I am running win7 32bit, Google SDK installed, xoom root zip extracted to SDK, file moved from platform tools to tools)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010568
i've followed this thread all the way, but always get stuck at the fastboot flash boot boot.img . (file taken from xoom root zip) once it has completed i do the reboot from ADB, and i am stuck at the dual core technology screen. If i flash the US MX604 boot.img it lets me boot but wifi is fubar'd. If I use the canadian files it stays stuck on dual core screen.
Has anyone encountered this at all? its starting to be quite annoying and through all the threads i have gone through nothing points me to the same issue or a good fix for it. I can see people using tiamat 1.4 boot.img but can't seem to get my hands on that file.
I did not post this in the dev because i'm a lurker and have not been posting much.
Merci!

HTC Desire Rooted
Motorola Xoom, getting me angry
so I was able to flash tiamat 1.4.0 boot.img, still cant write files to any folder in /system, and now my wifi is fubar'd
done!
ran these 2 commands in adb shell
# mount -o rw,remount /system
# CHMOD 777 /SYSTEM
and was able to write to /system after, with the boot.img from tiamat 1.4.0 and wifi is working.
I would not change the permissions to 777 on /system
You will need to do "adb remount" and then push the superuser files to /system.
whats should i change it too, befor changing it to 777 it would not let me push to any folders under /system because write was off, and if I only did # mount -o rw,remount /system , it still would not turn on..

I rooted my hero last night and tried out a few different ROMs but eventually decided to revert to stock and make some manual changes. I used nandroid to restore to just after the root (1.56.651.2). I was able to remove some apps using adb, but the adb remount command fails (permission denied), and I'm unable to push a new bootscreen on to the phone. I also tried a Root File Manager and pre-kitchen as alternatives for the bootscreen, and neither one works. The Root Manager won't paste the files from SD into /system/media/ and pre-kitchen just reboots the phone.
Any suggestions?
Any chance this has something to do with downloading only up to SDK Platform 1.5? I'm at a total loss. I RUU'd my phone, did a clean root at startup using adb shell, and I still have the same problem. The adb remount command won't work, and I can't push anything into the system directory. For what it's worth, when I still had Root Manager installed I was able to toggle RO R/W in any directory with no problem, and I could move files around within the ROM... but I couldn't move anything into it from the SD. I'm new at this, so I have no idea what the problem might be. Anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions?
If anyone else runs into this problem, this solution worked for me:
adb shell
# su
# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# chmod 777 /system (Or any subdirectory you want to push to inside system)
# exit
adb push <local file> <device location>
Restore modified permissions when done.
Though I'm still not sure why this is necessary in place of adb remount.
I'm pretty sure the adb remount command will not work on the stock rom. You should be able to do it with just this command instead:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

Thanks... didn't realize stock wouldn't accept adb remount. If I use the above line from within shell, that doesn't help me push anything on to the phone though... so I needed to enable global permission and then do the push. Oddly enough I tried the same approach last night using Root Manager, and the transfer from SD still failed, even after I applied 777 to the dir I was trying to modify. The current solution may be kind of tedious, but at least it works.
you really shouldn't do 777 on your filesystem, ANY app can then write to your system, overwrite things, or install malicious code. Just remount manually and you should be able to push anything you want, just remember that w/ the stock rom you also don't get a full busybox either.
I'm not positive, but I would think after you remount, you should be able to "adb push" to /system. I suppose it might be specific to that shell, but I would think not.
You just may have to do it once each time you boot your phone.
Edit - err nevermind... you're having permission errors.... um... change adbd on the phone to run as root? not sure how off the top of my head...
I am running custom rom Rooted 2.1 v0.3.
Ever since flashing to the custom rom, when i try to push a file, such as:
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media
I get the error:
Failed to copy.... Read-only file system.
I didn't have this error before flashing to the rom. Does this have something to do with superuser whitelist?
I have tired:
mount -oremount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
and it didn't work and I tired:
adb remount
winch returned:
Operation not permitted.
This is ticking me off since I didn't have this problem until flashing the rom.
EDIT: Now if I try:
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media,
I get:
Permission denied.
This is crazy.
I need help also. Rooting for first time and trying to get recovery.img on and keep getting read only errors. Tried remount to no avail. Help please

if anyone know what command to execute an install or push of "any.apk" via Android Terminal Emulator. It would help me greatly.

I had the same problem. From what I could tell, I had the wrong ADB driver somehow. So I downloaded the drivers from the HTC website and went to device manager (Win7) and updated the driver software which fixed the problem. But I think i just lucked out when i stumbled onto that, I feel a blind retard with epilepsy trying to draw a circle on an etch-a-sketch when I'm doing things like rooting. But, it couldn't hurt to try it.

I think the proper permissions were not set for this ROM. Hopefully jcase can modify the file and re-upload the ROM =)
at least that's what I've gathered... someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong
edit: I looked at the script file and it seems like rw permissions are set properly???
jcase - any insight?
I personally get a bunch of "Out of memory" errors when trying to follow the recovery walk-through.

