[Q] GPS navigational apps on Android - Eee Pad Transformer General

Can anyone shed some light on any existing or soon in development apps for utilizing the onboard GPS in the TF/Honeycomb?
In particular apps from companies such as Garmin, Tomtom, Navigon or even IGO where the maps are stored on the device itself using the GPS chip for nav. Coming from apple IOS I am familiar with their apps but I cannot find any seemingly stable counterparts in the marketplace.
Not looking to shell out $50 to $100 plus on something that was meant for a phone . . .

coPilot has been out for years.

google map for me, although you would need to cache your map first (do it by setting the destination first when you are connected to internet) but that's another option for you

Are there any apps to cache a preset area/zoom level of google maps? Not that I have an issue using my phone as an AP...

I'm pretty satisfied with Google Maps / Navigation. I just wish Asus would fix the mic to add voice search capabilities.

There is also aura made by sygic which is pretty good... (not sure if there is an honeycomb version though...)
Damn, can't wait to get my transformer so i can stop stalking this forum and actually play with this thing! :O

For Map-on-SDcard solution, everyone seems to be happy with coPilot(also cheapest in the market I think). Navigon is also available in the market, and Igo has an Android version but seems to be OEM distributed only.

aura's bottom menu buttons don't play nice with honeycomb, the status bar obscures the bottom section of the screen. Copilot works prefectly though

i'm confused by what CoPilot is saying? about awaiting a verficatoin number for unlimited use???? is there a monthly fee or something with CoPilot?

The only number that was required when I installed was the google checkout number.
Have you put that in yet?

I just bought co-pilot today. It asked for my 15 digit Google Order number which I did NOT enter because the order number in my email had like 50 digits so I just hit next and it said "registered."
Looks kind of "blown up" on the TF ,,,,, I think they need a higher res tablet edition. Officially they don't support it either on this device or on Honeycomb.

You should receive a very long number key from Copilot after purchase. They ware not real fast sending it out so it could take several days. Once you have it, you can go to the register screen and enter it. Keep it in a safe place as you will need it if you change devices or get something new.

The google number is 15 digits long...that's the number you need.
If you got one that's ALOT longer...then you need to email them and give them that number to get it straightened out and they will send you the proper check out number.
then you input the number that they gave you and you're good to go

New Version of Google Maps 2.2.0.16

It seems that Google maps is working with WiFi again. They also changed their icon pic.
Thanks for the heads up! But the icon looks the same =/
icon
The icon changed, and you no longer get the My Location yellow window popup.
Honestly, it also seems to load locations faster.
Yes, it seems to play nicer with the 6800. There is also a little arrow that point the direction your heading!!! I like that feature!

Okay a softreset changed the icon. God I love Google Maps, the interface is so much easier to navigate compared to Live Search. If only GMs supported voice to tell it what you're looking for, in due time hopefully...

That is interesting.
I find just the opposite, and after trying the use Google for a while I always get frustrated and go back to Live Search.
Each to his/her own =). Yeah I'm really happy that they added the arrow showing the direction you're traveling in, it makes things so much easier. Now if only they had a walking route option like how the website now has. (Basically it ignores 1 way streets) as I use GM for walking around when I'm in Manhattan and don't usually drive there.
Walking directions
I also would like to have the option of walking directions, much needed in NYC
I actually like more Live Search but good update from google. Any software out there that has walking directions?
Looks like it needs some work.
It still does not show my contacts that have an address, but no phone number.
When you select a contact, you have to select which phone number or email address you want to use. If you select a home phone, you STILL must select a home versus work address.
No gas prices or movie lookup. No white pages search.
It does draw the screen quick.

Just select the transit tab and request directions there. Since there is no transit info for NYC or Philadelphia (where I tested it since I live in Philly) it will revert to giving you walking directions.
Mine won't install
My Google Maps update won't install. When I click the text-messaged link, Opera 9.5 takes me to the Google maps install now page. I click Install Now, and I get this error message, titled gmm.jad:
There is no application associated with "gmm". Run the application first, then open this file from within the application.
Nonsense: I have 2.1.0.10 on my XV6800's built-in RAM.
How, exactly, would I open the Google Maps updater from within Google Maps?

