Is the Z4Root method supposed to last more than 20 minutes? I ADB pushed the app to the phone and all normal. When I run Z4Root app and click on the Permanent root it, it just hangs there for a really long time. Is that normal? How long does it take to root the phone?
Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
sometimes when it gets stuck I have to reboot then try again & it works the 2nd time is pretty fast & its immediately after I've sbf'd

Pull the battery and try again. It will work quickly
After an SBF I don't even try to run z4root right after I install it anymore. I usually just install, reboot, and perm root and it takes like 10-15 seconds.
It took mine and a friend of mine a fair time to root as well but it will complete successfully if you just wait a bit.

didn't see this answered anywhere else.... how long does VISIONary take to root your device? mine's been sitting for 20 minutes with the pic up and the message "rooting device, please wait"
Download and install visionary and setup to root on boot. Make sure fastboot is disabled in settings/applications. Reboot the phone and it should only take 30 seconds or so.
Mines in the area of a minute or 2

Yeah, I had to restart the phone, then run it... took 15 seconds or so... thanks

Yes, if you don't perm root you'll have to use Visionary (or set it up to do it at boot) to temp root every time you reboot.

visionary is not intended as a perm rooter i think, its mostly for if u have a single task u need to do once and need a root access for that...
We have 2 phones here, got mine first.. used visionary+ to perm root my phone. I can temp root my other one, but for the life of me can't figure out why the 2nd one won't perma root. Is there more then one update? Both are running 2.2.1. Maybe its fastboot? Hang on.. i'll try
Answer, nope.. no difference. Perma root still fails.
I just bought my htc evo shift...I was wondering if the z4root will work on this phone I have it downloaded n tried to install once but got scared and pulled the battery...can anyone tell me if this would be safe..I'm not trying to make my phone a paper wieght any info would be appreciated..
It works and is safe for temporary root only. Permanent root has not been established yet.
Already discussed here:

Happened to me the first time I tried it to. Try again and I bet it works like a charm!
shift refusing to factory reset
So I'm in need of some assistance I installed z4root n decided to unroot n just stick to my factory settings...so I uninstalled all root apps and z4root n then I tried to do a factory reset n it just refuses to do it...I tried the holding the volume button down then power on it justs gets stuck at the screen which says htc. What do I need to do?
z4root destroyed my phone :'( it lags to hell now. I tried to reapply it as was suggested, but it doesn't show up on my applications list. I can't even reinstall it... it takes a long time to try and install it and then it says "Application not installed."
If you have the Superuser APK showing up go into Settings, Applications, and uninstall it. Then pull the battery or power down and restart.
That's what helped me.
It took a while but Z4 showed back up on mine and I was able to uninstall it. I'm using +Visionary now myself and it has been great, just have to uninstall Superuser everytime I power off.
I tried to use Z4 version 1.1 (the link downloaded that one) and it didnt work. It begun to do the root process and then it froze. I reset my phone and uninstalled it. Then I found out about the newer version 1.3 and tried that one and has worked flawlessly the 2 times I had to use it.
visionary+
Worked great, correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that z4root has been blocked with the evo shift. So after I messed up my 1st phone n replaced it n rooted with visionary+ n I like it..I. havnt tried the permaroot because I don't think its been worked out yet but if anyone has permarooted the evoshift let me know....I want to overclock my phone...so ill be waiting
For those of you breaking your phones with Z4root, you should definitely Run the RUU from Sprint in order to "unroot" and not just try to delete the items you installed in order to root in the first place. Download the proper HTC drivers or HTC Sync, download the RUU that can be found on the Android Development page on the Evo Shift Forums here at XDA, and Run the Ruu straight from your computer while having your phone plugged in and USB Debugging on OR you can do it from Recovery mode OR you can do it from Fastboot. Either way, as soon as you run the RUU, everything will be done for you and you won't have to do a thing but sit back and watch! Hope this helps.
z4root
Z4root is great and I don't blame it for my stupidy I messed woth some stuff I knew nothing about...
I think I will wait for something permanent do I don't potentially mess up my phone after all the hours I put in to set it up.
Sent from my HTC Evo Shift using XDA app.
My "uptime" so far is 169:17:40 and counting since I rooted my phone with Z4Root. I can't wait for perma root...
What's your uptime so far...?
z4root works fine for me as long as I run it immediately after reboot. Otherwise, it can hang, or reboot the phone into a weird state, etc.
I'm using visionary+ now...I heard that the permaroot they use for the htc desire will work on the shift since they are basiclly the same phone...z4root takes up 24mb n visionary takes up like 2.8mb of space so I decided to stick with visionary+

