faulty touch screen on google io tab? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Hey guys,
I was writing an app today and I was having trouble when pushing two buttons at once. I checked it out with Multitouch Vis Test and the same problem occurs.
What happens is that I touch in two places, then take one of the two fingers off. The tab believes that both fingers are still touching until the second finger is removed. This is quite frustrating. Has anyone else noticed this issue?
Hopefully this is just a software issue but I have a feeling it could be a problem with the touch screen itself.
I'll upload a video when I get home.

I tested with mine. I used Multitouch Visualizer and I was able to get up to 10 fingers simultaneously. It would also update correctly when I removed only one of them, six of them, whatever. Sounds like something is wrong with yours my friend.

Curious because mines on the way... Since these were given out free, does Samsung still provide warranty coverage as if the tab were a retail purchase?

HTC HD2 Touch Screen Bug

Any fix for this ugly bug ?
Before HTC HD2 i had iPhone 3G, and it had no such bug.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRrKEDP59XE
This bug works on all apps, the biggest problem is when you type text on virtual keyboard, all buttons around are triggered.
Get a life man.
Obviously it has a sensitive touch screen. It is not a bug. You can decrease the sensitivity using BSBtweeks amongst others. But if you touch and twitch your finger on the screen that's what you get.
And if you don't like it go back to you iPhone.

there are a lot of faulty devices initially which were released. claim your
warranty, bring this back to where you bought it and show them your problem

it is not bug it is due to over senstivity and it is common in capastive screens even my iphone do it but not so much as its screen is smaller
just don't use the tip of your fingure
there are any. cab to lower the sensitivity enough to solve this problem?
thank you very much

you obviously have a defective unit. I tested mine exactly the same way and doesn't have this shaking screen at all. (even at the maximum zoom level at opera.) try to get a replacement.
i was having problems with the sensitive touch screen, not as bad as most, but very annoying. the main one being when trying to press the back key on the keyboard it would randomly hit a letter instead bout 1 outa 5 times. most other things where quite good.
Phone was still quite new so i returned it to virgin for a replacement and this new one works perfectly. Also, my old one had the visible matrix at angles where as this one does not. Also, the sticker on the packet says rev.B. Not sure if its relevant.
Anyway, to some it up, if you are having screen problems that are souring your phone experience and like me you can get a hassle free same day exchange, i'd go for it, cos the difference is really quite large. Previously id adopted to using skype as the normal qwerty was too innacurate for fast input. but now i can type quickly and accurately in portraite mode on the normal keyboard. Pinch to zoom seems to be working much better now aswell.
I have BSBtweeks and low sensitivty in that movie. On/OFF no big deal same effect.
I guess you guys don't have iPhone 3G and don't know how to real TouchScreen should work.
Why are you keeping your finger on the screen for so long?
Why not ?
For example, you scroll web down, and up in one move to see it all etc..
or u use Virtual mouse like notebook touchpad to control your pc cursor over wifi. etc.
I do it on iPhone without this bug.
get the same probleme and bsb don't change anything

I try and I try and I try but I can not replicate the problem in any software at any zoom level....
I have turned the tweak on and off and still cant make my screen do that maybe your phone is faulty,
i had the same problem, get your phone replaced under warranty !
i sent mine out under warranty repair and foud that they did nothing to fix it so i rang them (o2) and told them the problem is still apparent.
they sent me recondtioned model. cant tell the difference (physical) between reconditioned and a new one if you ask me!
i dont have the shakes with this phone
I got the exact same problem. Screen shivers like crazy, damn annoying. Bought in Norway... So it goes under warranty? I thought it was supposed to be like this......

