No full Ubuntu for 1.83? - Atrix 4G General

Am I correct when I say that there is currently no script to get full Ubuntu for the webtop on 1.83?
I looked a the different posts in the dev forum but I didn't see one that supported 1.83.

It worked for me. Little tinkering required. Synaptic wasn't installed, icon, that is. Besides that, fine.

Did you use the instructions in the post "[MOD] Full Ubuntu on the Atrix (now fully automated: 4.1.26/4.1.52)"?
Also, how complicated were the tweaks?

Rather than those instructions, following the2dcour's instructions is probably going to work a bit better, although some tweaks are still needed. I'm working on getting an application version of it up and running, but it's a bit more complicated than I'd hoped (since I'm adding some additional features). Don't worry - the2dcour's already making fun of me.

Thanks for the info! I might give the2dcour's instructions a shot or wait for the money application you are working on.

Do not follow the2dcour's instructions if you have 1.83. It will break Webtop.
The2dcour says "This script is not intended for 1.83 and will not work on it since they changed the webtop around in the update. It will pretend to work okay until you notice certain things are broken."

So, no one has managed to get it working on 1.83 yet?

how about the internal free space on your new version sogarth?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

There are dependency issues with coreutils. I have not used anything before 1.83. So I can only comment on 1.83 but my understanding is that Webtop changes between 1.52 and 1.83 changed enough libraries to break the full ubuntu scripts.
You could work through the2dcour's instructions manually while working to resolve the dependency issues. I believe others are working on that.

Lol.. Thanks for the links.. But I have already searched and I have no clue what I'm looking at.. What does everyone use this for? With what I'm running did it install itself?
What can it so for my fascinate? I'm just asking for a summary in layman's terms.
Rocking dj05 and jt's voodoo 5
It would be in the DJ05 ROM that you installed most likely. If not, Titanium backup uses it. Busybox is a set of basic UNIX/Linux command-line tools, and some of them can help you get out of a jam via adb as well.
Busybox is installed as part of every root method I'm aware of. As it's been stated, it contains many Linux commands that are not otherwise included in the Android OS, and which are needed for root access to work properly. If you block it, I'm guessing that some or perhaps all of the apps you try to use that require root access wont work properly. I don't, however, have a lot of experience with it, so I could be wrong on some of the details.

Here i will be posting all of the how to threads which are helpful to all users.
i will personally do all of the tutorials to make sure they work and i will also give support to best of my ability on all of the topics.
1. How to Root
2. Enable Exchange Active Sync

Needs some additional work though especially around how to configure for a specific type/brand of modem.
Thanks
FINALLY a AdHoc that works, many thanks for the file and the instructions. I tried some of the others several times with no luck.
pretty cool thanks for making it easy to find the good work the devs are doing.
Thanks for the how to's
First off, let me say thanks to all you developers and all the hard work you put in.
I am a complete noob to Android, rooting, and custom ROMS. I bought the A500 to travel with to complete simple paperwork, internet, emails, and watch movies while in the plane. I travel a lot so this makes it more compact than my laptop.
I have been following dc13's ROM thread and have to admit I am quite interested. It seems he has managed to greatly improve the battery life which is very nice for me.
My question, any chance to get an A500 Noob section for the stuff we noobs are new to? I have tried reading various threads and write ups from searches but even though itvseems like rooting shares some similar techniques, there is a bit of device specific steps also. I am interested in being able to do simple things like remove apps, try out ROM's, and even do backups. Today I downloaded apps; Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, and Busy Box because it seems those come up a lot. After reading the warnings for BusyBox I decided not to mess with it. I did try to run a simple ROM backup today on ROM Manager and got the !triangle.
I have rooted, using the directions on here. I guess it worked, but when I went into settings and tried to delete Social Jogger using the file manager app, it said I did not have permission.
So as you guys can see, it would be nice to find device specific support for us boneheads who want a bit more freedom, without needing to know all you Devs know.
Any help would be great. I am just not sure which steps to take in which orders and also which apps are required to do what I would like to do.
PS: any idea if these A5's are able to get Swype?
Sorry so long. Thanks again for any and all help guys!
Thanks for this thread ...
I am still unrooted due to the fact that we have no easy way to revert back to stock ( revert to stock for dummies ) ... and the locked bootloader.
this is due to Acer making too many different versions of Build# and Kernel # for various countries of the world ...etc
Why can't we just have 2 versions like the Asus TF do ?? 1 for US region and 1 for WW region... sheesh !!
Could you please add a link to an easy way to restore to stock ( once that becomes available ? )

