Do I still need to use USB debugging in GB? - Desire HD General

Now that I got the new OTA from HTC, do I still need to keep USB debugging on?

Well, thats up to you.
USB Debugging is used for development purposes done by programs such as HTC Sync, adb, etc...
they use it to modify, install or delete programs, copy data, read log files, etc....
I personally keep it on so that i when i use one of these programs, i dont have to go back and turn it on. But you can turn it off if you want.

Thanks for your reply, but I should have been more specific in my question. Back in FroYo it was advisable to leave USB debugging always on as it solved the problem of the UI being slow and jittery at times. I was wondering if this still applies in GB. For what its worth I have mine switched off and haven't noticed any problems yet (although I've only had GB for 12 hrs).

I've not read anything on needing it on in GB. I guess the answer would be to test it yourself and see. Alternatively just leave it off and if you have any speed issues with the phone, turn it back on and see if that helps at all.

No you do not need to use it.

Only when you want to flash the radio or anything else via cmd. Otherwise it shouldn't be needed.

Thanks for all the replies. I can now also confirm that keeping USB debugging off does not cause any sluggishness.

[Q] New to Root

So, I used to run WinMo way back when, and I'm familiar with flashing, HardSPL, blah blah blah, whatevs. I haven't done the rooting process yet on my phone because I'm finding it hard to find a few key things that I need.
-What is the effect on my phone when I root, in regards to data? Do I need to backup? If so, can I backup on my SD card or is everything wiped? What program could I use to backup?
-Are there any crazy little tweaks or tips that anyone has to help guard against a brick?
-I've read the pros and cons list, but can I get more details from someone? Can this help with battery life, allow me to flash my radio, increase general connectivity, etc.
All help would be greatly appreciated, and I'll plan on doing a donation today. I've just been out of the loop (running WinMo 6.5 style out of the loop:/) so some advice to a rook would be great. My goal is to get out of school and come home and root and fiddle with things with little to no problems. Thanks a ton everyone.
Dig Life!

The process of actually rooting doesn't mess with any of your stuff.
I use Titanium Backup to restore apps after flashing roms.
In general, most of this stuff COULD help your battery life, here there are Devs that will help - with sprint you get their tech support.
Well, I DL'ed TB and it says that I have to root first? Am I missing something here? Is it ok to root or will it delete all of my apps and what not? I mean, if it does, it isn't really that big of a deal, considering I can just download them again, I'm just looking for input.

I'm pretty new, too, but I think I can answer your questions. Rooting (at least with the One Click Method I used on my Epic) doesn't destroy any data/apps on your phone. It simply gives your user root access to the underlying OS. Once that is achieved, you can modify things and tweak things. Titanium Backup will let you backup all system files and data, but only AFTER rooting.
This is not a ROM flash or anything like that from the WinMo days. I haven't gotten that far on Android, so I'm not sure what the flashing options are yet, but rooting is harmless on its own. It will let you royally screw things up though, so once it is done, be careful what you do.
Well, I tried to do a few things like listed in the One-Click root thread, but I guess I'm just not getting it. Now that I know the effects of the root, I'd like to be able to actually do it, but I don't have enough details. I haven't ever rooted before, and I'm finding it confusing. What was listed in the one-click thread wasn't specific enough for me, I don't know if I need to run from SD card, what the ADB thing is, nothing. I was a WinMo master and I'm finally coming to Android which is literally worlds away from my comfortable norm.
what os are you running? the one click comes with everything you need. theres an osx version the windows version that noobnl updates and the linux version i maintain
I'm on Windows 7 64 bit. But I still can't get any of the one click stuff to work, I don't really know what exactly to do

I wouldn't exactly call root harmless..in itself it is ok..but if you give root access to a program that program has FULL access to your system..aka anything inputed on your phone or stored on your phone can be accessed by the program with root access. Though generally its not a problem..just careful which programs you allow to use root access.
Also, at what point are you getting stuck? did you install the drivers? are you getting any sort of errors or etc?
There is also some good reading over at SDX Developers.
I have hacked and rooted before, WinMo, Palm, HTC Hero, but this one was tough. It basically took me two days off and on, but it worked - finally.
Downloading drivers is a b--h, they are finicky and I needed all of them, kept
hanging on 2. They are slow, and kept looking for sources.
Search here, there is good info, then look there (above) I used OneClickExploit 2.2.4 which finally worked. It had some of the same files
in other methods, but this one worked.
I'm not changing roms, did on Hero to 2.2 because they weren't getting upgrade but I'm just going to hang and wait for Froyo.
Good luck

