[GUIDE] Using Tasker to switch your keyboard when docked/undocked - Eee Pad Transformer General

May not be neccessary for certain users, or devices running honeycomb 3.1 or higher.
For anyone like myself, who uses a different keyboard (I use thumb keyboard) from the default setup (which is the Asus keyboard), an app called Tasker can make it a bit easier for you to switch them on the fly. It's not a fantastic method and there's probably a better way to do it, but for now I thought I'd share what I did with you all. It might not be necessary for your device. It was for me because it wouldnt auto switch the input method or allow a quick change, I guess it depends on which language/model/SKU you have. Just do the following to get a popup allowing you to change the input method when docked/undocked:
----
-In tasker create a new profile called 'Keyboard', click 'ok'. Click 'state', then 'keyboard out'. Click 'Done'.
-Create a new task. Call it 'Docked'. Click 'Ok'. Click the '+' then 'Input' category, select 'Input Method Select'. Click 'Done'. Then 'Done' on the next screen. (This will bring up a screen when you dock your tablet to let you choose the Asus option)
-Click the new task you have created called 'Docked'. Select the task option 'Add Exit Task'. Click 'new task'. Name it 'Undock'. Click 'Ok'. Press the '+', 'Input', then 'Input Method Select' again. Click 'Done'. And 'Done' once more.
-Make sure at the bottom right of the main screen it shows 'On'. and click 'Apply' at the bottom left of the screen.
----
Exclude tasker from any task manager you may have installed.
*Tip* If you keep getting 'Active' popping up in the notification area, go into Tasker>Settings>Preferences>click the monitor tab, then uncheck 'run in foreground'.
Now when you plug the tablet into the dock it should get a popup with a box to let you select the Asus keyboard, so that your keypresses correspond to the letters printed on the keys. And when you undock from the keyboard, just wait about 10 seconds and you should get another popup allowing you to change the keyboard back to what it was before. If you dont get this popup then just press the tasker icon in the notifcation area and select the keyboard you want manually.
All done. Enjoy.

thanks for the heads up..Haven't used tasker yet, will give it a shot tonight.

Wait, what keys don't work when you're not using the asus default keyboard?
Thanks for the write-up. I'm a fellow tasker user and will be setting this up when I get home

No, they DO work if you have the Asus keyboard selected. So if you're already using the Asus one you don't need to do any of this. This guide is for people who aren't using the Asus input method and have chosen to use a different input method, such as the default honeycomb one, thumb keyboard, etc. I've never been good at putting my thoughts into words, so if it's not clear, spell it out for me what you're not understanding and I'll change the post. Cheers.

The numerical button 3 trying to make the £ symbol and the # key making a \ symbol, were a few I noticed. There might be others though.

Ahh gotcha, I'll have to check it out. I use tasker on my phone do i could easily use it on my TF

Thanks for this, makes the hassle of switching keyboards that much more fun and cool!

Wait. I don't understand. I use Thumbkeyboard and the dock. I switch back and forth with no problems. When I undock, it goes back to thumbkeyboard. When I dock, it uses the hardware keyboard. All of my keys work.
What exactly is the problem you're trying to fix with Tasker?

For those of us in the UK, the hardware keyboard defaults to US mode if you dont have the Asus keyboard selected in UK mode. (if that makes sense)
Using tasker gives you a quick visual reminder to switch to the right keyboard.
If you're in the US I guess this issue won't affect you?

i use better keyboard 8, and while it warns me when i put it on the dock, i have not found any issues

Must be a non US issue i have not noticed anything other then the warning. Off to try all the keys

Thanks for the writeup!
I use Swiftkey BETA. I just don't understand why Tasker doesn't give you the option to already select a keyboard to change to. Doesn't make sense to me!

does anyone know how to disable the popup when docking?

That would be good. I guess you'd just have to create a Go Home task for when it is docked to eliminate that initial popup. I added a "Go Home" property and moved it above the "Select Input Method" property and it seems to have removed that annoying "Asus Recommendation" popup.
Perhaps this should be added to the first post on this thread?!