Try to update using PIE
sweet
I hadn't tried using the newest version until this weekend.
The interface is significantly changed, making things a lot easier to use. Going from text directions to satellite takes just a quick click of the screen.
The other thing I love, though should have been an obvious inclusion, is the arrow that points in the direction your moving.
They've also implemented, essentially a next step button that explains what you have to do next on your trip.
Great stuff
Help please
OK, so here's the deal...
I had the previous version of GMs installed, 2.0.1.18, and I am attemping to update to this version.
First, I tried to uninstall the older version thru Settings > Remove Programs.
Gives me the "are you sure..." message, I click Yes
Then it says, "Google Maps was not completely removed. Do you want to remove it from the list of installed programs?"
I click Yes (which prolly doesn't do anything bc it doesnt actually remove it) and soft reset.
When it comes back up, I try to install the new version:
I double click the new cab, googlemaps_compressed.cab
states "the previous version of Google Maps will be removed before the new one is installed. Select OK to continue or Cancel to quit", I click OK.
Then I get "The previous version of Google Maps cannot be removed. Do you want to continue installing Google Maps?" I click Yes.
It finishes the rest of the install, then states "installation of googlemaps_compressed.cab was unsuccessful". I soft reset.
I reopen google maps from my program launcher, I get the "accept/decline" message. I hit Accept. the version I am on is still the 2.0.1.18. But I think it is jacked up because now I cannot center on GPS. This function works fine in MS Live Search.
Sooooo is there a means to actually remove every trace of google maps on my phone, registry and all? I assume if there is a way to do this, then I would be able to get the new version installed. Essentially, how so I completely remove this (and really any app bc I have had this happen before) from my phone.
VZW xv6800 running dcd rom 3.2.5 / radio 3.42.50
Thanks for the help, this is bugging the #@#%^@! outta me.

Which sat-nav software works with Nexus One

Hi all.
Finally got my e-mail saying my Nexus One is on its way, yipeee..
Does googlemaps turn by turn software work here?, or even the android co-pilot 8?
What are you xda members using?
Thanks in advance everyone.
google maps navigation works, dont know about the others.
Really? Are you sure?
Mine just gives directions and draws the route on the map.
Yes, of course it does turn by turn.

yes, and it has Text to Speech, meaning it will speak street names. It also has live traffic and such.
You should probably know you need a data plan for this, because google maps are loaded on-the-fly and are not stored on memory (except your most recent places which are cached)

Google Navigation only works if you're in the US. If the device detects you're anywhere else it will only bring up the standard maps app, so you need a 3rd party one (unless someone hacks it, assuming it's hackable given that it requires data off the net to work.. if google don't have navigation data for timbuktu it won't work there whatever you do..).
Awesome..

I was worried about having the N1 and no sat-nav software for a couple of months...
Is yours a US or International N1? and does it have pinch zoom?
im in US. no pinch zoom because multitouch is disabled in the US.
I didn't think I was imagining the lack of a full navigator in google maps (I'm UK based)
I have co-pilot for when I'm roaming outside of the US.
Works fine.
Anyone using TomTom Australia on Nexus one? If so, how feature rich is this version of TomTom?
- Is it using Sensis map?
- Does it provide overspeeding audio-warning for ALL roads, or at least 99.9% of the roads?
- Does it audio- warn you when approaching speed cameras and red light?
- Does it audio-warn you when approaching schools, or at least POI selected.
Info please..

That was me, and I still can't activate copilot on my hero. The problem might be that I have an extra maps license (US+EU installed). I'll post updates if I get anything out of copilot support...
PS: I of course installed the newest version from the market.
I went from G1 to N1 no problem.

Actually, international GMaps turn-by-turn hack has been out for quite some time. It just tricks Google into thinking you're just getting directions drawn on the map, then translates that into navigation data. Works perfectly, except the bar at the top that shows your next turn is blank. So, Google doesn't have nav data for timbuktu, but you can get direction data for it, and that's good enough for the hack to translate to nav data. Gotta love XDA, don't you?
By the way, I don't know if the hacked Maps for international nav has been ported to the N1 yet or not, but it is relatively simple. I'll talk to someone and see if we can't get it working soon.

Installing Copilot v8.0.0.327

Ok.
So i got it installed using a program from Market using AppsInstaller.
Its now installed on the device, when i boot it up it gets a error and closes.
Saying
"Invalid Library
CoPilots code cannot be loaded by the system"
Anyone got any ideas how to fix this at all?
Thanks
Just download the current version from the market It has been altered to be compatible with Nexus One.

coPilot 8.0.0.327 is not compatible with Android 2.1, you have to install coPilot 8.0.0.571
Mod edit - Request for warez removed. You could be banned if you continue this behaviour
Y'know, its a really good piece of software that does its job at a very reasonable price. Also, you can try it out for 10 days first.

Yes, to several devices. I would use your google checkout email that you recieved from ALK - You need to send them your new IMEI and they have always sent me a new activation

Their support e-mail form is borked; it keeps telling my recaptcha responses are bogus .. and they clearly aren't. At least, most of them aren't.
Do you have a support e-mail address that works? I've tried [email protected]. I don't see anything published on their website.