Oh n temporary root will not likely mess ur phone up since pretty much everything stays stock

Ok, so I ran sbf to get back to stock Froyo (2.3.340) so that I could prepare to load the rooted GB (596). The sbf ran fine. My problem is when I ran z4 (1.3.0) to root. It remains stuck on "Running exploit in order to obtain root access...".
I've pulled the battery. Un-installed z4 then re-installed, but it stays stuck at the same message. By "stuck" I mean over an hour. I even re-sbf'd. No luck.
I've run this version of z4 before and had no problems - usually only took around 5 minutes.
I've searched several forums, and most say to try the battery pull and/or re-install, but these don't seem to be working for me.
Any help would be appreciated.
DX - Currently 2.3.340
Try using gingerbreak instead of z4root. It is supposed to be able to root froyo as well
Thanks Jmoney,
I looked up alternate methods of rooting and came upon SuperOneClick. Seemed to do the trick. It can be found at shortfuse.org (can't post hyperlinks yet...) for any of those that may run into the same problem.
2 months ago I had to reinstall z4 5 times and reboot phone as many to get it to work. Installed on another x in 2 minutes. Do know why the difference, but never sbf'd to get it to work.

One of the popular links has a bad copy of Z4, I D/L'd it and it did the same thing (didn't realize that Z4 was bad).
So I redownloaded everything and it did it again, SBF'd and it did it again...so I finally went through my massive download folder, pulled a Z4 I had downloaded a couple of weeks prior and it worked fine.
Someone else also mentioned this - I think I got it from the "how to" .595 video link...but others have linked to it as well.
The z4 that I was using was from an apk that I downloaded a couple of months ago, and it worked then. Don't know why it didn't work this time.

For alot of phones, you hafta click 'temporary root' first then when that completes, hit 'permanent root' I have used z4 1.3 a few times and that's the only way to make it work.

I cannot get a temp root for my EVO Shift. Therefore, I cannot proceed with root.
I tried z4root. It reboot after I click temp root. It runs very slow and denied su.
Visionary is the same. Not able to get a temp root.
Anybody has an idea? It is the same before and after 2.3 OTA.
Ok this is what I used to do... Sometimes works sometimes doesnt , u need visionary.. perm root with shiftrr its really easy
What should happen...
Boot device
Click VISIONary icon
Phase 1 runs
Logo disappears briefly as app reloads
Phase 2 runs
App disappears and root is complete
That's what paul says the developer but this is how I got it to work... This might work I havnt done it in a while so ill try to remember
Ok...
1 turn on airplane mode (very important)
2 turn on 'root on boot' or whatever I don't really remember
3 press temp root (it should just reboot ur phone and go to the boot animation)
4 immediatly as ur phone starts up unlock and hold down power and turn off
5 turn ur phone back on
6 wait for it to boot up before unlocking (time is everything, its going to take a couple of trys probubly)
7 unlock ur device and visionary should be running... If the logo flashes on visionary its working just let it do its thing
Forum that helped me...

No I'm not using Tapatalk... I'm using the XDA Premium app, cause I got balls.
Did you take the OTA update, if so, I'm not sure anyone has rooted it yet....otherwise....
Why not perma root? I did this to my friends EVO Shift today in just a few minutes.

I'd recommend you watch this 8 min video if you're unsure how to proceed with it.

You ran the OTA update from the popup msg on your phone? If you did then you will have to wait til the devs how to root that update. Sorry

Yea, OP says he tried visionary, both before and after the 2.3 OTA update. Now that 2.3 is applied, there is no current root method or restore to 2.2 method available. Gonna have to wait until the exploit is found.
I flashed the PD15IMG.zip that comes with the tutorial on rooting the MT4G and turned on dub mode, turned off fastboot, turned on 3rd party apps, installed the VISIONary apk and ran it, no matter what I do (restart, different settings) it just sticks on "rooting device" forever and never actually does anything.
Any ideas?
Which version of visionary are you using? I remember that using either r11 or r14 would make a difference in it temp rooting successfully.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
r14, do you have a version you used successfully?
figured it out.
My F$%^ing firewall blocked a part of the file from downloading, so after I disabled and downloaded r14 again the filesize was bigger.
root works ftw...
Hang in there man...its a learning process. I was on here a couple months ago like a chicken with its head cut off. I thought I had bricked my phone & I was totally confused. But after the 1st one, I did my spare mt4g and it went much better. A few weeks later, I talked my wife into rooting hers, and I completed it in about 5 minutes. My point is, you will understand what you're doing and be able to accomplish it very quickly once you finish the 1st one....but take your time.
