Gingerbread upgrade more likely.. - Atrix 4G General

now that motorola is releasing the Droid x2?
Both phones have the tegra 2 chip and motoblur but the droid x2 is releasing with gingerbread out of the box. If motorola has developed GB for this release, maybe a GB update for the Atrix isn't far behind.
Just trying to keep my hopes up.

I would tend to agree. Is it launching with 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?

What the hell Motorola?! Why would you release a device with 2.2.2 when ICS is right around the corner?

I think you just answered your own question right there. Why invest more in QA and further development in "skinning" and slowing down 2.3 with Motoblur, if ICS is truly coming soon. However, it's Motorola and we all know their stance on customers' demands.

They have done a nice job in customer response for the atrix

The latest from the official Moto forums gives some hope for a timely GB release:
juniorsgv: i like the refer to link by forum manager. (later this year for 2.3), quarter 4, ice cream supposed to be released. so basically we will be behind everyone else. terrible for first android device they touted to be most powerful and dual core. i won't be buying motorola in the future after this one.
Mark (Forums Manager): You're probably referring to previous posts that included a link here. I think you're pessimistically looking at the "later this year". Soon as we get closer to the release date I anticipate we'll put up better information on our Android Upgrade News page as well.

I hope Mark means it. I'm dying for some GB or ICS action!

Well... he does seem to usually try to keep everyone informed in more of a *hint hint* way, and less of a "you're fired" way.... so i think it'd probably be a good bet that he means it. I mean, he did try to inform us as much as he could about the HSUPA update coming without flat out saying it.

POLL: Gingerbread Speculation

This is my first Motorola phone and I actually hopped to ATT for the Atrix and so far, I really dont have anything bad to say.
Now that my intro is done... anyone have any insight when MOTO/ATT will push Gingerbread to the Atrix?
I'm hoping summer... what does everyone else think?
edit: when I poll for winter, its winter at the end of this year, not right now....
So far we're speculating for fall...
Hopefully with the attention that MOTO has with the Atrix and the Xoom, maybe they'll hire some extra engineers to push something by summer...
look at Milestone, they still on 2.1.
so I guess we won't get 2.3 until 2012
I really hope they upgrade directly to Ice Cream in winter, skipping Gingerbread. Ah well, hope springs eternal, as they say...
Crap in one hand and wait on gingerbread in the other, see which one gets full first.
It is bs the phone should not have been released without gingerbread.
They are already developing ginger bread. Look in dev forum. Someone had a dev dump if ginger bread at some point

gingerbread is pointless.
ice cream is what we need. I rather have them skip gingerbread and work straight onto ice cream.

Actually Motorola are known to update their flagship phones. The milestone never for updated because it was not one. The Droid x was released with 2.1, updates to 2.2 and will be getting 2.3 soon.

Since the Atrix is a flagship dual-core, I think we'lll see it sooner rather than later. Especially since we have a Gingerbread dump in the dev forum already... that's some nice signs for a spring/summer update.
Its really interesting seeing the wide range of dates when people think we'll get it.
I would really like to see the update soon, but it doesn't look likely. It is more likely I will end up with the Galaxy S2 / iphone 5 or some new HTC phone before we see an update.

Lets make sure atrix gets ice cream sandwich we do have the power

http://www.facebook.com/motorola?sk=wall&filter=1 click the link people like it and comment on it.
I have seen first hand proof of this working. I had an evo 3d. Htc decided all futre devices would have locked bootliaders well that made alot of people angry. Someone posted a thread on xda suggesting we let htc know that is not gna fly. So it turnd out thousands of people got on there facebook wall and twitter. Guess what the next day htc released a statement saying that they wanted too keep there coustamers happy and that the bootloader would be unlocked. They were. Id like to be able too have a device and not have too get a new one juzt because moto or htc or sammy wants too put them out constantly get people too buy them and then ditch them and out out another. The atrix is 100 percent capable of runing ics and theres no excuae for it l not too recieve it just because moto wants people too buy new devices every couple months. I know many many people feel the same way well as i said we have the power too change that if people would stop bickering and take it seriously. And also if moto started supporting devices longer not just bug fixes but the new android flavors. Id definately make my next device a moto it would do nothing but benefit them
try and get as many people as you can too do the same. It will make a difference.
I'd wait until ICS is released. As things stand today, Atrix has the latest Android version available.

