If the file you downloaded is a .zip file then connect your device to your computer and mount the sd card.
Then place the .zip file into the root of the sd card. Disconnect the sd card from the computer. Restart in recovery mode then choose 'Install .zip from sd card'.. Find the .zip file and hit install..
Reboot the phone after installation has been completed.. and then test the file ;o)
Or use clockwork to install it...

Follow this Guide to the letter and you will be fine!

Thanks but isn't that the way to run it of the internal flash. I want to run it of the sd card so I can go back to the regular nook if I want to.

You need to run 7zip and unzip the file to a .img file. The dowload comes through as a .img.gz file. When you have that, write the file you extracted to your usd with win32diskimager or what ever burn program you like.
I am able to get as far as it is downloading it to the sd card. I can see the progress bar and as it is at 80% or 90% it says it can't read the image file. what gives?
What program are you using to copy the image to the sd card?
You may want to use win32diskimager or WinImage85 to copy image to SD card. You cannot simply copy files over to SD card.
Using any of these programs will reformat card in the process and copy image to SD card.
Make sure you're unzipping the installer and copying just single file from size agnostic installer. After the image is on SD card, go ahead and copy CM7 and Google Apps.
Insert SD card on NK and boot it, it will start installation automatically.
I tried using win32diskimager and winimage but neither can do it. With win32diskimager I can't even find the file and with winimage I can find it but when it is downloading it says it can't read the image file

With Win32diskimager ( What I use)--It will NOT see the file you need to burn to usd-Until you unzip the dowloaded file with 7zip. You MUST unzip the .img.gz file you download to get the extracted .img file for burning. Once you have it extracted to your desktop, click on the browse button in win32diskimager(the little folder next to the image line) and select the .img file. Select the drive you have your usd card mounted in (it will be a letter for your usb port), and click write.

It is an unpacking/unzipping program--read about and download here:

thank you times a billion. I finally thing I got it all ready. now, is there anything I should know before I try it. Stuff like problems tricks or tips.
copy google apps to SD card. The installer should go ahead and install CM7 and google apps.
on mine it worked perfectly. it's not guaranteed that it works every time, but it worked for me so may want to give it a try and it will save you some time.
btw, on my earlier post I named the same program 2x, I meant to say win32diskimager or WinImage85. sorry about that.
I used Unrevoked to root and reflash my FROYO and it was fine for about a year. Then the USB port started giving me problems and it became impossible to charge my phone. Sprint gave me a new Evo 4g with Gingerbread. I was able to use Revolutionary to get S-off but have had no success getting the superuser zip on my SD Card. I tried extracting it to my f: drive (not in any of folders) but when I boot to recovery and try to update from my sd card nothing happens. No Superuser!!
The only files or directories I can see on the sd card are these (Over the past few days I've seen other files on the SD card after doing factory resets/erase sd card but still couldn't find Superuser):
-Android >>>data
-Lost.Dir
-META-INF >>>com
-media >>>audio
-rosie_scroll
-rssreader >>>predawn
-system >>>app
>>>bin
Should superuser be in these files?
I suspect that the sd card might be the problem because this is the same card I had on my previous FROYO phone which I rooted. Is it possible that the
Here, go to this link on your phone.

Download that zip with the default browser application or opera. Then, make sure that the zip is in the default download folder named "download". Boot into recovery and flash the zip file located under the "download" folder. There is no need to extract the zip file at all.
So here is my situation...
I would like one flash one of the new ICS roms and have run into an annoying problem.
I created a directory on the SD card called "Root", and downloaded the rom and placed it in the directory. I then rebooted into Recovery and after selecting update from zip on SD card, the file can't be located.
The only file in the Root directory is the first ROM I flashed and gaaps.
I can't seem to locate those files from Es file manager though.. Thoughts??

From recovery your sd card is called SD CARD.
from within say file manager your sd card will be in mnt/external_sdcard.
Some sd cards has a issue being read by cwm recovery. Often formatting the card in a Android phone or with sd format app. if k downloaded the rom file from within windows . In android file manager long tap on the file and click properties . check to see if the file is names xxxx.zip.zip
if you have stock recovery . the file must be on the root of the external sd card NOT in a folder at all. But your message makes me think you have cwm installed . if you are sure none of the above is the issue. Try re download the rom of your choice and try again.
Good Luck

Erica is right. When you copy your file to EXT SD Card, you should copy it straight to the card. NOT put it in some folder. This will make it easy for your Recovery to find.
This is the basic method. Depending on which recovery you use (RA or CWM) there are other locations you can use as well (USB Drive, Internal memory) but best to get familiar with the basic method first.
This worked for me... Thanks.

Ok first off, I've rooted my Tmobile lg g2x phone so just wanted to throw that out there so you guys know I'm somewhat capable of this since these directions seem far less advanced than that of rooting a smartphone. This is what I exactly did so far so you know where i'm at.
1) I read this: http://quinxy.com/guides/how-to-pick-your-nook-color-operating-system-and-install-options/
After reading I've decided to go the SD card route and use gingerbread
2) I went here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
3) I downloaded this: http://crimea.edu/~green/nook/generi...rd-v1.3.img.gz
It had the option to save or open so i clicked save and saved to my sd card.
Next I see a zip folder so i right clicked the "extract files here" tab and extracted the files
4) As requested I dismounted the sd card from my computer and reinserted it.
5) I went here: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=encore
I downloaded the first one dated 7/8/12
Again it asked to open or save file so I saved to sd card.
Next I see a zip folder so again, i right clicked the "extract files here" tab and extracted the files.
While extracting, it says, "there is a similar file that already exists". I just clicked the replace all button instead of rename.
NOTE: I dowloaded and extracted to sd card, not desktop(i'm assuming this is the way to do it)
6) As requested, I dismounted SD card and inserted into the Nook Color and turn it on. It just boots normal as if I didn't do anything.
So what did I miss?
When you download the generic***.zip file... save it to your computer... extract the zip file... use win32diskimager (if you use windows) or dd (if you use *nix) to write the generic**.img file to your uSD
When you save the CM7 and gapps zip files... put them on the root partition (its named "boot") and do not extract them (the installer uses zip files)

Thanks for your help. I had to have winrar downloaded as well to show I
as a .zip file. It brought me to another problem while booting though. It was looking for an image file, but its good now. I just had to change the file name of the cm7 zip. Someone suggested putting "update-" in front of it and it worked.