EVO Video of touch Screen Working

We have seen multiple videos of the screen grounding issue and there are many that say theirs does not have this problem. I have two evo's and they both have this issue. I would request those who are not haveing this issue to please post a video of their phone's touch screen working while not grounded. It is not that I think anyone is lying, I just wonder if maybe the issue is not being tested correctly. I just want to see someone's that does not have this issue so I can be confident that if I return mine I have a chance of receiving one with out this problem. So please anyone that does not havethis issue show video of the phone on a pillow or bed or multiple ungrounded surfaces with the phone not plugged in to anything and demonstrate the drawing app and also the pull down notification so I can see one that works. Thanks in advance!
It's not consistent, I hadn't noticed it until after I found out...I noticed a screen tap wasn't registered when I clearly pressed.
If you look at the demo images, it shows it does work, but doesn't always work...it's not consistent like it should be.
Yes I know that it is inconsistant... that is the issue. What I am asking for is to see someone's that consistently works while not grounded. I want to see if there is even one evo out there that has a touch screen that works as it should while not grounded. I believe that possibly those that say they dont have this screen issue may not understand what we are saying or are testing it differently.
mines having the issue hold it in my hand its fine lay it on the desk it messes up
I had never noticed this until I did as you suggested and use it on my pillow and sure enough I have the same issue. Not sure if it matters or not to me yet since I only notice it during this testing and not with every day use. Guess I will have to think about it!
Just tried this out on a pillow and for me it is just the top 1/3 of the screen that goes unresponsive. Tried it with the marketplace and i could scroll just fine through the list of apps at the bottom but from the Apps, Games, Downloads Tabs up, the screen is unresponsive.

I returned my first Evo because the screen in the portrait notification bar area was dead to touch.
My new unit has no issues whether lying flat on a desk or on a bed or pillow.
Mine is going back to Sprint a new one issued, just waiting for them to get the new batch in.
I called them yesterday about it and let them know it is being returned for a new one.

Do you have a video of this?
Up until just now I thought mine was perfectly fine but I just tried setting it on a pillow and doing it and lo and behold, it's a little glitchy at the top 3rd of the screen. It's perfectly fine laying flat on a disk or stack of papers though.
This doesn't seem like such an issue to me though. Not as much as the 30fps issue. When am I ever going to be lying my phone on a pillow using it? I always hold it in my hand anyway.
If the original poster wants to keep a tally: I have the problem and have the 1st hardware revision. I also confirm grounding the screen itself did no fix the issue (since I have the invisible shield). However, the problem was immediately resolved when I grounded the battery/phone negative terminal by running a wire from it to my bare finger. Touching the screen with my other hand/finger showed the issue had disappeared.
I posted a video on YouTube, but xda won't let me post links since I am unverified.
So I am coming to the conclusion that this grounding issue effects all evo's, seeing that not one person can produce a video of it working otherwise.
My evo works fine no matter what its on. I post a video later today.

Works
Mine works. I haven't seen an issue on any surface or lack of surface. The four other's I know who have the phone haven't had this issue either.
Mine works too, no grounding issues here. Why no video? Just don't feel the need to prove anything to you.
My EVO doesn't have this problem at all. I put it on a stryofoam plate and it was slightly less responsive, but still worked on all parts of the screen.
Mine doesn't have the screen grounding issues, but my colleague's does. I used the phones side by side and I see how the top 1/3 of his screen doesn't respond when laying flat. Mine works perfectly. Unfortunately I have bad light leakage above the buttons where his doesn't.
Nathan
No video necessary. Just do what I outlay in my post:

Takes only a few minutes and you can see immediately and with real accuracy whether or not your phone is working properly.

I am asking for video simply to see if there are any phones out their that do not have this issue. If u don't want to help a fellow evo enthusiast out fine, but seeing how I have not seen a single video of the phone on an ungrounded surface which does not suffer from this issue j doubt you are testing yours the same way if it is not giving you the same result. That
Is why a video would be helpful. Because if yours indeed does not suffer from the problem then that means that there is chance that if I returned mine that I could get a working model. So if you want to help fellow forum members out... post a video.
Does anybody in here ever USE the kickstand?

Touchscreen Controlling Itself

I picked up my Nexus 7 about a half hour ago, woke it up and all of the sudden it started clicking things on its own. I wasn't even touching the screen at all. I had to lock the device for it to stop doing it, and after waking it back up the touchscreen was twonky. I would touch, but it wouldn't register until like the 3rd click. I restarted the device and its fine again.
I have the screen separation issue, though its not bad and doesnt bother me so I havent considered sending it back. But now that it has a mind of its own, its kind of freaking me out. I am unable to replicate it so far and I can't find anybody on these forums who has the same problem. Any ideas what is going on?

I had the same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago.
After waking it up from sleep it started touching itself.
I restarted the device and it hasn't happened since.
Hope I don't have to return it.

