when you make a new thread, please put an appropriate name. "Wow wtf" is a worthless thread name and makes it very hard for users to search appropriately on the forum. A good name would be "No root after updating to 1.8.3" or "Failed update to 1.8.3"
Flash the 1.8.3 SBF and then user gingerbreak (which needs an external sd card, and it WILL format your internal one, so make backups)
There are tons of threads about sbf flashing and gingerbreak use so no need to continue this one.
I had the same problems that you are experiencing. I went and downloaded a stock 1.8.3 sbf and flashed my device using RSD lite. (search forums for RSD and you'll find the download link) Once you get your phone up and running CORRECTLY on 1.8.3, search for and download Gingerbreak and FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS and it will work beautifully. As far as the SD card goes, I'm not sure why you need one but since it says you do, believe it. I used Gingerbreak WITH a SD card installed and it worked flawlessly. Good luck to you. Don't give up, the Atrix is a wonderful device!! Also, a helpful word of advice... use the search tool for all of the above referenced downloads. They are all over this forum usually in multiple threads so you will find them.

If you tried to update from .52 to .83 that's your problem.
The update is 4.1.57 to 4.1.83.
Flash back to stock 1.26, use gladroot, update to 1.57, don't do anything, update to 1.83, run afterupdate.bat. You will then be rooted on 1.83. It takes a little more time than gingerbreak but I find it works a lot easier than backing everything up and formatting your sd card with gingerbreak.

Don't panic. Simply run afterupdate.bat in gladroot while you are on .83 and you'll be fine.

I have tested the rooting of the G1 with the CRC1 update (with my boss`s phone ) He accidently got the update and installed it yesterday on his non-rooted G1 and while we were at work tonight we flashed it back down to the RC29 with NO troubles at all ... only thing left to do was download the spl and the recovery image and type telnetd, download telnet connect to local host, and run some script... which all should work just fine since it did let us downgrade. I havent seen anyone here or on google that has tried that yet so I wanted to let everyone know it will let you downgrade to the lower version.
Now if you have a rooted phone and install the update .. you will more than likely loose the root .... but you should be able to get root back by re-rooting the phone and going with a non CRC version until a modified image comes out.
OK we finished the rooting today and it flashed with the new ROM and everything. It now is on the JF1.51MOD with the updated radio.

NEITHER of these 2 threads say anything about anyone testing or confirming that you can downgrade FROM CRC1 and get root again.... the JF thread is saying pretty much dont install it and if you do it wont update anyhow. The other thread was cyogen making an altered CRC1 version that has been patched for updating.
Still no threads like this one that I found

Which JF will come out with, as posted in my previous post, but good to know that its still downgradable (is that even a word?) to RC29. This thread should be posted in the general Dream section BTW, as its not pertaining to any development topics.

ya which will be nice when he does come out with it so people can run the phone with that version .. but this inst about who is going to be comming out with a modified image to KEEP root access ...This is to rest peoples fears about NOT being able to re-root the phone if they accept the CRC1 update or not able to root it in the first place... which no one has seemed to have tried/confirmed until now. and .. downgradeable a word?..well ... it is now!

So yeah I'm just upping my post count now since I'm bored. lol. Mmm, family guy is funny.
Strange...as far as I know, I have been able to downgrade to RC29 from all official releases, RC30, RC33 and 1.5, since I have had 4 separate G1's since initial release (I'm extremely clumsy and rough with my phones sometime - usually halfway through a bottle of scotch).
Hmm.
Nevermind - apparently alcohol also affects my ability to read thoroughly.
so,here's what I did, I accepted the cr1 update on my stock 1.5 stock g1,
then, I downgraded to RC29 with no problems at all, I also followed the instructions and rooted my phone ( apparently ), after that, I tried to flash a few different roms, but none would load, my g1 will always freeze at the G1 screen, until I install back the stock rom again,
am I doing something wrong?
'cuz am not that new at this, and I feel stupid.
There was never any question of it.
The only firmware known to be easily rooted is RC29.
Downgrading to RC29 is completely independent of what firmware version is actually ON the device -- it is strictly related to SPL version. Since CRC1 is an OS update and NOT an SPL update, it can't possibly have any affect on whether or not you can downgrade to RC29, hence it definitely CAN still be rooted when CRC1 is installed.
funny...
i was at a friends house last night and he wanted me to root his g1. i was there for hours trying to figure out why i couldnt get the bootloader screen to switch to grey. I downloaded DREAIMG.nbh from several sources with several different sdcards. i even have a dedicated card i named ROOTER with all the neccessary files and updates but couldnt get nothing cooking.

what ROM are you going to?? if its Hero you HAVE to have the latest spl. If it has autoappsstosd you need to have your sdcrd partitioned right (fat32 first and then ext2) I recommend using the sdsplit method.