The Atrix is really close to being officially supported by CM. Once ICS is released and the CM team makes their latest version (will be CM9) it will have ICS and will work with with the Atrix.

They got tons of flak for promising gingerbread for the Motorola Milestone (gsm version of OG Droid) and then saying nevermind. Mind you, this was merely 1 year after the milestone came out as well. Gingerbread for the Atrix was inevitable. Not giving the Atrix gingerbread would be a PR disaster. What people fail to realise about a CM port of ICS to the Atrix is that if Moto decides to EOL the Atrix after only a year with no ICS upgrade, you lose out on updated drivers, kernel, and baseband. Sure we'd have ICS, but it won't run as well as a phone that natively has ICS.

Ice Cream Sandwich for Atrix - Motorola Official

Alright, so many of you know that Motorola announced that it would in fact bring a software update for Ice Cream Sandwich to the Atrix. I emailed Motorola a few days ago and asked them when the update would come out.
This was the answer I received to my ETA question:
"The Ice Cream Sandwich(Android 4.0) Software Upgrade rollout for the AT&T Motorola ATRIX begins on the third quarter of 2012."
I guess that would mean we get ICS (officially) sometime this summer?
See this link for more details: https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c

But, I'm glad Motorola is going to release ICS for the Atrix. I figured since they were focused on newer devices, they wouldn't bother anymore. Even the Atrix 2 is out now.
I don´t really care where it´s from as long as i get ICS on my atrix. It still has a lot to give.
Thru use of deductive reasoning (lol )
One of the main speculations in the past as to why ICS wouldn't come to the Atrix was because of the webtop, and having to code a new webtop to work with the Motorola Code?
Since Canonical is openly advertising Ubuntu for Android, and the important line that its 'laptop environment' isn’t dependant or intrusive to the OS loaded to the phone. Maybe Moto is simply giving us ICS for the phone, with the Canonical software loaded. thus abandoning its proprietary 'webdock' for something that can be used across its entire lineup?
Thoughts?

That would be amazing... A bit hard to believe considering Moto's past, but still worth dreaming about.
yes
that is amezing i am really waiting for it thanks man for telling me this
Since Moto is heavily marketing the new RAZR with a very similar lapdock, I am fairly certain they worked out the issue with webtop and decided to throw us dinosaur-riders a bone.
However, the truth is - once I saw video of the new Asus padfone I was ruined. As soon as they are reasonable my Atrix and all its docks and accessories will be up for sale with no regrets.

Motorola: If ICS won't make our device better, we won't update to it

From Motorola's official blog
Code:
You’re not alone. Good thing we’ve got a page for that. You can get the latest software upgrade news on our refreshed page.
You may be wondering why all devices aren’t being upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Here’s the deal. We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done—well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.
Happy upgrading!

Hey man, 10x for the info.
Just one thing to Motorola: who gives a flying fu#$ what your crappy developers do with ICS??? Just release the stin%^g code and drivers for the Atrix and the great devs here will do so much better then whatever you could dream!
Anyhow I (and I guess that a lot of other users) am not going to install Moto's update, and will wait for the official CM9, and the only thing I'm waiting is the driver for the camcorder and a better kernel source.

Well the deal for them is that XDA Developpers is actually some kind of post-sale support for most of their products... And yes, they could release the drivers so the developpers can make better ROMs, I'm currently waiting for an update to install a custom Blur ICS ROM that could support my Lapdock, I'm not as angry as you but I only own the phone since 2 months, and it saved me from Windows Mobile's nightmare, also I'm waiting for a TRUE GPU driver for ICS (Some 2D apps just don't work). If any other company said that, it would be valid. But lets ignore Motorola's track record for a second. Why the hell arent the Droid 3 and Droid X2 on that list? They're both effectively the same phone as the Atrix but with 512mb of ram. Even the cut ram should be enough to run considering the Nexus S and One V run it pretty well.

