Hi EPIC-lovers,
I've reversed-engineered some private APIs on the EPIC 4G to get access to the 4G technical information.
So if you want to know what your signal strength is and what tower your are connected to, check out our app "Sensorly", it's in the market. You can allow the app to upload coverage information and help build real coverage maps of all the carriers in the US... and yes, we have a wimax map.
I would have loved to add a screenshot here, but I haven't posted enough in this forum (you can get one at : wwwDOTsensorlyDOTcom/static/wimax.png)
We display
Network Access Provider Id
Network Service Provider Id
BSSID
CINR
RSSI
We're always looking for more users
PS: I've tried hard to get to the same information on the EVO and haven't come up with a solution yet ! Will post in that forum if I do.
Very cool - any plans on publishing source for the app?
Here's that screenshot:

EDIT: This could be very useful to users of the Indulge on MetroPCS, with LTE... feel free to PM me if you'd like some inroads there.
EDIT2: You can allow the app to upload information. Folks, this dev gets it right - and if Sprint had the same intentions with Carrier IQ, they'd have done the same thing.
And other good news...the new version now works with the Epic to report EVDO areas. YAY! Kudos to the developer for letting me bug him for while on this
Only thing the Epic sometimes goes to zero signal for a bit even though you are in a good signal area. But that's the radios fault for reporting that.
Pretty cool. It is like Waze for cell coverage. What is the turn around time from sending data to seeing the coverage map updated?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I think when I checked it was a couple of hours. Just make sure you have it set to send up while on cell.
Not a bad turn around time at all.

Just gave it a thorough try driving home from work on 4G with GPS running.. Thing collected and sent over 1400 messages in 12 miles. That's some good data collection and also good way to warm up the phone.. 40 degree battery when I got home.
Only bug I've found so far is I choose to send over wifi only and it still sent messages anyway while I was on 4G.. Other than that.. Ran smoothly
Cool, thanks!
They just installed a 4G tower less than a mile from my house so I've been sensorly-driving and updating, it appears I'm the only one though (my reports showed up about an hour later, no one else has added any). I'm hoping they up the power on the site; I can only connect in a few wide open areas, though sensorly is picking up the wimax data for several miles.
Good stuff, works great
Not sure if this thing actually works right. I sent a lot of messages from work yesterday while connected to 4G. 24hrs later, at work again, and it is still showing the same exact coverage and that my location is a no 4G forecast.

Some answers
Hi everyone, thanks for giving it a try...
The turn around time is at most within a couple hours. At maximum zoom level, it's probably within the hour and off-peak hours, within a couple minutes...
I don't see any backlog on the server handling that map so if data hasn't appeared, please email me the phone id (it's anonymous : created at install time) through the settings screen and explain the issue.
Thanks
Works good Thanks
awesome, thanks!!!
Amazing application.
No 4G in my area, but I'm glad I can find where it starts to show a signal!
So the big question is...when do we start see signal strength on 4g on the map instead of the just unavailable or available.
Very cool I saw the signal of the 4g and other data with it when I just passed through a 4g area. Excellent work!!!!

This app is just like Google Maps but instead of traffic shows you 4G on a very detailed scale. It's based off reports from other people running the app and helped me find a location 4 blocks away that had reported 4G. I walked over and got 2Mbps down on the SpeedTest.net app.
I live in NYC and 4G is not official here yet so this was a great surprise.
Look for "4G MapViewer" on the Market and grab it! You might find a location nearby and it will help everyone else!

Yeah but still a cool app, I would not have known where to look for 4G without it. There are too much scattered reports all over the forums and this puts it all in one place on a map. I think it's great!
I installed it just now and it looks really helpful

Interesting app. Saw it on the Epic forums.
Was in turlock/modesto ca this weekend and I swear the whole city is 4g. I tried to map it but keep getting some error. +1 on being a cool app though

been able to do this with sensorly for awhile but i'm glad they put out a 4g only one as well

Thanks for this little useful App, pulling it from the market as I type..

Cool app. I live in southern Utah with no 3g or EVDO right now and for some reason The app shows all of my area as having 3g and It shows a area where I know there is 3g as having only 1x. Kinda weird, wish it was more accurate.

Watch the bars at the top of the app (below the title bar), what do they show? The program only reports what the phone tells it is available. But there is also a "report map error" button under the Menu if the program's bars aren't matching up with your phone's.
Didn't seem to work on my Evo, map looked all messed up.

