Hey Guys,
I know this is the general forum and this may be more appropriate for the Development forum, but that forum seems to have threads started by mainly developers so I don't want to waste space. Anyways, I'm hoping someone can help me out. I followed the steps for rooting shown on the Gingerblur guide and I can't seem to finalize it. I was able to get Gingerbreak on my phone successfully. When I click root on the app it says that it is in progress and to wait a few minutes but does not progress from there. I've let it sit 10+ minutes twice now and have restarted the phone inbetween the attempts. The phone is in USB Debugging. Thanks fellas.
You have an external SD card in your phone?
I just use gladroot. Flash to stock 1.26, run gladroot, update to 1.57, update to 1.83, run afterupdate.bat

Using that method, you can then backup with titanium backup.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm new to Android and don't exactly know how to "flash" back to a previous update yet (will have to read up on it more). I've jailbroken multiple iPhones so I'm not a complete phone noob. I also haven't figured out how exactly to use Titanium Backup yet either haha.

I just gingerbroke my phone and had a similar issue. Make sure that you have USB debugging enabled and that you also have the SD card inserted and mounted. I was stalling during root because my SD card wasn't mounted.
I just ran into this. Gingerbreak will not work unless you have an external sd card mounted. I will not work with the internal card alone. It only wipes the internal card though. A bug perhaps?
Look in the development thread for a guide on flashing and gladroot. Gladroot doesn't say it works for 1.83 but it does. Many people have had success with it.

So if it works with 1.83 I won't need to flash right?
Gladroot has now been confirmed as working with 4.1.83.
I just used gingerbreak on my 4.1.83 phone last night. I wish I had known it was going to wipe the internal SD card because I lost a lot of my apps stored to the sd card! That sucked having to reinstall them.
I'm using gingerbreak on my 1.8.3, it works fine

If you have a problem with gingerbreak hanging? Then what you gotta do is set your usb connection to motorola phone portal then run gingerbreak and it will work!
Do you have a alt home installed? I had Launcher pro and the same thing kept happening to me, so i uninstalled it and when I tried again it worked like a charm.

I installed the new 2.2.320 sbf from TBH, just to start fresh. I have now tried 6 different programs to root my phone. None of them are working...Is anyone else having this issue? And if you got it working, what steps did you take to fix it? Thanks in advance
Use z4root. Had The same problem. This is a one click root application.
Yup, same problem here too. I was actually going to ask if anyone has the z4 root app because it disappeared from the market. It was the only thing that worked the first time I flashed the new SBF.
ya, after flashing the new SBF, had to manually install Z4 as it wasnt in the market. Also it seems as if the D2 method wasnt working properly.
Thanks for the help everyone...

YEs it works. That was the point of this thread. lol
I had to wipe data to get z4 to work. I don't know why but if I downloaded all my apps again and set everything up it wouldn't work.
Put your phone in airplane mode, reboot, run z4root, let it reboot you phone. Once it powers on take it out of airplane mode and you should be rooted.

Rooting through ADB works... z4root is much easier of course.
The .340 OTA installed on my phone today. Lost root.
I tried the DarkOnion batch file (DoRootWin_2.1.4) several times and could not get it to run to completion.
As mentioned, Z4 (in airplane mode) worked fine.
I tried this...my phone is telling me it cannot down the file because the file type is not suported by my phone. What am I missing? Thank you!!!
I too am having issues with rooting after the ota update. I initally was rooted using the rootmyx2 one click gui from sli3ntki11 and did the update, now nothing will give me root access, I tried z4, rootmyx2 (again), and tried the doroot.bat method through the android sdk install. Kinda at a loss. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

So I believe I figured it out. I have two existing superuser.apk in my system/app folder. This from what I read in some other posts is confusing z4 ( go figure smart enough to root but not to overwrite, lol) but the directory is read only. The other post gave a link to the steps to access it but the page was not found. Can anyone give me the steps to take to gain access to the directly and make it read/write so I can remove those two rogue files and get rooted?

z4root not supported on my droid X
hi,
i updated my Droid X to the latest version. 2.3.340. and downloaded the z4root through my phone from the link here and i get an error message that the file is not supported on this phone. please help i am new to this and still don't fully understand all of the terms. i tried to download the z4root 1.2 from 4shared.com but the phone hangs and nothing happens. any type of help will be appreciated, thanks.
did you sucessfully install it or did you get the error while trying to install it. you will have to download the apps installer from the market and use it to install the z4root.apk from your sd card.