I had the same thing happen on Saturday. There were odd solid white line outlines around the icons as well. I had to force it to power off and restart it. It's been okay since.
Ken
I too experienced the issue. I can replicate the issue by running "Gallery" app, select an album, set it on Slide Show mode. Within 15 mins or so, it will start malfunctioning.
I've discovered how to reproduce the problem on my tablet:
1. Put the tablet to sleep by closing smart cover or using a magnet
2. Plug in wall charger
3. Open the smart cover and the touchscreen malfunctions
The screen does not malfunction when I put the device to sleep by pressing the power button and insert the charger.
Can anyone else confirm this happens to them or is it just me?
My nexus7 is controlling itself after 10 mins of playing a game... this is nuts?
EDIT:
Really PI$$ED off now. Travelled to the shop where I bought it. Told them they said "they have to see the problem" I sit there for 25 minutes playing a game, google earth...anything to create this problem.
NOTHING.
get back home!! gusss what? stupid tablet is controlling itself again! OMG this crap is annoying.
edit: I sold the nexus. It had a fault on the screen. I paid £70 and managed to get £80 for it so am happy with that at least
Same issue!! Is someone remotely hacking in??
I have seen the exact same issue on mine. Weird and very worrying. Have seen apps being opened and pages being scrolled. Has only happened twice in the past few weeks (that I have noticed). Have checked firewall logs on my home network, but unfortunately my ISP has made the UI more 'user friendly' even in advance mode so can't get any actually useful information from the logs (though I don't have any port forwarding active). My only guess is that it is therefore:
A) Random HW/SW issue - seems unlikely, but possible I guess
B) Some nefarious app giving external access (all apps from Play Store though)
Will try and get a video of it next time to put on Youtube nad have installed the logcat app (though to be honest I don't really know how to use it).
Anyone else seen this or have any suggestions on what to do?

May I ask. Have you used a case that has a magnet that may have touched the screen? I theorized that this may have happened to mine because right where the magnet clipped the case is right where fault started. When i touched the screen just on the edge in that spot it started going crazy.
So I sold as faulty

Hi - I have briefly (only use it when travelling and have it in a bag to protect it from knocks and scrapes), but the case was never around when the screen has been off doing it's own thing....so I would be surprised if there was a link between a small magnet being near it a few times and a recurrent fault of some kind.

I read somebody else used a case with a magnet and thought that slight chance that it could've caused the fault. I know on the one I had I could instantly recreate the problem by touching in that place a few times. perhaps just a coincidence?

My device has a similar issue randomly. Detects inputs that aren't there. Most of the time it is one prolonged input. Sleep then wake and problem solved. I don't know if I have the screen seperation issue or not. My device is only two weeks old and has never seen a magnet before.

Bought 4 Nexus 7's for the family for Christmas and one unit had this issue. Read up about it before returning it the next day. Apparently it's a problem with the digitizer (I think that was what the hardware piece was called). Basically made the N7 unusable because it'd detect other "ghost" touches. Especially annoying when trying to unlock the device. Long story short, the unit was returned to Staples and replaced with a new one. So if you're is still under the "new buy" warranty I'd definitely try for a replacement.

Ditto, + 1 here and my ex-N7 16GB WiFi unit was from local Staples, 1 of 2 "open-box" ones that they had in stock, no wonder manager was "kind" enough to approve a 10% discount for it, hmmm - SOB quite possibly knew it was a problem unit returned by another customer & just wanted to pass it on. It had 4.1.2 loaded and intially, the OTA upgrade to 4.2 seemed to make things better (false.)
It was horrible with the sluggish & un-responsive touchscreen and even unlocking, especially bad over time as I had managed to unlock the bootloader & root it to load custom Rom. It's as if the hardware had a keylogger installed and/or was hacked remotely, trying to take over the tablet and typing its own command as I input gmail account info & password - freaking mad crazy, to the point as others said, I started checking the wireless router's firewall & security logs, etc. for signs of breach, etc. and even release the DHCP to get a new external IP on our Fios link. Disabling WiFi seemed to at least "calm" it down but made the device useless. GPS radio/receiver also seemed to be defective. To make a long story short, it has been returned to Staple as we are within the holidays/14 days technology product return & exchange timeframe - and, of course, all 16GB WiFi models are out of stock everywhere - ended up paying the difference & traded up to a 32GB WiFi model - S/N beginning with "CAO"s and has 4.1.2 on it
Noticed the immediate difference - this one is perfect and no hardware issues whatsoever - and so far so good and with all the issues cited about 4.2 - staying with 4.1.2 for now by disabling the fraemwork, etc. to stop the annoying OTA upgrade reminder. Unlocked & rooted, tweaked it with the goodies & Flash Player 11.x loaded with Chrome browser removed, this is what a N7 should be like.
I have had a similar issue twice. I was reading a webpage when all of a sudden a pop up appears asking where I want to send it to, then it gives me a list eg. Dropbox , email, etc. I never press anything and I didn't even know what wanted to be sent lol. Hopefully its nothing serious.

