[Q] email on tablet and mobile - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Hi,
I've got a Galaxy S2 on pre-order (only available on the 18th here) and plan to buy one of the new Galaxy Tabs too (not sure yet if it will be the 10.1 or 8.9 model).
When I configure both the S2 and the Tab to the same exchange email-account, I can read email on either of the devices. But both will put an icon in the notification-bar when new mails arrive. When a new email is read on one device, do the notifications remain on the other one until you discard them?
H.D

Unfortunatly no the exchange server "Push-email" to devices running IOS and Android so it will not back sync.

So the limitation is forced by Exchange-server and not the email-client on android side? That sucks.

You are correct, but hopefully in the future with the increase in people with both a android phone and tablet we might get a feature to sync notifications maybe through NFC

How about Outlook Sync?

Just wondering, any news about being able to sync with Outlook?
I do not use online e-mail. I would get this phone but only if I can sync with Outlook both at home and work (Exchange). Need Contacts, Calendar, and e-mail (if possible).
Has anybody heard anything about it?
I would think they will use HTC Sync... but just wonder if it will be available or not.
Thanks.
HTC Hero does that.. So I am guessing it will be supported or else there is an app (TouchDown) that will do the same thing..

I think you can be 99% sure this will happen. I don't think Sprint would release a flagship device that wouldn't be compatible with 85+% of the business users that would like to purchase.
I wouldn't worry, and as stated, the Hero does this, as does the Nexus One, so I'm sure the Evo will be fine.
I hope it supports active sync encryption. My company switched over to this just recently and everyone with android phones were hosed. They will not install Touchdown on the server either.
I haven't heard anything about android actually supporting this protocol, has anyone?

Most likely. I don't see HTC not doing so. Plus they just updated the HTC Sync for the Desire and the Legend.

You need to speak to your IT person to allow for both in the encryption policy. So the android is not hosed. This is still secure while allowing those phones such as Iphone 2G and 3G that does not have encryption capabilities. The Iphone 3GS does have this. You can also support by individual mailboxes as well so you can fine tune those who do and those who don't. There are a few ways to implement this. I assume you have Exchange 2007/2010?
Touchdown is not implemented at the Server level. It's on your phone.
If you are looking for a complete Exchange experience I would suggest looking at moxier mail.
www.moxier.com - it allows for Mail, tasks, calendar and contacts with lots of corporate features. Remote wipe, etc. I do not think that your IT admin should have a problem with this setup either.
HTC's own mail on the Desire, Legend EVO has more capabilities than the same HTC mail client on the Incredible. Not sure if Verizon is the one holding it back.
Lots to think about

I was under the impression Touchdown had a server-side plugin as well as an install on the device. If its just on the device I wonder if it would work for us. I don't have a device to test at the moment, I'm still rocking the TP2 and nobody here that I have access to really uses an android at the moment.
I work at a hospital and we need to keep all of our data extremely locked down. We can't allow any specific accounts to have less "lockdowns" than other accounts so it's not a possibility to tweak settings individually. I guess I'll just need to pickup an android device and try it out.
Moxier looks interesting as well, I'll have to give it a try once I get my hands on another phone.
Thanks for the tips!

Try using XDAndroid, and load it up to see if it'll work. I'm currently booting XDAndroid on my TP, and it runs fairly smoothly (when it doesn't, I'm sure its hardware faults with my POS device).

Anytime! Both these programs are very good as well as the built in extra capabilities from HTC phones. Unlike the Google N1 phone which does an okay job of Exchange Sync. HTC with Sense has a better Exchange interface as well as increased capabilities. It allows for server searches, etc. I have heard that the Google N1 doesn't allow for this or contact and calendar sync perhaps due to their strong ties to their own google contacts and calendars.
In regards to the Touchdown.
No Hassle Setup
TouchDown™ does not require you to run a separate program on your computer to forward your data to the phone. Simply install the product, configure it on the phone and get going in a couple of minutes.
Also Moxier has a nice interface. Both are very capable and will fit into any locked down environment. Both can take PIN requirements as well as WIPE devices remotely as well.
Good luck.