In this forum there is the stickied thread for beginners that links to AndroidCentral directions for a one click method.
I used that to get rooted without any issues.
Then I went to the devoper forum and used the How To guide for getting DL30. That worked with no issues too.
1. You need to upgrade (OTA if possible) to DL09 first.
2. Follow directions exactly as stated.
3. After root, install Titanium Backup. Its not mentioned in these directions but its very helpful and lets you back up specific apps. I only backed up my apps that have specific data or were actualy purchased. I redownloaded others, such as maps, etc.
4. Follow directions exactly as stated and be patient.
Now, the first time I had ran the one click, I got the same 'error'. no worries, just run it again. It took me two times for it to run properly.
Make sure you are following directions and have USB debugging and don't click the notification to start mass storage. Just turn on USB debugging and plug in the phone, then run Odin and files as directed.

Yes. It worked just fine. I think those that had errors maybe had DL09 from this dev site vs the OTA or simply didn't follow the directions perfectly.

ok.. thanks for clearing that up
I had an issue with the one click root.
The phone needed to be power cycled and unplugged from the computer during the first auto-reboot and i had to mount then un-mount the device. The mount and un-mount is on the phone after you plug it back in.
Also, I read somewhere on here that the OTA DL09 was pulled due to the emergency call issue. Not sure how true it is...
And, the froyo update was the first time I rooted and loaded a different OS.
So should I keep trying to root with the one click our should I update to DL09 then one click?

You could root with one click then use Odin to flash the stock DL09 that is here in the forums.
OR, just wait for Verizon to put out their fix and of course the latest update which could just be DL30 or a fixed DL09.

Since its basically identical to DL09 but with the 911 bug fixed and I was able to one-click root on my DL09 without any issues, I'd say yes.

As soon as your phone reboots disconnect it from the USB. Wait for it to boot up then reconnect it to the USB.
That is what I had to do to get the one click to run on DL09.
I have an AT&T Atrix on the 1.5.7 firmware. I do have all drivers installed, USB debugging enabled, and am using Windows 7 (dual booted on a macbook 2011).
I believe my problem is that I originally rooted it on the old firmware and then i installed the 1.5.7 OTA update. I now have the Superuser app on my phone but it does not give anything root permission. I've attempted to root again via Superoneclick but it gets hung right after pushing pneuter or gingerbreak to the phone. I have also tried unrooting but that gets hung up as well.
Can anyone give me some things to try or even walk me through something?
Thanks so much!
search the dev forum for gladroot as to why it doesn't work...
and you can try to re-root using gingerbreak, which is also in the dev forum.
basically updating without following the proper steps will not keep your root. and also.
NEVER USE SUPERONECLICK!
spend some time in the dev forums. you'll learn a lot.
Thanks! I'll look into the gladroot issue.
I have tried Gingerbreak but when I run the program with my phone connected, the spinning loading cursor displays for a second then nothing happens. I've ran as administrator but that doesn't do anything different.
It's worth noting, on 1.8.4 Gingerbreak 1.2 worked fine. I know recovery wasn't playing nice unless plugged in. That could also help. Obviously it won't hurt.

Update to 1.83 and use gingerbreak. You'll need an external SD card though. It works great.
Not sure if this is the place to put this, but I'm having a similar problem, even if I got here differently.
I tried superoneclick, and I tried gladroot. In each case, the program seemed to run successfully, did everything I expected from the directions, no error messages. Claimed success at the end of the run. The superuser app is installed, but no apps are listed. When I try to run an app that needs root, like Root Explorer, it just complains that my phone isn't rooted.
I used the directions and downloads here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
Build number was OLYLA_U4_0.37.4
My phone is on Bell, so I used the Bell directions. Anyone else have or overcome this problem?
i am rooted, all root apps work.
my problem is android commander says am not rooted (windows xp)
and adb dont work
any solution?