hmm intersting .. the only time I have seen that is if someone was placing the entire.zip file on the sd card instead of just the DREAMING.nhb file on there. I would just reformat the card to fat32 and place that file only on it again and then try it again and see if anything goes different. Dont know if it makes a difference but i got the DREAMING.nhb off the how to root the g1

Yeah that was my initial reaction but to no avail. Like i said earlier, i tried dl the img. from several sources.
Anyway he's not that into his G1 as much as we here are and like my g/f, despite the many features its capable of, only uses it for calls and text. He's excited about tethering tho but kinda paranoid with all that could go wrong like bricking and all that, so yesterday he was a little reluctant for a second attempt due to the day before's problematic flash. I did happen to get his phone to start ringing again without the call going stragiht to voicemail and the lock screen works now, which was the real reason i was over there in the first place.
But as far as root and CRC1 go, i might sneek my g/f's G1 away so i can test there

lol ya you should take her and try ... I finished rooting my boss`s CRC1 yesterday. after flashing the .nhb file we added the JF1.51MOD thats found on lucids page .. mainly because it has the radio and the rom in one update. But anyhow he has a rooted G1 straight from CRC1 ... wonder what radio you guys had on that phone and if it needed to be updated before going to the ROM you chose
I needed this!
I needed to root a friends phone. He just bought it, and it had RC29. By the time he got to me, it was CRC1. Regardless, I found this post which showed it worked.
I flashed RC29, Then rooted it. Flashed latest radio, CM 1.4 Recovery, then JF1.50, and finally CM 3.9.7.
It worked beautifully! Thanks for the confirmation post!

Hey,
I'm a "noob" and not SUPER technically advanced when it comes to phones, but I have a decent idea how to do things with it.
I got an Incredible used from someone and it was already rooted by him. I was told the other night that you need to have the phone unrooted in order to get the official OTA 2.2 update. That night I attempted to unroot it, but turns out I was doing it wrong. I went to bed, and woke up with the OTA update on my phone asking if I wanted to install it, so I said Install Now, and it went to the Boot screen and I dont know if I did something wrong, or it just wouldnt work because my phone was rooted.
So now, 3 days later I've got it Unrooted finally, and I've tried several different update.zip files that I've downloaded from different forums, etc. None of them will work, and they all say Installation Aborted.
Also, when I am in the recovery screen, it says E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
I've tried several different sd cards thinking that was the problem, and same failure everytime. I have a feeling it is my phone itself..
Any ideas, help, advice??
Greatly appreciated..

Just download the Verizon 2.2 Froyo update RUU. Run it on your computer with your phone connected and you'll get it. You didn't need to unroot either cause it will automatically zap that.

Google VISIONary (r14) place it on your device, install it then run it. Temproot is for temporary rooting your device, its gone after a reboot, permaroot is for good, unless you use the unroot option.
Its safe, fast and easy. I use temproot option so I can use some root only apps. This is the first device I have felt no need to add a custom rom to or anything so VISIONary was the choice for me. If you want the long harder way directions can be provided. I do recommand you learn the long hard way at some point, its good to know your way around just in case.

first of all rooting is not for everyone. I can name a few people in a few forums that do not run a rooted phone for one reason or another. Rooting your phone gives you possibilities that are not even considered when you are in a stock form. But on the other hand you can seriously damage your phone, with the possibility of it ending up a 500.00 paper weight.
The safest and easiest thing to do is download VISIONary.apk and just use temp root. That will give you the ability to do everything you need to do in a root status w/o risking FUBARing anything. You can wi-fi tether, run Titanium Backup and stuff like that.
If you are wanting to go full blown and root it w/ s=off and do the
you can do it the real way and follow Cyanogen's method
Or you can do via the TheUnlockr for a simpler way.
If I temp-root it, would I have to temp-root it every time I want to run the wifi-tether program? Or just on installation?

Strange? Please can anyone tell me if I screwed this and how can I resolve?

3.0.0.5 is the older one. 3.0.2.4 is the newer one.
What error are you getting when you flashed the g/apps?
how the eff is stuff getting deleted from the SDcard. the recovery image doesn't natively delete anything from the SDcard.

Their has to be something wrong with (a) the recovery image or (b) the g/apps.
Are you sure you are downloading the correct g/apps for our phone running CM7. They have their own g/apps....If you are 100% sure it's for our phone then i'd suggest .....
... is attempting to manually flash the recovery image to make sure you do not get a blip in the system. Personally, i do not trust flashing recovery images with Clockwork ROM manager. I've seen a-lot of errors come out of it. This might be one of them.
Have you tryed the 8gig sdcard to install the g-apps? the 32gig may be bad
I just removed the sd card and put it on my laptop and copied a folder with music... after taht turned on the phone and it is gone! strange!
Gonna test the 8gigs..
Put the 8 gigs, and it installed... Hmmm...
NOw, after it finishes the setup of the apps I will format the 32 and test it...

