I just got my 8525 in the mail yesterday and upgraded the boot loader, radio, and WM6. I had a little trouble but in the end, all that I can't get working right is the internet for Cingular. I really appreciate all the hard work everyone puts into this. Here is my thank you, this is my first app so go easy on me.

nombCrypt
nombCrypt is an encryption program I originally made for the desktop but then decide to port it over. It uses a password you provide and encrypts either a block of text or files using 256bit Rijndael (AES). This level of encryption was given the ok to encrypt Top Secret documents. It can of course decrypt as well. This is for Windows Mobile 6. Please enjoy and every developer of course likes to get back feedback.

Hey! I wanted to do the same thing too! Just that I use my own XOR method (One Time Pad-like) instead. Of all the thing, it works alright, except that I can't get it to do a Copy-Paste. (see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321014)
Also, from what it seems, I would presume that (since you uses AES), the end result would be in 'relatively' binary format (right?), which may not be very program friendly.
I was going to do about the same thing, except that I'll have my end result Base64 encoded, such that I can have them pasted to Notes and have it sycned to outlook. And I have my PC based software to do the job there (if required).
Previously, I used a software called Ccrryyppttoo, which did quite alright, but it seems that my PC is doing some coding, when synced, that makes it goes funny (i.e. cannot be decrypted anymore).
I'll PM you a demo of what I did (in Java web), of which I intended to do it in PPC
With Rijnael the resulting encrypted string/file gets encoded into base64 as well because if it didn't, all the characters wouldn't be represented. You can paste this into notes just fine.
Mine is programmed in c# so there is a clipboard function which works relatively well. If you'd like to help with this your more than welcome to. Or if you want to join your project with mine that would be cool too. I plan to support all major and a lot of minor encryption algorithms that I can find. Plus people were complaining about how the encrypted backup on the ppc should use the device id to encrypt instead of the randomly generated key so I plan to implement that as well.

Anyway, there is a suggestion, I'm not sure if you have the library for it. After my symmetric cipher program, I'm in thinking about a asymmetric-public-private key cipher, which people can exchange short messages in secret (e.g. via email, IM, SMS) without the need to exchange the key/password. It is relatively done now, I'll show you the web base version once it is done. It runs on the Java security class, which I'm not sure if C# has those library or not.
The idea is, Alice go to my page, generate a pair of keys. Alice then send Bob her pub key. Bob use pub key, go to my page, encrypt the message. Send it to Alice. Alice decrypt message at my page. No software to install, no secret key exchanged.
Yup c# has the ability to do that built into its cryptography namespace.
That is a cool idea, but instead of having Alice send the key to him. You should just make a db to keep track of the keys and then have him answer a question about Alice or something like that to use the pub key. that way thats even one less step they have to worry about. Or have Alice put in his email address and have your site auto email him the pub key. That would be good too.
But sweet idea, maybe I'll make my program talk to your site.

Ya I'm at work and was hungry so I wasn't thinking strait. I don't like that idea either. ^^
I think my next step in mine is to build the background worker class to update the progress bar when you encrypt/decrypt a file.
If you just point your phone to the cab above it will install it for you. You don't need a comp unless u don't have a dataplan.

I dont have data in my plan.. although O2 gives me 1MB+ a month free.. I'm not using it.
Anyway, I've tested your software, a few comments.
Slightly major problems:
[1] It is not wise to do a 'All folders' and 'All Files' upon browsing (for file to be de/encrypt). People (e.g. me) has gazillion files around and it may take ages to load the list.
[2] You may want to pop up a Window, asking the user to confirm his/her password upon encryption (one of the thing I intended to add on mine )
[3] I'm not able to paste any data onto the 'start text' area. E.g., I have encrypted my stuff, saved it into Notes. Later, I wanted to get it back, I copy the encrypted code from my Notes, and no way of pasting it into the 'Start text'
[4] You already knew this, but, good to have some kind of progress bar to indicate the progress
[5] Hmmm.. on the browsing, there doesn't seems to have a way to find files on my Storage Card's root directory
[6] For security reason, probably it is good for you to add a 'Clear Clipboard' button?
Minor:
[1] I find it annoying that once I had the software installed, it is on my Start menu
[2] You could use a better icon, I just see a black square on my not so bright screen. I can help you on this.
[3] Add an "Exit" on the menus below?
Other possible suggestions:
[1] Have a time out on your software, such that, e.g. if there is no activity on software after a certain amount of time, it will do one/some/all of these (a) close itself (b) clear the password, input, output (c) clear the clipboard
Good suggestions, I'll have those done by tomorrow. I can't play with the storage card aspect yet because I don't have one. :'( Soon though I'm hoping to get a 4gb. And ya, i can't make icons worth any.
Oh, to past it back I always did ctrl+v from the keyboard. But I'll throw a button up there to do that. And I'll make sure to take it off of the start menu.