So I tried doing the webtop hack anyway, and when I got to this step:
Code:
adb shell
su
my phone prompted me to allow root access. Finished the process and it's working fine. Ran Root Explorer, it asked for permission, and now it works fine, too.
Maybe doing something as explicit as 'su' in adp shell was the kick in the pants it needed. Either way it's working now...
I thought maybe I'd added superuser to auto-end list, for whatever reason, but when I checked it wasn't there...

So I picked up an ATT Atrix 4g the other day and I love it! Last cell's were a BlackBerry and before that an iPhone. Android OS blows those away. So I am the tinkering type and want to root and use custom ROM (greyblur). Currently I am upto date (version 4.1.83). From what I read here, I need to flash back to 1.26 via this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072). Installed RSDlite, passworded file, removed sim card, memory card, booted with RSD support, opened RSDlite, selected file (extracted to c:\GladRoot...also tried directly into c, Start. Created the image, it rebooted my atrix, and then the Status threw this message:
"Failed flashing process. failed flashing process. Phone did not re-enumerate after RAM-downloader was sent. (0x703E); phone disconnected.
Progress: Exectuded 100%
Result: FAIL
So was am I missing here? I am on version 4.1.83, but there is reference to 1.2.6 and 1.5.2...I assume these numbers are the firmware revision/version? So as I take it I need to "downgrade" from 4.1.83 to 1.26....? I am kinda lost here. Any help in the right direction would be great.
Look here to root your Atrix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
1) Where can I verify that I am on 1.2.6 on my Atrix?
2) I ran the gladroot.bat as admin (win7 user) and got:
waiting for root access to kick in...
psneuter failed to execute properly
I extracted gladroot to c:\gladroot
Any thoughts?
Did you try to use Gingerbreak?
This is really easy, i got no problem with that...
Also, I think you need to install motorola usb windows driver to use rsdlite...
No I didnt try gingerbreak.
I do have the Moto USB drivers installed.
Settings>about phone>build number
Will show if you are on 4.1.26
When it comes to the psneuter fail, I had an issue with that too I believe. Try battery pull/restart. Make sure phone is fully charged. Make sure to right click and run it as admin. Other then that, I don't know what else to suggest.
Edit: if you have any system apps frozen with titanium backup, try unfreezing them and also make sure you have the home motoblur launcher unfrozen if you are flashing an sbf.

So what does this really mean? I used gingerbreak after superoneclick hung on psneuter. Phone rebooted after gingerbreak, but superuser app was nowhwere to be seen. I got cold feet and did a factory reset thinking this was all I needed to undo what gingerbreak (and superioneclick?) did. EasyTether now hangs when disabling to I think something is broken.
using gingerbreak to root is real simple I can't post a URL, but briefmobile has instructions on how to do so using gingerbreak. briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root
Gingerbreak and Gladroot are equally good. Some don't like Gingerbreak as it can wipe internal sdcard.

Hello people,
I bought an Acer Iconia A500 on Friday and am trying to root it using the Gingerbreak apk method from this forum.
I have Gingerbreak installed on my tab, locked it in portrait, USB debugging is enabled and I have a formatted SD card mounted. However, when I press 'Root' it just hangs for ages doing nothing and I don't get the reboot. When I check in settings, the SD card is somehow now 'Unavailable' and it isn't recognising it at all! When I reboot it myself, it is available again. It's as though Gingerbreak is making the SD card invisible to the tablet.
I've spent the last 4 hours reading through a lot of threads and posts from people on here, Youtube and other places and haven't come across an explanation for my problem.
I hope I can get an answer to this problem as it is driving me crazy!!
Thanks in advance,
Yarn.

sounds to me like you're either using an improperly formatted microsd or that youre using the wrong version of gingerbreak.