BTW, a bit off topic but I figured everyone here has a dock so I thought I'd ask.
Anyone else's SPACEBAR key seem a bit "louder", as in, easier to press than the rest. Not that it is that much of an issue, but the other keys on my dock seem a bit quieter to press over the SPACEBAR.

Will test this tomorrow when im not half asleep and add if necessary. Thx.
Edit: It appeared to do it the first time for me, but after that it still shows the Asus reminder box. Did you add any other lines maybe? Not sure if the first time was just a fluke or to do with tasker.

It would be nice if there could be better solution for this...

Thanks for this. I don't dock, but have a slideout which i love swiftkey to assist with, and prefer swype for portrait touchscreen on-the-fly. It'd be nicer if it was automatic, but it's definitely more friendly with this popup on keyboard out and task exit.

Swype Tap-Hold Problem

It seems that when using swipe in portrait mode I cant get tap and hold to work. I.E selecting symbols and numbers.
It works well in landscape though.
Anyone have this issue? Is there a fix?
I (and others have mentioned it) gave up on the 3.9 swype for exactly that problem.
well that's not cool... I was getting good at it too. oh well, guess I'll deal with it till an update comes out.
thanks
Two things that helped me:
1) Set the error tolerance to maximum in the opitons.
2) Press on the top half of the button and keep your finger as steady as you can.
It works for me. Though, it is really really sensitive to movement. It does take some pratice and steady finger to get the tap-hold to work. It's usually the '?' that I'm going for. Sometimes it will produce 'mm' or 'mn'..
It seems like they need to make it less sensitive for movement if you're just holding one a single key and not swiping. Or make it deduce that I'm going for the '?' and NOT 'mm' which does not make much sense..

I had the same thing happen. A LOT of our Swype's are faulty. The trick is to google or search xda for Swype 2.0 wvga. This works LIKE ITS SUPPOSED TO. You can use it and the qwerty keyboard arrangement is arranged propertly on the numeric keyboard tab.

Thanks, I'm doing that now. What version came on TMOHD2?
Ok so I downloaded/installed the cab for Swype 2.0 with the htc skin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=60494
The skin looks different, which is great, but swype acts the same. Doesnt allow symbols. Also when I go into "about swype" it is the same version and build date of 1/09
Did I do something wrong?

3.9 i believe. garbage (at least on mine).
So, does the Swype 2.0 wvga link fix the problem? Cause this press and hold BS is really driving me nuts.
EDIT Just downloaded, it seems to be SLIGHTLY more accurate/easier, but still not as simple as they make it look in the video, it's still quicker to switch tabs and type in whatever you need to.

I second this fix. However, you have to place your whole finger on top of the key (contacting the key to the left and right of the key you are trying to press as well) and hold in order to get the secondary set to work.
Swype settings are accessible via Settings tab, Menu, All Settings, Personal, Input, Swype Options.
EDIT: Nevermind, I was only getting lucky with the long press. It still seems to only work about 10% of the time with the 3.9 stock version.
Y not just use the symbol button? It's faster and better than pressing n holding. And as for using the ?, just pressit and drag or swype to the space bar. Same for . and !

For the ? symbol, there's an easy alternative - swype (drag) from the ? key to the spacebar. Wish all the symbols & numbers did the same thing, would prefer it over the click & hold method.
Also - everyone knows about dragging from the swype symbol to around the #5 to go to the numeric keypad and draw from the swype symbol to umm.. the one to the right to go to the arrows/copy/paste screen shortcut?
Anyway, my main Swype problems are this hold/press thing & how hard it is to do manual typing for usernames & password. It's for these reasons that I use SlideIT over Swype at the moment.
Yep... doesnt work for me either. Sucks having go to down and switch it to number mode just to select symbols but I still like it over the regular keyboard.

I was about to give up on swype because of the issue.
then I saw that space bar on random tutorial, it makes it a little bit easier, but still. other symbols are very annoying.
Oops mistake!
Search Google or XDA for SWYPE 2.0 for WVGA. All the problems will be solved. Swype 3.9 is horrid. 2.0 is the truth.
Testing out version 2 on my TMOUS (version 3.9 by drefault). So far seems to be working much better - I can press & hold & get the alternate puncuation/numbers (although I still say sliding any alternate keystroke to the spacebar would be better).
QUESTION - how the heck do I get to options on this version? In 3.9 you went to symbols & help the Swype key down. Google says I click the arrow (stock rom, so 6.5.1) & go to options, but I only gen sense-like options instead.
There another way to get to the options in 2.0 ?

