Browser Quick Controls - Acer Iconia A500

Anyone else try out these slide-out browser quick controls?
I 'love' them. I turned them on a few days after getting the tab and havent looked back.
How about you?
To enable this feature for the stock browser go to settings - labs - quick controls and make sure the box it ticked. Now in the browser, slide in from the side and a wheel of sorts will pop out with all your controls.
Very slick feature.

I have been using them since day one. Love it.

Yes, they're handy once you get the hang of them.

Very nice, thanks for sharing that tip!

Where is this? Dont have an entry for "labs" under "settings"?

Settings in the browser, not general setting on the tablet. Top right corner in the browser.

I think it actually comes enabled by default on the Xoom; needless to say it was refreshing to see when I first started using the tablet. Using the menu in the upper right hand corner is not as user friendly.
The only thing I have noticed is that it is difficult to initiate controls with the acer case, because the edge comes right up to the screen. I usually have to attempt the gesture a couple of times in order for the controls to come up.

I've never had that problem. Simply slide your finger 'into' the screen, from the bezel. Works like a charm every time and I love how it appears at the exact position your finger made the sliding motion into the page, rather than a single static location.
If I had one feature request, it would be 1 more button you could use to hold it as a handle to slide the wheel up or down the side, and tap it to pin it or unpin it.

Heh - didn't even know this existed until I saw this thread. Not sure I like it though - I usually close the last tab to close the browser (since back makes you step through all pages viewed and home would leave it open.)

How do you close the browser with last tab? The tab disappears and browser turns full screen everytime specially when there's only one tab left. I find it hard to bring the tab to appear again.

funny I know... I open up a new blank one... close the last one and then hit the back button to close the whole thing out... he he... I woudn't mind if the tabs were up there all thetime or use a quick menu to pop it up and down...

You can actually just do a long press on the webpage and it will bring up the tabs at the top, then you can close them.

Yup. I just tried that and it does indeed work. Thanks for the tip!

That's how I do it right now, but sometimes it selects the text for copy/paste instead of displaying the tab. You really have to find an empty spot on the browser page to make it work. Adding a new tab and closing, then closing the last tab requires a really fast finger to catch the last tab. Sometimes I'm slow to click on the last tab and it just hides again. How I wish the default browser has an option to exit, similar to Dolphin browser.

Why the desire to have an exit, to hide the porn your surfing?
Keeping the browser in memory is useful, because that is alot of what I use this thing for.

I don't know how to look for this on here..HTC sense quicklinks?

After installing the update from TMO, The little bar that flips between mail, home, internet, images, music, etc. "shrinks" into a little black tab in the middle of my screen at the bottom.
This is super super annoying because it takes an extra effort to click on the damn thing and then slide my finger to scroll. This also requires a second tap on the screen when i go to browser because the first one simply 'collapses' the little thing and the second one will actually respond to the internet icon you're tapping on.
Tell me there's a way to turn off the collapse of this stupid thing. I tried looking on here but I don't know what keywords to use to search this out. Something like 'htc sense update hd2 registry change' yields nothing.
TIA

It sounds to me like you have cookies home tab enabled?! That is strange are you sure you didn't flash to a custom rom?! I have that one my phone and I have the update but the only way I was able to get that was with CHT. I have attached examples.
Yep! I do have cookies home tab installed! Dang..so is the setting in that to change it? :bangs head:
I'll take a look.
WTHAT A MORON. Thats its. The 'retractable slider' setting. I can't believe I didn't realize that was cookie and not HTC.
Thanks a million for pushing me in the right direction.
Awesome! Glad I could help! I had that enable for a while but it became a little annoying so I took it off! Hahahaha it does make it look really cool!
Hey, thanks for the info. I'm glad I learned about that.
I also have Cookies, and didn't know about that.
Now I have just enabled that feature. Why? I don't find that "ribbon" at the bottom very useful, as it is not very customizable. Nice to have the settings button there at the right, but one can also do that with a Quick Link. I like the music app, but one can also do a quick link for that. Withouth that ribbon, there is room for another row of quick links. (I find it unfortunate that that "ribbon" is so uncustomizable. You cannot choose what is in it, but only what to remove (other than settings and home). (I don't really need that home icon either, because there is a hardware button for home.) I don't like how that "People" tab goes to "HTC People". I'd rather go straight to the regular contacts list. But it can't be changed (AFAIK), only removed.
So by retracting it, I remove the whole thing (can slide it back if I want), but can put the links I like in that ribbon into quick links, for which there is now more room.
Thank you.

[Q] tabs in stock browser

Hi TF fans,
The question is what happened to the tabs in the stock browser? I have updated to 3.1 and I'm using the quick access buttons. but I can't see the tabs as they were before? At the top of the browser screen?
Where can I find help about the new layout and buttons from the quick access menu?
Any ideas,
rio
Yes you loose the tabs when choosing quick access.
IIRC it was the same way with 3.0.1

No, I've been using quick access since i got my TF on UK release day. Always had both visible tabs and QA.
Rio
Oh OK, it's been a while since I was on the older firmware so I don't remember.
Might nandroid back just to see.
You still have the ability to open new tabs with the quick access tab and now in the quick access tab you can scroll thru all the open tabs you have.
Cool option but takes a little getting used to work.