My issue as of late is that when I click on small links surrounded by other links on a web page using the stylus, an adjacent link often opens. I am using the hover-dot for the stylus, and both it and the tip of the stylus hit the link that I want, but it actuates another one. The work-around is that I have to double-tap-zoom the screen and tap the link I want, then I can zoom back out.
Anyone else having this problem?

I am also using the zoom feature to open the links. It's a bit annoying, but a workaround...for now
Hey, I still am on the very first version of the note firmware because I don't want to screw up s note.
I get the problem you are describing once in a while, specially if the tablet hasn't been rebooted for days. My solution is a simple reboot and then the responsiveness of the touch is perfect again.
Also to mention is another issue which I get after a few days once in a while, the screen resolution all of a sudden seems messed up. The colors turn out weird and u can see definately more pixels. Maybe the display improving system of the note screen gets turned off some how and i get the pure 1280x800 screen. Luckily a reboot also fixes this. Also both issues happen very very rarely, maybe once a week.

I got a new Note 10.1 about a month ago (July 2013) and I believe it already had the updated version. The touch worked perfectly for about two weeks then - bang - can't touch link at all if it's small, can't get right link if they are close... Sometimes I don't know if I'm trying to touch a link that's "grayed out" or if I'm having a touch problem. I've even had to rub at a link to get it to work. But the keyboard and system buttons seem to work fine???????? How bad do dry hands/fingers affect touch?

Multitouch problems on Note 3 (Mostly fixed fix by Samsung)

Update April 1st 2014: Many owners of a Note 3 these last few months have reported that their updated firmware does not suffer any multitouch issues (anymore). A few people have reported that newer firmware has re-introduced multitouch issues, so I'm still calling it "Mostly fixed". I will update the opening post if this status changes.
Below text is still phrased like the problem is "current" in many Note 3's. Will update that part soon.
------
Hi while checking my new model Nexus 7 for (minor) multitouch problems with the apps "MultiTouch Test" and "MultiTouch Tester" I also tried these on my Note 3. Here I discovered that fingers/touches kept disappearing even with only 3 or 4 fingers on my European Note 3. Just moving the fingers about made 1 or more touches disappear. Since then I discovered the problem is much more severe, and can happen with only 2 fingers on the screen, making it far more likely it will disrupt normal phone usage.
If you're interested if your Note 3 has this problem, for warranty sake or otherwise, you can either follow the written steps below or try to emulate the videos.
3RD UPDATE:
A procedure to check whether you have the multitouch defect: (UPDATED on October 12th)
1. Download and run a multitouch testing app of good reputation (I tried both MultiTouch Test and MultiTouch Tester).
2. Put 2 (or more) fingers on the screen of your Note 3 in a horizontal line in landscape mode. You can also use Portrait mode with 2 fingers (shown in the second video below).
3. Move the fingers slightly about, trying to have both (all) in a straight horizontal line.
4. After only a bit of trying one (or more) detected fingers should disappear (become undetected) or ghost touch detections should appear.
To make it easier to detect these 'glitches' you can either use more fingers (3 should suffice) or try to emulate the videos below. If you don't have the Multitouch problem on your Note 3 then please also fill in the Poll so we get an idea of the scope of this phenomenon. Thanks!
Video showing 3 fingers 'gltching' in landscape mode: (beside a Galaxy Note 1)
Video showing 2 fingers 'glitching' in portrait mode:
Video showing erratic Multitouch behavior with more fingers: (through an "unwilling" participant )
(moving your fingers around a bit you should have the same Multitouch issues with only 3-5 fingers on screen)
Ps: I included a "Have not tested yet" entry in the Poll, fully expecting a user to change his/her choice later on; the xda forum software doesn't allow changing either the Poll or your choice unfortunately.
Mine works ok with 4 fingers. But with 5 or more, it's where the problems start.
What exactly does this mean? Not expecting to use more then 2 fingers at once. It seems pointless to me. No?
It's hard today use 5 finger on the phone

It seems I would agree, but seeing the commotion on the Nexus 7 forum and the impact on control glitches while playing games I thought I'd raise the question. Better to know and understand then pure ignorance.
Agree, that's why I asked.
Personally I don't remember one single time that I have used 3+ fingers on the screen.

