Verizon GS II name = - Fascinate General

Function....
Terrible name if that's what it turns out to be.
http://pocketnow.com/android/galaxy-s-2-us-carrier-branding-confirmed

Terrible name, but it also looks like Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint are sticking with the "vanilla" design. Maybe Samsung/Google pushed them to for faster updates?

Terrible name. The Attain is the only one that sounds alright.

I don't buy it... The site claims it also has a kickstand. Really?

Not all of our galaxy s models are the same. The captivate has a completely different design. And the epic has a keyboard. Why can't the "function" have a kickstand?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

I don't care what they call it. Just tell us when it's going to be released.

The name sucks, simple as that. It doesn't make much sense in how they are treating the SGS phones in the US. While most other phones are sticking a II at the end of there already well known phones; the SGS phones not only get stupid generic names in the first place but now they are making the same mistake again. They can't have a Fascinate II because of the bad taste in everyone's mouth, but why not just keep the name Samsung has developed into a powerhouse in much of the world?
That being said, I hope Verizon has a different strategy for deploying their updates this time around. Fascinate users without the latest software knew their device was lacking Function other phones had practically forever.

Wow, those are some of the crappiest names I've ever seen for phones.
Bow chika wah wah

I call it the bast damn phone this year.....
I also call it, the galaxy S2.....
and last, but no least....I will call it mine!

I completely agree with you, however... The site clearly shows a silicone case for all three devices, suggesting they are all the same form factor. So, sure, all three could have a kickstand. But the case doesn't even show an opening for it. So it's either fake, or the copy team and the graphics team forgot to have a meeting that day.

According to Phandroid, all of those names might still just be codenames like the HTC Supersonic becoming the Evo 4G upon release (only in this case, the codename was better imho). Incidentally, T-Mobile simply named its latest Samsung smartphone the Galaxy S 4G. I still think, though, Verizon will want to give their phone a unique name. If so, let me throw the "Andromeda" hat into the name ring (you see how it's a unique name that still refers to a galaxy?)
Of course, the "Verizon Amputate" is a more fitting name to reflect Verizon's history of bloatware and software updates crippling an excellent phone hardware-wise Plus, it rhymes with Fascinate - everyone say it with me now - "Fascinate!" "Amputate!" "Fascinate!" "Amputate!" We should count our blessings, though - at least Verizon has always allowed us to install apps not listed in the Android Market (case in point: the Amazon App store). It took the entry of a heavy hitter in online content (the aforementioned Amazon) before AT&T saw the light.
Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...

I like the idea of naming it something related to astronomy. The Fascinate had ringtones such as Vega, Sirius, and Arcturus, all important stars that light up the night's sky.
Function is utterly ridiculous. At least the Vibrant and Fascinate were adjectives that could describe something you'd see in the sky. Epic didn't make a whole lot of sense but I didn't have much of a problem with it, considering the overuse of that word these days you can't blame them for trying.
Still, they are basically de-branding these devices. Which I suppose Verizon and the like want, so they have the big name and not the manufacturers. It also helps to isolate the phone just in case it is an utter disappointment, like the Fascinate being one of the very last phones to receive FroYo. A lot of us have suggested we won't buy Samsung again, but if we do, it certainly won't be something called the Fascinate II right?

Function is perfect. Follow me here. Function is short for functional. Something verizon's galaxy s phones have never truly been. So its perfect advertising to let people know that they listened to their customers and built a better "functional"phone. First of all anything from "an anonymous tipster" has no place being considered as legitimate, even for a rumor. Second, there have been three Android Dev Phones, the ADP1, ADP2, and the Nexus 1. All three of these phones have been manufactured by HTC. Why would they change now? Third, anyone who is keeping up with android news knows the Samsung Continuum is Samsung's next android phone, and it hasn't been announced yet. Also if look at the picture on the event invitation it shows Android icons on top of a stock ticker, one of the callout features of the continuum second screen. Even if i'm wrong about them announcing the continuum Nov. 8'th (which I very well may be) I know that i'm not wrong about them NOT announcing this Nexus 2 or Nexus S or whatever the believers want to call it. The CEO is more likely to get up on stage and poop a unicorn.

