Sounds like something needs updating on your PC or there's some kind of issue with your computer.

Do research, don't be lazy

has nothing to do with being lazy i dont wanna mess up my phone would rather ask for advice then to screw it up

Screen shot of error?

got it to download just waiting on the autoroot thing to download its taking forever

the autoroot file doesnt even open nor can u extract files or anything from it

are you on a mac? sounds like it to me.

nope on windows 7 i downloaded the zip created a sep file on my desktop for it went to extract said it couldnt needed a compressed file so made on and still doesnt work

says access to the compressed zipped folder deniied

Try unrevoked again. Make sure you install the modified hboot drivers since you're on Win7. Uninstall HTC Sync if you have it installed... along with anything else that communicates/syncs with your phone. Turn on usb debugging (that's probably why it couldn't find your phone) and try running it again. Also make sure your phone is connected in "charge-only" mode, not as disk drive.

ok says successfull but dont notice any diff as far as the stock apps gone or anything?

You should still have all the same apps but a new one called superuser also.

Read, read, read. Then read some more. Seriously. You need to fully understand what you're doing before you do it.
If you want something iPhone-like, try MIUI with an iPhone theme. Once you've read everything you can find, if you still have questions then send me a pm and I'll help you out. Just do some research first, and go ahead and do a nandroid backup before making any changes to system apps or anything else.

Any way to get a 2.1 ROM without rooting?

I have a Mac, none of these .exe files will run. Is there a way I can just mount my Hero, download a zipfile, drop it in there and get a 2.1 ROM? I thought I could with Damageless?
um I have a MAC and you don't need any .exe files to root your phone. use the guide in the sticky at the top of the forum and your good to go.
Sent from my HERO200 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
No, you must gain root one way or another to get a recovery image on there to flash ROMs...
Here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581686
Thanks, but I cant be assed doing all that work. Isnt there something that auto roots for you with a download and a few clicks?
yeah, but its an .exe. honestly, if you cant be assed to take 5 minutes to root manually, youre in wrong forum.

I see. Once I root, I then have to flash a ROM too. This all takes 5 minutes? The instructions to flash dont look too detailed. Is there alot involved?
Rooting- quick. Flashing- pretty quick. First boot-dreadfully long.

but u could flash it quicker with the Godspeed recovery.
Not to be a ****, but.....wow, are you going to piss and moan in every forum online about this? Didn't you say you were done with the Hero and going back to the iphone or something not to long ago in phandroid........Just root and get it over with already.

Well if you don't want do all that work then I suggest you just wait for the official release.
The only auto rooter is for windows. Rooting and flashing ROMs can lead to problems. If you are unwilling to put some effort into it then you are going to end up bricking your phone or running into what we on the forum would consider a small problem. However, it will turn into a huge issue because you don't understand some basic functionality of the recovery shell and wouldn't know how to access ADB to enter a couple commands to help diagnose.
This is an issue about you coming back and asking 101 questions and have people hold your hand because you can't be bothered to learn a couple things about a new world you are trying to enter.
If you are unwilling to learn then please leave these forums because I can tell you are going to be nothing but trouble.
spend the time reading everything fully first, this will save you time and make you more comfortable.
BTW, you can root with the flashrec method if you'd like with any computer platform, but to do anything useful like remove bloatware, you're going to need the adb from the SDK at least. I would root through terminal if I were you, its not hard and many helpful people on here, including myself. I've rooted 2 phones on mac, and 3 on PC already. Just give me a pm, if you run into trouble somewhere.
Things not to forget
USB debugging needs to be on (settings--applications--development)
commands in terminal require ./ before the adb commands
Rooting is easier on a mac than pc... no drivers to install.

dont use flashrec jus do it through adb go to the stiki wiki and read how to root hero cdma for mac all you have to do is download the sdk it basically sets itsself up download asroot2 put it in the tools folder in your sdk and the recovery image of choice then simply copy and paste the commands from the guide its really that simple..
root with godspeed..........................woot woot
I would suggest rooting manually. You will learn some basic ADB commands.
maybe its just me but cant u use bootcamp and install xp or win7 and do it from there or is your Apple IIc just not up to the task..
mbell, didnt you get banned from android forums for spamming/flaming/trolling?
nothing personal but dont do that here or you''ll get banned even quicker.