I had that problem too. I noticed that when I didn't manage to drift in Mario Kart. I had to change my controller layout so it is not symmetrical because the problem seems to appear when your third touch is at the same level as your first one (sorry if that doesn't make any sense, English is not my primary language).
(I have a N9005 btw).

I had that problem too. I noticed that when I didn't manage to drift in Mario Kart. I had to change my controller layout so it is not symmetrical because the problem seems to appear when your third touch is at the same level as your first one (sorry if that doesn't make any sense, English is not my primary language).

Mine is a N9005 too. There must be many more people with such a defective Note 3 but not yet discovered it.
sounds like a touch screen driver problem. contact samsung about this. if they know it they will fix it at the next firmware release.
Did you use the built-in "show touches" feature in developers options to rule out any app compatibility issues?

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, with such small round indicators, that feature doesn't help much in discovering suddenly disappearing finger touches.
I have used the latest version of both apps ("MultiTouch Test" and "MultiTouch Tester") mentioned in the openingpost. Sofar it seems that some people have the issue and others haven't, which would indicate that the problem is inside the phone, not the app(s).
A procedure to check whether you have the multitouch defect:
1. Download and run a multitouch testing app of good reputation (I tried both MultiTouch Test and MultiTouch Tester).
2. Put 3 or 4 fingers on the screen of your Note 3 in a horizontal line in landscape mode.
3. Move the fingers about trying to have at least a couple in a straight horizontal line (still in landscape).
4. After a bit of trying one or several detected fingers should disappear (become undetected) or ghost touch detections should appear.
5. In my case I can have 3 fingers on the screen with only 1 or 2 detected.
Today I got assured from somebody working at a local (Dutch) Samsung service center that Samsung won't exchange or repair my phone with the knox warranty flag set. They will just send it back and void the warranty. I'm also sure that many more people have this defect but don't know it yet, so it could become wise (or crucial ) to check for this problem BEFORE rooting your Note 3.
I will make a mention of this situation in some rooting topics so people are warned beforehand and can do a quick check for this phenomena. On my phone it looked like a Nexus 7 type defect which I am sure a lot of (smart phone) gamers will find highly undesirable.
Yup, definitely have this issue myself. Very worrying.

neoKushan, thanks for your comment. Sofar you are only the third or fourth with this defect I am aware of.
I added a poll so we can collect data on this without everyone needing to reply (not that I want to discourage anyone from replying ).
Yes, my phone does have this problem, when I put more than 4 fingers on the screen horizontally or very closed to each other, it's shown only 2-3 fingers, sometime only 1. I dont use that many finger on my phone but it just bug me to know that I have a defected phone...
I can reproduce it after a lot of moving the fingers around but it's not easily reproducible. I'm not sure if I brought it back to the store they would recognize it as a problem since it mostly works normally. Is that how it is with others, or are you able to easily reproduce it time after time?
When I align three fingers one can disappear after messing with it for awhile. But if one does disappear and I put a fourth finger, ghost fingers appear and it spazzes out. (in any case, i have to mess around quite a bit before anything weird happens)
I haven't rooted yet, should I take to T-MOBILE and show them? Will they just dismiss it, like it's not an issue?
Is it REALLY an issue? I really want to root my phone, but I don't want to have issues later.
It can certainly be an issue (the 3 finger version at least) if you play games on your Note 3 using on-screen controls. Someone earlier here mentioned Mario Kart.
No problems here
I have the SM-N900W8 Canadian
All multitouch test apps work fine for me
All fingers move and detected perfect
10 fingers were detected (5 were mine, 5 were my co workers) =O
wtf?
first test, with 6 fingers looks good. I did some strange movements, everything looks ok.
but you are right, in landscape mode, with 4 fingers on a row,
very strange effects are visible.
2 from 4 focal points are temporarely lost.
tested on a german version gt 9005 stock rom without root, yet.