Enterprise

In the Keynote, there was discussion of "over 20 new Enterprise features." From the Keynote, we know some of them were:
1. Auto discovery
2. Security Policies
3. GAL Lookup
4. Device Admin API's
5. Exchange Calendar support
From the Froyo test release I've see exchange signatures activated.
Does anyone know the rest? Any other discoveries that I missed? I'm really hoping that they enable folder push and the ability to transfer messages between folders in the final build.
Is there a list anywhere that you guys have seen?

For the GAL, if you compose an email and type the person's last name (provided that your GAL is "last, first") it'll autosearch the GAL. For the exchange calendar, this is supported out of the box and works well. It doesn't folder push unfortunately. I personally use rules that only work on my laptop (i.e. not server side rules) so that everything's in my inbox until I log in. Looks like the ability to move items into folders is also a no show.

We’ve added Exchange capabilities such as account auto-discovery and calendar sync. Device policy management APIs allow developers to write applications that can control security features of the device such as the remote wipe, minimum password, lockscreen timeout etc.

Looks like its there and no interface to use, or its not there and you have to wait for 'official'
Within Exchange, I can choose to Remote Wipe the device, the same way I can remote wipe an iPhone or WinMo phone. It just didn't do anything.
PIN enforcement is another. Because of our Exchange security policy, I get asked to set a Password or PIN while setting up activesync.
Another enhancement over 2.1 is Office 2007 files are supported (pptx, docx, xlsx) and quick office pinch-zoom works, so more consistent with rest of OS
I haven't been able to get my N1 set up for our Exchange environment. I'm coming off a 3GS and didn't have any issues. Our policy isn't set particularly stringent - don't allow non-provisionable devices, enforce simple passwords, password recovery and no encryption. Keep getting the "your device doesn't support the policies pushed by the server" message, or whatever it is.
I was wondering if certain elements of the EAS policy aren't supported yet? No clue.

I got that when my company switched over to 2007 exchange, until I let the IT department know that they needed to flip the switch for Android devices (they had done BB, WM, et al)...
In the short term I used TouchDown, it has a free trial period that you can use as many times as you want, you just have to set your account back up once a week.

Can you expand on that? I'm not familiar with changes that need to be made to allow Android via EAS. Am I missing something? Would rock if I could get it to work.
BTW, I did upgrade to Froyo.

On my companies exchange 2007 server, they have the option to block or support mobile devices. Out of the box, it had no devices allowed to sync, so they had to turn on sync for different mobile devices. They had done Windows Mobile and BlackBerry, but forgot to do Android until I reminded them that some of use use Android devices, and would like to use our native exchange support.
I got the same error you do until they changed the security settings to allow Android devices to sync as well. I would assume this is your case as well, given that Android, even 2.1, supports more security protocol than iPhone's regarding exchange, and our exchange server is set up with high levels of security (uses SSL, etc).
Anyways, just email your IT department and ask them to enable Android devices for mobile sync... if they say it is already allowed, then ask them what the settings are supposed to be for your phone... I would bet $5 they just never turned on mobile sync for Android devices.

Exchange integration

Hi
What is the exchange integration like on the tab? Does it do calendar integration like on the iPad with full options to accepts meeting requests etc?
Also, can it open word and excel docs from email and are there options for editing?
Thanks

Yes to the first question. And as for the second one, there is ThinkFree Office installed on the Tab out of the box so you can at least open MS Office Documents. As for editing, I think you would require something like the paid version of ThinkFree or Documents To Go from Dataviz (which is what I use). Neither of those softwares are as great as Keynote, Numbers or Pages are on the iPad.
The version of Thinkfree that came on my UK spec Tab can create/edit documents. I guess this may differ from region to region.