Did you wrote any backup software before for the PPC? I'm not really sure, but it seems that backup-ing can have a lot of issues. You have the "Copy everything" backup, the PIM only backup, etc. Some backups are ROM-flashing/upgrading friendly, some are not. You can have a backup software all standalone by itself. I would recommend you to have the backup software seperated and have encryption onto it as a plugin. Take a look at PIM-backup, it is very popular here.

Answer: I pondered over this for a little while and I can't think of a reason this would be necessary. However, I've only had my phone for two days. Can you find where you saw that so I can read it as well and maybe gather a little bit on information so I can do some research on the topic? If thats what needs to be done then thats what I'll do but I can't see why. Let me know!

I added the timeout feature and thought I would make a comment on it.
It is a two minute timeout. Whenever you fucos on a textbox the timer is stopped and when the textbox looses focus, the timer is on. The downside to this is if you were in the middle of typing and set your device down, it wont timeout. I could make it so when you start typing into the textbox it restarts the two minutes and you have two minutes to complete your message but I didn't know if that was a good idea or not.
Also, when you copy, and go to another program to paste it in, you have two minutes before the clipboard is cleared and the program shutdown.
When the encryption program is encrypting something, the timeout is not running. It starts afterwards.
I can tweak this as much as you guys would like, just let me know.

- The "Clear" button doesn't seems to be working. It is suppose to clear the clipboard only? Should you clear off everything as well?

Anyway, slightly related to the suggestion above, I've just revisited the design I made on my copy-paste-failed PPC attempt, I have this idea which I thought you might want to use it. For my design, I do not have "Start Text" and "End Text", I only have ONE TextField "Message" (and another for the password). The user enter the encrypted/plain text on this "Message". Click on the button "Encrypt" or "Decrypt", the result will then overwrite whatever that is in "Message" TextField.
Example:
(1) "Message"=<plain text>. User key in password, click "Encrypt", "Message"=<encrypted text>.
(2) "Message"=<encrypted text>. User key in password, click "Dencrypt", "Message"=<plain text>.
In such cases, you only need a pair of copy-paste to perform copy-paste on both (in a way) encrypted and plain text.

As for the time out issue, I thought the typing-sensitive time out would be a better choice. The moment that you are worried about your data being seen is when you are away from your phone. You can have focus on your TextField but you can be million miles away from your phone. But, you ought to be around to be typing stuff, right?
BTW, I'm also wondering on the working of this time out feature. I thought there ought to be a 'clock' running and when time's up, it will clear the stuff needed to be cleared, right? So, if I were to forget to switch off the application, the timer will not be another running software that drain my battery, right?

The "clear" button is in the clipboard row, i think i tagged it on the left, and only clears the clipboard. If you go to menu->reset it will clear everything like your looking for.

The "Copy" button copies the end text to the clipboard. Not the start text.

I originally had it setup this way, however there was a time when I had wrote a huge paragraph in it and encrypted it, and then found out I had forgot a line. I switched it so this wont happen.

The timeout I have running in it now, (new version that isn't up yet), is completely off of the user's actions. Whenever you do anything in the program the timer resets. Except for encrypting/decrypting. The timer is off for those functions incase you encrypt a file that takes longer.

