Hello,
I have been trying to figure this out for over 24 hours. I feel like I am so close yet so far. I have watched video after video, read guide after guide and still no luck.
I have tried the adb method (no luck whatsoever) and the root folder + visionary and cannot get my phone to permanently.
My android version is 2.2.1
I have Root File Manager installed
I have Super User installed
I have Visionary r.14 installed (tried MULTIPLE versions)
TempRoot works fine until my phone reboots (which is supposed to happen) but when I press Attempt PermRoot my phone reboots and it goes back the to the way it was unrooted.
My goal here is to put a new ROM on my phone (i.e. GingerBread) or something like it.
Can someone PLEASE help me?
Thank you in advance
Matt

Use this thread. Follow the instructions to the "T" and you will be fine. It is very simple and pretty much dummy proof. This is the g-free method. I have rooted 3 phones with this method with no issues, and this is my first Android phone. Good luck!
Thank you very much! I did get it rooted and I am working on installing my ROM. That was a very quick response, Thank you
You are very welcome.
i dont mean to sound like a noob, but can you push the gfree files to data local by using the terminal on your phone correct?

I haven't used the gfree method but you need atleast temp root access to make data R/W (read write) so unless you have temp root no. But if you do it'd be easier to just use a root explorer.

i have temp root right now, but whenever i use file manager, it doesnt show data local for some reason. Im just trying to do everything from my phone. I prolly should just learn adb shell and get it over with.

you need
1) root permission
2) root explorer
3) root permission for that root explore.
just astro or file manager will not work, they do not have SU access.
try Super Manager...https://market.android.com/details?id=gpc.myweb.hinet.net.TaskManager&feature=search_result
Question, i used visionary on my mt4g, but wondering i have to do this on someone elses phone and for the g2 there is the visionary gfree method via phones terminal emulator....is there a similar method for the mt4g? Adb does not want to cooperate with me on my computer so i gave up

I have tried over the last 3 days to perm root my phone I have everything downloaded that the post say and I got the temp root to work fine but when I put the root file on my sdcard and use terminal emulator it keep telling me that it is not found. I have not recieved the OTA update yet but I want my phone perm root I need help bad!!!!! Someone please help me what do I do.......
Let me explain what your post looks like:
"Hi, I read the instructions and don't follow them correctly, please help me to understand what I'm not doing right, but I won't give you any information whatsoever about what I'm trying to do and what response I receive, I'll let you guess that or count on your telepathic abilities and just wait for the answer".
Here's the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Follow the instructions carefully and post the exact step which fails for you. That includes posting the exact command that you attempt and the response that you receive.

Yeah in all fairness to the first reply, there really isnt much info to go on to help ya troubleshoot. Tell us which step you are on first. The things that come to mind when you are saying the file is not found is that the root file is not on the root of your sd card or that you didnt punch in the commands correctly in terminal emulator.