Download and unzip the one-click archive in to a folder. Double-click the run.bat. I had some problems where it would start and then hang. I often had to kill it and rerun the batch file. Sometimes I had to end task on the adb.exe process. Eventually after rebooting the phone, etc, I was able to get it to work. Not sure what the exact problem was. I think part of it was connectivity to the phone via usb. Connect through a port on your computer, not a hub.
Also, the batch file is just a bunch of commands. You can open a command line in the folder where the batch file is and run each line in the batch file individually from the command line. That will give you some idea of what is happening and where it might be failing.
Like I said, I had to stop and restart a bunch of time before it finally got through to the end of the batch file correctly. When it did, it was fast. Not sure what was happening.

When I try to install the drivers I get this message:
"The MSS InstallWizard was not Completed for SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones V1.3.450.0
The MSS InstallWizard was not successfully installed SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones V1.3.450.0. Click Finish to exit the wizard.
And I'm basically stuck there. I've searched around and can't find any drivers that will work. Like I said, I'm on 64-bit Windows 7 with a clean OS and no previous negative install history. Not sure what the issue could be?
Found the drivers and everything that I needed and I'm rooted, but now I have one more question. I don't plan on flashing any roms, I'm alright with the stock rom, at least for now. I wanted to know what rooting will do in regards to over the air updates on my phone. Will I be able to OTA to FroYo when released? Any info would be great guys, thanks.
where did you find the drivers? I am having the exact same problem that you had where the installwizard cannot download finish installing the drivers for whatever reason

Problems With Webtop Mod

Well... I went through old forums on here and found out about the command to run in a emulator on the atrix to manually enable Webtop, and thats the closest I've got to getting webtop over HDMI. I don't want to get Gingerblur, on my phone. I want to keep stock, and get the mod.. I have tried everything to my knowledge from the forum from Fenny to do it and I have had no luck at all. If there is any simpler way to enable the hack, I would love to know about it. The install.bat file won't even work thanks to that annoying ADB stuff. Anyone that's willing to help, would be highly appreciated.

just go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980193 and follow instructions on install option 1. when it says plug phone in adb mode u just go to settings, application, development and make sure u have usb debugging enabled then plug phone in and run install bat file.

Hi there. This is my first reply to a problem. I think i have it figured out.
Check this:
Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development:
On this screen make sure USB debugging is unchecked.
When you plug the phone into your computer, then a dialog should pop up on your phone asking you to enable USB storage mode. Tap "Turn on USB storage".
It may ask you to confirm. Tap "OK".
Good luck. I hope that helps you.

It's very much difficult than that. Well the only way to restore your usb problem is going back to stock and after that you only can install a 2.2 custom rom, after you switch to 2.3 your problem will appear again! If you go to "device manager" on windows when U use 2.2, U see that the phone is corrected installed, but when u connect with 2.3 rom, the device it's not corrected installed and therefore only mounted as CD-ROM... I know that, 'cause I have the same problem and tried all this options. I installed usb drivers that huaei give us on their site, but the problem persists. I tried with both CWM recoveries and both work good on 2.2, stock or custom, but not on 2.3....
Last but not least, go check your imei on system, almost sure U got a 0 on that too, as me. So this is some problem with 2.3 roms that "f*cked up" our phone. Altough usb problem is reversible when installed stock rom, the problem with the imei persists after a stock rom install...
Hope it help some people somehow!
(sorry for bad bad english)
Try uninstalling device drivers, then reinsert the phone and let it install.
What do you see on the CD rom? The sdcard contents?
Hello if you are with cm7, go to definitions - about phone and project menu. Testes other options for usb.

Did U check your IMEI? Please confirm that, 'cause If U have IMEI=0 and usb problem as me or other guy I know, maybe the problems are related to each other, and forget easy options, i tried almost everything, almost sure that when install 2.3 roms. it changes some values and the phone goes nuts, 'cause if you use 2.2 it works correctly as a normal usb device!
Snake_boss, same here...