The timeout feature does not clear everything in the program. I have it so it actually completely closes the program. So if you forget to close it and walk away, the program will end so it doesn't drain your battery.

I got the progressbar working for encryption, now for decryption.
Hi I didn't know where I could get help on this topic but seeing as some of the guys in here have made such excellent programs I thought you might be familar with c# on windows mobile.
here is my problem.
I have a task I need to do every x seconds I want to be able to start and stop this repeating task immediately.
I have attempted to solve this by creating a class which holds the taks I want to do, in this class I have put a windows.forms.timer with the task as its timer.tick event. this task has a method called start() which sets the timer going.
to start the process in my main thread i create a new thread which creates an instance of my class(mentioned above) and calls its start method.
The problem is the tick event never seems to fire is this because its in a seperate thread to the one which has focus, is it because it doesnt have an asociated form?
is there a better way to do this?
I want an object I can create which I can call methods to start and stop a repeating task.

Instead of windows.forms.timer try system.threading.timer!

Why have you put this in a thread, so you can abort it midway through processing its tick event?
Is there a better way you could do this than adding the complexity of threads? Perhaps add a bool to you class and your tick event can check at safe points if it is false (and exit)?
My initial thought to the problem as you have outlined it is that your thread is finished after completing its Start() method, so the tick event never gets called (as the timer no longer exists). You would need to keep the thread alive (without interfereing with your timer).
Windows.Forms.Timer is a bad choice for this as it uses the calling thread - so if you add a System.Threading.Thread.Sleep() (or some other blocking action) to keep your thread alive, your timer wont work. System.Threading.Timer is a better choice as it uses its own thread.
Hi thanks so much for the info I will have a look at threading timers.
I have put it in its own thread so I can abort it early because each "tick" could be between 5-15 mins and the task takes between 1 second and 5 mins so I wanted to be able to make sure the task is started at regular intervals and have the ability to stop the process immediately.
I was just thinking that neither timers or using a bool will allow me to stop the process immediately, is it safe to use thread.abort? i.e. if part of the task is to update a field could it be stopped half way through and corrupt the data?
if it is unsafe is there a safe thread abort i.e. abort as soon as the thread has finished updating any fields or database records(this thread wont update database but its good to know)
also to the point you raised about the thread finishing when my start() method finishes I kept that going using a while loop and a bool i.e.

Threads can be somewhat unpredictable. Thread.abort calls an exception, so as far as i know if you have something like
var1 = "blah";
that would finish - var1 would not be corrupt. But, if you were doing something more complicated such as your database example you cant be sure when it will cut you off. Of course, you can catch the ThreadAbortException, and do some checking if required.
As for your while loop, that almost certainly blocked the thread and is why your timer did not work. Windows forms timers are based around events and will not typically run while one of your methods is still working, unless it yields somehow. Infact, on a single cpu device like your phone that loop would probably block a System.Threading.Timer because while(true); results in 100% cpu usage.
This is a quick example of how I would impliment your timer requirement - mostly stolen from the msdn page on System.Threading.Timer.

ThreadMethod can just be directly called from your thread.
timer.Change starts the timer off. The Infinite means it is not a repeating timer.
resetEvent.WaitOne() simply waits for the event to be triggered. The nice thing about doing it that way is your processing is done by the calling method, and you can be sure at what point in your process. (Well, as much as you can with it all running inside a larger thread.)

Infact, that timer.Dispose() is pointless as it will never get called. Probably a good idea to call it if you catch the threadabortexception though.
Also, I think var1 (first example) would simply not change, but im not sure. I dont think it would get corruped either way.
Thanks so much for this information it looks excellent. So if I want to tidy up some stuff on exit I see on msdn it says the finally block will exitcuted before exit or I could catch the abortexception as you suggest, where would I put this code would it be inside the threadMethod? or does it go somewhere else?
also imagine this example I am updating a record in my database, I throw the abort exception and it stops the process midway, is there a way in code to say ignor this exception and continue? i.e. when updating database i could set a bool and then check this bool in the finally or catch block and if its true say ignor this and continue and then outside my thread I could do a check on the thread to see if its still running if it is then i wait for x amount of time and try the abort again?
what would be a good way to notify the calling thread that the thread with the timer is still running as the isAlive property is not included as part of the compact framework, I suppose I could have a bool in the calling thread which the timer thread could change in the finally catch block when the abort exception is passed, but this would mean passing the calling thread to the called thread is there any problems doing this?