Just a shot in the dark but are you putting the space in after cd when entering the commands?
su
cd /sdcard/root
If you don't have the space, it will say not found..
Hello everyone, Android newbie here. Got my Motorola Atrix today and I have a question about the Webtop over HDMI mod. Read a whole bunch of threads on here and managed to get my phone rooted, unlocked the bootloader, and installed CWM without too many issues, but I have no idea how to install this mod:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144119
I have the Android SDK installed but I have no idea how to use it. I tried looking for a step by step guide on how to install it but didn't have any luck. Hopefully someone here can provide an answer.
Thanks all.
Ok, I figured out (kinda) how to use adb. Unfortunately, on the first step where I type in 'adb push DockService.apk /sdcard/' I get "failed to copy DockService.apk to /sdcard//DockService.apk Read-only file system"
Help?
EDIT: Nevermind figured it out myself. SD card was mounted on PC instead of phone.
mount the file system as r/w. get root explorer, give it root and hit the mount filesystem as r/w. thats the fastest way for noobs
Me and my best friend both have Kindle Fires now. I rooted & flashed the latest MIUI onto both of them successfully over the past week, so we're running the latest version available. What we've found is that when we both try to attach to his wireless router, they seem to disrupt each other or confused the router and eventually our wifi goes bye-bye on our Kindles. When just one of us is trying to attach to his router, it goes through fine & seems to stay connected well without any issue.
Can anyone offer any recommendations on how to perhaps customize the wifi connection on either the Fire or the wifi router to try and resolve this issue?
Thanks much for your help in advance! Please ask any questions if I left out any details that could help : ]
Does MIUI have the MAC address problem? That'd be the first place I'd check. THen I'd check the router and see exactly what they're trying to do. My thoughts:
Either they have the same MAC, same name, or are vying for the same IP.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! And thank for that related thread link! I reviewed that post and I have to admit, I'm a lil lost with where to start or what to do with that. I have a feeling both devices may be running the same MAC address, but I'm in the process of confirming that today. I also tried forcing a static IP on the Fire when connecting, but that didn't seem to resolve the problem.
Anyone have any, dare I say, more simple instructions for how I might go about altering my devices MAC address with MIUI? I'm not sure that the information in that post is fully applicable to the MIUI rom, so I'm hesitant to begin trying to give it a go, and plus, I might need something a little more noob-friendly... I could use a little more handle-holding with this, as I'm fairly fresh to rooting & flashing ROMs (but fairly computer literate).
look at post #24 in the linked thread - seems to be a easier solution
Oh, thanks! ... That does look much more manageable Now to just figure out where to get the file from the stock ROM and replace it. I did a backup of my stock stuff via TWRP prior to flashing MIUI, so does anyone know where I can locate this file from the stock amazon ROM after I've completed a backup of stock via TWRP?
I then assume that after locating the stock version of the file, that I would just replace the file in the root directory/system/bin right on the Kindle when it's attached to my PC via USB.
Yah.. I'm a noob, but trying! : \
Stock file I need to find: /system/bin/wlan_loader
there is one attached 2 or 3 posts after #24 - that should do it for your needs
Great! Thanks again!!!
This part of the post gets me a little lost. I assume I need to purchase & download Root Explorer ($3.99 in Market). As for performing the same thing this person did, I'm not quite sure how to go about doing that. One question I have is: Is Root Explorer absolutely necessary to perform this file replacement? It seems a little more involved than just simply replacing the file on the device while it is plugged in to my PC via USB.
I used root explorer, mounted as r/w, made a copy of the original JIC, overwrote the existing file within /system/bin and modified the permissions to appear as the original (rwxr-xr-x) rebooted leaving the system as r/w
Sure enough mac address is the same as when I was in 6.1 Kindle Fire OS.

Specifically, here are the things I'm not 100% clear on:
1) 'mounted as r/w' - I assume this means mounting as read/write; is this performed via Root Explorer?
2) 'made a copy of the original JIC' - I do not understand what is meant by 'JIC'
3) Can file permission changes as described above be performed in Root Explorer?
I greatly appreciate any insight! This appears to be the solution to my problem, not it's just a matter of execution on my part. Thanks, guys!
would use file explorer from the market - no cost and does the same
if you activate "root explorer" and "mount as root" in the settings all at the bottom

file explorer does this with the above settings automatically
2) 'made a copy of the original JIC' - I do not understand what is meant by 'JIC'

would mean he means the file to exchange
3) Can file permission changes as described above be performed in Root Explorer?

