Does anyone know why the Desire got the froyo update first when the Legend actually came out earlier than them?
Because Desire is HTC's flagship, top of the line, finest product would be my guess.
And I don't how heavy 2.2 is to run but Desire comes with the 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and will run a less fine-tuned OS better than the Legend (this is also a wild guess)..
Edit: another reason is the N1, with almoast the same specs as the desire meaning its easyer for htc engineers to modify it for desire.
will the legend ever get the update ?
I sent a question to HTC yesterday, asking when we can expect the update on the legend... This was their answer:
"Android 2.2 (Froyo) update is sent out to customers in waves. This is done so we don’t overload our system. And because of this it may take longer for some of our customers to get it. You can try searching for it by typing the following: Settings -> about phone -> updating systems software -> Search now"
Not sure if she misunderstood me, I specified that I've got a Legend, but I would guess the response could be interpreted as if she thought I've got a Desire. I dunno. I just want the update.

even the EVO got the froyo update ... so i dont think thats the reason ... its probably cause the Desire has a larger user community then the Legend ..
I'm pretty sure we'll get it but we will have to wait until all other phones made in 2010 get it.
Because the Legend has the smallest community.
That's just simply what HTC needs to do, satisfy as much people as fast as possible.
So after all EVO users got there updates it's probably going to be the wildfire who's next and then probably us.
The legend hasn't specifically been named, but they have said that all android devices made in 2010 will get the update in Q3. So the legend will get it, just be patient.
Are you serious that even the Wildfire will get the update earlier than us? This must be the biggest joke ever.
So HTC's strategy is to get the more popular phones updated first and place the less popular ones below?

I dont think the Wildfire will get it before the Legend. The Wildfire is a mass-market low-end device unlike the Legend.
I think the delay is due to addition of new features like Live Wallpapers, as Froyo gives a supposed 450% performance boost that coupled with the same graphics chip as the Nexus One and the Desire should give the Legend a lot of processing power.
I agree. The Wildfire will probably get it before the Legend.
But the Legend will get it before Q4 afaik. Since HTC said all their 2010 devices would.

think on the bright side .. HTC trying to integrate live wallpaper into froyo 2.2 for legend user that why it take so long..
who said wildfire community is bigger than the legend .. i don't think so ...
Are you sure that Legend is getting live wallpapers? Where did you hear that?

I just suppose it is, it is much more price friendly therefore much more in the price tag that most people are looking for.
jonas :
yea right , but still the extra money offers better specifcations and many also will think put the extra money for extra quality ..
but anyway wildfire first or the legend it dosen't matter but the most important thing that they should not forget the legend ..
Its probably easier for HTC to update the Wildfire because of its lower hardware specs.

Yea, probably not.
But no one can know which gets it first.
And if the Wildfire gets FroYo first. It's probably because it's newer. But as said before. All 2010 HTC devices will have FroYo before Q4.
Hopefully.. Never know with HTC.
if the wildfire gets the update i will have no doubt that the legend will get it because of the similir specifcations and hardware ...
Hello.
HTC promised upgrade to Froyo for Legend before the end of October, but it is now November and still no update.
On Italian Android Forum, owners of this phone are rightly angry, and decided to protest strongly on the htc facebook page. So I also invite you to protest, so that the protest is larger and HTC should listen.
The page is
http://www.facebook.com/HTC
You can write what you want, like "Froyo on legend!" or "Htc sucks, we want Froyo!".
Had a quick look at the page and you're right, there do seen to be a fair amount of people shouting for the Legends long overdue FroYo but I'm doubtful how much attention HTC will pay given the phones they've just release and the upcoming handsets.
That said I'll still be adding my name to the list. Otherwise its back to custom ROMs for me

I do not know if HTC will listen to our messages on his page, write once a day, "We want legend" does not cost anything.
Htc page is now full of messages like that, so we continue to write.
How often does HTC check their Facebook page lol..

They should've ensured this update to be released as sheduled. 3 months passed since desire got 2.2, legend update was sheduled at Q3 those days. September aka Q3 passes, htc says we'll have update by the end of october etc. etc. Seems like they hired some bull to regularly defecate on update's status
What i mean is: it must've arrived months ago, w/o any bugs

Well, they have ensured that quite swiftly for other phones. How come the Legend is the most difficult?
HTC Lies every day because the Gratia´s port to Legend woks fine, the only issue are the drivers.