HTC/ Microsoft and Swype don't make it easy do they:
1. Go to settings tab on sense
2. tap menu
3. selct "all settings"
4. select "personal" folder
5. select "input options"
6. BAM!

swype and voice input

ok, so i enjoy the swype keyboard but realized there is no voice input button for it. Am i pretty much out of luck with this unless i want to use my old keyboard or is there a way i can use voice input somehow with this like with a long hold of something.
for speech to txt you have to use the stock keyboard for now... Swype will probably have that option in the future but for now, no such thing
So grabbing the official version is no better than using any of the of swype apk download links floating around?
It is tough to ask us to switch to a different keyboard when that keyboard takes away the voice input option that Android has given us.
no- just check the version #. (Current as of today: 1.56.30.7625.t100)
The 'official' version is the same just handed out by Swype
i think swype blows anything else out of the water when using the keyboard itself. I never really used the speech to txt unless driving so I just switch back when I need it.... a long press in the text box, then select the original keyboard.

Yeah, I'm just being difficult today.
I do really like the Swype keyboard. I'm not a big texter, I barely text - but I'm a big fan of technology and am a programmer so I definitely can appreciate the Swype keyboard app. I just want that damn button.
yeah, I hear ya. I'm sure it will come eventually.... They say in their forums on their website that they are aware of the demand and that's basically it. At least they've acknowledged it so I'm sure it will come.
Wow I've using swype today for the first time and its amazing!
When using swype, instead of swyping hit menu from there you have a speak button for talk to text
If we wanted to add in multiple button presses to get to things we'd get an iPhone ... lol
j/k .. obviously we have to live with it for now, but at least they are "aware" of it. Not that they're going to change anything though.
I just found the arrow button screen by swyping from swype menu button to alt button, there's open spot there for it.

I don't see a microphone. Could you explain how this works?
What app are you in at the time?
The "speak" option is part of Handcent, not a function of the keyboard. I think a lot of people have been confused by the lack of clarity there.
There is no way to use speech input with Swype itself without switching to the stock keyboard. Any option to speak while the Swype keyboard is selected is purely a function of the application you happen to be using at the time.

Sym on hardkeyboard

It drives me nuts there are no '<' '>' symbols on the hard keyboard. When you press alt+space it brings up a popup of extra symbols. Anybody have an idea of how we can make this popup editable? I'm pretty sure its not tied to your IME because it doesn't change when I install a new one or use swype, etc.
I'm not sure where to look on this anyone have an idea?

yeah I thought about making a little app to do that but hate to waste a quick key for that, although I do have an extra one right now. But I just put in a feature request with smart keyboard pro for them to make the symbols popup editable when pressing alt+space. Hopefully they will do it, shouldn't be to tough.
Just heard back from SmartKeyboard dev and he says the popup from pressing alt+space actually isn't tied to the IME and he can't override it. Still waiting back to hear if he know how to mod it. In the meantime back to the drawing board. Anyone know where this popup lives in ASOP?
I would like the quick keys to be the option. I never use them.
I would like a program or hack to remap the quick keys to something.
one would be switching WiFi on and off.
Perhaps I can find an app in the market that does just that with one click, and i can then set that quick key to that prog?
I'll have to look.
ps. Corylulu, your back down to number 4 again

How could I disable hardware keyboard while it's open and use software keyboard?

