I was able to get backtrack 5 up and running on the Vibrant.
I need to clean up the grammar, but I was able to get this to run pretty quickly. My writeup is here: http://blog.l-lacker.com/security-backtrack-5-on-a-galaxy-s-phone/

Update:
Complete package files are uploading now but its at around 750mb at the moment. I will split it and upload it hopefully later tonight.

Dont format your SD.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Right. No need to format the internal sd card. I was simply mentioning that the vibrant needs it to be FAT32 to operate.
90% of the files you need come from the official backtrack site.
The 10% (which is just 1 file) comes from another XDA member who essentially resized the official backtrack img file to something that would fit within the constraints of the fat32 4gig file size limit.
The quick version at the bottom of the write up should cut the confusion.

I received the same error. You need to alter the /usr/bin/startvnc file to match the phones resolution. Which is 480x800.
Then it will work perfectly.

not sure what "ext4 hack" youre talking about, but there is an ext4 mount script. itll give you a little speed/performance kick overall. but its not really a hack, its a fix. type this in a terminal emulator app..
su(press enter)
mount -o remount,noauto_da_alloc /data /data(press enter)
youll have to type it in after each reboot. or you can use an app to run it after each boot. most custom kernels already include it or some version of it, stock doesnt include it.

So I did everything you said, repacked (no errors, everything worked fine) now when trying to flash it gives me this "error in/tmp/sideload/package.zip (status 6)" Do you have any clue why this would happen?

{INTRO TIME!!}
Alright, so I've been following threads on native Ubuntu and other Linux on Iconia A500, and they all seem to be aimed at experienced developers and veteran Linux users. Although I'm new to XDA, I've been using Linux for a while.
This thread is aimed at new Linux users and those who need a command-by-command tutorial on building a rootfs and getting Linux up and running on their Iconias.
Everything is working besides GPS, bluetooth, and sound. I'll try to find a solution after I get to 10 posts.
***DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK***
OK, so here goes...
1) Make sure you have a multi boot boot loader on your tab. I use skrilax_cz ICS v6. If you don't have a boot loader, read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619913
2) Flash the recovery Linux kernel from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158260 and while you're at it, also download that xorg.conf, we'll use that later.
3) That kernel can only boot from mmc1p2, so you'll need to partition your SD card. Start by loading Ubuntu or a similar Linux distro on a computer and use GParted. Make a small general storage partition in FAT32, make a large EXT4 partition (this is where you will store Linux and boot it) and optionally, you can create a 1-2GB Swap partition.
4) Now here's where the real work starts.................................
4i) install qemu ARM stuff on your Linux machine. For Ubuntu - sudo apt-get install qemu-user-static
4ii) plug in your flash drive and locate the /dev point of the ext4 partition. For Ubuntu, use Disk Utility and it will be something like /dev/sdx2.
4iii) unmount partition 2. open a terminal, enter sudo mount -o /dev/sdx2 /mnt/Linux
4iv) run sudo qemu-debootstrap --arch armel sid /mnt/Linux
5) now your base system is installed. chroot into it using sudo chroot /mnt/Linux /bin/bash
6) install your wifi drivers apt-get install broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source firmware-b43-installer firmware-b43legacy-installer b43-fwcutter then download this http://www.mediafire.com/?ycq1ro22vrwks6z extract it and copy it to your sd card /lib/firmware
7) install your favorite window manager. I use XFCE4 - apt-get install xfce4
8)set root password - passwd root
9) type the password you would like to use for root. nothing shows up onscreen while you do this, but WORRY NOT. type exit to leave the chroot environment.
10) unmount SD card
11) pop into tablet, turn on while holding volume down (in portrait mode)
12) enjoy.

This is taken from the android kitchen op as a method for finding the mount points within a specific Rom. It should work for any one in the dev section.
"If the stock ROM images for your device contain the recovery.img file, extract its files from the kitchen menu: Advanced --> Tools for boot image --> Extract from boot.img/recovery.img in any folder. Then, open up its ramdisk folder, and look for /system/etc/recovery.fstab or /etc/recovery.fstab or similar FSTAB file location. Open this file to find the mount points." Hopefully this helps ya

For anyone's future interest I found it by searching for: nexus 7 partition layout xda
Edit: Will do some peeking at a ROM script tomorrow (if I have time at work) and port my tool. Last time I ported this to a device with JB native was SGS3 and the person who flashed a ROM afterwards got an error about 'error encrypting' he couldn't tell me anything more and I don't have that device and don't have that issue with my G2x's hacked JB, so I said eff it.
My nexus 7 had slowed down recently. So I was advised by someone here to reinstall the stock rom. So I backed everything up that was on it and installed the latest version of android (4.2.2). It worked. It's not slow anymore. But there's one problem. I can't delete any files on it using es file manager. I get a message saying "cannot delete some files. Please make sure that your storage is not mounted as read-only". I don't know what that means. Can someone help me?

You can delete unwanted files straight from TWRP Recovery. TWRP > Advanced > File Manager >SD Card > Select Items > Delete.
Well that worked. But it's too much trouble to have to go into TWRP just to delete a file. Why can't I delete it with ES file explorer like I could before I reinstalled the stock rom?

And SU or SuperSU (whichever) is active, with root permissions being granted as needed?
Depending on where you're working you may need to ask for write and mount privileges through terminal.
For example if working in /system:
Code:
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
Caution do not do this if you are not experienced. You may damage your system.

Hmm I'm not sure I understand. I already put it in rw mode in the es file explorer app under tools/root explorer. But it still won't let me delete things.

Guys something is definitely not right. I just noticed that I can't read or write or edit text files (.txt). When I try to open a text file with es note editor it says an error occurred while trying to open file. Why is this happening? I almost wish I never did a fresh install.

Have you looked into TWRP > Advanced > Fix Permissions?

Hm weird. Under the assumption that you are doing everything correctly, it should work as superuser permissions supersedes all and any limitation unless the file is open preventing it from being written to. If that's the case you will have to go through recovery as Username invalid suggested to edit the file.

I just tried that. Unfortunately it didn't work. And it gets worse. It seems like I can't do anything to the file system at all. Meaning I can't create a new file or folder. And I can't edit or delete what's already there. I haven't tried to download anything yet. But that probably won't work either. This is terrible.

Nope. Can't download nothing. I just tried to download the music video beat it by Michael Jackson from youtube using the tubemate app. It said: Error: open failed: EACCES (permission denied)

I read it. It says to fix it I have to remove and recreate the virtual device and change the size. But I have no idea what that means or how to do it. Why is everything so hard?

If you can install apps, install root explorer from the store. Its the better tool for this type of issue. Also install terminal emulator and try the command that was in one of the replies above.
How did you return to stock?
Please don't fall back on the I'm a noob thing and expect people to hold your hand. The more you do/learn yourself, the better help you can expect here.

I returned to stock with the nexus 7 toolkit. It does everything for you. But it doesn't seem to help with this. Anyway I looked at those apps, and root explorer is $4.00. I don't mind paying for it. But I want to know if it's a necessity to have before I buy it.
The other app (terminal emulator) has multiple versions by different companies. How do I know which one to get? Here are some:
Android terminal emulator by jack palevich
Terminal emulator by cityapp
Shell terminal emulator by mobildev
Terminal IDE by Spartacus Rex
There are even more, those are the free ones.
