win 7 it found and fixed some corruption, also my symptoms went away. In fact even my video recordings loom much better.

ok so i rooted my 1.2 NC with ManualNooter 4.6.16 using CWM 3.0.2.8
started it up fine. but i dont have any market? am i missing a file? i searched google and someone said use apk-enabler-1-1a-signed.zip for non-market apps. but i dont know if that will fix my problem so i can download from the app store like i use to on 1.1.. any ideas?
also my micro sd 4gb wont let me format it. tried disk managment way and also the hp tool. says its write protected. its weird cause thats the microsd card that i put the manual nooter on.gahhh any help pleaseee?
1. I don't root so I can't help
2. Use MiniTool Partition Wizard to re-format the card
im trying to use the program you suggested votinh.. but it just keeps saying pending operations and does nothing. ive tried other computers and it wont let me partition it e ither
so no one has any idea why i dont have the market even though i used the latest manualnooter?
bump bump bump
1. Running CM7 on SDcard, so have no idea.
2. Using your Nook to format your card.
how do i know what CM im using? and i bought a little usb attachment. insert the microsd into the usb tool and plubin to usb. bought a new microsd card so i dont need to worry to much about my old one, BUT i still want to know which CM i need to use and how to tell which one im using? im not super pro when it comes to this stuff but i try to read the walkthrough thoroughly. AND for the issue with not having the market even though i used the ManualNooter 4.6.16? cause i cant seem to find anyone else having this problem?
rooted my nook back to the way i had it with 1.1. guess il just wait a few months til all bugs are worked out

[Q] Instructions for CM10/JB

OK... I've tried to re-work my install so that I can run Jelly Bean on my NC.
It fails.
I get:
1) System preparing to shutdown (even though is should say "preparing to shut down"); or:
2) system hangs;
or:
1) "Please put on first partition of this SD card
the name should start with update-, cm, or diff_ and end with .zip"
I see CM7 installs, I see CM9 installs, and I see CM7-10 install instructions, but nothing that specifically delineates the exact steps I must follow to boot my NC into Jelly Bean via SD Card. "Well, you can replace this with that in the instructions" doesn't seem to cut it. I keep getting errors. It all seems to meld from one set on instructions to another, and it becomes unclear what direction you must go to get the results you want.
Can someone *please* update the install instructions for CM10/JellyBean for Windows, Mac, and Linux? Working with old CM7 instructions that may or may not work doesn't cut it. You're losing your audience.
Thanks!

Ahhh, yes. Found it. They helped. Thank you!
I now have Jelly Bean running on CM10 on my Nook Color. It was a bit choppy until I found the processor speed setting and ramped it up to 1000Mhz. Now it is quite sweet, even running off the SD card.
One issue: Google Play won't download the apps to the Nook - or at least I can't tell, because I can't see what's on the emmc: File Manager won't let me see off the SD card ,even in SuperUser mode. So getting apps on this thing might be a bit of a challenge. Any ideas?

Google Play Store downloads apps to /cache which is on emmc for the SD install. But they are only temporarily stored there until they are automatically installed on the SD. I'm not sure what your issue is. Are you saying they aren't installing? And on file manager, you went in the app to settings, general, and selected root?

They are not installing. Just walked into /root/, and there's virtually nothing in cache - or anywhere else, for that matter - nothing in terms of (non-cm) software or apps, at least. And Google Play didn't download them - but says they're installed. Very weird.

They are not showing in your launcher? When play store has finished installing, it deletes the temporary download. Did it say 'downloading' within play store?
Can you go to /data with your file manager and create and delete a temporary file? I just want to know if your SD has become temporarily read only.

They are not showing in launcher. Play store does nothing after purchasing/re-installing an app. It never says "downloading." Nothing happens. Nada.
As a test, reading your post, I tried to create a new file in /data with the name of "testing/txt" - it was completed successfully.
I'm thinking the store has issues with my setup...

In CWM select "partition SD card" to allow apps to install. Seems your SD card size is stuck at 300mb. Happened to my 16gb Sandisk. Would not recognize over 300mb until I use CWM to partition SD card. I have full use of SD card now.