I know some of you might think this is a stupid question. I would like to use any on screen keyboard while the hardware keyboard is open and disable hw kb until I want to use it. Let me see if I can explain this to you why.
I am starting to like typing in landscape mode with on screen keyboard. I am getting pretty good at it and definitely think my speed is faster that way than a hardware keyboard. Have any of you tried typing in landscape for any extended length of time? I don't know about you but my fingers really start cramping and hurting because I have to hold the phone with the rest of my hands and fingers while typing with my thumbs. When the hw kb is open, this could give me more area to hold the phone a little more comfortably while using a fast software keyboard. My thumbs wouldn't be at funky downward angles to hit the keys, they would be extended straighter and upwards and might be less prone to getting crampt up and carpel tunnel.
Am I crazy to think this might be useful? Has anyone heard of it being done or an app or hack that could achieve what I'm trying to do?
I do understand where you are coming from, having big hands and fingers can suck sometimes, but I don't think its possible. I've tried to see if I could pull up the virtual landscape keyboard with the hw one open but no luck.

I'm not complaining or whining, I'm just asking for help with something that I might like to do.
to answer your question, yes, it is possible.
i just tested this on skyfire, ebuddy, and gmail. if you simply leave the keyboard in, aka don't slide the screen, and rotate the device, the screen will turn and whatever app you are using will also turn (if it supports it). then just click in the text box you want to type in again, and the onscreen keyboard will come up. I'm using better keyboard atm, so didn't test it with the HTC or any others. but i'm fairly positive that if it works with that one, it'll throw up whichever keyboard you are currently using in the same situation.

I think you missed what he was trying to say. he was asking if it's possible to use the on-screen keyboard with the physical keyboard open.
OP, here's an android tip (it works with any android phone): if you hold down the menu button with your cursor in a text field, it forces the on-screen keyboard to come up. You could try selecting a text field, then holding down the menu button.

I know about what you are explaining, that's normal usage. What I'm interested in is using the open physical keyboard as additional area to hold the phone with while in landscape and using the on screen keyboard. I'm thinking there needs to be something to trick the phone into thinking the keyboard drawer is closed when it's actually open.
It seems, as usual, that I am coming up with lame brain ideas and haven't a clue as how to making them happen. I emailed one keyboard dev a few days ago and haven't heard anything back yet. I guess I could shoot out emails to all the devs of the keyboards I have bought and see if I get a response.

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a 1-year warranty on manufacturing defects, regardless of insurance standing or the 30-day return policy? Certainly sounds like a manufacturing defect to me, unless it's broken from misuse
this isnt the place for talking about warantee issues. start a different thread. this is about answering the question in this thread.
have you tried any other keyboards from the market or like the swype beta or anything? idk if it would make a difference. i doubt you can disable it while its open. if you want to use the soft keyboard close the phone? Its probably best practice to keep the phone closed when you arent using the hardware keyboard anyways?

[Q] Move Cursor in Browser or Text Window?

Ok, this is going to probably sound really dumb, but it's driving me nuts.
I've used Android for a few years now, and I've never sorted out if there's a way to scroll left and right in a text area.
No matter what keyboard I've used, I just end up deleting the whole dang thing, and typing from scratch, if it's text in a small window.
For example, if I typed a long url, and I realized after hitting enter that I must have made a typo. I'd like to go left to right in that bar and look for it easily.
I guess this has plagued me on every Apple and Android device I've owned. On RIM it was easy enough, and on older Symbian it was fine.
What the heck am I missing here?
Thanks!
Tap anywhere on the entered text - wait - there will be a blue arrow cursor below the text. Drag it whenever you want to start typing from.

Nifty. That works in the URL bar, but what about other input areas?
I can't seem to make that work in say the google search input window.

Ah, it's a Firefox issue then. I tried chrome and it works in that (though I never really use chrome).
Ok thanks.
I was hoping there would be a convenient left and right key option on the keyboard itself, so that it wouldn't matter what app I'm using, but I guess it's tied to the app itself. That kind of stinks. It's rather awkward in design.
Do you know of an alternative keyboard that supports that type of functionality? I like the "Swpe-like" setup in the stock keyboard, but I'd much rather have an easier correction method built in.
You can enable the function to move the cursor using the volume rocker. It's in Settings - Language and Input - and that option will be down below the input methods
I miss the big keyboard with arrows from HTC Flyer though - it's pretty awesome to use in portrait mode, though not as useful in landscape since it takes much more space than N7's does
And no, I don't know about other keyboard since I don't use them, I prefer stock