You could at least wait until it's released, so then we'll actually know if this will help development. We don't actually know if this thing exists (despite what Gizmodo says) yet or what hardware is inside it (it's not a Galaxy S phone if it's the Nexus Two considering Galaxy S phones have TouchWiz built in), so this is basically not helpful at all.
@OP... I understand why you might have thought this belonged in the Dev section, but the truth is that this is at best, hearsay, and belongs in General.
Thread cleaned & moved to General.

Yeah, until we see an official ROM release from Samsung, their statement is nothing more than damage control for bad publicity. Their Twitter "support" was being bombarded with messages last night; it drew much attention from other tech sites. Samsung's next step is to come up with with an official (vague) excuse for the delay and then hope it tides the community over...

The problem is when Samsung and Sprint say ASAP it really just means "Another Sorry A$$ Promise."
I'm sorry everyone. I am the reason why we don't have Froyo yet. Let me explain. Every other smart phone I have ever had in the past 5 years on Sprint was an HTC phone. I went through 3 or 4 Moguls, 2 Touch Pros, and 3 Touch Pro 2s. I thought that since I had so any issues with HTC hardware I would try a different manufacturer so I got the Epic. Well.... It looks like the black cloud has followed me! Anyone want to pony up and buy me an iPhone? LOL I'd love to take this black cloud over there!
Well it is nice to hear Samsung open up and say something, but I sure am getting tired of getting the "details will come soon" BS from both Samsung and Sprint. We've been hearing "details will come soon" for more than 4 months. Perhaps we have different definitions of the word "soon."

I think with another other carrier releasing the 2.2 update for a SGS phone, it will put pressure on other carriers to follow. No longer can they say it's someone else's fault.
But honestly, I bet we'll see noobnl release an operational version of Gingerbread before we see Sprint push 2.2 out.

Who else is of seeing Ginger(everything) on xda for every phone but the fascinate.

Seriously. Everytime I open up my xda app all I see is Ginger this Ginger that..for every phone but ours. Who else is gets annoyed by this? I know it makes me cringe everytime!
Of course no blame goes to our devs who are fantastic. I applaud them for doing what they have done with Sammy's seemingly awful coding (good luck Kaos!) Wish they spent as much time and money on their software as they do on hardware! (which consequently is brilliant!)
End late night rant.

I hate this kind of response.
When I buy a phone, upgrades and updates are part of my buying decision. They're probably part of yours too. If there's a phone with a 900mhz processor and locked to 2.1, and an identical phone but with an 800mhz processor that will be supported for years, I will choose the latter. Whether you like it or not, when the operating system updates this quickly, updates are a feature.

I think the point here is that there never is any promise or guarantee of that support and I'm sorry but a sales person's word is no indication by any means. When we buy our phones we buy them as they are. To gripe about Samsung or Verizon's lack of promptness is ignorant and really annoying after seeing it so much. Normally you can trust the talented developers here to do better work anyway. The best approach is to wait patiently and support them in anyway you can whether it be logcats or donations.

This is my first Android phone (I'd previously been on an old dumb phone made by Samsung, and it'd been reliable the for all the years), and the reps said that Froyo was coming 'soon', and Samsung had already began rolling Froyo out for the Samsung Galaxy S in Europe a few weeks before- I figured it'd be at most a few weeks, not realizing that 'Galaxy S' did not include any of the phones sold in the US!
I was also fooled about the quality of the GPS, when I was first testing it out, I always thought it locked instantly, because I was always around wifi (and Google's Location services have wifi routers geolocated down fairly well). And when I wasn't around WiFi, I saw the big blue circle and assumed that was the GPS just slowly loading, not Verizon's cellular triangulation doing all the work while the GPS was just robbing my battery and doing nothing with it.
At the time, I was hesitant to go with Android. I knew that the devices were generally fairly low quality, while getting slow updates... but the iPhone hadn't been announced on Verizon, and I wanted to do application development, which is massively cheaper to get into on Android than the iPhone ($25 vs $100 + a mac).
Next device will be from a reputable manufacturer, I've learned my lesson.
I know what phone I bought. Thanks for your concern though. Also our phone actually was guaranteed to be further upgraded quite sometime ago.

And like many have said before, sales reps, service reps, and tech reps don't count. They are only trying to sell you a phone and a contract, or placate you with the current setup you already have.

