Does the xperia play qualify for that 18 months upgrade thing?

Would be awesome if we where a launche product.

*Sigh* And you believe the national oligopolies called "phone carriers" will agree with giving those timely updates?

Ya really I bought a branded phone and I wasted no time DEbranding it now I can't wait for all the updates that are sure to come much sooner than having rogers getting around to it

If it debranded wouldnt it register as r008i instead of r008a? I thought r008a means rogers

They were just using the Xperia Play as an example of the diverse device ecosystem that is Android, NOT on a list of what devices will receive Ice Cream Sandwich.

I dont understand the point of wasting money debranding it, your phone is still unlockeable from bootloader, and if we are based on the same terms, its likely that off any direct updates that factory unlocked phones will have.
A debranding on a carriers phone is only a makeup, but will not affect in any way SE updates or changes, because they are likely based on your IMEI

I just realized, I think that image is misleading I mean the HTC EVO and Droid 2 and even that cheap LG thing. I don't think they are getting icecream they don't even have android 2.3.

who really gives a **** about unlocking bootloader now there is nothing out there yet i did it just to get completely away from rogers bull**** and plus its only 15 bucks to give a try which i dont really care about.....but maybe you do

Just got the info that Xperia X10 will get gingerbread so why Xperia play wouldn't get ICS...
Of course it will
Remember defragmenting android and globalization tools, apps and games for any device!
All that to **** Apple Isucks

I'm a distrubutor and according to my sources in SE, they will update to ice cream - both neo, play and arc.
It's said that they won't do the silly mistake again in not having the newest os available to newer modells. (x10/mini/pro - 1.6)

in the OP picture, the Play was shown to illustrate the fact that there a variety of devices running different versions of android on different hardware, enforcing the necessity of one single version of the android API's to simplify development and reduce fragmentation.
There is no promise of ICS.

HTC gave up on updateing small HTC Tattoo long time ago, and now there is alot of GREAT roms that works way better then original HTC Sence rom. Froyo and Gingerbread. Hope that same thing would happen to X8 and we'll see few great roms based on Froyo or Gingerbread.

HTC Unlock bootloader and disable NAND protection campaign

UPDATE
"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience," Peter Chou, CEO of HTC
What is the point of this?
The idea of this is to convince htc to unlock the bootloaders and disable the NAND protection on their phones
Why should I support this?
Unlocking the bootloader and disabling the NAND protection will allow users to keep their phones up to date using custom roms such as CM7. Take the htc wildfire for example. In december 2010, HTC released a 2.2 update for the wildfire. However, hidden in this update was a new bootloader which could not (and still can not as of the 15th may 2011) be modified. It is unlikely that HTC will release another update for this phone, meaning that users are going to be stuck on this rom. The reason? So HTC can sell new phones. However what this is doing is putting users off buying HTC's devices since rival companies have announced that the users can easily unlock the bootloaders on their devices.
To support the campaign please sign the petition at http://goo.gl/uIeqv and you can like us on facebook at http://goo.gl/e1CqN and you can see updates on my blog at http://goo.gl/KdpFr

What does everyone else think
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
It is an nice intiative, but as already stated in other toppics, htc will for sure not unlock there bootloaders. It is just this what the economy is driving on: everyone has to buy new things as much as possible. It can be done in two ways: by making a crapy device or by constanly bringing out new devices. And since the first option will make people angry and go to other manufactures, the only thing left is to make sure that every device gets outdated. And thus to lock the bootloader.
But I signed the petition anyway, perhaps it will make them go searching for other options to make money.

We're here live at Google I/O, and the folks from Mountain View have just shared something rather interesting -- a coalition of manufacturers and carriers committed to making sure their Android devices receive the very latest updates. All four major US carriers (and Vodafone) as well as HTC< Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola are on board, and all will guarantee you timely upgrades to the latest version of Android for eighteen months after release, provided the hardware's capable.

