Vi. Just got my dhd today, happy with it so far!
Downloaded Android system manager and checked the RAM usage, it says total RAM 623 mb! Is the phone using some hidden RAM which isn't shown here. Or does my phone have little RAM?

this is what enticed me to this phone, 768 MB OF RAM BABY!!!
it tales into account system resources, and with all of that, and androids running (around 100 -150) MB of Ram
I should think, if it runs anything like WM 6.x, it saves a portion of the RAM for the video memory.
I think some RAM is used for baseband processing. My Hero has 288MB but somewhat less than that is available for applications.
Some of the RAM is being used by the Android OS... its normal.

imo the missing section of ram, is probably reserved for the gpu in a similar fashion as shared video memory in cheap laptops

Welcome to android freedom. Once you root you have complete control. 5 years from now, the desire hd will still be chugging along. Just like the g1 is still going now. Enjoy and welcome again.
Ps. I'm still using my g1 all the time and it's froyo'd up to the eyeballs.

Hi,
But why do you want more free RAM? What's the point to having more free RAM?
With Android it is useless... You are happy with 500 Mb free RAM? Well, and about the multitasking?
You think your SIII will be faster, smoother or anything else with more free RAM? This is just the opposite
These kind of threads are....
More free RAM helps me with all my multitasking, I personally use my S3 like a computer, so I would need lots of free RAM
PS. I have over 150 apps from the market installed, before this tweak I only had like 100mb of RAM free now I got like 380mb

Google "how RAM management works in android"
If u do alot multitasking u should not have much free ram becuz all the apps running in backround. If u close backround apps to free some ram that means u just kill the ongoing multitasking ur phone is doing and next time u go back to ur previous app it has to be started again so it actually slowsdown ur phone when ur system actually needs more ram it kills the apps by it self... so no need for that much free ram :/

But before, I used a Turbo downloader and every time I left the app and came back the download had failed, nw none of the apps are doing this any more...
This is just my way of being more efficient... If it doesn't work 4 u then that's fine, but it is awesome 4 me

And there are a bunch of others like these...
This is the placebo effect, you see more free RAM (oooh a high number !!!) and you think it is better so you feel it's better.
Sometimes higher is not better...
Free RAM on android systems is wasted ram.

Ok, and...?
Android doesn't work like your computer (with Windows I presume) it's the opposite
You "would need lots of free RAM", it's for you not that the system needs
You have 150 apps with 100 mb of free RAM and now 380 mb of free RAM with you "tip", other than number of free RAM you see in System Tuner, What has changed???
Just the apps you use regularly/often are killed and when you open them they put so much time after like a reboot because they are not kept in memory...

When browsing the web and playing games on the S3 you'll often find a crash. This is because the device has low memory. Deleting apps that use this resource will help by not wasting the memory ie the RAM.
I think its fair to say that the S3 demonstrates that low ram is a reality. I wish people would stop trying to defend the phone by saying low RAM is wasted. Get over it. It is real. The S3 cannot multitask like the S2 because the ROM is packed full of ****e running which is using up the RAM.
Thanks to the OP for posting this.
and aside from what many people have said on how memory works in android,
take a look at settings > application manager > running > then click the bottom "show cached processes"
for those who like to use 3rd party memory managers they will included these cached processes in killing.
they may kill unnecessary processes but along with it those apps that you always use.
now after killing those cached processes, you will see the system caching a new list of apps and many of them are not the ones you use.
thus memory managers/task killers are just spending cpu cycles in turn battery power killing tasks/apps that you always use and when the system detects the free memory it will load apps into cache and usually those apps aren't the one you use.
thus kills the purpose of those task killers/memory managers of freeing memory since the system will just load apps into memory and cache them.
Does the nexus have exactly 1 gb of Ram or is some used for the system? And it is enough for you?

Nexus 7 has ~975MB of ram available. This only has 640K of usable ram
On vanilla android it is plenty, on crapwiz or sense it isn't.
simple as that really.
The N7 is such an improvement over my S3 multitasking wise.

Two types of memory in the Nexus 7.
1GB that the CPU uses to actually run the applications.
8GB or more used for storage.
As per the 1GB? There are many tabs out there that are only 512MB.
Depends on the foot print for the future "Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory" OS. That could take almost 1TB
And how u controll this 1gb.?
It works. U don't care. It runs well... So 1 g is well enough. no?
The 1gb is fine. Wish it could have at least been 1.5gb to future proof it better but hey $200 for my 8gb, no complaints here.

I still remember using a PC with Pentium 2 in it, running windows 95, and 32 Megs of RAM is plenty. And 128 mb is like having a supercomputer.
The whole computer itself cost more than 400$.
I heard that it has something to do with RAM. Sometimes when you come back to the web browser after awhile, the page has to be reloaded. Is this due to the lack of RAM? How do I prevent tell Android to reserve a certain amount of RAM for the browser?
Or stop burning up all your ram with - running apps in the background, live wallpapers, slideshows, widgets, weather lock screen, email sync every 30 seconds and whatever other rubbish is clogging up the system... whenever I check my running apps screen I always have 575MB free ram... way more than needed

LOL, i remember windows 3.1 too, we need to type "windows" in ms-dos in order to get into windows , but i was too young to understand what really is windows that time, i thought it was an application.
Sorry for out of topic tho
Is anyone else experiencing high ram usage on their s4? I'm down to only about 450 mb of free memory. I barely have anything running, too.

"Free ram is wasted ram" this is android not windows...you dont need to worry about low ram, amdroid handles ram difderntly than computers...and more efficiently. If the ram ever becomes too loaded to function smoothly android os will automatically clear the least ysed applications freeing up some ram.

Under settings, application manager...one of the tabs allows you to clear apps from ram
However there is no benefits on doing this...in fact only disadvantages. Clearing apps will jot improve overall device speed, it will however require those apps that were cleared to take longer to reopen as they are no longer stored in the ram.
If a specific app is slow or not running as it usually does than it may be wise to force stop it under settings application manager

Hello,
I just got my T-Mobile G2 a couple of days ago. I don't have a lot of experience yet but I'm curious if this is the normal RAM usage vs availability. If so do you have any problems running high end games, apps, etc? I am presently on 4.4.2. I have used Titanium Backup to freeze a lot of system apps. This just seems like it could be an issue. I also use Greenify to hibernate some apps as well. Any thoughts on this?

I would love to get an expert answer on this. I recently changed it PAC Man Rom and now it appears I have even less available memory. I'm not noticing any lag or anything but it just bugs me. I added up everything cached and running and it totalled like 364mb not even half a gig of ram. This phone has 2GB of ram. So I dunno just seems weird to me. I guess as long as it's not all laggy then that's what matters.

Yeah, the more RAM used the better. I'm using PA3.99RC2 with a kernel (I forget where I got it; just says d800 custom 5 cm) that doesn't use enough RAM. I always have 700-800MB free. I don't know what sysctl changes I can make to increase RAM use. I hope my phone isn't using a swap on its slow mobile phone NAND .
You can use Greenify which now doesn't require root. You can disable apps/system apps running on background that you don't use.