I found this on pocketnow, looks like we'll be seeing a slab in a similar design on the big 3 carriers, according to pocketnow.
Quote;
As we suspected in late March, it appears as if Samsung will be bringing the Galaxy S II stateside under the brand names Attain, Function, and Within. According to an item description posted by etailer Wireless Xcessories Group, AT&T will supposedly get the Samsung Galaxy S 2 Attain, Verizon the Samsung Galaxy S 2 Function, and Sprint the Samsung Galaxy S 2 Within. Notably, T-Mobile is not on this list, suggesting that it will either not get the handset altogether, or carry a modified version -- as Sprint does with the QWERTY-equipped Epic 4G.
Also of note here, assuming that this page is accurate, is the fact that the case being advertised is model-specific, suggesting that all three of these variants will look very similar to one another and probably to the international Galaxy S 2 as well. That would be quite different from the original Galaxy S, which differed quite a bit on each domestic carrier, and probably speaks to a shift in the balance of power between Samsung and the network operators following the success of the first model.

I read that article as well. The only change I hope they make is having all capacitive buttons instead of the physical button in the middle, not that it would stop me from buying this beast of a phone.

Yeah, personally I prefer less iphoney look, but my main concern would be sprint/samsung offering me some kind of early upgrade, otherwise I'll be forced to pass.
On another note tho, it would be crazy if this plays out to be true and mr.T-mobile gets the epic4Gx2 or whatever they call it. If that happens I can honestly say, I didn't see that coming.
I sure hope the announcement is for the Galaxy S2!!!
My step-daughter wants a phone,a nd I would get to give her my Epic and get the S2, as long as the release date is not to far off

Yeah my upgrade is in August, so assuming there isn't anything way nicer on the horizon then, I'll be getting this.
Yay for GSII! I kinda like that name, The Samsung Within.

Hmm, that makes more sense after seeing your post, wimax 4G/ sgs2=thin....merged= wiTHIN
I see now engadget has it and I noticed this case in question says it has an opening in the back for the kickstand. Now I don't believe we heard anything about the international sgs2 as having a kickstand.

US Galaxy S II variants named: AT&T Attain, Verizon Function and Sprint Within!

So The carriers have there names trademarked for the new gs2 in the us. SAD NEWS ---T-Mobile USA is notable for its absence; that could be because the carrier isn’t getting a version or, perhaps more likely, because aesthetically it is different and the gel wouldn’t fit.
heres the article:

What do u guys think of the new names and wht do u think of no tmobil sg2 name???
That's weird that we aren't getting a name. Im sure we'll get one though.

Those names suck! T mobile is probably thinking of a better name or they are waiting for their watered down device to get done! Because you know T-Mobile always has to take something out so they can introduce a new device 4 months later!
Runnin Bionix 2! Yeeee!
yah but werent we first last yr to launch and have it named?
Crossing my fingers for the same model as international just with AWS bands added.

We were dead last to be named, but first to be released, so I guess that's what's happening here. We are probably getting one that looks exactly like the i9100, just they haven't come up with a good name for it.

The names, they are just terrible.
Just call it the Vibrant 2, seriuosly is it that hard.

Or, it could be missing because of the pending AT&T merger... doubtful, but just throwing it out there.
i also heard "there isn’t a T-Mobile name because Samsung is expecting that AT&T will have purchased them by release date…
T-Mobiles SGS2 will be the Samsung Inferior <-- Sounds better than all 3 other names doesn't it. Sad but true
That sucks if Samsung isn't giving us a Variant because of the merger. HTC is still giving us phones(Sensation). Boo on Samsung if they are doing this.
EDIT: I will never buy a Samsung phone, no matter how good, again.

Yeah, was not trying to imply I knew that was the reason (merger), just speculation.
tKoHaXoR, how do you know the name?

That was my thought, too. Maybe TMo just figures it's only going to have the phone for six months before it becomes part of AT&T, anyway, so why carry it?

Hey now, easy with that logical thinking, you know how that goes around here.
And, I think the quoted name was a joke, Samsung Inferior, fitting, but a joke I am sure.

nice to see an update for states side but those names are horrid.

This is horrible news. Samsung has to (yet again) cater to the unstandardized U.S. carriers. Just look at what happened to the Vibrant (correct me if I miss a few details):
Front-facing camera removed
FM radio removed
LED flash removed
Added a key with a search function that's useless most of the time
Added T-Mobile's crapware along with a unique Android source which delays official updates
I'm pretty sure similar things will happen with the Galaxy S II variants for the U.S. this time.

Oh, and those names are terrible.