Dave

OK thanks guys.
How do you find the functionality of the ThinkFree? Is it adequate for creating and editing word and excel docs? This is really the dealbreaker for me.
Cheers
Just thought I'd post and say that the email client is the best if not on par with the HTC Mail client for use with Exchange. Its definitely the best looking too!
Calendar invites don't seem to work for me
I was just looking for any info/comments about exhange integration.
I've got a tab and have it set-up with my works Exchange server. Email/Calendar seems to work fine but I see no way of accepting new calendar invites. I can do this on my Desire just fine though.
Am I being a total moron or have others also noticed this?
Mike
There's no need to reply to this question as I found another thread further along and this seems to be a Android<>Exchange issue and not me being a moron. I recall reading just before I got my HTC Desire that HTC had done some extra work on exchange integration and I guess calendar invites was one example. Hey ho - hopefully it will work in the future but in the meantime the 7" screen on the tab means it's easy enough to log in to webmail and accept the occasional invites.
I still love the tab.
I've been testing it for about 2 weeks ...
ThinkFree office suite allows you to create/edit/review xls, doc files.
Works well. PDF viewing is better than Adobe Acrobat reader ... (faster).
About Exchange integration, IMHO it is there but it remains a bit light ...
It supports :
- Multiple Exchange email accounts with push mail (both Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007).
- Multiple Exchange Calendars sync & display (display merge feature is there)
But ...
- Meeting requests buttons ... Accept/ Reject / ... are not there. (known issue ?)
- New meetings or updates added to main Exchange calendar - using your own main account - are seen by other clients for the very same Exchange account (OWA, WiMo, ...) as they were sent by someone else.
- Meeting "Busy/Temporary/Out of office" status cannot be set from Tab UI.
- Meeting "Busy/Temporary/Out of office" status are not displayed.
- Contacts only from the main Exchange account are accessible. Contacts from other Exchange accounts are synced, but cannot be seen.
HTC Desire HD (and Z) Exchange integration is better than the one provided with Galaxy Tab... Let's hope we'll get an update with next firmware.
Appart from all that, Galaxy Tab is a delight to work with ...
cant view folders on the tab
in addition to the inbox, i cant see the sub folders i created in my outlook and the mails routed to these folders dont show up on the tab..The Ipad & Iphone pushes mails even in the subfolders...need some help !!
When I click on the word Inbox next to the exchange server name, I get a drop down list of all the other subfolders to sync them as well, but by default it doesn't load them.

I miss the swipe friendly folder tabs on the Galaxy S, but the dropdown box ain't bad.
I actually think in many ways the Galaxy series has better Exchange support than Windows Phone 7. Really.

Why?
Just got my tab for a few days and just found out that the Galaxy Tab's email client has no way to accept invitations.
This is a very basic exchange functionality working on most other Android Phones.
I do like the GUI though, but this is unforgivable as it is a basic Android 2.2 feature. As is tagging appointments as for example "private", which is also not possible with the Galaxy Tab's Agenda application.
Hi
What you could try to do is to look at what date the invitation concerns and then open up your calender and go to that date and you should be able to accept/decline the invitation.
/Marcus

With exchange access on my (personal) mobile, my company also has the possibility to wipe out my mobile (company policy). Is there a way I could limit this wipe to only affect all the exchange data? I don't mind that in the worst case when they do a wipe, all my exchange data is unavailable (makes sense), but I don't want to lose all my personal apps/data/pictures/etc. as well... (Is this possibly different per exchange client?)
Touchdown handles more complex Exchange integration including client certificates, "device" encryption, PIN code access etc. The good thing about it is that it creates its own encryption and pin locking zone so that it doesn't affect your whole device. On data wipe etc, it only affects the exchange area.