OK... so I am trying to get the Internet up and running for this Samsung Epic. I almost have it down, but there is something that I know is wrong from the other Android phones that I have flashed before.
For Metropcs internet to work we have to install a script: u2nl and autostart file.
Here is my problem: I can put the autostart file into the data/opt folder, but when I try and paste the u2nls file into /system/bin it tells me that it is only a read only....
Now when I try in commond prompt and I try and do adb remount it now tells me No such file or directory or remount failed.
If I can get that u2nl file to stick in there I know I will be good to go.
I dont know much about adb commands, so here is what I did:
I plugged phone in on charge only mode. USB debug is checked.
cd c:\android\tools
adb remount **wont work either...it will fail, which probably why I cant write into the system/bin file.
adb push c:\autostart.sh /data/opt/autostart.sh
adb push c:\android\tools\u2nl /system/bin/u2nl **wont work
Adb shell
su
chmod 0755 /system/bin/u2nl **gives me an error
chmod 0755 /data/opt/autostart.sh
Please help!!!!!
Thanks.
I have one bad and one good news for you
First the good one...
Reboot into clockwork recovery and mount /system...retry
Bad news...
That method or the anycut method does not work...I already spent 2 days trying so many settings and it just doesn't work.
Do u have mms working?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
My MMS does not work since my Internet does not work.
There are people that have gotten this to work on Metro already with everything at my local metro shop in CA.
I am pretty sure once I get this u2nl file to stick, it will work. The 3G arrows starts up and then it seems like it will start to run the autostart script and then errors out.
Let me try what you said and I am also going to try another rom.
under clockwork recovery which mount do I do? mount /sd-ext
What is suppose to be mounted and unmounted?
it says: unmount /system **meaning its already mounted right?
if its says unmount /system..its already mounted
just go to cmd and
adb remount
adb push c:\android\tools\u2nl /system/bin/u2nl
ect..ect..
if the remount doesnt work..download busybox installer and update busybox to the latest version and retry
autostart\u2nl its not required to be able download\send mms..you need to have the right apn settings and the 3g arrows dancing lol,,
ok so when I hit adb remount it says "remount failed: No such file or directory
I downloaded the busybox, when I open it it says:
Busybox 1.17.1 is what I have in phone
Busybox 1.18.0 git (unofficial) I can download
Below that it says where do I want to install busybox:
/system/xbin/ or /sbin/
Where do I install and should I install that unofficial version?

should be /system/bin (no x or s before bin)
1.17.1 is fine
try again if that doesnt work..in clockwork recovery try this
adb shell
su
remount rw
exit
exit
and try again..im running out of options here..lol
hey did it work? how is it going with full flash?
also make sure you root with the new zip version..some previous versions dont have the remount scripts
adb commands
u2nl does not need to be run in /system/bin. just edit the autostart.sh to reflect your location change. if u insist on running from /system/bin, then do this
adb shell
su
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
exit
exit
then push u2nl to /system/bin
Thanks buddy it looks like it worked....
Now I have the data arrows showing but something is not kicking in yet. I think I am missing something. I changed all the right settings on Qpst have the right passwords now (msl - whiterabbit.org) all files in the right place.
I have done this on Eris full flash, evo full flash, incredible full flash, but this Epic is driving me nuts...
kinda stuck right now.
Lol and now we are 2 stuck in the same place. I had flash tons of droids, evos, but this epic is making me going nuts..I don't know what's going on either..I had seen epics on cricket full flashed with no problem..but seems samsungs don't like metropcs' proxy

What rom r u using bro? Maybe the epic rom I'm using desnt support iptables for some reason..
I'm going to try another rom tomorrow.. either way keep me updated as well.

