Hey there everyone!
I thought about getting the Xperia Arc but before actually deciding to do so I wanted to get clear knowledge on the performance in gaming, and maybe if there's any noticeable difference between that one and the Xperia Play, which I also thought about, but I'm not quite sure about deciding on the controller or the Bravia Engine and Exmor Sensor... both very nice to have actually.
Well, I already know that the Play is good for gaming, but how does the Arc fare? I heard it has a newer Qualcomm CPU in there, but are the 512 MB of RAM (or... what is available of it) any hindrance?
Maybe someone could try out some high(er)-end games?
There are lite versions of:
Raging Thunder 2
GUN BROS
Dungeon Defenders
Crazy Snowboard
on the Market to name a few examples... I'd be really curious as to how the framerates are on the device, perhaps also the emulation capabilites (gameboid and fpse)? Framerates or stutters or something of the sort?
Would be really great to hear some responses!
Regii
The Xperia play and Arc have the same CPU and RAM. so what i think is that they both have same horse power.
But it's up to you to make a decision are you gonna use it to play games or you wanna take pictures. OS is the same only the play got the interface to play PS games (or something like that)
I played gun bro's on nexus one that has a older version of CPU&GPU but it could handel it without problems.
here you can compare the two phones > http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3619&idPhone2=3608 you won't see that much difference.
Good luck choosing your phone
Quite right, thanks. My reference website didn't have the Scorpion listed as the Play's CPU.
Do you own one of these? Because even though they have the same horsepower, I don't know about performance in Dungeon Defenders or so, e.g.
The Playstation interface is unnecessary to me since I'd play emulators anyway, but the controller is quite attractive, even though I already got quite used to touchscreen controls on my G3 as well...

Thanks a lot If an Unreal Engine 3 game runs smooth, almost anything else will as well. And, as far as I heard, Play comes with Froyo and not Gingerbread, the Arc is the one with stock Gingerbread.
Think I'll actually go for the arc as the Bravia engine and the design are just tooo tempting! Thanks for the help!
Nice choice and i must say how great the games look on this big sharp screen. Love the screen

No problems viewing angle-wise? Heard some complaints about that. But I already saw the screen myself, a joy really, especially videos and photos.

Heck, then I really have nothing left to complain about! Well makes my decision all that much easier. Just will have to wait till a misty silver one arrives though, think midnight blue looks kinda cheap and is a magnet for fingerprints :/
here're some of the games I've tested.
Working:
- Asphalt 5
- Assassin's Creed
- Battle Bears
- Crusade of Destiny
- Dungeon Defenders FW Deluxe
- Dungeon Hunter
- GT Racing HD
- Hawx
- Oregon Trail
- Shrek Kart
- Spider-man
- Splinter Cell Conviction
- TurboFly 3D
- Zenonia 2
Not Working
- Asphalt 6 : force close during additional downloads/updates
- Samurai II - Vengence HD : not supported
Some HD games doesn't work. However lag do occur when my phone is syncing with the company exchange server. Expected though. Just make sure to disable internet or data transfer if u want to enjoy lag free mobile gaming.
cheers
Well perhaps we'll get Asphalt 6 to run somehow, and Samurai is not that interesting to me... what about fpse?
Well, what if you try to play dungeon defenders online?
Thanks for the info though!

How did you guys get dungeon defenders to work, mine crashes after the intro movie? Did you download over wifi or manually from the website?
i installed it from the market and then downloaded the ontent with wifi and it worked didn't crash. but what i noticed is that the game sometimes lagg but it's not because the cpu ors something it's because the ram it gets really low.

The game was developed with Unreal Engine 3, so no wonder there. Just wondering: what about the random reboots someone reported? Heard they had a connection to the game.
gun bros works a treat, looks great on the arcs screen, dungeon defenders works a treat too, how ever ive seen lag in older games, like this ninja game where u run up walls, it lags when you jump accross walls, also abduction2 lags at times when jumping
ive noticed that games like gun bros and dungeondefenders look really crisp and sharp... yet other games are a bit fuzzy, like they aint optimised for sharp screens
That's because 2D games like Ninjump only have a fixed resolution and can only upscale on high-res displays like the Arc's. 3D Games like DD or Gun Bros can always be rendered at a higher resolution.
Gotta say though that I experienced some lag in Dungeon Defenders with much going on on the screen.
hmmm.. i think if u r looking into gaming capabilities, i saw a very interesting article in the sony ericsson website stating that all xperia 2.3 android will be make psp certified which they claim that even without the keypad, the other android 2.3 xperia will still be able to play psp games with virtual keyboard