Im afraid we have hit the limit of my knowledge on threads and exceptions.
My thought was you could wrap the database parts in a try-catch, at least allowing you to handle the abort gracefully. As far as I know you can not continue the thread at the point it stopped - you can merely ignore it and carry on after the catch. Of course, exceptions are not meant to be used on a trial basis, they are more worst case.
Events may suit you a bit better, as they do not halt the flow. That way your thread could keep track anytime it is doing something important like database access - and the event would only close if safe.
You should be able to have your thread access a bool in the parent object, aslong as you are careful with synchronization. Making sure all parts that read/write to it use lock should be sufficient.

btw I used the code you provided and tweaked it a bit to get my first problem working, i put the contence of the threadmethod inside a try block catch the abort exception and then call timer.dispose(), seems to work quite nicely so far, although I dont think i have managed to abort half way through a process, it always seems to be before or after but seeing as I dont use any of the variables after its stopped I assume all would be safe anyway.
to make the updating database part safer I was thinking that I would also put that in another thread and if its running when I send the abort exception I would wait until it is free and then stop the timer, what do you think? does sending an exception to a thread halt all its created threads as well? because if so my plan wont work.
btw im alomst 100% confident that actually calling abort using my app while it is updating is impossible but I dont want there to be a bug present I know about.

I'm a new android developer working on an extremely simple app and I just need a quick pointer! My app, once started, needs to call a certain phone number. This part was simple and works fine. However, I need that call to end after a specific amount of time (10 seconds is the number I'd like).
At this point I'm unsure how to proceed. I've tried spawning a thread that simply waits for 10 seconds, and then tries to call finishActivity() on the activity that I originally started. However, I'm assuming that one thread can't control another threads activities, so this clearly doesn't work. I've also tried a few other methods and none of them seem to work, or they simply crash my app.
If someone can even give me just a high level overview of what I need to do that would be great! My next thought is to spawn a timer thread and use RPC to call a function that will activate finishActivity() in the thread that is running the activity.
Any information you guys can provide me with will be fantastic!
The API won't let you, however, you could try to switch ON airplane mode and the switch it OFF, the inconvenience of this is that all your active connections will be droped (3G, GRPS, Bluetooth, WiFi)
Are you sure its not possible? Using various callbacks I've sent finishActivity() to the action with success. The problem is that there are no callbacks that occur around the time that I want the call to end.
Since it does work with callbacks, I was tempted to have finishActivity() be called when the app is backgrounded. That way after 10 seconds I can just hit the home key and it will close the app down entirely? Not exactly what I want, but could work for now.
Due to the fact that it can be finished during a call back I think it must be possible, I'm just not sure how to go about achieving it. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have a user of my app who is having a problem running it. My code launches another activity in the same app, and he is saying it is stopping before it should & returning to the previous activity, and he doesn't see any Force Close warnings.
I have run my code in the emulator & on my phone, I can't reproduce the error. We both run Android 2.2 on our phones, his is an HTC EVO & mine is a HTC Wildfire, as far as I can tell his specs are better than mine so shouldn't cause an issue - I deliberately chose a low spec for for my dev work so the code ought to run on anything.
As a bit of an Andoid dev noob (but been coding for years), is there any easy way I can make a special build of the app to send to him that would log any errors that happen ? I'd like to get a stack dump as well if possible, as I'm not sure exactly what routine in the activity its crashing out in. The activity that crashes is Gallery with 9 images in it, he can't flick through them or select one. I'm stumped as to whats causing it, any assistance would be gratefully received.