[Q] SMS Sync Android Gingerbread

Hi,
in the new Rom (Android 2.3.3) for Samsung Galaxy S I9000 is it possible to use the SMS Sync Function for Microsoft Exchange 2010.
In the HD2 Rom´s I can´t found this Function.
Is this Function integrated by Samsung or is it just not build in?
Thanks.
Are you sure about this ? I can only see Contacts, Calendar and Tasks as sync options on the Account settings even though I was asked about SMS sync in the account setup.
If anything, I think it will be an Android function not specific to Samsung phones =)
I´m absolutely sure.
This feature isn´t available in any HTC mobile phone.
Galaxy S2 / S, this feature is available.
HTC HD2 and HTC Sensation is this Feature not available.
only if your exchange service is configured (by admin) to do text syncing..text syncing is available frm exchange server 2010 on wards
I have an Exchange 2010 server at my disposal. I'm currently using Windows Mobile 6.5 where die feature is working. I'm considering to switch to Android eventually, but I'd like to have that feature. As I refure to spend multiple hundred bucks to buy a new phone (my HD2's hardware is still totally sufficient for most OSs) it would be nice to know if this is an Android or Samsung feature.
I was kind of astonished as I connected a friend's Samsung Android phone to my Exchange and got the possiblity to sync text messages.
An inquiry at Samsung was doomed to fail as the lady in 1st level support didn't even understand my question, let alone was she able to forward it to another support level.
So no progress there.
Does anyone have new information?

Sync with outlook

Ok after running WinMo phones since their inception I have moved to Android
First thing I want to Do with my new S2 is sync with outlook...contacts, notes, tasks etc
What can I use to get all the data accross not just say contacts
Can I use Kies ?
Do a Google for CompanionLink
Thanks but $50 or $130 to sync to outlook seems insane
The latest & greatest and I cant just plug it in & sync
May as well send it back and keep my HD2
Use Samsung Kies. Its free to download from Samsung website.
i came from winmo and found it a real struggle to sync with outlook. you have to get used to everyone ignoring your question and telling you just to sync with google.
try kies - if that doesn't work, look for myphoneexplorer. it's also free, works flawlessly and is the closest thing i can find to activesync ...
I just found this page http://www.syncdroid.net/
Incredible... I have to [email protected]#k around with 40 pieces of software for a solution
The best phone cant even talk to one of the most widely used pieces of software
My very first windows phone at least did contacts flawlessly..I remember purchasing some software to sync notes...BUT that was 8 years ago!!
I've never had any Apple products because I dont like being told which way to do things and now Google seems no better
What a let down
You probably won't like this but there's a solution. For about $10 a month you can use an Exchange hosting service. In addition to all the syncs you're looking for you get true push e-mail and don't have to use any of the Google apps. It's elegant but not free.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Look for Gsyncit I think its called.

Sorry man, thanks to all these corporations wanting to own your sould they do their best to keep you from being able to move cross platform. A real pia and yeah, people here don't seem to get that many organizations do not want any of their stuff going across third party data harvesting outfits (i.e. gmail) and they are not going to change any time soon. IMO you either deal with the crap workarounds or move on because things have been stagnant on this front from the start, there has been little movement up till now, and no sign of any real improvement in sight.
You don't need "crap workarounds" with Samsung Android phones - they Outlook sync either via USB or WiFi using Kies just fine. And this sync completely bypasses Google.
Its not a feature of Android in general, but something Samsung adds to their customized Android builds.

I'm in the same boat...just moved from winmo and thought it would be easy....no it doesn't sync with kies just fine
Try Kies...it's not as intuitive as the almost invisable active sync
I have got my contacts accross although multiple address books look to have not been kept separate
I also havent check that 100% of whats in outlook has come accross as there are multiple fields
Pros coming across from WinMo:
- smooth op system
- havent pulled my battery once yet ..just as well as the cover is made of paper
Negs
- all that battery sucking stuff functions better, is easier to turn on and leave on so the juice dissapears just like before

Install Google calender sync on your PC, that will sync Outlook to your Gmail account.
Then set your phones calender to sync to that same Gmail account and all will be handled automatically for you.
For free, may I add.
"Local" sync with active sync doesnt require any "sharing" with microsoft in the cloud which is why people dont want to share with google in the cloud
why should you have to get a Gmail account just cos you have a Android phone?