Probably the same reason the the Bravo is only 2.2.1 and the Defy is 2.2.2 and Defy+ is 2.3.6. Oh and they both have 512mb of ram, same processor, and the biggest difference between the three is the camera module. Should I mention that the Droid2, DroidX, Cliq2, Milestone2, Bravo, Defy, and Defy+ are all almost the same phones with different camera modules, different radios, minor differences, and some happen to have a hw keyboard? They can all boot each others custom roms with some tweaking.
Its so we'll buy newer, better phones with updated systems.
And it is enough ram. My Bravo runs CM9 pretty damn smooth with almost no issues other than some flash problems. Damn locked bootloaders.
I'm putting the blame on MotoBlur. If the Nexus S can handle ICS, then the Atrix most certainly can...

Droid RAZR to get Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich on June 12

It’s always a pleasure to be the bearer of good news, especially when it comes to sharing with people what we know about an impending arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich on their Android devices. But before we do, we just want to make sure you know that this hasn’t been fully confirmed yet by Verizon. With that in mind, owners of Motorola Droid RAZR may want to mark down June 12 on their calendar, as that’s the date that Verizon apparently will roll out the ICS update for the two Droids.
According to internal sources quoted by CNET, the OTA update to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich for both Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx will be pushed out on June 12. While there were plans to bring it out earlier, there was an issue with the server that was supposed to deliver the update — hopefully that’s been dealt with now.
The June 12 date certainly still falls in line with what Motorola has written on its website, where the ICS upgrade roll out for Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx is expected to start in Q2 2012. In this case, the end of the second quarter more like. As always, we’ll let you know once we have more details. Feel free to share with our readers if you have some information or heard otherwise about the ICS update for the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR Maxx.

Motorola said Q2 for the Droid RAZR. Q2 is almost at an end. If that's any indication of future performance, ICS for the Atrix may not come until closer to Q4.
Maybe this is great new for us. That update might have something usefull for our devs. Of course, not drivers, but maybe our very first Blur ICS Rom. plus Webtop 3.0 (Tablet ICS). Idk, maybe im too positive Lol.

I'm hoping we'll see the soak test at the end of July and OTA by August just like last year's Gingerbread update.

I still think late Q3/early Q4. IMO the carriers will be more to blame getting their bloat on there. Then again all it really takes is one carrier worldwide, and CM9 will truly be in full effect.

The European Atrix is not very likely going to get ICS - back in February they first marked it as coming in Q3 and then set it back to Evaluation & Planning.
So I wouldn´t be suprised if they cancel the Update for North America. See, the Atrix is 1.5 years old and although it still can be regarded as "High End", there are other, newer phones from Motorola in the pipeline. Call me glass-half-empty, I´m just realistic. Motorola, like any other company, has to make profit and shelling out money for an update for an outdated device (yes, it can be considered as such since there is already an Atrix 2) is just a service.
I still hope to see my Atrix rocking fully functional ICS, but I wouldn´t be suprised if it never happened.
Just my 2 cents

I hear what your saying, but I think the update is more of a public relations move. Our phone was only 8 months old when ics came out. There was lots of negative feedback towards moto for the response time about ics. If they dropped support on a flagship phone they would lose customers indefinitely.

This makes little sense.
If a customer sees that their device is "old" compared to others, and realizes that the issue is lack of support from Moto, the response will be to buy another brand of phone.
On the scale of things, it is not a big effort for Moto to release for other devices based on the same platform. I would imagine the true engineering effort is almost nothing, and the bottleneck is just getting it thorugh QA.
I would be very surprised to not see an AtrixG4 released in August.

They lost me already
I love my Atrix, and don't see any other device, for now, to replace to. However, I really doubt if I will buy another Moto device, with the only excepsion of a Moto-made Nexus. Moto's policy of locking the bootloaders, along with a very questionable updating history probably burned Moto's future for me, which is quite a shame since I really love their building quality and simple-and-non-cloned designs.