Why not point to your app and let others here try it on their phones? It could simply be other apps installed on his phone interfering with your app.
Long time programmer here too and when I get to where you're at (and I"m sure you've put some hours into this LOL), I go back to STEP 1.
I comment-out any and all code but the bare minimum; break it down to the Intent, startActivity and maybe a Toast message in the second activity. Even parse down your XML files to bare minimum.
See if that works. Then, ADD BACK ONE LINE OF CODE AT A TIME Run program and make sure it works. Yeah, it's painful, but in my 20 years of coding, I've learned to put my pride aside and to not "pretend" all the code I've written is correct.
Sometimes on bigger projects, I"ll change or add a couple of lines of code, run a back up and test. Rinse and repeat LOL. That way, I know I"m only a couple of lines of code from what "used" to work.

Rootstonian - agreed thats the approach I'd normally take if I was having problems on my dev phone or the emulator. The problem is that its OK on my HTC Wildfire/Android2.2 but on this guys HTC EVO/Android2.2 its having problems. I dont really want to keep sending him .apks with 1 or 2 lines extra enabled just to see if that fixes his specific issue. I was hoping there was something I could code to catch whatever crashes the activity & log it somewhere for me to analyse. When I do PC dev work, I have a global exception handler that catches anything I dont explicitly handle, and dumps the full call stack into a Log File I can read later.
I think I'll just have to take the existing app & put loads of debug code into it to save messages into a log file & see what bits of code are being called & what isn't & then get him to email me the results.

I'm working on an app that has my partner and I debating on pretty much a daily basis. I'll try to explain best as possible without too much detail.
The app takes a pre-loaded database (a "template") from assets folder and loads into the app. Works fine. Thing is, there will be more templates, probably up to 20 for which we want to charge (we're talking small amounts here).
So, here is the debate we're having:
1. Create 20 apps with each having the one template. Easy as hell for me but goes against my programming standards as to why have 20 apps when ONE does the work? NOTE: Does not need any permissions
2. Create one app, ask user for template on startup, download from cloud. A little tougher, but not much. Problem here is that what if they want 2 templates? Or 5? We want to charge for each template. I could do "AppName +2" or "AppName +5"
versions and charge accordingly. NOTE: Max templates a user would have is probably 5.
3. In-app purchasing...I've read about this. Not so easy. You either hide content (and over bloat your app or code a mechanism that allows Joe to have in-app purchase app, but not Julie). Google makes clear note of this in their docs. NOTE: my bloat would be about a 7,000 row database on user's phone.
So, just looking for some other opinions...all comments welcome!

From what I can understand, I think # 1 is the most tried and true method, as most launchers with themes work this way. The upside for you as far as making money is concerned is that there are people who want all their options, whether or not they will ever use them... I have been guilty of it myself with lp+ themes. I've paid for ones I'll never use, because it's there and most apps tend to be in the "impulse buy" price range.
I agree, #1 is your best option, it may require a lot more work as far as deploying goes, but it is the most reliable method.

A little more information...the templates (e.g. database) will probably never change from initial download, so that update is a moot point.
One thing I didn't think about is creating and SAVING 20 keys!!! Yikes. I've lost those before...very bad situation when that happens. Not to mention 20 distinct package names.

You can sign all packages with the same key.
As of package names, all you need is to change the application package not the code packages. The ADT has a tool for renaming application packages.

Here is my suggestion, although I never tried it:
Create 20 apps for templates with no logic at all.
For each one of these apps:
(1) Put a single template file in the res/raw folder
(2) Create an Activity that doesn't do anything at all (call finish on onCreate).
(3) Set intent-filter for your null activity with android.intent.action.MAIN and your own custom category.
Create 1 main application with all application logic and code but with no templates at all (or just one default template).
(1) Search for installed templates using PackageManager.queryIntentActivities with an Intent that match Intent.ACTION_MAIN and your custom category.
(2) Read templates using Context.createPackageContext, getResources of the created context, getIdentifier to find the id of the template file and openRawResource to actually open it as an InputStream.
There are other methods to share resources, take look at android:sharedUserId.
Interesting concept, but if I read it right, I sill need 20 "dummy" apps to go with the main "driver".
I've got some time to mess with this because I have to implement drag and drop on some ListViews. I might just end-up coding the in-app purchase stuff.