My experience matches yours. Downloaded the app on my N1, entered my order number and that was it. No need to contact Alk at all.
You dont really need to contact them unless you subscribe to live traffic or anything "extra" subscription"
Another way around if you subscribe to live traffic, is grab your data folder for ALK.copilot from your old phone or backup copy, that you should have..
Install copilot on your new phone/rom, prior, before starting up copiolt. Copy the data folder into the new data folder it creates.
As i said before this is only for live traffic.

How did you download it via the market place without buying it? I could only see versions you had to buy to download?
When you buy from the market, you get an email from google checkout/ALK services which has a link to contact the "seller" about the purchase - I've always used that to tell them of new IMEI
Now, when I first changed my device (G1 to Ion) I thought i'd be OK just redownloading onto new device, since all the maps and copilot folder was still on my SD card cos I swapped it from my G1. However, after an update, it stopped working and kept saying it needed an activation code. after a few emails to support, finally figured it was the change of device, and the activations are linked to IMEI - just sent my Ion IMEI and all was good again.
What happens is that the purchase info clears you to install on a new device, but the LICENSE info is still linked to the previous IMEI. It usually works fine for a week or so (Probably a 10 day grace) then has problems. My advice is to let them know your IMEI is "incorrect" and send them the correct one. They usually (In my experience) reply quicker when your enquiry is via google checkout link - and have replied within 24 hrs to my requests. Reply often advises you to start again and redownload maps etc but i've never needed to do that.
I have now been able to use copilot on my G1, Ion, Hero, Milestone, and nexus without having to repay - the price of this software is excellent for what you get - don't stiff the company by illegally installing, people. ALK are doing a good job

Does anyone use Sygic on the Desire ??

Hello all,

I know you no longer have Sygic but I think I may have found the cause of the problem. I had Sygic on my HD2 so it was free to transfer it to my Desire but I also had no voices. I'm surprised TomTom haven't introduced this 3D Landmark, etc to their mobile products (or any other?). In fact the design hasn't changed in ages!
I've got both the Sygic and Co-Pilot products running on my Android. Not had a chance to properly test them out. Co-Pilot seems a bit more 'polished' appearance wise.
Had a response from Sygic today
Thank you for your e-mail. I would like to inform you that application Aura will be available also on Android device. In this moment I can't give your exact date, but it should be available during upcoming couple of weeks. Thank you for understanding!
Hope 'couple of weeks' isn't a typo. Unfortunately, in a later email they said they did not think there would be an upgrade path from Mobile Maps.
I tried to rentall Sygic to my Desire tonight but it cmae up with the error that it was already registered on another device. REALLY ??

UK users: Google Maps Navigation working?

Just seen this thread over in the Desire section - looks like Navigation is working in the UK now without needing to hack maps etc!
Quick test shows it appears to be working fine, haven't been out anywhere but it's giving locations, step by step directions etc!
Anyone else confirmed?
Holy cr*p it does seem to be doesn't it?
I'm stuck in work at the moment, but the navigation option has appeared and I can get it to launch. May have to go for a drive at lunch just to test it
Can anyone confirm it is working? I would LOVE to ditch Co-pilot.
I really hope it isn't an error on Google's part, which they are shortly going to correct and take it away again!?
Yeah, the option has appeared, I cant get a GPS signal tho as im stuck inside at work too.
Awesome update
It is working on my unrooted nexus one. It warns it is BETA version but who cares as Google always beta anyway. Version 4.1.1(#4156)
I did not even realise from the last update they had enabled it. No mention of it

Working for me . Running CM 5.0.5.3.
I tried via Google Maps first of all and the option wasnt there, so I installed Nav Launcher from the market and that seems to generate directions.

Seems like alot of countries got maps navigation, however Denmark is not one of them.
Thank you for the link.

Cheers!

PS But thanks again to Brut for his hack that made it work on the old version of Google Maps..)
can confirm its working here too.
In UK with latest Cyanogen on N1.
Been using CoPilot so far which has been ok, but id like to see how google's fair.
This is very cool and it has been released by google quicker than I thought it would have been. I haven't used it for a long journey but compared to the hacked version it seems to tell you the instructions before the junction rather than after so good work google. This is some nice proof that google is working hard to improve nexus one. One other note is my version says htc passion and nexus one and it also has my locale as eng (uk).
Awesome, that's [brut] Maps and Nav Launcher gone from my phone.
Great work, Google!
Yup, working on mine too.
The voice search is superb, just tap the voice search button on the Google search bar, then say "Navigate to" followed by the destination...
Yay. That's the tomtom in the dustbin as soon as my car mount arrives.
Navigation looks really good.. street names too, which was a surprise.
if i try and use the google maps application i get force close every time it searches for directions it works if i use nav launcher though...anyone got any ideas?
im using latest cm with nextheme and avs kernel...
thanks