In the Browser, go to Settings, Labs, and enable Quick Controls. It lets you swipe your finger in from the bezel to access a "quick" menu.
I remember specifically the reason I didn't use the quick controls when I first got my TF (back on 3.0.1) was because it hid the tabs and URL bars. I have a US TF though, maybe that's where the difference lies!

Yes I went back to the old firmware and the tabs are there but the
new 3.1 there are options to switch tabs, add tab, ect. in the Quick access.
Yeah to confirm, with quick controls on 3.0.1, if you had 2+ tabs you'd see the tab bar. However with just 1 page you'd see no tab bar until you opened a new tab. I too preferred the old way as you could see everything you had open...
I had the same "problem" (and actually posted here about it) until I got used to it. Now, I barely notice it as I am fairly proficient with the quick access side swipe.

how do you close a tab when using the quick controls? i can see & switch to which ever one I want, i believe i can even open a new one, but i don't see how to close one short of turning the quick controls off and closing the tab at the top.

[Q] Anyone else loving Quick Controls?

Honeycomb 3.1 brought us a lot of minor tweaks and fixes, but I'm finding the new Quick Controls in the stock browser really addictive! Holding the tablet in landscape view, it's just soooo easy to slide in my right (or left) thumb and navigate backward, forward, to favorites, or refresh the page. Almost effortless - as if I needed to expend even less energy in the recliner browsing the web
Regardless of the little annoyances (like that infamous keyboard lag in some form boxes), I'm sticking with the stock browser for that feature alone.

Quick controls rock. I love that feature.
The only thing I miss is there doesn't seem to be a way to close/kill a tab if you enable quick controls.
Anyone know how to do this ?
i dont really like it because everytime i go to scroll i always end up poping that thing up instead from the side, u also cant use the slide bar with it which sucks. but each there own its just my own opinion

I just use Quick Controls to open that tab (if it's not already) and then the 'X' to close it ... two thumb clicks

Doh! I hadn't realised that those keys were + for new tab and x to close tab.
I assumed they were for zoom or something.
Good call
Yeah, I've been using the quick controls, they're great except the tab switching could be better.
I like quick controls when using the device in tablet mode, but it makes it impossible to use the browser when docked using the track pad and keyboard.

Love it from day one with 3.0 now could they fix the lag!

It's not impossible. Just click and hold within a few pixels of the screen edge (either side) then use another finger on the touchpad to navigate around the quick control arc.
Would be cool if the browser would swap back to normal when docked
Always used them with 3.0, loved it. Hate it in 3.1, mainly the way tabs are done. I wish it was like 3.0 quick controls

Agreed. 3.0 implementation was much better. Tab management stinks in 3.1 because it's an extra step to switch to a tab and then close it. It also isn't easy to differentiate between tabs as you move your finger up and down the little windows.

Implementing the browser circle control into a rom

I think it would be bada** if someone implemented the browser circle control (the one where you drag your thumb or finger in from the edge) into a rom, for use throughout the whole system. Granted, it might only be useful for the back, menu, and home buttons, but am i the only one that thinks this would be awesome? instead of having to reach over and hit back every time, you could just slide your thumb in..I know that sounds incredibly lazy, but oh well..i still think it would be cool....i would use that rom just for this feature...Is it possible?
It can be done by loading a module, but someone need to code it.

Wave launcher?
no wave launcher allows you to put certain apps in it like the palm pre. i'm looking to have that circle of controls in the browser be universal...for instance, when i am on the xda app, i keep sliding my thumb in to go back, but its not there...
I bought my transformer today after seeing this 'circle' functionality in a review, but can'tfind it?
You have to enable it in the browser settings.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Since I had no idea what it was I went looking and I just found it.
In the browser go to settings then to labs then turn on quick controls.
I am assuming this is it. I turned it back off instantly but maybe you will like it better than me.

[Q] Dolphin HD Browser on A500 Help Needed

I am trying to remove the 'exit' prompt when hitting the back key. The FAQ at their website says go to Menu/More/Settings to turn off the prompt. Problem is that I can't find Menu/More/Settings. Where is it?
Hit the system menu button at the bottom left of the screen. Go into settings (you might not have to hit "More"), change settings.
Entropy,
Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry for being so slow but I do not see any menu button at the bottom left of the screen. When I bring up the Dolphin browser I have a left arrow for back, a up arrow that brings up the tablet home page, a layered rectangle that brings up a graphical column that has My Apps, Team Stream, Gmail, Google Search, and Settings.
If I hit Settings I do not get a "More". The last icon at the lower left, a rectangle grid brings up the a bottom six options; refresh, bookmarks, toolbar, forward, exit, and uh-oh "more". Oops! There it is. Found exit settings and fixed the problem. Thank you very much.
lmao!
Glad you got it! Totally got a chuckle out of that stream of consciousness style there lol

Hey Gmfeny, did you get you random wifi disconnects sorted... I read that you used the wifi analyzer (where did you find that..?) and then at your womans pad, it started working. What is the latest. Later on.