I don't know why people are having soooo much trouble with this so im just going to post this..
this is what I did to get the 1.8.3 update.
1) Go download the Motorola Software Updater from here.
2) Download the updater and then install it. Make sure that you have your Motorola Driver updated.
3) Run the updater, plug in your phone (Debugging has to be on). Wait till the updater recognizes your Atrix.
4) The updater will scan your device and see what firmware you have installed. Once it identifies that you have your Atrix connected and you are updated to 1.5.7 it will start to scan for updates (This can take a while, so let it do its thing).
5) Once it finds an update, it will wait till you click next.
6) After that it will download and install the update to your phone, once it is completed your phone will reboot. (Again, the updating/installing can take a while)
THATS IT!
Rooting time w/ GingerBreak.
Go here to view the full guide on how to do it. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!
If I can do it, anyone can.

It would be nice if you could update like this but they have pulled it off there site since its not goin OTA yet. So now were having to revert back to flashing 1.8.3 over 1.5.7 va RSD. then do the whole root and side load after that

To my understanding it took alot of peoples phones a while. From what i heard you can Flash 1.5.7 then flash 1.8.3 on top of that and root and enable side loading before the phone tools would start the update

There should be a %. But it doesn't say how long and I didn't keep track. I just started it and left. Came back and it said it found an update then i just installed it.

-Rooted (required for Screen Grabber to work)

I Flash a 1.8.3 SBF file.
But can't display a MP4 file which can play on Ver 1.5.7.
Can you play it with Gallery (with 1.8.3 default video player.)??

I understand that it worked for you a couple days ago but things changed and I assure you it does NOT work anymore.
Looks like the OTA availability is widening. I've been manually checking for updates daily for the last week or so. This morning it found the update and installed without issue. Northern VA area.
i just used the 1.8.3 sbf with RSD lite 5.31
No update on moto for me and no OTA
finally got it working, thanks!
I got the update notice as soon as I registered the product (which I hadn't done until today after owning since April 20th). Make sure that you've registered your phone on motorola.com
I just got the update right now over WIFI > System Update. Looks like its downloading now!!!
dont forget to backup your internal sd card since gingerbreak will format it.

Ya, that was my experience too. I did everything to the letter, and no update. What I think happened is moto/att is pushing out the update in batches, and you (chubby) happened to be one of the lucky first in the roll out, and that's why it worked for you.
I could be wrong, but that would definitely explain why everyone but you was having so much trubbs.
BTW, I just checked again a few minutes ago and it finally found the update.
OK so back on the Atrix. Have to say that I missed it.
Anyway in pretty short order I had unlocked the bootloader and was soon on my way to Gingerbread goodness.
Trouble is that I loaded the original CWM instead of the one for a unlocked bootloader.
I have spent the afternoon going through system/etc deleting files , reloaded through motofast boot any number of times and I still ended up with version 4.0.0.2.
Ok thought I go back to the start.
SBF'd back to Froyo and went through everything again and reloaded a freshly downloaded unlocked CWM and....
Still only have version 4.0.02.
Any clues how to get out of this ?!?!?!
Pretty please.

Hmm I never paid attention to the tenfar cwm version numbers... but to know if you're on the cwm for the unlocked bootloader is if you can get into it WITHOUT being plugged in. The old locked version can only be accessed if plugged in.
You are right the older version required you to plug into a charger the new one doesn't.
My trouble is that the version I am using doesn't seem able to see zip files on a phone with a unlocked bootloader.
Hence my trying to figure this out.

Are you using the one from the market? If so, it doesn't see external SD card yet.

if you're trying to read off the internal sd card then that's why. only the newest cwm from tentar can read off the internal sd card

I have the unlocked version of the tenfar cmw, and its the same version as yours. 4.0.0.2
So it looks like you have the correct one.
Did you install it by using the fastboot flash recovery command?
Yes, getting adept with moto-fastboot.
I have spent most of the day working through this and seem to be getting no-where fast.
If you look at the screen shots of the updated CWM it shows as being version 4.3.3, so if you can see the internal SD with 4.0.0.2 wonder why I can't.
Hold on that isn't quite right. I can see the internal SD just not the ROM zips. I can load radios etc just not ROM.

If you are indeed Bootloader Unlock, just download the attached file and run the "ROOT_CWM" bat
I hope it help
Good sir you are the man !
Ran the .bat file and then went into Recovery and low and behold there was the choice of Internal and External SD cards.
Fantastic bit of work, so very much appreciated.