restore from ROM manager bricked my phone

I did a search and couldn't find much help.
I recently dropped my phone and the screen got a slight crack, so the insurance company sent me a new one.
I figured I'd use ROM manager to backup my old phone, and restore it on my new phone.
New phone restores, reboots, and gets stuck at the black Vibrant screen.
I can get back into recovery mode fine, but nothing seems to work.
I let it sit at the Vibrant screen for about an hour before I try again.
Its attempt 3 when I decided to come on this site for some help.
Specs:
Stock
Rooted
Launcher pro
Nothing too much to be confusing and brick, so wtf?
Oh and I understand I could use odin to reflash my phone, please please please don't suggest odin, because I don't own a PC, I own a mac. Please don't tell me to go out and buy a PC or to download a program that costs $50 to use PC programs on a mac. I could have told myself that kind of information.
HELP, my brand new phone is destroyed wahhhh
From the sound of it you still have your old phone. If so, rather than restore using nandroid, try downloading a copy of titanium backup to backup/restore your apps. I have found that sms restore does a good job restoring texts. For me those two apps get the job done restoring my info. Also, if you haven't, sync your contacts to google and they will auto sync upon load. Of course this all assumes you still have your old phone in working order. ..
Also, there are stock roms flashable via clockwork that basically do the same as odin. Check the ' bible' sticky for links.
Hope this helps

The only way I can think of that a nandroid restore would soft brick you, is because you have restored a version of android with a different kernel.
If the original phone had the original firmware (JFD), and the replacement had the most recent (JI6), this is what would be expected to happen.
Since you seem unable and unwilling to use Odin, your going to have to tell us more details (i.e. which versions of the firmware as related above were actually in play) before we can begin to help. If you don't know, well....
You can also simply take it back to a local T-Mobile store and do another swap, or you can find a friend with a Windows PC and Odin (or Samsung's Mini KIES with JI6). These are your only real options...
both phones had JI6
Thank you for the quick responses.
I'm not unwilling to use odin, but unless anyone knows of a free software to use PC programs on a mac, I'm SOL.
so, you got the new phone, rooted, got rom manager and then got clockwork recovery right?
You did a nandroid backup right (on the new phone), before flashing anything right?
Why not just download Fusion and flash that to get the phone up and running?

Well hmm....so much for guessing on my part. Crossing different build kernels is one sure fire way to brick...
Well, there is a solution for Mac and Linux for reloading firmware on a Samsung phone from Download Mode, an open project called Heimdall. It does everything Odin does, but without a GUI, so it depends on how comfortable you are with commandline/shell.
I'll pass you the relevant links so you can see for yourself what's going on.
[PROGRAM] Heimdall - Cross-Platform Open-Source Flashing Software (1.0.0 Available)
Heimdall's Website, with downloads...
XDA Dev Thread with JI6 Odin .tar file....
Best of luck!

True that...Why didn't I think of that obvious ploy. If he can get into Recovery, and bounce over to clockwork...Well now's a good a time as any to try Bionix or Bionix Fusion...or a few other of the CW Recovery installable builds...Definitely easier than Heimdall or working out Odin on a mac....and definitely preferable to staring at a Vibrant logo...

If there was a step by step walkthrough, I have no problem trying this out.
But I downloaded it and have no idea what I'm doing. Therefore, still SOL
^ are you? You didn't answer my questions.
I'm gonna guess and say you also dl'd the oclf from the market to root too... so now you can't get back into CwR... right?
If you can get adb to recognize your phone then your not SOL. Im not sure what the exact command lines would be but you could delete the update.zip and replace it with another ROM. GL
I just tried using Odin on my roommates PC. An error happened and now the phone is showing a picture of a phone, a couple dots, an exclamation mark, a couple dots, and a computer.
Nothing I can do is taking it out of this screen. Unplugged from computer, took out battery, took out sd card, put it back in... nothing
Am I bricked for good now?
This is a terrible day.
edit: i managed to be able to get the phone into download mode.
No you are not completely bricked! Honestly that is almost impossible on this phone. The only way you'll lose this phone is if YOU give up.
Just keep trying and take a few deep breathes. Take a break actually. Just redo the process from step one.
Edit: you're half way there. Just flash Eugene's froyo that doesn't brixk, reboot, flash JFD or JI6, reboot... then you'll be right back to out of the box status.