Okay I'll add my name on the list... let's see....

Whilst the Froyo update has been promised and HTC seem to be making Legend owners wait some time for it, they are letting themselves down even more by not even fixing the SMS bug problem which deserved an immediate patch as it is a broken feature.
Have a feeling...
I just have a feeling that HTC just wanna grab the opportunity to sell a 'metal' desire phone to the consumers first.
It seems peculiar that as much as HTC claimed low stocks of AMOLED, a sudden black phantom of the legend popped out of nowhere...
hence, it is possible that the legend was delayed because:
a) it will be given HD recording... Possible, but unlikely. I think i've read somewhere that the specs for the camera is similar to the desire. This could be a reason htc wanted to hold back the market for consumers to get a metal desire (and thus earn more instead of a legend)
b) people are craving for metal phones. The Legend sold well. In my country, all exclusive providers sold out the legend. (and it went to sell on 3 major telcos). this might be the reason why HTC wanted people to start picking up the HD and Z version of the desire.
c) they might try the new htc sense on the legend. Who knows? I'm not sure, but i think the gratia has no new sense... (i could be wrong on this).
Whatever it is, the legend was pretty much the litmus test that htc needed before manufacturing metal phones. Reason being was that the original desire DID NOT HAVE a metal casing. Why? The desire is HTC's flagship! And possibly, the legend has been overshadowing the desire quite a bit, and making it more likely that they might just want to put the metal switch to desire before bumping the legend. If the bump the legend now, people might just pick up more legends instead of waiting for the Desire hd and z...
Whatever it is, the desire hd and z has been launched... I expect froyo to come to the legend within a week or 2 after that...
For it to FOTA the legend to froyo before the new desires reaches all corners of the world is VERY UNLIKELY...
I honestly do not believe this.. i recon HTC is just interested in selling more phones and while doing that they devoloped loads on new products and tossed the legends development department staff along with the rest of the desire crew. and now that they are selling well they eventualy will pickup (when time allows) to continue the 2.2 little by little.
Never buy a mid range phone from HTC.
The history repeats. First circus with HTC Hero and now with Legend.
our protests have taken effect and HTC said that the update is imminent.
but they repeatedly said the same thing, and then continue to write.
Holy ****, it worked...

There is a difference between releasing an update which updates existing OS's and installing a rooted ported OS from scratch. HTC have said they are having trouble with the Market after installing the update, much like the issues the Desire had.
Personally I'm quite happy to wait for a polished product imagine how much more you'd moan if they released it with loads of bugs
Hi, guys. Since arco's post whether there will be CM9 or not, which will be Android 4.0 in all its glare, for our precious and beloved device ive started to think about upgrading my phone to something more, let me say, powerful. To be honest this phone gave its best in a sense of a development and using new stuff which hits every day. We saw some pretty much good stuff on a little fire which none of us expected when first came here. There are at first Cyanogenmod, first 6 and now 7 which led us though great Gingerbread experience till its latest version 2.3.7. In one word CM was the beginner of everything that was happening around here in pas year and little more, than we saw some nice themes and they juiced up our phone a little more to our taste. Than there is better camera recording, overclocking. I should at first say root, but never mind, than came AlpharevX with its s-off. Well, not to make it long, there were a lot of nice moments. And as for me ive learned a lot, so thank to everyone who helped me in any way.
But like any other device out there and this one will come to an end of its development era. So, the question is it time for retirement? What would be your next ride? Im thinking about Sensation or EVO 3D, that is if i collect enough money Anyway, ill still be here for some time. Please, share your thoughts...
Best regards, zexcrazy
I am done with HTC, so it will definitely not be one of their devices. (Quality issues abound - Sensation touch problems, Wildfire battery problems, my friend's Desire's display gave up when he didn't do an iota of modification on it, during the first 6 months, and, not to say, the entire locked bootloaders and the leaked info security hole fiasco). Not to mention, their devices are WAY overpriced for what they offer. Even today, in India, the ZTE Blade costs 25% less than the Wildfire! The Incredible S costs the same as an LG Optimus 2X!!
It's only a feel good in your hands with their devices. I agree that Samsung devices don't exude this. My Wildfire feels better in the hand than a mate's SGS1, but still, if it's innards and quality don't match it, the "premium feel" is worthless.
/End rant on HTC
While I loved the new SG Nexus, As far as my opinion goes, the GPU is not worth on it on that device. Using a PowerSGX 540 on a flagship is simply not worth it, and that is when it has a LOT more pixels to push, compared to a WVGA resolution screen, so, my unrealistic dream still remains the SGS2, which, I sincerely hope undergoes a bit of a price cut when the SGN launches.
On to the realistic devices, as I have said time and again, I am impressed with the SE Xperia 2011 lineup. They are simply unbeatable for what they offer. (Again - the Wildfire S is COSTLIER than the SE Xperia Mini which has the latest SnapDragon 1GHz CPU in it), and, with CM supporting the devices, and SE themselves saying that the 2011 lineup WILL get ICS 4.0, my next device is probably going to be one of theirs.