You have to mount the file system as rw... If you are using EStrong File explorer for example, you have to give it ROOT access before it can write to your /system files. Go to the settings and scroll down to the root portion. enable that... then go to the folder where you have the file you want to delete... and... delete it...
BE CAREFUL DELETING THINGS FROM YOUR /SYSTEM/APP FOLDER AS THIS HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BRICK THE DEVICE... Good hunting! jejeje

[Q] beta tester - Desire Z rooter GUI

Background:
My Desire Z is a phone from work, so I guess it's not meant to be fiddled with, but having rooted the other Android devices I have, I was somewhat annoyed that there is nothing similar to the Super One Click for my device.
I have hence produced a front end, that basically does nothing more fancy that proving a GUI front end to existing procedures.
It has two buttons, one for downgrade and one for the rooting.
I use the description (and files) from Cyanomod and I would welcome feedback on the procedures:
Downgrade:
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Firmware_Downgrade_(Gingerbread)
Rooting:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting
Releases:
0.1 - Initial release - framework established, not fully working
0.2 - Second release - Downgrade works to the point where PC10IMG.zip is to be installed. Returns "CID incorrect!"
0.9 - Public beta - has been proven in battle by working on my phone. If DOES state that it failed rooting due to mismatching MD5 hashes, but they do match and it does work so this is still confusing. Very limited error handling, so you can easily fool it in a gazillion different ways.
Files available:
http://www.bergatrollet.se/root/ (will make something a bit fanizer that the plain dir ;-)
Here you find the distribution package, but also the full source code (Delphi XE2).
Please mind; the distribution package does NOT contain the pack of tools needed. Please feel free to suggest where I can place a 300MB package now that Kimble got bust and megaupload is no longer an option...
The following tools are needed/used:
busybox
embedwpthis.pl
flashgc
fre3vo
gfree
hboot-eng.img
misc_version
PC10IMG.zip
psneuter
recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-vision.img
root_psn
su
Superuser.apk
Thanks for the comments received so far - looking forward to you testing it, and for pressing "thanks" on the post
Sounds interesting. My phone is already rooted so I guess I can't really help out?
You want to automate the two processes - is that correctly understood? It would save a lot of lazy people a lot af reading, that's for sure
Lazy people should not mess with their phone in the first place. As mentioned, if the destination matters to you more than the journey then you should definitely not be here...
Regardless, this is a nice gesture...good luck!

I will provide the source for it (Delphi XE2) so anyone willing to take a look at that are also welcome to give me a hand.
Correct; automate the two processes of downgrading and of rooting. They are made into two buttons as not everyone would need the downgrade.
I am uploading the two zips to www.bergatrollet.se/root.
The distribution one is quite heavy (300 MB as it contains the old ROM) so I also uypload a version with only the exe file and a reference to the binaries needed.

Quite a few people rooted their phones using Single Click options, and not all of them are lamers.
Fiddling with ADB is IMHO not mandatory knowledge for benefiting from a rooted handset!
That would be awesome if you can do it. I rooted mine quite easily from froyo using scripts or what have you. Visionary for temp root and gfree to finish the job. Abd doesn't work well with this phone.

The only prerequisite is that you need ADB installed, but all the applications needed and packed in the distribution ZIP.
Do you need your env variables set?
-Nipqer
You mean like path? All the tools needed are in ./bin/ relative the exe file (regardless of where you put it), so the only part where I see a need is if the adb needs something of the usb drivers...