stock (rooted of coutse) with the iptables file in the bin folder . that used to work in my old droid, just set the correct permissions, andromeda v1.1.x, mixupkernel DI18-voodoo, and epic experience (dont remember which version) and none worked
I have some ultrasecret info..lol..supposedly the normal autostart.sh file does not work with samsungs, there is different modified version for the moment and the fascinate but i cant find it
i cant test this anymore cus i dont have metro but thanks to chimstar in the mo-fi forum, dial ##3282# go to edit mmsc url, type your msl, and edit the mmsc server to the metropcs one
if that doesnt work, download the apn back and restore app, delete all apns and restore metropcs working, if you dont have one, edit the xlm file to match all the correct info
make sure you reboot
see if that gets your mms working..i didnt need to have the autostart method running for my droid to get mms
Hi everyone,
A few days ago I got the OTA 2.2.1 on my MT3G and then rooted it using the SuperOneClick tool. I was able to remove all useless apps, pushed others to /system/app with Root Explorer, etc., there is only one to do, and I am clueless: how to replace the stock Android System Recovery <3e> with a custom recovery image, so I can do Nandroid backups, flash .zip files, etc?
I used the ROM Manager app to flash Clockwork, got an "Installation successful" confirmation, but then on reboot into recovery mode my phone got stuck on the MT3G logo. I had to remove the battery, then in second attempt the phone booted into the <3e> image. Restarted again, opened the ROM Manager, according to it Clockwork was installed. Total craziness! Then I tried to flash it using Better Terminal Emulator (su, flash_image recovery /sdcard/Clockwork.img) but I got a "flash_image: not found" message, though I had the image on my sd card.
Any good ideas, folks?
All useful suggestions much appreciated, thanks!
They've been excluding flash_image from htc roms lately. What your gonna have to do is put flash image on your sdcard with the recovery.img. Then mount your sdcard and run the flash_image from your sdcard and flash the recovery image. After your done then you remove the installrecovery.sh from system/etc. That is what keeps installing the factory recovery when you reboot. I get home and onto a decent internet connection in a few hours and I'll upload some adb commands to help you do this.
make sure you have the recovery.img and flash_image on your sdcard
run these commands in adb
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/mtdblock3 /system
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
cd sdcard
mount -o remount,exec /dev/block//vold/179:1 /sdcard
./flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
exit
exit
It's kinda relative to the topic. I'm stuck on clockworkmod and would like to get back to stock recovery as the new HBOOT doesn't let me flash roms. Is there any way I can do so?
Look in my guide... all the files, steps and binaries are included...
Check out my signature!
Thanks, Asadullah. One more question: Are there different versions of flash_image for different android versions, because I saw in another forum a user complaining he/she didn't use the right binary.
Edit: I've extracted a flash_image binary from CM 6, hope it will work
Edit2: It worked, thanks a lot, man!
I think that flash_image from different devices is different someone correct me if I'm wrong. Glad it worked

I forgot to ask you one more question, don't want to open a new thread for this one, perhaps you can help again
I put the code you gave me through the terminal, since adb denied me of su permission. I installed the SDK, and after typing "adb devices" in cmd it saw the phone. "Adb shell" worked (saw the dollar sign), but then intead of getting the pound sign, su gave me "permission denied". But I get the permission when using the terminal. I also cannot see the phone directories when I open DroidExplorer, but otherwise it sees the phone and I get su permission when I use its command prompt. I thought there may be a problem with the root, but if there was, then how was I able to delete and push system apps and install the custom recovery? What do you think may cause the problem? Thanks.

I know it's been a while and you didn't get a reply, and while I found this thread because I too am having enormous trouble rooting this whatever it is cheap chinese android 2.2.1 momo 2 thing covered completely in chinese language apps that I simply cannot use even for the low price it cost me - I thought I'd offer an answer, most likely wrong, but one that may help the next person who may fall into your position.
adb root is an option to start the adb service in root mode, and I can only assume that means for the device.
As I have not been able to get this thing sorted, not knowing what it is really - no phone, no camera, no buttons on the case apart from power/sleep - Home/Esc which do nothing on booting apart from alert the PC to detect a new USB device, no market access, but otherwise exactly what I required - I dont know if it'll help.
But I hate threads left in a question, because I always find them. And this circle of frustration seriously should not be real, it just cannot be this damn hard to do something...
yikes!
help please

sir is this CM.12 cyanogenmod fakelollipop is an example of flash_image even its in a zip file? because i cant get it at all, im stuck at flash_image not found
Hope this is the right place to post this.
My Atrix is rooted stock 1.83 .
I'm trying to "adb push" some OGG files to "/system/media/audio/" to add-to and replace some of the existing system sounds, especially that bloody annoying keypress (typewriter) sound, but I'm getting the following error (which makes sense):
Read-only file system
Tried using Root Explorer, same issue...again makes sense since its mounted as Read only on boot.
I tried booting into recovery mode, but I can't access the phone via ADB at all, even with USB Debug enabled. I also tried "adb remount" command, no luck either. I get an error "operation not permitted".
So, does anyone know the correct sequence of commands I need in ADB to remount the Atrix /system folder as RW??
What I have been doing is using adb push to the /sdcard then using adb shell then su then
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/stl5 /system
Then cp /sdcard/whatever /system/media
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
EDIT: im at my computer now so I can write this easier to understand, lol
Lets say the file you want to change is called whatever.ogg
Code:
adb push whatever.ogg /sdcard/whatever.ogg
adb shell
su
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/stl5 /system
cp /sdcard/whatever.ogg /system/media/audio/notifications
when you access root explorer, does it let you know that it has been granted supervisor privilages? Does it give you the option to change from read to write? what did you use to root? I had to run the original Aroot three times before if finally gave me root.
You're the best, worked perfectly Can't believe that hideous typewriter sound is gone, it only took me 1.5 years as an Android user to finaly say enough is enough. Whomever thought it was a good idea to mimic the sound of an 1800's typewriter on a 21st century device needs to be fired.
Thanks again.