You are right about everything you said, but Wildfire is my first andrid device and im somehow sentimentally bounded to HTC, but well you never know where the road can take me. I though about SGS, as a cheaper solution (price is a important asspet in my case, for now). One thing is sure im not going to take LG as i had few bad experiences with them in past.
And you are right about SGN, they made few poor moves with graphic chip and 5mp camera, but i recon Samsung is saving its strenght for SGS III.
I get what you are saying, and, even I would definitely like my next device to be an HTC (More so, because companies like Samsung and LG, they are essentially consumer goods entities - the air conditioners at my college are by Samsung, the refrigerator at my place is by LG, and so on, and, this fact is what comes first to mind when you say companies like Samsung and LG, but, HTC is just that - a 'specialist' smartphone manufacturer), but, I am somehow forcing myself to see beyond their brand value and look at better alternatives for the same price. (As you put - Price comes first)
I will definetly stay with the Wildfire for a couple of months more. Now i have the new stable Version and everything runs smooth and fast. I don't need faster devices, i like it how it is right now. Maybe i will buy some new in the future if there is enough money, but i havent thought about it yet.
There will be CM9 for the Wildfire.
I'm an optimist.
If not... I will probably buy the G2X or Sensation. G2X more likely for the price. Or a Nexus S? Who knows, I'll discuss that with my wallet.

I have my eyes on a few phones atm. Can't afford any high-end phones, so are looking for something in the mid-range. First idea was to maybe get a Wildfire S, since it should be pretty easy to do developing on. But seeing as the bootloader is still locked and you can get a much more powerful phone for just a little bit more money, I'm looking at some other options. 3 phones are currently on my list.
LG P970 Optimus Black
Huawei Vision U8850
Samsung I8150 Galaxy W
Of these, I'm leaning most towards the Samsung right now.
I agree the Wildfire and its successor are great My First Androids, but my next phone will likely be a Samsung too even if that would mean it's the same brand as my microwave oven. However, at the moment I'd rather buy a Motorola Xoom and "degrade" my Wildfire to "just a phone" for the time being. Xoom + extra battery for Wildfire (gotta keep that access point running) is cheaper then buying the Galaxy Nexus plus when an ICS phone hits the stores I can still extend my current plan for 2 years to get it.

Not likely. ICS requires at least a dual-core ARMv7 CPU. You could get away with a single-core ARMv7 but a single-core ARMv6 is stretching it quite a bit I'm afraid.
Galaxy W is pretty decent upgrade and as for me it much more reachable than some of the flagship devices i am dreaming of.

I wouldnt agree. They said that ics will be able to run on any device whic was able to run Gingerbread. So if we take official gingerbred suported phones there is Wildfire S which has 600Mhz processor. So its not true that it requires dual core.