Google VISIONary (r14) place it on your device, install it then run it. Temproot is for temporary rooting your device, its gone after a reboot, permaroot is for good, unless you use the unroot option.
Its safe, fast and easy. I use temproot option so I can use some root only apps. This is the first device I have felt no need to add a custom rom to or anything so VISIONary was the choice for me. If you want the long harder way directions can be provided. I do recommand you learn the long hard way at some point, its good to know your way around just in case.

first of all rooting is not for everyone. I can name a few people in a few forums that do not run a rooted phone for one reason or another. Rooting your phone gives you possibilities that are not even considered when you are in a stock form. But on the other hand you can seriously damage your phone, with the possibility of it ending up a 500.00 paper weight.
The safest and easiest thing to do is download VISIONary.apk and just use temp root. That will give you the ability to do everything you need to do in a root status w/o risking FUBARing anything. You can wi-fi tether, run Titanium Backup and stuff like that.
If you are wanting to go full blown and root it w/ s=off and do the
you can do it the real way and follow Cyanogen's method
Or you can do via the TheUnlockr for a simpler way.
If I temp-root it, would I have to temp-root it every time I want to run the wifi-tether program? Or just on installation?

how the eff is stuff getting deleted from the SDcard. the recovery image doesn't natively delete anything from the SDcard.

Their has to be something wrong with (a) the recovery image or (b) the g/apps.
Are you sure you are downloading the correct g/apps for our phone running CM7. They have their own g/apps....If you are 100% sure it's for our phone then i'd suggest .....
... is attempting to manually flash the recovery image to make sure you do not get a blip in the system. Personally, i do not trust flashing recovery images with Clockwork ROM manager. I've seen a-lot of errors come out of it. This might be one of them.
Have you tryed the 8gig sdcard to install the g-apps? the 32gig may be bad
I just removed the sd card and put it on my laptop and copied a folder with music... after taht turned on the phone and it is gone! strange!
Gonna test the 8gigs..
Put the 8 gigs, and it installed... Hmmm...
NOw, after it finishes the setup of the apps I will format the 32 and test it...

Make sure you've got the Samsung USB Drivers installed
Make sure you check allow usb dev in settings

My PC is windows 7 64bit and kies works fine + windows 7 is brilliant for drivers. Try flashing using Odin with stock 2.2 can be found easily with detailed instructions, just Google it. Then try rooting from there. Wouldn't worry about warranty, your making your phone work better. Have fun.

try reinstalling kies then running the link I sent you, it should work fine. I'm running 64bit windows and everythings works great for me.

Have fun.

Here's the question I have. If I completely uninstall everything, drivers, keis, etc. and then re-install Keis - I get thet MTP failed drivers error with windows.
So then I was told to install the Windows Samsung x64 bit drivers (which I do) -- but this doesn't work either.
Then I try to "reinstall drivers" from Keis - but this does nothing either.
Any and all combinations of the above has been tested and failed -- it just sits there "trying to connect" to device - but nothing ever happens, ever.
Keis is by far the stupidest program I've ever come across - how can it possibly not work right out of the box ? I have seem hundreds of people in my case - there is no excuse for such ****ty software.
Heres the thing - I want to flash, but I want to back up all my apps and stuff first, which I can't do without ROOT
Don't get me wrong, I'm going to flash away, but not until I back up all my apps - Titanium requires ROOT which is why I am here... i need to figure out a way to root so I can back up my stuff (i have like 160 apps I don't want to re-download)
Any ideas on how to back up apps WITHOUT needing to root ?

If you flash clockwork mod recovery or a kernel that incorporates it then you can backup and restore your apps in /data from there
Hope this helps!

Ok well forget using keis and just try flashing with Odin. Make sure keis isn't open when you do this though. You will have to put the phone in to download mode to flash it with Odin. Or if you don't want to mess about with Odin make sure USB debugging is off and try using the other USB setting like mass storage then it wont go through keis when you connect it. Hope this helps