Still have the source? Because that sounds very interesting indeed. And I myself can't find anything about this.
Hi all, i got hold of splintercell conviction hd , sandstorm hd and modern combat 2 today but ive had problems with all 3 of them i was just wondering if anyone has them working on there xperia play?
it probably was the sources i got them from as ive heard there are different versions of the games about but i dont want to go and buy them if there gonna be no better from gameloft. so im just checking before i fork out.
anyone else had similar experience?
black screen on splintercell
grey and black graphics on sandstorm and fails to download modern combat 2?
i dont think its my hardware as most games are fine.
gimme your thoughts
my problem is slightly different. I bought sandstorm, nova, asphalt, sparta for my htc evo 4g. Trying to get other games it says gameloft cant support my phone. Which makes me wonder if some kind of divorce took place after I bought my games, and if I am in somekind of limbo right now
mikzfan
I bought a few games when I had the HTC desire hd and just installed those on the play and encountered similar problems. Wrote gameloft and got my paid games upgraded and they work like a charm. Dpads and touchpads incorporated in the games ;-)
Regards Dousan...
e: when upgrading games to the play I had to download some extra stuff to make it work. (Had already copied my backup from HTC dhd to my play).
ah right yep the games must be coded slightly differently for the play cos of the pad... ive got another version of conviction here now which is working but not with the pad grrrr ... im gonna have to spend some dosh and buy the right version
ALSO anyone know if the play is multitouch cos it doesnt feel like it. i know its gotta pad so it doesnt really matter but on sandstorm using the screen i had to stop moving to aim?

ONe thing i do know about, lol, the play has multi touch screen AND touch pad, if u try the touch pad test software u can use 2 fingers on the pad AND 2 on the screen at the same time
Just a quick update... i bought splintercell and modern combat 2 and both work great using the pad controls,... I found out i had to buy the games to get the right version for the xperia play just a tip for other noob freebie hunters
Only problem I've had with some games is them not showing up in the Xperia Play games section after download.

Hi There Ive had the same problem with modern combat 2 dont know about the other 2 it force closes when i select it from the app menu, but I have got a way to get it working. This is on xperia play, for the downloading try restarting your phone turning the wifi off and back on and stay next to your wireless so you know youll have a good connection.
You try to load it from the app menu first and it will force close then hold the recent apps button and select the game from there and it will load it does still sometimes randomly force close though.
Hope this helps
If all else fails contact gameloft they take a few weeks for fixes like these but they will offer you a free game or something for the inconvenience.
That is good of them, I bought a game off PSN for PSP which wouldn't work & when I contacted them they told me it was my fault because I have a Jap PSP and they wouldn't re fund or supply a replacement.
i had the same problem with games not showing up... have you shut down and restarted your phone since u got them... mine show up. i think after a restart of the phone, not sure give it a try but mine are on the xp slide out list

Maybe consoles are a bit different but they should have allowed you access to a copy that did work for you if you paid for it. Or maybe that was just Sony as they get a cut out of every psn sale.
Yeah your right that is normally their attitude i was actually surprised when they did it and they done it twice for me bought nova 2 didnt work so they gave me assasins creed and spiderman free, then i got impatient for an fps so i tried modern combat 2 and didnt work either they gave me brother in arms free for this one. To sum that up i got 3 free games for 2 faulty games I bought and nova 2 works now since their update still waiting for a fix for modern combat 2 though.
I feel like this has to be the dumbest question ever. I just picked up a Xperia Play to try out. I start up Asphalt 6 or Bandicoot and everything works except whatever these center discs are for. What is the trick to using them or do they have to be enabled somehow? Maybe they are broken.
I stick my thumbs on them and move all around and nothing happens.
Thanks!
They only work with games that use them
The Asphalt 6 game showed a picture of the controller and what the sticks were supposed to do, so I assumed that they worked with that game. Can you recommend a free game that they work with?
easiest way to find out how and if your touchpad works is with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045374
Hope it helps
Thanks! The sticks work great in that test app. Good to know that my phone isn't busted.
Yeah unfortunately Crash doesn't use the touch pads.
Download Dead Space, it's currently free for the Xperia Play, and utilises them very well.
indeed Asphalt 6 is quite a liar.. though why use touchpads in a racing game? you're better off racing with a D-Pad..
never have i used touchpads in any racing game...
Guys, i updated my Eee Pad TF101 last week.Everything was seeming good. But after i tried to open some games. Some of them doesn't work.İ did every updates from GPlay but it's same. And after when i tried to open my tablet,it shows asus logo and when it's loading it's buzzing and not opening. At my second try it gets open but it's just not nice.Today i tried to play Angry Birds Space.İ played at 6. level. After it's buzzed.İ closed it but it's not opening. What can i do about those problems.
The Games That İ Can't Play
Modern Combat 3 Cracked(not from market)
Gta 3 Tegra 2 Cracked(not from market)
Dead Space(it can play well but its not horizonal,it's vertical)
İ deleted all because of this. What can i do? Please help me.İ'm really angry to Google.
P.S:Sorry for bad English, but i'm twelve and not American. So it's good even for me
So everything you cant play properly is cracked and not even purchased? Might want to look into that
I would lean to that being your issue as you cant update those games to the latest version if they are cracked, so I would try getting the real versions of those games and see if you still have a problem......