I reckon the wildfire has about 6 to 12 months more left in it. Oath it has been where no one thought it would go. First got the official support from HTC (finally!). Everyone really wanted it and foolishly upgraded changing the bootloader/hboot. That is where I went, I foolishly upgraded then met xda. Seeing so many things happen and I really wanted a custom rom. It started with the urge of really wanting live wallpapers then it grew from there. Waiting for a software s-off, I stood optimistic that one was "coming" even though so many said it wouldn't happen and that the only way would be to use the hardware tool XTC clip. Waiting for so long I managed to get my hands on AlphaRevX. My phone being a locked phone on telstra it was loaded with the custom carrier hboot 02 instead of 01. Alpharev refused to work on these custom hboots so I stood on freenode until a dev came online and managed to hack up a telstra s-off hboot for me to test. I managed to get my s-off with it but by then alpharev team dropped support of hboot 02 because they would have to hack every hboot for different carriers. I soon began to flash roms and read up on all the nice roms. I tried CM7 but hated it because of the interface, I managed to fall in love with the sense interface and couldn't get away from it. I found the sense 2.1 rom and waited for it to get more stable but it was discontinued so I took over. I built my knowledge and now I am working on the rom SenseOnFire. So thats my story. I think the wildfire isn't its time yet and there are so many fantastic devs around here that don't and won't give up on this device just yet. The CM team will be able to hack up something for this device I just know it. Just think before the wildfire got official froyo no one would of thought it would ever run gingerbread.
I`ll upgrade in about an year or so, but I won`t buy a phone with a screen larger than 3.5 inches. Maybe a 3.7 of the bezel is small enough. I don`t like ping-pong paddle type of phones.
500th post, yay
I like big screens. 4 inch would be ideal for me.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
Gingerbread will probably run on a T-Mobile G1. Google never said "any", they said "most". The Wildfire also lacks a GPU so ICS on a Wildfire wouldn't look the same as ICS on a Nexus either.
And I agree with Alex_GP, overly large form factors are a modern reminder of those old clunky phones from 2 decades ago. The Desire S seems nice in this regard, a little bit thinner and a little bit less wide but also just a bit taller to accommodate an HVGA(!) screen. But then it has that annoying capacitive search button which always fires at the wrong moment when held in a right hand. So I guess I'll wait for an updated version of the Samsung Galaxy Ace and hope it's not as slow/fast as an overclocked Wildfire.
I think I'm going for the HTC Sensation XE.
Since I got the Wildfire, I realized that pixels ARE important (atleast for me) so qHD will be perfect for me.
4,3 inch is also perfect. Not too big, or too small. (my bro has desire HD so I kind of know how big it is).
The XE is just a beautiful beast
And luckily HTC said that it'll get ICS.
I'm not sure when I'll upgrade, but I guess soon. Maybe next week or something..
Can't stand the ldpi thing and the slow performance..
But will keep my Wildfire as a backup device.

So today i read some articles about the new Desire C ( dutch articles most of you wouldn't understand them but google is your friend )
So basicly this is some sort of Wildfire type phone. Low specs. And guess what. It is rocking ICS.
I don't understand why HTC is bringing out this low spec phones with ICS and not updating the Desire Z with ICS.
Yes it is probably because of sense 3.6 being to heavy for our phone.
But as i recal there once was a HTC Desire who was not supposed to get a Gingerbread update and it still got it because the users were not satisfied with HTC behaviour on this.
So basicly my point is. We need to let them hear our voice on this and go ahead and sign those petitions that were started weeks ago if you did not do this then.
Many thanks!

I know that and I did not state that it is not. You were probably confused with my 3.6 statement. HTC is not updating older phones with sense 4.0 but with 3.6 and that is why we won't get the update. It is simply to much for this phone. But we could get a slimmed to version of 3.6.

No...Look at this as a low specd phone with ICS; Opening a SLIGHT REMOTE AND SMALL oportunity that our HTC Desire Z might get a ICS update. Facts are in: HTC Desire HD will (at some point in 90000000000 years) get ICS which has a lot in common internally with our phone, the Desire Z is the last QWERTY phone from HTC, and a way lower specs phone (except in internal space) has ICS before us. Why do people say they "should"? They shouldnt do ****. Back in the WAY old days, phones were never updated. These updates are free and they do it because they want to. They arent forced to do anything.
And you people obviously do not run a business or know how it runs. Here is a hint: PROFIT. Why would I, a phone maker, update my old models when I can simply release a Desire Z 2 (for example purposes) with the only difference is that it has ICS and sell it for 400 and lower the Desire Z 1 at 200? Thats called smart business because everyone wants the new model and if they cant afford it, they can go for the old one.
NO COMPANY IS FORCES OR SHOULD PUT OUT UPDATES. They release updates because they want to.
IMHO, i find it unfair that DHD users are getting their ICS upgrade while we are, well, most probably not even though both the DHD and DZ are launched concurrently.