Download apps directly to your SD card

I'm new here and I'm not sure if this has been asked or addressed before.
My situation is that I recently got an SD card to hopefully combat the constant insufficient storage issue. What I learnt is that it wasn't that easy. I tried many proposed solutions (link2sd, manually trying to move apps to the sd card from the application manager, using abd to try and change the install location and then finally rooting) but none proved to be the answer.
When I tried using abd, at first it would give me an error message but after going into Terminator emulator and changing it from there, it said that worked, even did pm get-install-location and it said that it was set to the external and even went as far as running cmd from my computer and this time it said it also worked. I downloaded some apps and once again they were downloading to the internal storage.
I would really appreciate if someone could help me with this or at least point me in the right direction.

New SD card works but some apps can't find it (default gallery/Aldiko).

tl;dr
The card is tested and good (results below), the card reader is good (tested by reinstalling 5.7.4).
So few other people are having this issue, what is going on with my phone?
--
I've read and read, but no matter what I try, I can't get my SD card to work.
Here's the details of how, and what, I installed on my Sprint S5.
I'm coming from Resurrection Remix 5.7.4 MM, (where the SD card worked fine, but did have a few issues with the camera (used open camera instead) and some post reboot oddness (shortcuts disappearing)).
I first formatted card using the windows software sdformatter to FAT32
copied files to SD card using a card reader plugged into PC.
Files copied
RR-N-v5.8.2-20170304-kltespr-Official.zip
open_gapps-arm-7.1-micro-20170327.zip
UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.79-20161211114519.zip
TWRP 3.X
wiped dalvik/cache/system/data
then factory reset
added files to zip queue, Rom, then Gapps, then SU
Flashed
Phone boots fine, initial set up completes.
Tried a reinstall of apps using Ti Pro, but it failed, so started again and used google apps restore during boot. Issues with many apps. So started again, with a "fresh start" option during set up.
I took a few pictures.
I can view them immediately after taking, by pressing the previously taken image image inside the camera app.
Open default Gallery and get the error "No storage. No external storage available."
I installed a+ gallery and it is able to open the images just fine.
Default Files app can browse the SD card.
Aldiko will not download books, as it thinks there is no SD card installed
I've tried (and checking each time)
formatting in card as internal, then back to portable in phone.
Clearing the data/cache for the apps giving errors.
factory resetting
Wiping and formatting the card (on PC to FAT32), and starting again (several times).
Started from scratch again, with a brand new Sandisk card
Tried ZepherOS Zephyr-N Version (Viserion-6.1) Android 7.0
Wiping cache/dalvik only and rebooting
Same "No storage..." error, every time.
I tried ZephrOS. Right after install there is no file manager, but if I click the default app "downloads", I can navigate to the camera folder, then to the image. When I click on it, it opens the image, but still shows the same error "no storage..." even though I'm looking at the image behind the error window. :/
I'm running H2testw, but don't expect an issue, as the same error was on the previous card and the brand new card.
Can I go from 7.0/7.1 to a stock ROM without issues, if so which one?
Update:
SD card test result
Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
Writing speed: 7.15 MByte/s
Reading speed: 15.7 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4
UPDATE #2:
I started fresh with a new install of RR 5.7.4 and the card does still have issues with some apps, but is working fine with others. Open camera works fine, and the gallery access the correct card in this ROM. Aldiko still fails as it's trying to download to /sdcard
Most apps are looking for /sdcard but I have /sdcard1
If it helps, it appears sdcard is symlinking to /storage/self/primary
Anyone able to help?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, settings>apps>settings>App permissions>Storage is turned on.
Aldiko, for example, is looking for /sdcard but it doesn't exist. I'm thinking a symlink might fix the issue? But am not familiar enough with Android under the hood, to know what other issues that might cause.

FAT32 this was recommend in most places I read. I thinks it's a paths issue. I'm not sure the format would make a difference to that, right?

A fresh install would resolve any path issues. The device can't read the card, which means that it's formatted incorrectly or is incompatible. How did you format it originally? On a computer? Go into the storage menu, and if it's detected, then try using the native Android option to reformat it. Back up your stuff first.
If that fails, try formatting it in recovery.

Thanks, I know the OP was long, but I hoped the details of what I'd already tried would be appreciated. I did several fresh installs trying to fix, and formatted every which way I could in phone and on a PC. Nothing has worked.
I've kind of given up on this and have decided to switch to Verizon. Sprint sucks so bad, after 10 years I've finally had enough, so I have to replace the phone anyway.
If you know of a decent phone to get, I'm looking for a recommendation in this thread, https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/switching-to-verizon-200-phone-t3588790
Thanks for your attention to my issue. Sorry it's left unresolved. I run my own business and just can't spend this much time fixing my phone.