No, i don't recommend getting not legal games or apps. But in my country(Turkey)we can't buy anything from GPlay, only free apps can downloadable.Tegra games are in GPlay too,so it's not possible to download. But i have lot Gameloft HD games on my tablet,i bought all of them. With legal ways...
And you mustn't be rude to people.Somethings can have a simple and clear explanation.İt's not your job to judge people
For Dead Space on ICS, you need v.1.1.38 and a live Internet connection for it to work. For GTA III, you need v.1.3.

Not sure if you are seeing something similar to me, but i am having problems with many games on my tf101 also. Not sure what you mean by buzzing but for me the screen will freeze them a moment later the app with crash experienced it with several games from different companies, including the new angry birds space. It appears to be triggered by high frame rate or complex graphics. I am running a stock (unrooted) device.
Other affected games: need for speed hot pursuit, shadowgun, riptide gp. All purchased from google play or amazon store.
Angry Birds Space v.1.0 has a problem on our ICS. Angry Birds Space v.1.0.1 does not. That's the one you want.
I should also have mentioned that I suspect playing GTA III v.1.3 causes sleep of death for me, though it does run properly while playing. I've had two sleep of deaths, and I think both were after opening GTA III. Once rebooted, the tablet runs fine again.
Shadowgun works.
So, any way I can get around the "your device isnt compatible" bull**** with gameloft games?
I bought a bunch a while ago (Asphalt 6 and Gangstar, for example) and cant play them on my TF >_>
Gangstar does actually start and download the data, but when the game is starting it just black screens

Whatever,i didn't tried a lot gameü, but i must have same problems at same games. For now best we can do is always keeping our games updated and waiting an other update from Google
Just wanted to so a big thanks for all the support/mods/tweaks everyone has provided for the Xperia Play in the 18 months in which I owned the device, Some very hard work put in so thank you!
The Play is now old, support is fading by the day and it's just too slow for most newer apps/games and feels dated and heavy so I decided to buy a new device and sell my Play.
I bought a second hand Galaxy S2 (which isn't even that new now), not looked back since, just wish I sold my Play ages ago now! i'm honestly amazed at what I have been missing out on by putting up with the Play for so long!
I now have a phone that doesn't lag, runs everything super fast, has jellybean and has tons of roms/kernals/support and good camera functions!!!! (touch to focus, face tracking, 360 panorama etc), and no more low storage and ram problems!! wish the Play had all this a year ago! that's the last time I EVER buy a Sony smartphone.......
Thanks everyone and to the developers/modders who made the Play that bit better! we had some good times! :good:

Sounds like you bought an Xperia Play for the wrong reason bro.
I moved from my Galaxy to my PLAY and will never look back, but then again I bought my PLAY specifically for gaming on the go, and the Galaxy couldnt fulfill that need!
As for ram and low space issues, rooted with link2sd sorts that all out a treat. 227 apps on phone and still 124mb internal space left and around 180mb free ram on stock rom!
Anyway mate, hope you enjoy the new phone. They are a great piece of kit and the screen is absolutely amazing. It was more vibrant than my missus' 4S!

Bascially, in a nuthshell Xperia PLAY is the phone for hardcore gamers like myself. We don't care how fast or slow it is we're just in it for the gamepad. Who agrees ? :good:
As an Android Smartphone..... It pretty much stinks constant calling, sms, work emails, personal emails would make my phone basicly stop and not work. I was ready to break it in half by 9am evey day but when I'd get a free sec. That would all change..... For me CTR and Super Mario World saved its life..... Now it rests in my bathroom where my Monthly issue of game informer used to sit..... And I could not be happier with it and will never sell it

it looks so beautiful that our beloved Xperia Play.
A shame you've made that decicion.
I for my part do not even change anything, for the simple fact of having a partner gamepad as said above.
For the only thing that would change would be for a future Xperia Play 2.
And If I were to characterize buy another smartphone. Concervaria my current Xplay.

This is exactly what I did. There is no better device, especially for emulators. The Android emulators run better and look better on 800x480 than even a PSP. The only device that might dethrone it could be the Vita at some point but that is really expensive right now and the hacking is more cumbersome and annoying than running apps on a phone. Emulators or games not designed for touch screen will never, ever be better on touch screen only phones. Even a lot of games designed for touch are better on the play because of an app like gamekeyboard which allows you to map touch controls to the Xperia Play buttons.

If your XPERIA is slow, try out my minimalist ROM. COLA ROM.
It will make your phone faster than a .223 bullet coming out of a Smith and Wesson AR-15
Anyways. I managed to score an Xperia play for 40$ this week off ebay (some sap didn't know the value of it)
It's really the best portable gaming device ever invented if you ask me.
Even the vita cant compete with it in specific aspects.
The xperia play is the dopest dope Ive ever smoked.
Too bad to see those kind of posts, well my play gave up on me for a month, burned my flex, had display issue... But... I so love my play, thats why I went to xperia center to get it fixed and ensured my play will have a 100% original parts. Now my play is back, running on stock kernel, ics by mark not overclocked yet running as smooth as it could. Only another play like device can replace my play. What im afraid of is when all good dev. Starts to move on more powerful devices. Anyway goodbye for you EX-Play user may you enjoy the new device that you have.