Why do people say they "should"? They shouldnt do ****. Back in the WAY old days, phones were never updated. These updates are free and they do it because they want to. They arent forced to do anything.
And you people obviously do not run a business or know how it runs. Here is a hint: PROFIT. A little detail i have to fix in your post... HTC never said anything about releasing a new phone with a hardware keyboard, they should update their latest because there will be no more newer version (unless the One Z is real... Which is not)...
———————————————
i didn't mean to flame you, nor to mock you in any kind of way
probably HTC did hte math and decided that neither a new Z phone or updating the old one was worth it...
We can keep asking .. you'll never know!
But You'll have to agree with the fact that is all just about money...
The whole argument with "phones did not get updated in the past" is kind of stupid. Phones are not what they used to be. It is not just a phone anymore it is a pocket computer.
Also they also did it with the desire so if we try hard enough maybe we can get official ICS.

Probably we won't be seeing a successor to the Desire Z. And that is just sad. But I used my friends' note and typing on it wasn't that bad. The general trend is moving away from h/w keyboards.
I doubt there will be an ICS version for our Desire Z ever. Cause where is the attraction of buying a new one WITH ICS?
I´m running my two DesireZ with Andromadus beta ICS for a while now and I have the feeling of having a new mobile in my hands. So I gave up the thought buying a new one That's exactly what they do not want..
Mike
I don't care much for ics as gingerbread has all the features I need, and unless there is a flawless ics rom why bother. I won't get a new phone (if my g2 breaks ill buy a used g2 from ebay) fact is that many g2/dz may not get another htc phone when theirs goes bad for many of us want a hardware keyboard. So why not move on to something else especially if they get a discount with a new contract. Untill we see a comprable yet updated phone from htc with a hardware keyboard they will probably loose more money than if they just released ics for our phones in the meantime while the g3 is being built. In the sense that we will keep these untill the g3 comes out. The g1 was the absolute best phone untill the g2, if there isn't a g3 then another company will certainly make the best phone and even the die hard htc fans (me included) will change our minds.
Just my take...

So in light of the following news are HTC going to bring out something special or just quietly dye by the way side?

Bear in mind the current fiasco with ICS and the Desire HD.
So are you going to jump the HTC ship?
Ya well, the one series was a miss with consumers at large ,can't imagine what would have happened if the one x for example had sd card storage and a battery access
We can only hope they die a quick but painful death.
... unless they release ics source code then i don't care what they do.

I am already planning my jump over to Samsung rightly or wrongly, but they are talking about launching JB on the S3 and even the S2 in the very near future! And from what I have seen they seem to deliver what they say!
Well I wouldn't want them to die, afterall competition is always good, however I've decided that my DHD shall be my last HTC phone after all that has happened. I'm contemplating on waiting for the next Google phone, immediate updates and a bugless AOSP experience, what else could one ask for?
That is what you get when you mess with all the HTC Desire HD owners!!! Not releasing ICS for their most sold phone and telling their costumers lies about HTC Desire HD performance. And the same with HTC Desire.

Agreed, I cant believe they would release such a retarded phone and a clear attempt to copy the iPhone business model.
I'm due upgrade now but think ill just stick with my DHD.
They should have concentrated all efforts on savage battery life combined with expansion of mem.
That is the general consensus I am feeling form this thread

It’s a shame that a company with a lot of promise has now just peed of its fan base and almost washed their hand of them.
If you look at the number of ROMs in the development thread you can see that people pretty much rooted their HTC Desire HD as soon as they got them as the hardware far out preformed the software that was loaded and any potential update (although we all knew these wouldn’t come to light! lol )

Don't forget Samsung is from South Korea, so why keep spending money on SK if you know that "everyone" in SK has a Samsung phone :silly:
I hope they won't cancel the ICS update for developers. They had the same problem with Gingerbread update for the Desire.
They never released it as an OTA update, but they released it for developers.
So let's hope they do the same with Desire HD (in the future).
About One-series. It's indeed a sad story, but I think why most people didn't bought the One-phones was because most of them were probably waiting to see the Galaxy SIII and it seems that the SIII is the number one choice now for lots of Android users.
That or the New Galaxy Nexus (fingers crossed it won’t be produced by HTC) that will ruin the Nexus name IMO

Why would HTC ruin it? I like HTC's hardware
1 months ago I planned to buy the One X along with one of my best friends and I almost sell my DHD (it even already entered the "For Sale" thread in one of Indonesia's largest community forum). But after I read so much informations from early adopter of One X about how bad is the HTC's quality control over One X hardware productions I hold my decisions to upgrade because I don't wanna spend my time dealing with HTC service center.

Tierd of htc, they were the best option when i bought my dhd. The new one series cant beat s3 imo. Im going for nexus next, nothing beats (not even s3) the new android stock interface.