+1 on this project.

Working on it ...
To keep you updated on the progress:
Downgrader:
- There are differences between the Cyanogenmod downgrader guide and the XDA guide. The XDA one features a gold card thing which seemingly isn't necessary. (Can't anyone explain this in a human language?)
- It fails in the part where the mobile validates the PC10IMG.zip where I get an error on the CID.
Rooter:
- Can't test this until the downgrader works, but it could already be OK ;-)
Will update the stuff on the site in a few hours so please don't pick up the version there just yet as it's the old one.

I adjusted the Cyanogenmod instructions by the goldcard sections of the of XDA, which I hope made it work. As said, I am now on CM7.1 after downgrading and rooting with my own code.

Xubuntop - A full XFCE4 desktop

The stock Webtop sucks in my opinion. A outstanding concept, but poorly executed.
I'm working right now in a "revamped version" of the stock one. I call it Xubuntop - A full XFCE4 desktop.
Xubuntu is originally a Ubuntu with XFCE4 environment and some optimizations. Check the original Xubuntu project (Google it)
I'm thinking in two versions: Lightweight and Full
Lightweight: flashed in Osh and ready to go!
Full: flashed in Osh and uses Webtop2sd to expand the internal disk space.
I know that many tried to do this and I warn you guys, I'm not rediscovering the wheel. It's just a "easy way" to get those extra applications using the Xubuntu as a base.
It will feature optimizations to make the environment as lightweight as possible, giving the CPU more room to process whatever you want to execute.
I'm working two weeks on this and maybe this will be ready Saturday, but I can't promise nothing
Maybe I'll need help to make the zip to use in CWM.
So... let's go back to work
I have a questions.
Is Xubuntop for cm7/9 roms or blur/stock roms ?
Will it be dependent on the broken/outdated Motorola packages?
By this I mean, will we be able to make full use of the repos to install newer versions of software that are dependent on newer versions these packages. (E.g. the latest verision of Chromium that I can get working now is version 4 due to its dependencies breaking webtop, even when apt-get has been fixed.)

Xubuntop should work fine with the Blur and Stock roms.
CM7/9 boots the Webtop from the Webtop2sd? If yes, then I guess the "full" version can work.

In some parts, yes, it will be dependant.
My intention is to hold the core packages and add the lastest (and functional) repository with Arm support, 10.10 I guess.
The other alternative is get the source code and rebuild them in Arm architeture. This demmands a lot of work and I can't do it all by myself. But with more time and people, it can be done.
If it will run the latest available version of Chromium from the repositories (It was version 14 last time I checked) that's all I'm really concerned about. Good luck!
I guess it's impossible to squeeze a light version to fit inside the 0.8gb osh reserved space. Crap!
By the way, the system is more fluid than before. I'm trying to remove all non-essential packages right now.
With AT&T stock kernel (1Ghz) GtkPerf test run now in 13s. A huge difference.
Please give WebTop2SD a try to have a much bigger osh partition .

Edit:
I'm having a hard time trying to port the lastest Chromium-browser. I need to re-install ArchLinux in my desktop first and see if I can make it work there. I'll delay Xubuntop a bit trying to port it.
I did installed xfce4 after using webtop2sd. But i ended up with a lot of stuff laying around not used, i'd like some more integrated!

I'm working very hard to port the Chromium-browser 18.0.1025 (latest official), I've just bricked the webtop attempting to upgrade some core files... Not a problem... I was expecting this.
I'll not give up.
I broke my webtop so many times trying to get newer software to work that I just made a disk dump of a working partition that was configured how I want it. If I ever have problems, I just restore the disk dump, and within a few minutes I have everything working again.
this has me VERY excited, but XFCE still isn't lightweight enough IMHO.
What are your thoughts about Fluxbox? I remember having DamnSmallLinux on a 200mhz machine with 128MB of RAM, that was very responsive...
That said, we don't have a webtop subforum.
Which we really need, to collaborate efficiently.
Any ideas? This forum is way to frickin busy.