[ROOT] HTC EVO 4G 2.3 Gingerbread root tutorial

Alright guys, this post is just for reference and ease. I've been using xda ever since I got my old HTC Hero a year and a half ago. Now I have the EVO and xda has been nothing but helpful to me. I've decided to make this post to try to help anyone that might not know much about android so I will make this a simple, easy to understand post tutorial.
HTC EVO 4G 2.3 Gingerbread root tutorial:
(Step 1) Power down your phone and take the battery out. Printed on the phone under the battery is a serial number. It is on the bottom line and usually starts with the letters: HT then a series of numbers and letters. Write this code down for you will need it later.
(Step 2) Download superuser from this link: http://www.mediafire.com/?q3ujsx1m4uq1662.
(Step 3) Download the HTC drivers from this link: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...=HTC Drivers&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13139469417033
(Step 4) Plug your phone to your computer and put the phone in disk drive mode. Now put the superuser .zip on the sdcard and change the mode to charge only.
(Step 5) Put the phone in usb debugging mode. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>development>usb debugging.
Also, enable fastboot. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>fastboot.
(Step 6) Got to: http://revolutionary.io/ Go down to the downloads section and select either windows or linux. (depending on your machine) Allow the file to download and proceed to the beta key generation.
(Step 7) Select your operating system (windows or linux) and your device and hboot version.
If you are unsure of your hboot version you can check by powering down your phone and holding volume down and the power button (make sure fastboot is turned off before doing this. just make sure to enable it again once you have checked and have the phone powered back up.)
Now enter your serial key (the code you got from under the battery.) select generate key and it will give you a beta key.
Make sure to keep the window open.
(Step 8) Extract the revolutionary.zip and run revolutionary. It should recognize your device and then ask for the beta key. Enter the beta key it gave you, remember it is case sensitive.
(Step 9) Revolutionary will now work its magic. Let it do its thing and DO NOT interrupt it. It may seem like it is frozen but it sometimes just takes a few minutes.
(Step10) After it gets done with all of its operations, revolutionary will ask if you want it to connect to the internet and download the recovery. type the letter "y" and hit enter. It will do it and then reboot.
(Step11) Now you need to flash the superuser .zip. Disable fastboot and and usb debugging and power down the device. Hold volume down and power at the same time until you get the hboot menu. It may check for an image and shouldn't find one. Just let it do its thing. Volume down and select recovery. It will reboot into recover. Now just volume down to install .zip then select choose .zip from sdcard and choose the su 2.3.6.3 efgh signed.zip and select yes. It will flash it. When it is done just reboot.
Congratulations. You are now rooted with superuser and s-off and have full root access.
Thank you, xda. I am grateful for this forum of great and helpful people, without you guys my android life would would be simply mediocre.
Edit: If you need to learn how to flash roms, here is my guide!!: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1230610
Nicely done but may I suggest 1 thing to some people that I have noticed in going thru the root thread in development. I think you should also download a rooted version of the rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153 and flash this right away or in lieu of flashing the root files. I have seen some people have issues running certain things with the root zip file provided.
Also I think the first thing that should be done prior to rebooting is Nandroid(ing) your present rom for safe keeping.
Yeah that makes sense. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with my way after doing it three different times with three different evos, but, nevertheless, I appreciate your input and if you have seen this problem then thank you for bringing it to the attention of the viewers of this thread.
This is by far the easiest Root I've done to date (granted I've only rooted by Hero and my Evo), but still. Gotta love simplicity.
Thank you for posting this! Now I have a few questions I am hoping someone could answer.
The first: Will this process wipe my phone?
And the second: Our home computer is a Mac. Since this isn't available for Mac computers at the moment, I have an older laptop running windows vista that I am trying it on. I tried to install the HTC drivers but it keeps popping up with a window asking if I want to repair it or remove it. What is this error? There isn't an option to just install it. What should I do to make it work?
Thank you for any help anyone can offer.

The file is a simple exe file and should only install not sure whats that about and also it will not wipe out anything. But you do need to do a backup of your apps. My suggestion would be Titanium Backup or MyBackup
HOnestly people this root is incredibly easy to sit here and double triple guess your self with this particular procedure is unnecessary. Just follow direction to the letter at the original development thread or here and it will be done if 3 minutes. No risk at all IMO.... If you are still worried I would be happy to help out just PM me

No, the rooting process does not get rid of any user information. It simply unlocks the bootloader for your phone. As for the drivers, what Windows OS are you using? I found it far easier to install the drivers on Windows 7 than XP.

In reality after you get s-off on your bootloader you can flash another rom. You only flash the su zip if you want to have your present rom rooted.

Nope. No data loss will occur. The drivers sometimes are interfered with by other programs so what I suggest is disabling your antivirus and uninstall anything you have on your computer that has to do with htc. Just keep the drivers and get rid of stuff like htc sync and pdanet.

Ok thanks. I just wanted to be sure. The computer is Windows Vista. Will the drivers still work on it?

Whoops! I got the HTC stuff to install and now it is in the process of rooting. I figured out right after I edited this post. Thank you for all the help!

This is a bit redundant. I really don't understand what you mean but if you just follow the directions completely and entirely then it will work perfectly. Just plug it in when the directions call for it.

Stop over thinking it.... Its ok its really as simple as it sounds... Relax follow each step and you will be fine... Your questions sound like your worried and if you are the steps after you root will drive you crazy. Especially changing kernels, flashing radios or roms....