I like this. So the blue represents where people have traveled with this app enables?
According to the Get Clear app, my 4G coverage is the exact same as what sprint.com says.
Now if I only lived one house over...I'd actually get service! Damn house location...
just installed, seems to be working good so far on my phone.
If you zoom in far enough in an area not mapped well you can see dots everywhere someone tried out the app, it may not be a bad idea to drive around the block some with this on so your house doesnt stand out
Im restoring to my Sense rom now and going to see if there's any 4G where i stay at. Would suck to have a 4G phone and can't use 4G to either Nov Or Dec or better yet next year.
Hey, anyone else have network issues with the N1 today? Seems like none of my calls or texts are going through, but I have signal and everything. I went outside to use 3g, worked for a little and then stopped.. So I did a airplane off/on and now the data wont connect. Went back inside it connected again but text and calls wouldnt work.
Anyone else having any issues?

You need to provide more info like your general location. It might be a local issue or trouble with your phone.
I was on my phone all day in calls and data with no problems. I'm in the Chicago area.
Hi.. I have troubles with T-Mobile on 3G... but supposedly there is an issue with my mast in NR1.. I agree...where are you?

i had the same problem yesterday. It only happened to me at home when i left running around town i was able to connect for data. Also it was raining here so maybe that contributed to it

I've only had issues in my house, but that's because my house is a service-killer. No bars anywhere downstairs, but almost full 3G bars in my room. lol
Have you tried the new 5.XX series radios yet? I'm running 5.08 and notice little to no data loss or other data issues. There are moments of weirdness, but a quick disable/enable of mobile data does the trick in the most severe of situations.
Gonna upgrade to 5.12 now and see what's different (apparently touchscreen ****ty-ness is fixed). Worth a shot. Use fastboot though, never flash a radio in recovery, leaves too much up to chance.
I feel ya.. I was in universal last night and I had 4-5 bars of 3g and no internet, or at least really slooooow internet when it did work. T mobile needs to ramp up Orlando's and others servers/towers. When too many people use the internet at the same time it kills the towers bandwidth. While at Universal's Horror nights I figure everyone in the 45min-2Hr lines for the houses are using it. So that is bad. But once I left Orlando it worked fine.
Had Froyo Radio... Flashed new 5.12 today one and seems better. At least Agps is working much better.
Glad to know it's not just me. I had been searching on the Internet for people with the same issues and decided to come here. I'm in stl and my data connection will either work or not. Ive tried turning off the phone and then back on, airplane, etc.
Right now it works but it's nowhere near the 4 megs i was pulling last night, its hovering around 500 Kbps when it decides to work. Im sure tmobile is just upgrading some stuff.
Looks like its just Orlando where problem exists.

Lol wayyyyyy off topic, sorry OP
I generally get decent 4G speeds; anywhere from 3-5mbps down and 800-1400 kbps upload. I haven't checked in a while until today and I noticed my download speeds are significantly better. Not sure if it is just today, but I am averaging between 7-9 mbps download. Did anyone else notice better data speeds today?

Hopefully Sprint did some work because my 4g is all over the place and if I'm lucky I can get 3mbps
I'd test if I could. I live in a "excellent" coverage area... but alas no 4G. Outside I'll barely be able to connect. Maybe 10-15s on "poor" signal strength.
Anyway, enjoy!
How do you test it?
Edit....figured it out
Spectacles, Testicles, Wallet & Watch
My 4g Speed is awful below my 3g speeds and i can never stay connected more then 30 seconds.
I live in seattle which is suppose to have good coverage
People with Wimax issues:
Do you have the wimax latest radio version?
Have you tested wimax in your area on a different phone?
Also, Clearwire maintains wimax, not Sprint.
I live in Kansas City, so i get pretty good 4g coverage almost everywhere. as far as speeds go im typically hitting 10mbps. sometimes as low as the upper 7s
at work i can usually hit 15mbps, I'll post pics. My friend has a T-bolt and always gets so jealous haha. But I've heard Boise was one of the first to get 4g, idk why
According to Sprints coverage map I live in an excellent 4g area, now in real life that is not true. I called them not to long ago about my lack of 4g an connection issues and they did a service call, recorded radio numbers signal strength and all that jazz. A few days later I get a call from Sprint saying that the area I live in does not receive 4g very well (duh) and they notified Clear Wire about the issue etc. etc.
In short I live in a ****ty area but their (Sprint) map shows this magic blanket of 4g coverage that is not accurate by any standard. I have all the latest and greats radios etc but its just a no go for me. Sorry end of rant.
4G is available all over my city except a 2 block radius around my house.... F YOU SPRINT...Reception is complete crap at my house that I have to Force Roaming too...
According to Sprint I live outside a 4G area. But when I'm upstairs in my bedroom I can parely pull in a signal. It was enough to save me last night though. Comcast came in for a preinstall and accidentally cut my Verizon line, so I have no hardline internet at the moment. Its nice to have at least some connection to the outside world in the meantime.
I live in Phoenix, Az and we have no 4G out here.... I wonder if and when they will turn on the 4G out here. I hate paying the extra 10.00 a month and I cant use the 4G
Well I don't know how to post pics on here but my test says
8/18/2011
Download 8007 kbps
Upload 1447 kbps
Ping 211 ms
Is this good?..