18 months is the period in which an android device will get that promised regular update and support. Obviously.
I'll believe it when i see Vibrant GB source on my desktop
Best announcement of the Google I/O would be if they announced that Samsung is pushing GB to all Galaxy S phones.
I want this announcement. D:
Now the question is: Does this announcement apply to phone that are already released and sold. ex. Vibrant.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. The Nexus S is using the same SoC as the Vibrant and google is going to pass at least one major update to it, Ice Cream Sandwich. Plus our GPU is powerful enough to supply the holographic UI.
Look at the N8 for example. The CPU is weak but the GPU can still nicely support the UI along with no lag.
If Nexus S gets ICS and we don't.
I'm going to Samsung's store and saying HERE i dont want your phone and go back home and pick up some other great phone of that time.
their the same damn phones, both should get the same treatment, no?

I'm still mad about the face unlock thing. No James Bond retinal scan? Lame.
Good news though. It's about time SE got with it.
Awesome, Really gives me confidence that SE is not that bad after all, Never been a fan of using another ROM, As I love Sony Ericsson's, I will use another ROM once the Xperia Play is no longer updated or supported by SE which I hope never happens while I use an Xperia Play as my primary device.
I always had confidence in SE. <3 this company and their phone. Now, if only we could get it as stock ICS and not with their UXL overlay. Maybe with ICS it'll be much better looking, have to wait and see

Your timing error is what made the article irrelevant though. Your outdated article greatly contradicts the new one that SE made ... making people believe that there is no such ICS update when really SE confirmed the updates after the launch of ICS source codes.
It's like positing an article about the Samsung Galaxy Nexus telling people it's a 8mp camera and not 5mp but using a 2 month old article as reference....

Ohhhh the irony!!!! The Desire HD/Z were the devices that launched their htcsense.com service, a service that could backup all of the personal data on your phone into the cloud. Earlier this year they shut said service down and this has resulted in the death of the ICS update. They were born together and they died together. Very poetic or something...

I love HTC's hardware and design, but they screwing up the software side more and more. Can't they just release a 3.0 kernel for DHD for developers? I mean they're multi-billion dollar companies and can't even spend a few thousands to develop a 3.0 kernel? We have developers doing the same thing in their free time here . . .
I wouldn't have been this sour if they didn't say "We will release ICS for DHD next year" and went "Oh no, we won't, why? Because **** you that's why.". My next phone will be a Google phone and it will probably come from Samsung.
Bye bye HTC. Nothing more to say.

Earlier this year they shut said service down and this has resulted in the death of the ICS update. They were born together and they died together. Very poetic or something...

this is not explanation!
Atleast they can STILL PROVIDE UPDATE
because No one is FORCING U TO UPDATE if u fear to lost the data....
some people dont care about that so just give the update, those ho fear to lose some data, no one is forcing them to update if they fear!!!
Just hand it out to the devs, HTC...
How about they do it like samsung or iPhone via a computer where u can back up all u data and install what ever ics they provide and restore back u data? It's just a lame excuse from them not to do it. Probably its full of bugs and all dhd newer then a year will be returned. My 2 cents

I personally think the main reason this has happened to HTC is because of the whole Beats crap. Before HTC had an image of well built technically advanced handsets and focusing on the whole Sense thing. Over the last year and a bit this has turned into Beats by Dr Dre and all that kind of nonsense.
Chill guys, put down the pitchforks. We just need source for the Desire S or Incredible S and then it'll be fully working.
"Fitting all that Ice Cream Sandwich into the Desire HD would require repartitioning the internal space, and repartitioning risks overwriting personal content"
I think HTC forgot that we have something call the micoSD card...:silly:
With most apps, photos, videos, personal data can be backup to the micoSD card, how "much" personal content will we risk to lose?
well play HTC well play :good:

If you promise me you'll buy me a car and you don't but I manage to build one by myself, should I just say ok no problem?? It's a stupid example, but they said they would release it, so they had to release it.
I personally won't buy anymorew from htc, unless they do something awesome, and they haven't been doing it for the last year, so I have little hope....