Tested with cm7, oxygen and miui
Everything works perfect with stock rom or Flb (the one I user now)

1. Stock roms. Custom ROMs: DFT+Magldr, mi7rom, CleanDFT
2. Dev unlocking through WindowsBreak project
3. To deploy XAPs you need Winco's mini WP7 SDK and Winco's deployer wXapAssistant
4. Deploy these 2 apps immediately: Samsung tools (to prevent relock) and WP7 Root tools (file explorer, registry editor etc)
I also suggest you read this thread, it's a bit oudated but it contains all the needed tools today.

Thanks! This steps seem simple enough for me to follow.
I am in a dilemma, help me out guys. I bought a used phone for $90 and its in a pretty good condition overall except for the demo mode issue. I have the option of opting for a replacement, but I am not sure whether the replacement would be as good as this one.
The phone is scratch-less and cosmetically in pretty good shape. I also checked the diagnostic menu and there was no issue found to my noobie eyes. The usual burn in problem with demo units is also not present. I could not check the calling features as its in demo mode. Is there anything else I should look for?
So what should I do? Keep this and flash with a stock ROM (which I am sure inputs by you all will definitely get me through) or I should just go ahead and take a replacement?
EDIT: Any inputs guys???

So I have decided to keep this phone and flash it to a stock ROM.
I was going through the posts referred by you (very helpful) and can figure that the bootloader is working fine. Will start the flashing when I get home from work.
One of the points mentioned in the tutorial says that the battery should be 80% charged before starting with the flashing process - which makes sense. BUT, I am having some issues here. The demo mode seems to be a battery hog, so even if I have plugged the phone to the charger, the battery is getting charged really slow (probably the battery is bad as well). Its been a few hours since I have plugged it in and its still probably at 20% and the phone is getting pretty warm at the back and the front. Is this going to be a problem???

Flashing implies some risk, so having more battery definitely helps. By my experience, 40% is enough but I recommended 80% for the general case (to cover all possibilities). But considering your battery is slow charging, I would do 2 things to charge faster:
- set airplane mode
- turn screen off
So when you reach 40% you should be fine for flashing stock ROM. But I don't know all the particular details so you need to consider all. Normally, flashing a stock ROM takes about 10 mins, so it doesn't require a lot of battery.
And just to be clear, for demo phones I first recommend you return the phone, since these aren't normally sold to users. But that is your choice and again, I don't know all the particularities (for demo phones) or even if flashing a stock rom actually works, for that matter.

That's good, you don't have KK2 and if Root Tools works, it's a problem with your PC, your phone is fine! Make sure you close all programs that may use https connection. I also recommend the reading here (pasting some relevant bits):
Steps for unlocking:
...
6. Open TCPView. (tcpview.exe inside of the downloaded archive) Click on the heading marked "Local Port" until the arrow next to it is pointing up.
7. Look on the Local Port column for any entries labeled "HTTPS". These programs MUST be closed for Chevron to work properly. Common culprits are Skype, and XAMPP. Use Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+Delete) to ensure they are closed if you run into issues.

[Q] Mac User - Android File Transfer not recognizing S7 edge

I must be doing something stupid, but no matter what combination of options I user in Developer Options and USB transfer type, AFT does not recognize the device and asked to restart or reattach. It unfortunately does not work.
Download Smart Switch from here: http://www.samsung.com/us/smart-switch/assets/downloads/SmartSwitch_Mac_setup.dmg
Once it has been downloaded, it will tell you to unlock your phone and connect it.
Once that has been done, click the down arrow beside "Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge"; You will see a folder beside Internal Memory, so click on that folder, and from here, it will look similar to Android File Transfer.
You should be able to drag and drop files into the folders, create new folders, move sh*t around, etc.
Thanks. I'll give it a shot. When I first used the other day I didn't see the file transfer capability, only the basic backup and restore functions.

Yeah unfortunately this is the only way I found to do it on a Mac.
Mac and Android don't really go well together
Worked perfectly. Too bad AFT doesn't work. I assume Google will update to support this phone. Again, thanks.
But Smart Switch is painfully slow in file transfer. There has got to be a way to get AFT working again. Mine just stopped, and when connecting the device, USB debugging on or off, the phone does not ask me if I want to allow the file transfer. I think mine stopped working after installing SideSync, and I never had Kies installed so that solution does not apply. This should not be rocket science!
