so my aunt purchased a Nook Color from a friend and he told her he rooted it so it has access to the Market and a Launcher etc. He said it was when it first came out, so I'm assuming it was done with Autonooker 1.01 or 1.1. He didn't do a great job because Softkeys doesn't work at all so it's kinda of a pain in the ass to navigate around.
So I want to upgrade her to the latest and greatest to give her more functionality and Netflix. I know I want to probably flash a custom rom on it like CM7, Nookie Froyo or etc. How should I start with this, should I do a hard reset?
Any direction where I should be looking would be appreciated.

http://docs.google.com/View?id=dfnmhnzb_9c3q6kxhj
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xj1EdpYb7M
Me needing a video i think it says something about me not really understanding what you guys do but i think its great and it makes the Magic alot more fun so kudos to all of you!
So the Android 1.6 SDK came out and i want to put it in my Magic. Im worried because im not sure if it is compatible with the myhero rom because it uses android-sdk-windows-1.5_r3.
It would be great help if someone could answer my question and/or direct me to some instruction to get it on (if even possible). Also if it is possible when i upgrade will i lose all my contacts/ apps? (either its supose to do that or i messed up in the myhero rom because when i upgraded i lost all contacts+ apps )
Thanks ahead!

If you don't know much about making Rom's yourself you should wait for a developer to release a cooked rom with donut (android 1.6)
In the android market you can find "ASTRO File Manager" you can use this to backup several things.
Hello community. I just purchased the 3.5mm myTouch and can't decide if I should attempt to root it (just learn the term two days ago). After reading tutorials, I feel that I could do it without bricking the device, but I still have some doubts. For example, if I root my phone, would I still have access to the apps that came pre-loaded with it and also to the android market? Tethering would be the main reason for me to root, but what would be the easiest to use rom for it? I've never had a smartphone before, and I really only wanted this one for quick internet queries and checking my email; that said, is it better for me to root?
Forgot to ask. Is there some website dedicated to HTC Magic running ROMs?
Hi,
You can root it for thethering but you can only use the stock system you already have or the one from the Fender, AFAIK. Other ROMs won't work properly (touchscreen issue).
Here is some reading about this and here is a Rooted Fender Edition ROM by Cursordroid. I hope it'll help
Thank you for the info. From what I read, I think I will rather wait for the people developing to finish working their magic before I try to root my phone. I am honestly at a loss with all the technicalities of it and do not want to do something I will regret.
Well this is my very first post/thread on XDA so hello all
I have been told to visit this site if I need help so, here I am.
Okay so I have just signed up for a contract which includes the HTC Wildfire. I want to update it to 2.2 (comes with 2.1 if I'm not mistaken)
I have read up as much as I can but it all really means mumble jumble to me. Anyway I have been told (by a friend) that I must first root the 2.1 and then download the 2.2 and put it in a recovery file. It this correctt?
If so how do you root a phone? Do you just download a file and run it? Also what is the best one to use because I have been reading up and there seem to be an awful lot of different ones.
Now I need to update it to 2.2, how? Is it a case of downloading a file and running it on the phone or what?
Also does any of this void the warranty on the phone?
What are the advantages of going this whole rout rather than just pushing the update button and letting the phone update it's self to 2.2? (Is it just so you can download paid apps for free or is there more?)
Thanks in advance guys
Mikrouwel
if you don't know which version you get, it's a bit early to ask question, as if its a wildfire froyo with hboot ver. 1.01 you already updated. And can't root it as yet.
If it's a wildfire eclair with hboot ver 0.8 you root it and put on a special ruu img file that doesn't change the hboot 0.8 to 1.01.
But ofcource this you've would already have known if you had searched the forums.
Sorry to say so, this is also my first post on xda, but i've been able to read and search......
Firstly, it seems your basic concepts are all muddled. There's no method which you will use which allows you to install "Paid Apps for Free". I have no idea where you heard it, but, to do that, you don't need 2.2, or any special ROM.
Secondly, there are two methods to get 2.2:
1: The official route: This is the route which you think will allow you to download paid apps for free (i.e. by simply clicking update on the OTA Notification). Although nothing of that sort happens. Anyway, back on point, if you do this, you will officially get froyo 2.2, but, most of the features of froyo will be disabled (eg: JIT), and, you will not be able to root your phone, and, in this process, install root apps, custom ROM's etc.
2: The unofficial way - In this, you will have to root your phone and put a Custom ROM. The advantages are many fold - You can get a ROM to your own liking, which is fast and free of bloat, and, customize it exactly to your liking, apart from many additional features like true Apps2SD, Live Wallpapers, Ability to completely backup, overclock and underclock your phone etc. Further, you can even get Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread, if you wish
Obviously, now, it is upto you which method you take, but, if you want to learn to root and install Custom ROM's, refer this guide, and just read it completely:

Okay thanks very much

Hello guys,
sorry for probably not having searched long enough, but there is just a mass of threads to dig through...
A friend of mine has the Motorola Atrix and I want to help him upgrade it to the latest rom version, plus root the device... so I was wondering what method to use and which rom etc?
Myself I own a Samsung Galaxy i9000, so I know how many different roms exist for each device lol.. but no clue about the atrix (yet).
My friend is visually impaired and in order to change the display dpi we need to have the phone rooted.
Hope you can point me in the right direction so I don't have to spend too much time researching about this atrix.

For custom rom, try GingerMod 2.3.6 #7, best ROM i ever used, runs so smooth and better battery life...

Thanks man!
That gingermod rom looks nice, unfortunatly it doesn't seem to support german. (forgot to say that my friend doesnt understand english so well and thought roms would usually always support german lol)
So are there any good with german language anyone can recommend? Preferably with Motoblur, or does motoblur get f*cked up by dpi changes?
Really frustrated. I thought that I had adaquately backed up Froyo - apparently not.
I need a ROM that works. If I need to install Gingerbread first, I would really appreciate knowing which version. I have tired two and neither installed. There is just so much conflicting information in these threads that I am totally confused and frustrated. Then there are too many download links; Some work; Some don't.
The good news is that I am running linux on my PC which should make things easier. Suggestions guys? Please!!!
