[Q] Replacing the default search engine - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've searched the site for XDA similar requests and come up with questions on how to change from Google Mobile to Desktop or debrand from Bing back to Google or change Opera's search behavior but my question stands.
How does one change the Nook's default search app to use a different search engine (ie: https:/ixquick.com), completely de-Googlizing the in-built search app. Not just the widget or search app but also the in-built Nook browsers?
Using a MN rooted Nook Color 1.2.

If you really want to accomplish this you might want to try: http://hoelz.ro/blog/adding-duckduckgo-as-an-android-browser-search-engine
to set up your desired search engine.
I haven't tried it but a friend of mine did it on his NC but he was running CM7. I don't know if it will work with rooted 1.2.

[Q] Google Search Reintegration idea...

Hopefully a dev out there will read this and know what could and couldn't be done when it comes to this (i have some basic knowledge on some android programming but when i say basic, i mean basic...) but as most of you know the google search widget is back on the fascinate and works correctly if you have an ALTERNATE homescreen and you must use that homescreen (no more touch wiz). Now I personally prefer the touchwiz launcher over all the rest (i had a droid 1, then got a 2 and returned it for the fascinate best thing ive ever done imho) and im sure that there are some other people out there that feel the same way but HATE bing with a passion, such as myself. Now, more to the point, my idea is to take the touchwiz launcher from another galaxy S device (or the one that everyone has been able to use for non-rooted non-galaxy s devices for a while now) and simply make it compatable with the fascinate (I tried installing it myself and it failed) im guessing it failed for some version number reason or something of the sort (maybe all itd take is renaming the processes? idk) OR perhaps just go straight to the problem and someone dig into the TWlauncher on our fascinates and find where verizon has made them block all google related search widgets/icons (I cant even put the google voice search icon on my launcher ) Any and all input is both welcomed and thanked
bump with this as well
why?
Once rooted, you can fix the soft (short and long press) search button, which pretty much acts in the same fashion as that widget. I understand the frustration of not being able to install any widget once rooted, but that's a good enough solution. I prefer the TW launcher too.
I would wonder where the system defaults to Bing from. Even running a custom launcher, and using the google widget, the search button on the phone triggers a bing search. Would this be integrated in the TouchWiz launcher, or in the browser the phone ships with?

You have to install the EnhancedGoogleSearchProvider.apk from the "Bing removed! Google is BACK!" thread to fix the hardware search button. The browser is also hooked to Bing, so the fix for the browser search is to use a different browser for now.

So it's both then. Done, and done. Replaced the stock launcher in system/app with ADW, installed the search provider apk, and am running skyfire as default. This. Thing. Blazes.

Viral Bing via vzw ?

Having a problem last two days with vzw home page overriding browser/google settings and then forcing searches through Bing. Search starts in google to about 50% then loads the vzw page breifly before ending in Bing. I am on a debinged device and it wasnt a problem for the week before on the same rom.
Is it possible a market app swapped something and where might I look to find it ? No matter what I reset in the browser seetings or clear, the behavior returns.

A search on debinged browser will help you find answers. If you are rooted you will have more options. But there are things you can do to minimize the influence if bing searches without being root.
One solution that I used was to replace browser.apk with the one from the Samsung Mesmerize which is the Canadian version of the Fascinate which doesn't use Bing
There is another file that will give you google search on a short press of the search key. But not google voice search with a long press. To get Google Voice Search you can install Vlingo (a nice voice recognition application with lots of features)
Another option is to use a different browser like Dolphin (I like Dolphin Mini) and set your home page to Google.
For a google search widget you can install LauncherPro.
Lots of ways to go. Searching will help you find details.
Thanks for the reply, but maybe I wasnt clear. I am fully rooted, running an eb01DB_DXC.tar with eb01 lockscreen mods, some swapped touchwiz and buddies .apks and other minor mods. Google voice search is disabled and everything is set properly settings wise.
The search function worked properly for a week, but something has changed to create this new behavior. I already tried Skyfire as well.
I understand the need to search and I do quite a bit. I just cant find a reason why behavior would change when there is no apparent reason to based on the device config.

Add duckduckgo to search engine list in Android Chrome?

I have installed the DuckDuckGo Android app, but what I would prefer is to add DuckDuckGo as the default search engine within the Chrome Android browser. That does not seem possible as Chrome, Settings, Search Engine only gives options for Google, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo UK and Bing.
Any ways around this?
Larry
I too am trying to figure this out. The only thing I found so far is this -http://hoelz.ro/blog/adding-duckduckgo-as-an-android-browser-search-engine

[Q] Change default browser for Google search widget results

On my Nexus 7, Dolphin is my default browser. However, when using the Google search widget, results are displayed in Chrome, and not Dolphin. After the list of results is displayed, then the link opens properly in Dolphin.
This issue would not be so irritating if I could long-press on links in the initial page of results and choose to open the link in a new tab. However, that option is not available, for some reason, so if I want to view several links, I have to keep going back and forth from the initial results page. This is very irritating.
So, simple question: how can I get the Google search widget to open the initial results page in my default Dolphin browser? If this is not possible, then how can I get the links in the search results to open in a new tab?
Thanks for your help.
Still hoping to make this work
I'm still hoping someone can help me figure out how to ensure that search results using the handy Google search widget open in Dolphin browser, which I find to be far better than the stock browser. As I mentioned earlier, once I choose a link, that link opens in Dolphin. However, the search results page does NOT open in Dolphin, and I am unable open a search result in a new tab from the stock browser, which is irritating.
Any ideas?
Can you clear the defaults on either the search widget or the browser and reset them? Maybe that will get them to switch.

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I did clear the defaults, which I believe is why the search links open in Dolphin. However, the original search page stubbornly sticks with the inferior stock browser.
This is not a problem with the phone running ICS...just my Nexus 7.
Stock rom, rooted, 4.2.1. If you are rooted there is a way to remove Chrome as the default browser and place the default nexus browser (not chrome) from the nexus phone rom as default. I did this and Voice Search & Google Now open web searches in it. I side-loaded Flash and it works great with that browser. If you want to make Dolphin the default, I don't know about that.
If OP has rooted, stock Rom or otherwise and still has Chrome Browser - go to Store/Play to download free app called "AntTeh App Manager" and use it to freeze Chrome (thus, disabled it) That should allow Dolphin Browser to be the only one - boot into Custom Recovery & wipe dalvik cache to be sure, restart - and all searches should be going to the Dolphin.
I am using Boat Browser & Google Search and/or Voice Search, etc. will launch & show results in it. (rooted Stock 4.1.2 - franco kernel)
You can unfreeze Chrome & go back to it anytime as you wish as it's not deleted, just hidden & will no longer shown on the Apps list, unless re-enabled.

any way to get rid of Bing in Silk browser?

I hate bing... How to replace bing?
From the pull-down menu:
Settings>Apps and Games>Amazon Application Settings>Silk Browser(this opens "Silk Settings")>Advanced>Search Engine
Then select another option (e.g. Google).
I went to settings and checked Google for the search engine but Bing still comes up. Even though Google is still checked.
Same thing for me! I can't get rid of the Bing search engine even though Google is checked!
Silk always uses Bing by default (probably cuz of the Amazon/ Google feud). I try to avoid using the SIlk browser at all costs. If I want to do a hands-free search, I use Google Assistant using DragonFire1024's guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/guide-enable-google-assistant-ok-google-t3740145
You have to use this version of the Google app since the newest versions aren't working so well with the Fire HD's: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aZ4PbJdZ_Jo8oNZYdQX9oJvS6ym4AjuV/view?usp=sharing