I'd say that's one hell of a difference. I always get great signal outside my house, but the minute I walk in the house I got almost no signal.

Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
can it still be acquired for free?
As Far as I know. I got mine 3--4 months ago. All I can tell you is that it was free, no monthly charge but you do have to renew your contract, witch I just did when I bought my Sensation 2 months before so i didn't really care. So the criteria you have to meet is that. 1. must spend over 70 a month on your bill. 2. must have a 3-4G Phone. 3. Must be in a house that you or your parents own. or atleast be in a house you rent. Point is you can't live in a place that has any other units..apartments.. or duplex,, something to do with the signal ****ing up their phone. 4.Must have a land line for 911 purposes, something about the booster messes up your ability to call 911 from your cell when your in the range of your booster. I don't know why or how just that these are the things you have to meet in order to get one. I had a thread about it when I first heard about it. Some guy called 3 times and they said it didn't exist and me and a few other people told him that they most definitely do, call and if you get the runaround raise hell,, ask for a supervisor . whatever.. He did and a month later he got one.. I don't know if that thread is still up but search Free Tmobile signal boosters on xda and see if that thread is still up. Me and everyone else I talked to said it made a big difference. I mean. I was unable to make any calls or get anything above a slow edge data signal. now I get 3-5 bars and 4G at all times in my house. I posted the speed tests with and without the booster on my first post.. that speaks for itself...
How I found out about it was when I was at the Tmobile store paying my bill and looking around I was bullshitting with one of the reps and I was *****ing that I get great signal until the minute I walk in my house, He told me to get a signal booster. I asked if it was expensive. He said, no, they are free, just call Tmo customer service and I did and I got one. I really had no problem. I don't know why they don't advertise it but you can get one.
can someone post a pic of one?
@donsh00tmesanta , Sure man, here's how it works. It comes in 2 parts. Part #1 goes in the spot in your house where you get the best signal or at least 1 bar. (Most people put it on a window Ledge, that's where I keep mine. Part #2 goes anywhere in your house just must be 25 or more feet away from the part #1. Bye the way. All you need is a plug outlet to plug the boxes into. No need for wifi or any connection to your phone or computer internet, just electricity.
Part #1
Part #2
Thank you man!!!!
I am very interested into TMO when the GN arrives (LTE doesnt interest me, just a battery hog, 7-42mbps is good enough)
Hopefully I can score a booster

No matter the time of day, .40 Mbps is "typical" for download, .20Mbps for upload. That's on good days. I'm aware of all the factors that affect speeds, I just felt the need to vent about it for once.
I live on an island in the puget sound in washington state and 3G reception here is horrid. And that's after they've made some upgrades to our towers. I really don't understand why our service isn't better considering I live within miles of a major navy installation (Whidbey NAS).
Been on Sprint's Everything Data plan since August 2010 with my EVO 4G, which also requires the additional $10 charge for 4G capabilities (the nearest place I get 4G reception is over 30 miles away). I feel like I'm really having it stuck to me in the pocketbook.
If I don't have WiFi reception wherever I'm at, I typically wont even bother with 3G unless I have to. I'm more likely to just leave it off to save battery life.
Okay I'm done ranting, thanks for listening.

I don't think you are the only one. I came to this forum today to see if anyone else was having this issue. I'm also in Washington (Bellevue) and I used to get about 1,000 kbps and decent reception. Lately I'm lucky if I have 1 bar of 1x speed. My speeds are just as bad as yours. How is your signal strength?