you can also do with file explorer - long tap on file - properties - change permission
Awesome - b63 - you're excellent
Ummmm... But I have to ask a really stupid question. I can't seem to find the /system directory on my Fire. I already had ES File Explorer... and I'm in it now, and I can only look around on my SD card it seems... Is the /system directory on the main internal storage of the device, or on the 'SD card?' Any help in finding this directory on my device would be appreciated! Sorry for the nooby questions n such
are the root settings made in the settings of es ?
then you can set your start directory to / somewhere in the settings
or simply go one directory up
when you are on / then you see the system directory like all the others (sdcard also)
OK... I'M SO CLOSE!
I got up to the root directory ( / ) and found the /system/bin directory... I have the new (well, old stock version) wlan_loader file from the linked thread that I downloaded on my Kindle on the SDCard ready to overwrite the existing file.
I definitely have Root Explorer on in ES File Explorer - it prompted me to allow and I did every time it asked. I then tried to copy the stock version of the file over my current version in /system/bin, but it said that the copy failed. I then went and tried to delete the existing file in /system/bin, but it said something like 'this file cannot be deleted' I'm not sure what is keeping the file locked. Do I need to modify the permissions of the file to be writable or something?
I hard-pressed on the file and tried to play around with it, but the only close option I have is 'Properties,' which didn't seem to allow me to change anything about the file though. So, I'm stuck : \ Help!?
OK, I got it! I didn't flip the 'Mount /, /system as writable option after switching on Root Explorer :\ My bad! But I was able to overlay the file now Let's test my MAC address now after rebooting.
looks promising ...
GET-R-DONE!
Yahoo! I got it!
I rebooted and everything seems to be functioning just fine - I'm connected to Wifi like normal, no big deal... AND, my MAC address is totally different than what it was before, so I think this did the trick!
Now to test it concurrently with my best friend's Kindle to ensure we can sit on the same network / router together. If it doesn't work, then I'll look to replace his wlan_loader file as well
Thanks for all your persistent assistance b63! I really appreciate it : ]
Was fun, and I learned a lot : ]
but take care if you change his one as well not to end up with the same mac again ...
and as allways - glad to help ...

Is there a way to root the Streak 5 or install custom recovery without using USB connection? The USB charger port is broken so I am unable to connect through USB. I´ve tried to root the phone with GingerBreak and Z4Root without success. Maybe it´s possible to root the phone or flash recovery with Flash_image in Terminal Emulator but I am unable to find a guide to do so. Any help would be apreciated, I´ve searched the forums here but am unable to find the answer I´m looking for.
edit:
I´m on Android 2.2.2, 360 stock ROM, build 17397.
Well, if the answer you were looking for is "yes it can be done", then it's obvious why you haven't found the answer you were looking for.
You have to have a working port on the Streak to install CWM since installing a custom recovery requires being in the Streak's Fastboot mode. Rooting may be possible, but unlikely since you have to copy files to the \system directory, which isn't writable unless you've rooted using CWM to install the files or ADB to push them.
Short of finding an exploit to root with, he might(?) be able to by disassembling it and pushing root to /data/local and setting permissions with a pc.

ah.. i see... by taking out innerSD and manually push root into it.. it seems possible that way...
Rooting is ultimately getting SU somewhere runnable and changing it's permissions to 06755.
It just makes the most sense to place it in /system/xbin 99.95% of the time.
it seems the guy doesnt read the forum thorough enough.. because there is solution to it already..

Dont recall gingerbreak working on 350+ as dell pretty much patched everything.
I believe it works on 318 or thereabouts, but OP is on 360 he already stated it didnt work (but not which exact version of gingerbreak)
well.. at least he can try first... but it seems not possible is it?
Gingerbreak version 1.2 works on stock 351 but not on stock 360.

That sounds like a good idea since I have already cutted out for access to the internal SD card. What would be the best program for Windows 7 to push root to the SD card and change the permissions?
You would need to be able to read ext3 partitions and modify the file permissions.
I've never bothered trying under windows, the simplest way is to do it under linux.
You can install it in a VM if you wish, or you can try and figure out how to do it with additional software under windows.
Regardless you should try pushing su to /data/local/ and setting it's permissions to 06755 (rws--r-s-r-x).
If you get that far we'll continue from there
Would it be possible to get a repacked 360 stock ROM (apk or zip package) that is already rooted, and then install it on the Streak using the 360 stock recovery? Maybe that´s not possible because of the signature verification but I wonder if it would be possible. Then I would have to find someone with a rooted 360 ROM to make the package for me.

sorry to bust in. /data is mounted nosuid for a reason. Don't know whether this is so on the 360, but at least check ($ mount |grep /data) before you open your device and risk hardware damage.
